    I have never seen a tutorial where roof pitch was typed in when using the protractor or rotate. That is a new one, and one methinks I shall be adopting. Most folks have converted pitches to angles, but sure is nice to know we can just type pitches in. Thanks!

      Converting to angles is math, this, something I try to avoid. Let the computer do the math!

      Being able to type in Roof Pitches was a huuuuge reason I adopted Sketch-Up decades ago. That and push-pull....Styles was just a plus.

    Also thanks for explaining entering the roof slope as an number over 12. I figured it was doable but could never figure it out.

    Good stuff as always. I had no idea one could input a slope instead of an angle.

      Im guesing 6:12 is the same as arctan(0.5) which yeilds 26.57 degrees ish?

    Thanks for the video. It's very helpful to see different ways of modeling a form that is a part of virtually every model I make.

    Roof pitch (6:12). Now that is handy. Thank you!

    Thank you, that was a good video. I also had no idea that you could input slopes like that.

    At first I thought this was going to be over complicated but after a while I saw it was a quick way of roofing.

  • @madwani

    Thanks that was a great way for roofing. I would just add, that in real modeling everything is in groups or components so deleting extra geometries after tracing the roofs intersection would be much easier and efficient as we can use "Hide Rest of Model" command.

    Here's an idea for a video. Take the roof formation to the next step and model the overhangs - eaves, fascias, soffits, rakes, frieze board, etc. This is where I spend TOO much time! I'd like to see some ways to model a simple boxed eave return like you would expect to see on a real colonial home.

    Nice video. I never knew about that 6 : 12 trick!
    One question:Why didn't you use intersect with model or intersect with selection to create the intersection lines between the two roofs, instead of manually drawing those lines?

    Select the wall component and the roofs. Intersect selected > isolate roof > delete extra faces only > plugin to clean stray lines > unhide walls.. Boom, quick and easy with custom shortcuts.

    great for modeling the exterior shape, but I seem to be unable to push/pull windows through the gable end (to make a penetration), they just push out the other end. Is that because the faces of this roof lack any thickness? Any quick ways to remedy this?

    This is not working for me. I have each external wall in a group as you showed in a Walls video. I clink on the corner and draw the vertical line, then the horizontal line. Then use Rotate but when I angle up the vertical line bends. Is the grouping the problem?

    The most useful video idea for me would be troubleshooting. I'll get halfway through a model of something and find there is some silly error where 2 out of 4 holes (screw holes in a 3d printable model for example) are no longer selectable and now part of the plane. I've never figured out how to troubleshoot things of that nature and fix them. It's always start all over.

    Hi Rotating lines by slope seems great, but for some reason my desire slope does not rotate to the correct input. For exmaple I will rotate line to a 6:12 slope, but angle look more like a 12:12 slope. Most likely user error. Any chance you can shed light on this Aaron.

    I'd like to see an A-Frame roof w/no overhangs made from palm leaf (grass type - roof material) attached to a (3) poles per leg "Bamboo framing (inner structure".) to attach the roof structure to - beginning (20') above the ((ground floor & running to the peak (40' above "ground") - (which (of which the ground floor) is actually real Earth type ground for planting food plants in)) & I'd like "greenhouse / shade house covering" as covering for the walls from ground to (20') up. And (2) (sized appropriate for location) decks made of bamboo (1) at (20') up (second floor deck.) And (1) at 29 feet =(3rd floor) up from the ground level - which is actually "GROUND." = "the" food garden "floor") - making a total of (2) decks on each end =(4) decks total. & on the triangular window ends separating interior from the decks w/bamboo window frames & all glass separation to the living space (2nd) & (3rd) floors of The Greenhouse\home - which is (to a higher degree than standard) more Earthquake flood and extreme weather resistant. than your average home - more specifically designed to be touted as the best tool "type home" utilized for the practice of practicing permaculture principles - in order to correct what the practice of capitalism's mass practice of generating excessive personal wealth is doing to deplete and over toxify & over consume the natural (predominantly "used-to-be" free-of-charge) provisions systems. But is now just a way to get a way cool (very covetable) - life style of converting all used to be free-of-charge things of the natural world - into Man made (money made THINGS) of excessive convenience - at the expense of the once-up-on a- time "simple life" supporting nature of the Earth it's self - accelerating the fast approaching extinction of a fellow humanity of drone slave workers "obliviously guided by money empowered (over complicated) science" - helping ourselves to rid ourselves from further interfering with the natural balance - which used to be able to sustain life - on a beautiful natural free-of-charge provision systems supplied Earth - until the masses of money making mankind "ran amok" to the (over complicated by money making) end of the nature - of naturally supporting humanity on Earth. "ALL FOR THE MONEY". Is it too late - we better start building these GreenHouse\Homes but fast - with which - to help each other have enough predominantly Free-of-charge food and shelter materials - while nurturing the natural back to health. Or we can finish our little science project to the end result. "Sooner than might need be". Because everything in the natural world has a shelf life "or an extinction day" - (just ask money empowered science) - They Know. (at least approximately)

    What would be the correct way in sketchup to keep the roof and main house separate? I've only used Sketchup for single 3d printable items. Do you make groups, componenets, layers? If for example I model my house and I want to hide just the roof later to see inside. Should I make everything that's part of the roof a component?

    • @SketchUp
      @SketchUp  5 років тому

      The roof geometry should all be placed into a group or component to keep it separate from the wall geometry.

    • @artworksenvisioneering2167
      @artworksenvisioneering2167 5 років тому +2

      Yep. Prexactly. That command also fixes lots of quirks w lapped geometry or missing faces etc. Spot on. However, selecting only faces you wish to intersect and choosing intersect w selection will avoid lots of ghost lining on stuff at times. I use that method more frequently when trimming roof items as it avoids all those lines. And always make the walls and roof separate entities for ease of navigation etc.
