    Wow, Merchandising for greeting cards so simplified then when I worked for Pfizer handling their products. We had to do a few resets, checking in with Dept. Mgrs/Store Mgr, and zeroing out the old product to send back, plus restock if shelves were low. In all many times at the store for over 2 hrs if Dept Mgr wasn't up-to-date in change outs, but definitely appreciated those which kept departments neat and orderly and with back stock too. I've been looking at this possibly as a side gig.

    • @MimisMixedBag
      @MimisMixedBag  5 років тому +2

      Yes PJ it’s a great little side gig. Only reason I left American Greetings a year ago was because my grandchildren moved home.
      The good thing about cards is there’s no expiration date to worry about. About every two years small accounts like Dollar General would be overhauled. Area merchandisers would be calked to team up and tackle it together.
      I worked for a great territory manager. She knew I took care of my accounts and she basically left me alone. I imagine that’s not the case everywhere. I used to tell people it was strictly a little grocery money help and not paying the bills. Keep me posted. 👍🏻

      myke c once you get hired they will assign you to 2-3 stores. Those will be YOUR stores. Every store is completely different. Your calls and hours differ every week . For example. One week I will go to Dollar General 1:36, Dollar Tree 3:12 and Big Lots :46 . Your hours depend on sales and how much product comes in. I'll have seven days to make those three calls any day anytime. The next week I'll log onto the computer and only go to two stores.
      If you ever need a week off, it's your responsibility to find another merchandiser to cover your store while you're gone. We all help each other out.

      myke c Believe it or not we have a high turnover rate. Problem is we stress to people it's only 5 to 15 hours a week depending on the stores. They always end up saying they more hours.
      It's a great little job if you only need a couple hundred dollars a month. There is also opportunities to make a little more when they call in a crew of merchandisers to redo stores etc.

      Hi THD
      You have absolutely no set hours. Since I had a very busy Walmart, the managers always wanted Christmas Valentines etc down and changed by noon the next day.. So I would judge how long i it would take me and get there in enough time to do it
      . Every Walmart and account is different so this was just my experience.
      Just remember regardless of which card company you’re applying for, you work for them, not Walmart.
      However, it is your responsibility to keep a good dependable relationship with management. This will help you when you need permission for display space or help with back room storage. Good luck. Let me know if you get it. I’m always here and I can try to help if you have a question..

    • @MimisMixedBag
      @MimisMixedBag  4 роки тому +7

      Hey Tyler.
      When I used to train new merchandisers I would tell them First few weeks you’re going to struggle to get everything done in the allotted time. However you will get faster. It’ll get to the point, You’ll have time left over but claim every minute they give you because sooner or later you’ll use it.
      If you get hired you will watch videos of best practices.
      The videos will teach you how to be the most efficient with your time. For example you won’t go in and straighten up first and then put out cards. It’s more efficient to put out cards and straighten at the same time.
      The videos will teach you to create a relationship with the store management. It will make a difference when you need permission for floor space for a display. You’ll get extra things for Valentines Mother’s Day stuff like that.
      They usually don’t put a brand new merchandisers in big accounts like Walmart & Target.
      Chances are they’ll give you a few dollar generals to get started.
      I did Walmart for years and many many little accounts too.
      Let me know if you get hired 👍🏻👍🏻

    • @MimisMixedBag
      @MimisMixedBag  2 роки тому

      You log on and you have certain tasks to complete in a limited amount of time. For example, they will give you 55 minutes to take down Valentine and put up Easter. Starting out it’s hard to complete in that amount of time. However, You’ll eventually get it done in 30 minutes and still claim 55. So if you stick with it, It’s totally worth it.
      Some companies make you scan a barcode in and out of the store so you’re at a disadvantage there.
      But I could go any day, anytime as long as it got done within the week. I hope that helps.

      @@kristymarie6065 I only worked for American greetings. Things might have changed for Hallmark but at one time their merchandiser’s had to scan a barcode with their handheld device. It was a time keeping system to show when you entered and left the store.
      Most independent merchandisers of any company have a handheld scanner device. The little device allows you to send info to the company. You had to scan UPC numbers for Discontinued and damaged cards and some holidays.

    • @MimisMixedBag
      @MimisMixedBag  4 роки тому +3

      John Miller
      Hi John
      Here are the answers to your questions but remember Hallmark and American Greetings may be different but this was my experience.
      1) I always got reimbursed for mileage after your first store.
      I planned my route so go to the closest one first When you get on your own.
      2) We were furnished a big tote bag. It held all your necessary supplies from store to store. Rubber bands, Necessary forms, Band-Aids for Papercuts, Your hand held scanner machine,
      Stuff like that. Each store always had a little designated spot under the cabinet or box in the back for other things.
      American greetings had a clipboard to sign in it was all based on the honor system. Hallmark has a barcode you scan to prove you were there. All your work hours are entered online. It’s a special payroll website where you would enter location, time in and out You will get training on how to do that.
      3) Training consisted of a few hours of training videos. You will be compensated For the time watch watching. The job is simple eno and every store is set up And procedures are pretty much the same. Different chain stores require different things. I trained many people. I would go with them on their route at least a couple times and always introduce them to the manager. Part of your training will be to always acknowledge a store clerk when you go in. With a AG, a store employee always had to initial our time keeping clipboard. The clipboard thing was just a formality. To get paid do you had to enter everything online.
      4) In the beginning, the biggest struggle is Getting the job done in the allotted time. This is only because you’re new and slow.
      After a few weeks, You’ll get faster and actually finish before time is up. I would tell new people please hang in there I promise it will be worth it once you know exactly what you’re doing.
      Hope my answers helped.

    This coming holiday season will be my first with AG. I've heard that I won't know if I'm coming or going around Thanksgiving and Christmas. Do you have any helpful advice?

    • @MimisMixedBag
      @MimisMixedBag  3 роки тому +2

      I will tell you that if you service a Walmart store that you will be busier than ever like 20+ hours a week. Friday after Thanksgiving is change over so that day is mandatory. The week before Christmas is 20+ hours too. But if you have just a bunch a little accounts They won’t be much busier than Any other special occasion. At Walmarts you have product in seasonal decor too plus 4 x4 s in the isles of wrap, cards, etc. Your first season will be hard just trying to get everything done. It’s better to fill empty holes and pegs with a few then to leave it empty. If you spend all your time filling up certain areas you will run out of time.
      As for every day stock during December, just do what you have to do and focus on pushing out Christmas stock.
      They always sent me too much.
      And the last biggie is if it is a few days before Christmas and you are overwhelmed with stock, Start throwing some away a little every day.
      But like I said if you service a little accounts it’s no big deal compared to Walmart.

    • @MimisMixedBag
      @MimisMixedBag  3 роки тому +1

      @@chevyhawk406 You can’t give 100% to seasonal and every day at the same time. After Thanksgiving your everyday cards and wrap are not priority.
      Only fill empty holes during December
      Your main job in December is to push out the Christmas stock. Otherwise you’re going to be left with a pallets of stuff. They always sent me too much. Every visit before Christmas put out absolutely everything you can. A few days before Christmas you’ve got to start disposing some of that overstock. Because what you Already have out will go clearance December 26.
      Training my tell you not to dispose of it but I don’t know what they expect you to do with it because Walmart managers want it out of there. You are on Walmart turf, And if they tell you to get it out of there your only choice is to throw it away. I’m just telling you in all my years of experience I had to start throwing a little bit away leading up to Christmas.
      Hope that helps

      Patti, I totally get it. Pay is a big deal if it’s not worth your time. I’m here in Tennessee so I know payscales are different. Unexperienced merchandisers usually started at minimum wage around $7.25 an hour.
      I was inexperienced but had a college degree and started out at 8:50. For seven years, I got a 25-50 cent raises every year.
      This job was perfect for young mothers with school children. However, they found out real quick this p/t job knocked them out of benefits and they could stay home for the same money. Sad but true. I lost count how many people I trained. Granted the pay is not great. The beauty of this little job is you pick your own days and hours and didn’t have to answer to anyone. It was worth it to me to have the flexibility and independence.
      Your weekly hours are always up and down just depends on your stores and holiday changeovers .
