  • ► Hello everyone and welcome back to Mystery Scoop. Have you ever heard of a death mask? Well death masks are a replica production of the appearance of a person's face, just moments after they died, and they have been invaluable to posterity as a final viewing of famous people from history. Death masks are typically metal, wax or plaster moulds of a person's face after their death. Being originally in existence since the time of Tutankhamun, the form that we know today, dates back to the Middle Ages. In the age before photography, they were useful in being used as a model for sculptors in creating statues of the deceased person. The King Henry Seventh's death mask, being one of the most famous of such, has helped us visualize his true appearance better, especially with the input of today's technology and the skills of a few individuals in facial reconstruction. Many posthumous statues of Henry VII were supposedly made using his death mask. Let's see some more famous or infamous death masks from our history.

      Deathmasks actually go all the way back to ancient Rome, when it was common to have wax masks hanging in the homes of the wealthy as a means of honoring ancestors. In fact, a death mask exists of Julius Ceasar taken as his body was prepared for his public cremation.

    I guess the death mask needs to be done immediately after the person's death, as someone's features really tend to change very soon after their passing. They just seem to relax and "fall", and then the person suddenly looks like the corpse version of themselves, rather than what they were during their lives. Very interesting content, as always! This video really shows how talented those portrait painters were.

    • @DianeGraft
      @DianeGraft 3 роки тому +28

      Yes, and the death mask may also be showing the ravages of disease as well, so between that and the loss of muscle tone, the mask may not bear much resemblance to the living person. I find a "life mask" more interesting, because that captures a better image of the character and likeness of the person. I think the mask of Lincoln in this video is a life mask, because he had masks made twice during his lifetime.

      @@DianeGraft - You're right, it would always be best to get a "life mask" done and record what the person was like when they were alive and well, rather than dead! Especially if they were ill, as you say, or even just very worn down by old age in the last part of their lives.

    I'm very impressed at how accurate many of the portrait likenesses were to to the final death masks. The artists who painted them captured their individual and unique personal features very well in most of the paintings. As a watercolorist, I can appreciate the desire of the artist to feel a responsibility for making an accurate , but also an acceptable work. It must have been a strange and very odd position to be put into for them personally at times. If your depiction was not well taken or to the King's favor, at the very least your reputation and possible entire livelihood was at stake. The death masks are totally fascinating to me, it is as close as one can get to seeing that person's true face as when they lived. I truly believe that many things about the personality and nature of how a person was in life does reflect in many ways upon the face.It seems to bear much in this theory looking at the death masks regarding some general sense of the overall attitude and character of many of these. And their humanity shine more than anything through being able to see them as one human to another and somewhat see traits such as kindness, high intellect, humor etc in their features... that I perceive anyway.

    • @kimberlypatton9634
      @kimberlypatton9634 Рік тому +3

      I agree with you totally.I think the visage reflects many inner layers of the person character and personality.I notice that a few if the death masks had some slight distortions,especially with the nose of the person ,that's to be expected due to the techniques and methods they had to use.And due to the probable short time they had to make them before other concerns took precedence.Truly remarkable that the idea exists at all and that we have these fantastic true depictions!

    John Dillinger 2:00 is an interesting one, as Public Enemy Number 1 and Americas most wanted criminal on the run, he had tried to change his appearance by plastic surgery to the extent that his positive identification was in doubt when eventually he was betrayed and gunned down by the F.B.I in July 1934. The difference between the photo and the death mask is quite apparent, although the surgery was somewhat botched and primitive, it didn't help much and he thought he'd enhance it by growing a moustache (which didn't do much either)

    When Napoleon passed away in 1821, english buried him in St-helena. In 1840 a french expedition was in charge to bring back the emperor’s body to France, the two death masks of the emperor were made at this time (there are more than two masks, but only two are potentialy true).
    The problem is that scientist and historian can’t prove that one of these is real, the second problem is that these masks have a different shape so no one can know the true face of Napoleon.
    That anecdote is funny, funnier when you know that the ship which carried the expedition carried a camera in its slipway also.

    I hate to tell you, but many of those masks are in fact "life casts" that were made during the person's lifetime. For example: Lincoln's mask was done for a portrait when he was a lawyer (notice there is no beard). The way to tell the difference is the skin often pulls back when the decedent is laid on their back (as in the case of Dillinger's) whereas the "life casts" were made using a material called "moulage" that was developed by "Marie" Tussaud, commonly known as Madame Tussaud in the 1790's.

    Hmmm... yes, it was interesting to see the death masks. That said, I'd expected to see the regenerated & animated image of the person. Also, I love the history synopsis at the bottom. I'd love it more if the blurb was more uniform ie providing DOB (date of birth) & DOD (date of death), age & location at the time of death and the cause of death. Obviously you don't have a ton of space, but how we see history can go a very long way in not repeating our mistakes. Great video, it was thoroughly injoyed by everyone!!! Thanks!

      Yes, it was a LIFE mask. The degree of emaciation and aging that show compared to an earlier life mask of him in 1860 make many suspect that he was suffering some illness (yes, all presidents tend to age noticeably in office, but not to this extent).

    Not mentioned about Aaron Burr was that he had killed another Founder, Alexander Hamilton, in a duel in NJ and that he was once accused of plotting an overthrow of Jefferson's 2nd term. Also, I find it interesting that some of the casts included molds of the wrap used to keep the mouth of the deceased closed. A common practice that was still used into the 20th century before embalming became commonplace.
