For this reason I think the breakdown of levels via stripes within white belt is more useful than at any other belt level.
yeah thats what i thought he was going to say..as he said theres 36 tests in the gracie jui-jitsu system so i wouldve thought hed say the stripes were for that like 2 stripes maybe means youve beat 15 of the tests as one stripe would maybe mean youve beat 7 of them so you can kind fo see where each student is in the class...4 stripes id guess emans you get promoted to the next beltlike master the 36 then do soem sort of test then get the next belt

I am a Blue Belt with 2 or 3 Stripes but had to quit because of health reasons. I wasn't the best student but I really wanted to make it to Purple Belt. My instructor wanted me to stay at White Belt a bit longer but relented and gave me the Blue Belt. I should have listened to him. He was a great instructor. He always used to say two things that I'll always remender. He would yell at the class, "Rest Tomorrow" and "Breathe". I got a lot out of BJJ and I respect Fabio Santos.
I had my white belt up to the 4th degree for two years. Before life got in the way and I could get tested for blue, I moved, which took about a year and a half to get back to training. I joined an old school Jiu-Jitsu academy and the instructor told me “you have nothing.” I was allowed to train with my other school’s belt stripes for about a year until I received my new belt with two stripes sewn in. It took me about another year, watching lots of people get promoted, to get my blue. Because of my many life responsibilities, which only allows me to take class two maybe three days a week, I know it’s going to take some time until my next belt promotion. I’ve been learning to run my own race. Thank you Professor Ryan for all that you do! 👍🙏

[TL;DR You only need to read the first two paragraphs the rest is a tangent.] This has been the case for most martial arts for centres. It's basically just understood that you can't really know what someone's belt means without training at their dojo ... you can only get a rough general idea if all you have to work with is belt color and discipline. This is actually a good thing to me because it doesn't foster a false sense knowing a lot about what a given martial artist is capable of. Besides, how much information did you expect a belt to convey about the wearer... [The rest of this doe not address the comment directly thus can be ignored.] I mean there could be a merit badge system, some disciples do have gi colors and patches that signify certain things but it's mostly competition stuff. I studied shoda-ryu for a couple few years and in our class a white gi was a student, a blue gi was an assistant instructor and the black gi was for sensei... our sifu only visited twice in my time there and he wore some kimona looking garment, I don't know about it really as I didn't ask. But to really know a persons skill relative to your own, you'd have to train with them or challenge them to a bout. You can just walk into most dojos and challenge the instructors, and they'll usually accept, you sign a waiver and maybe pay a small fee and wait till the end of the class for your chance to fight. I've never seen it in person except when I do it, but UA-cam is full of videos of idiots doing it... they're actually pretty funny. When I do it, I make it clear that I have nothing to prove and everything to learn, I'm just looking to see if I like the instructor and that I am considering joining, I also usually bring a small gift to show my graduated for the opportunity... also I like starting out thoroughly humbled. I've found that at most dojos Saturdays tend to be the best day to should up if your going to try challenging. Odd tip I can't really explain.
Lol I was one of the folks that watched your 1st belt explanation. It was very informative regardless of the quality of the video. Goes to show you that sometimes less is more. This updated video is great as well. Thanks for all your videos.
I’ve given up worrying about stripes and belts, I just do it for the self defence and fitness now. I can’t retain enough information to be good at it, so I just go 3 days a week and be consistent. Don’t have a stripe, can usually tap higher belts but I am finished worrying about being competitive. Just have fun people.
I rolled with a purple belt last week and it’s the most frustrating and humbling thing.. this guy is just kind of moving around me and I have no idea what they’re doing but before I know it my arms trapped and pushed up against my neck with his legs around my head choking me.. I roll other white belts and think I’m doing ok, then a purple belt literally demolishes me and I’m just confused the entire time😂
@@therapidbro2122 Yea you aren't getting it. He's saying although he's a blue, purple is a serious step up and him being a blue gets mopped by a purple.
#kataarobelts A great way I heard the belt progression explained is: White belt - learning letters Blue belt - learning words Purple belt - learning sentences Brown belt - learning paragraphs Black belt- learning poetry
Thank you for this video. Very articulate, succinct, professional and a clear testimony of how humble the instructors are at Kama. They have produced so many profound videos - not just technique based, but sometimes deeply philosophical regarding the mindset a person needs in BJJ, to embrace the journey and accept growth and learning as tools to guide your life and lifestyle as a BJJ practitioner. Speaking from an Iternational, sub Saharan African perspective. What a way to get reach ("...teaching bjj to the world...")

#kataarobelts Professor Ryan, I'm a 41 year old white belt just started BJJ with my kids a month ago. I came across your videos looking for gym etiquette. The knowledge and history you have shared is amazing. I had no idea the rich history behind BJJ/GJJ and the figures that got the sport to where it is. The main attribute I see is humbleness in the sport and sharing knowledge. My kids are 11 & 7. I look forward to all the benefits they will learn in the gym. Thanks for the great content. I started at 48. I did it for 4 years. I had to quit due to health problems. I hope you get what you want. If not for my health I would still be working out. You can do it.
Hey man, doesn’t matter when you start. This what I Like to call “life style” is amazing. if you really put in the work into it and reach blue/purple/brown, it becomes a way of your life and honestly made my life amazing. Started when I was about 8 years old, sadly quit right before my 16th birthday. Regretted every second of it because I had the talent for it and was told “good chance You will be a black belt by 18-20” and have regretted quitting ever since.
I just started in BJJ and am enjoying the classes (even at the age of 48). I came to this channel because no one actually showed me how to tie the belt. I’ve learned so much more‼️ #kamaarobelts
Great Breakdown! I realized how efficient BJJ is I wish I started sooner! Hey better now then never How Jiu Jitsu has evolved is out of sight God Bless Helio Gracie and the Gracie Family!
Still the same at a Gracie BJJ school, it takes forever to climb the ranks. Only diff is you have a half step where you can earn a white belt with a blue stripe after completing the Gracie combatives program. You're still essentially a white belt until you test for and earn your blue belt after training for a total of two years or so.
Really interesting information - just got my brown recently from a Royce black belt - my journey was slightly different with 1 year at white, almost 5 years at blue, about 2 1/2 at purple…turning 58 in March - tough road, but so worth it.
Maybe I’ll buy myself a spare from Kataaro when I earn my blue belt. For now I like my dingy, beat up, white belt. Thank you for another interesting video. Please keep making more!
"When you get.upset that you cant train, that's the time for purple belt" I'm a one stripe white belt atm and I'm upset when I cant train, looks like purple belt for me next!
I just turned 49 and I hope to stay healthy enough to train for another 20 years. Thank you Professor Young for the very helpful content. I’ve read great reviews about the #kataarobelts I’m looking forward to getting one for my next rank!
My first stripe at white belt came after 2 months. That day I came in and started rolling hard. I didn’t give up and actually tried to use the moves I learned. My professor watched me tap a few other white belts and a couple blues. I got my first stripe. Turns out just showing up wasn’t enough on its own. I had to actually show I was learning and applying before moving up.
Great video. Interesting note on the stripes, or lack of, for several of the belts. I know many GJJ/BJJ schools, including ours, that award strips for all belt levels.
I was a white belt for almost 2 years. I simply wasn't dedicated enough and was only training twice a week but once I stepped it up a little and started training 3-4 times a week I noticed I was getting better and in my opinion my consistancy is what helped me receive my blue belt. Don't worry about belts just enjoy the journey ! #kataarobelts
#kataarobelts started a week ago, with 39 years old despite being following Jiu Jitsu for a long time. I felt now to be ready for the life commitment. Thanks Kama Jiu Jitsu for the informational videos. Never too late to start, encourage everyone to say that its the day to start.
Quit in Judo in Brownbelt because of works, I am Software Developer, so I dont have time to train any more. Look for BJJ School, near work place. Consider to join it soon.
Traditionally everyone gets a white belt and through time the belt changes color through sweat, blood, and dirt. This was removed because it is unsanitary, but the belt system should come from commitment and time.
@@KainHowl that's actually a myth. Originally the belts were made to make it easier for instructors to tell beginners apart from the advanced level guys. More colors and stuff was added later to further organize and refine how the arts were taught. If you're an instructor with dozens of students it makes things way easier if you know were they're at by just looking at them.
Nearly done my first month of training BJJ and I can't see myself stopping anytime soon. Been binge watching lots of videos from your guys channel. Thanks for the great content! #kataarobelts
Skylar Neff That’s the white belt addiction! I recommend Jiu Jitsu to anyone who will listen.. I remember how excited and all-in I was when I first started 4 years ago.. Keep up the energy, it’s worth it. (From: A shit blue belt)
Years do NOT matter! Gracie's system. You most be able to this consistently! White belt - Beginner Blue belt - You can beat a bigger, stronger opponents who are untrained. Purple belt - You can beat a bigger, stronger, trained opponents. (Massive learning curve) Brown - Noticeable efficacy in energy, speed and movement from a purple belt. Competition ready Black - Master; you are the competition.
@@konev13thebeast yea I’m a 4 stripe white belt and I can dominate bigger new guys in the gym. Although to be fair my coach has told us the only reason we aren’t blue belts is because we’re competing this Saturday and he doesn’t wanna throw it on us until we’re finished
JiuJitsu is not all about beating guys better or worse than you. If I come from another grappling sport like Judo or Wrestling should I automatically get my blue belt? I don't think so. JiuJitsu is a way of life, the more you embrace it, and the more you improve and learn (not only skills but mentallity changes too), the bigger belt you'll achieve.
There isn't a "most important", only "one of the most important". It's foolish to think one thing is superior to the other rather than comparing them and seeing their full potential. I hope that answered your question.
Boo Oui depends. Straight up aggression with discipline is an incredible thing to have (which is why wrestlers do so well in BJJ IMHO). If you don't have natural aggression, then patience and self awareness can negate aggression. The caveat is to PAY ATTENTION TO DETAILS! Slow, sloppy BJJ is absolutely worthless.
I am white belt and i have just 3 weeks training 3 -4 times per week.... but i've learned so much and also i've submitted twice others white belts, i hope i could achieve blue belt at least before 2 years !!!
@@Eclipse240 Naruto is the main character of an anime and he is the lowest rank ninja in their ranking but strong enough to be the leader and protector of the village (hokage). let's just say he was slow to learn theory but excelled at practical training
Really interesting to learn about progression in BJJ (as an outsider). For comparison, chess simply has a rating (called 'ELO') based on outcomes of games. And ice hockey simply has a binary rating: are you pro or not?
It's been a struggle to stay consistent, but any day on the mats has been worth it. This was a very informative video that was also presented very well, thanks for the effort! #kataarobelts
I got myself a Kataaro belt when I got my blue and got one for my daughter when she got hers. She really wanted to get one for our Professor as a Christmas gift last year which he wears all the time for everything he's done in helping her feel more confident and sure of herself. Kama I worked with you at Edison in Huntington Beach. I was totally tripping out at the end of this video lol I'm good with face recognition. Hope all is well brotha !
At 7:30 you hit on what I think is one of the biggest issues with Jiu Jitsu -- they allow white belts to be sloppy, to develop bad habits, to not understand the why. As a fairly new white belt, I figured out this problem because I saw it and asked a few purple belts about it. I said to myself, I'm going to delay my progress and instead, focus on each skillset and drill it until it is at or near the level of a proficient purple. This methodical approach, I believe, is setting me up for later success. But perhaps this is part of the lesson of Jiu Jitsu, that you shouldn't expect the Professor to force you or allow you to be sloppy. Rather, you must set the standard for yourself rather than rely on others, how do you choose to practice?
I got my brown belt in 4 years and after a year as a brown I had to change my school. Some times I think I was promoted pretty quickly but I was teaching everyday with kids and adults. My happiest day will be when I get my black belt and with all this crazy stuff that’s going on now this is the longest I have not been on the mat is five years. Can’t wait to get back on the mat. I’m not bragging and After watching this video anyone at 12 years to get a black belt will be a beast and very very good!!!!! Lol I was one of the folks that watched your 1st belt explanation. It was very informative regardless of the quality of the video. Goes to show you that sometimes less is more. This updated video is great as well. Thanks for all your videos.
I actually really love the idea of the white bat and red bar idea. How the red means your an instructor in training. I really like that
3 year white belt, 5 year blue belt, 4 year purple belt, 1 month at brown. Currently teaching 🙏
6:08 Street Ready vs. Street Proficient. So well put that I returned to this video to know exactly how you put it. 🥋
I found averaging 3 days a week builds decent skills. I don't compete...except with the young bucks in the gym. They keep me sharp.
I rolled with a purple belt last week and it’s the most frustrating and humbling thing.. this guy is just kind of moving around me and I have no idea what they’re doing but before I know it my arms trapped and pushed up against my neck with his legs around my head choking me.. I roll other white belts and think I’m doing ok, then a purple belt literally demolishes me and I’m just confused the entire time😂
I might not be getting this but purple is higher then white so that's why
@@therapidbro2122 Yea you aren't getting it. He's saying although he's a blue, purple is a serious step up and him being a blue gets mopped by a purple.
#kataarobelts
A great way I heard the belt progression explained is:
White belt - learning letters
Blue belt - learning words
Purple belt - learning sentences
Brown belt - learning paragraphs
Black belt- learning poetry
That is a great explanation.
someone's been watching old Kama Jiu-Jitsu videos...
@@KamaJiuJitsu Haha... is that where I got it from? How meta.
Thank you, Michael.

New Braunfels, Texas represent!
i'm glad you made it in with your kids! great bonding activity, choking each other out... LMAO!
A year ago at 45 years old I had super high Cholesterol, Gout, Pre Diabetic. Started Jiu Jitsu and it made me want to change my life and get healthy. I've lost 30lb. No more high cholesterol, gout or prediabetes. Jiu Jitsu changes lives. #kataarobelts

Can you explain the difference between Bjj and japonese jiu jistu !!! also in belt system!!!
We may just do that some day, but jujitsu is far less specific from our understanding. It’ll take research. - Rusty

48yo, just started and looking forward to the journey :)
ELHombre150 you gave me hope
Yeah, 44 and still deciding. Thanks
Too old gtfo
That belt pass transition was smoooooooth
I just started in BJJ and am enjoying the classes (even at the age of 48). I came to this channel because no one actually showed me how to tie the belt. I’ve learned so much more‼️ #kamaarobelts
Great Breakdown! I realized how efficient BJJ is I wish I started sooner! Hey better now then never How Jiu Jitsu has evolved is out of sight God Bless Helio Gracie and the Gracie Family!
That's my favorite video because you explained it better than others on UA-cam
I think the reason this subject get so many views is because people hear the Jujutsu belts are hard to move up.
@John Doe 10years OSS
On avg 10 yrs to black
@@chipturd55 lol most people wont get it in 10 years
@Greg Lurik ig so depends on what curriculum their coach/professor uses to promote
Really interesting information - just got my brown recently from a Royce black belt - my journey was slightly different with 1 year at white, almost 5 years at blue, about 2 1/2 at purple…turning 58 in March - tough road, but so worth it.
Congratulations!
@@KamaJiuJitsu Thanks 🙏 - Feeling like an imposter, but felt that at every belt initially.
Excellent upgrade from the original video, thank you Professor.
Gracie Academy does all their belt testing live, other than Combatives.
Rickson and Pedro pulled Ryron and Rener into line.
Maybe I’ll buy myself a spare from Kataaro when I earn my blue belt. For now I like my dingy, beat up, white belt. Thank you for another interesting video. Please keep making more!
I got my black belt in 3 to 5 business days after ordering one online. Beat the process by 11 years and 51 weeks!
"When you get.upset that you cant train, that's the time for purple belt" I'm a one stripe white belt atm and I'm upset when I cant train, looks like purple belt for me next!
Corona virus just promoted thousands of purple belts
Guy, chill. You’ll still get your cheeks clapped often by people your same rank 🤫
Burn Er my bjj gym closed down because of covid
Kelvin Gonzalez I think it was a joke mate, chill
Me too lol
I just turned 49 and I hope to stay healthy enough to train for another 20 years. Thank you Professor Young for the very helpful content. I’ve read great reviews about the #kataarobelts I’m looking forward to getting one for my next rank!
9 year brown belt and I still enjoy learning the basics, thanks for the great video. OSS. #kataarobelts
Al Bundy, the man who threw 4 touchdowns in one game..........and has a legit black belt in Gracie jiu-jitsu.
Great video. Interesting note on the stripes, or lack of, for several of the belts. I know many GJJ/BJJ schools, including ours, that award strips for all belt levels.
I loved seeing the senior instructors instructors, their black belts were so worn they started turning white again.
Excellent explanation.
YESSS!!!
My seven year old son at Gracie North in Yakima just got his silver(gray) belt after 3 years.
Great video explaining the belts. Those also look like great belts!
Quit in Judo in Brownbelt because of works, I am Software Developer, so I dont have time to train any more. Look for BJJ School, near work place. Consider to join it soon.
I loved that original video. It was one of the first videos I watched when I considered BJJ.
Omg I’m just realised I watched your old one earlier this year
"Black belts are for some people, they may not be for me" mentality is exactly why you're a black belt... you're a humble dude..much respect..
My instructor doesn’t give belts by time he instead gives belts when he thinks you are worthy
Like it should be!
It seems like that is the norm... That's why he said it's such a range in time
Traditionally everyone gets a white belt and through time the belt changes color through sweat, blood, and dirt. This was removed because it is unsanitary, but the belt system should come from commitment and time.
@@KainHowl No it should come from skill.
That video was great. Packed with information which helped me in my final decision on jiu-jitsu or Karate 🙏🏾
Great video!!
On a side note: the amount of people humble bragging in this comment section is ridiculous!!
Humble bragging. Lmaaaaooo
Well done. I am extremely impressed by this fascinating history.
@@xMURPHv give yourself credit for your achievement in getting blue belt. It's a long road of hard work and dedication. Well done and be proud
This was a great segment.
Thank you!
Years do NOT matter! Gracie's system. You most be able to this consistently!
White belt - Beginner
Blue belt - You can beat a bigger, stronger opponents who are untrained.
Purple belt - You can beat a bigger, stronger, trained opponents. (Massive learning curve)
Brown - Noticeable efficacy in energy, speed and movement from a purple belt. Competition ready
Black - Master; you are the competition.
White belts you should be able to beat bigger stronger opponents who are untrained (assuming they arent a competitive strength athlete or bodybuilder)
what about Red belts?
I study karate and I love kataaro belts!
I got my blue belt after a year.
Then...I stayed blue for 7 years.
I hope to stay purple for no more than 5 years.
damn thats a long time 7 years? maybe you suck bro? im just kidding you know more than i do clearly but soem are slwoer than others i guess..
Thank you, Sir! Very informative video
What’s the more important in Bjj; Patience, self-awareness or straight up aggression?
To all of you saying you're still x color after y time: Naruto became hokage as a genin so titles not always tell the truth LMAO
No idea what that means but thank you.

thank you guys so much, i watched your original video a while ago and now this one too!
Master Ryan- I liked your 1st belt video filmed with your crappy little camera!! Coming from a 1 striped white belt!!! Lol
This video was very helpful!
Glad it was helpful!
Really interesting to learn about progression in BJJ (as an outsider).
For comparison, chess simply has a rating (called 'ELO') based on outcomes of games.
And ice hockey simply has a binary rating: are you pro or not?
Very instructive
It's been a struggle to stay consistent, but any day on the mats has been worth it. This was a very informative video that was also presented very well, thanks for the effort!

I got myself a Kataaro belt when I got my blue and got one for my daughter when she got hers. She really wanted to get one for our Professor as a Christmas gift last year which he wears all the time for everything he's done in helping her feel more confident and sure of herself. I've loved watching my daughter grow the way she has because of Jiu-Jitsu, our great professors, and our family of training partners at our academy. #kataarobelts
Awesome video and great hearing Dave’s perspective too. This month marks my 7th year training! #kataarobelts

Kama I worked with you at Edison in Huntington Beach. I was totally tripping out at the end of this video lol I'm good with face recognition. Hope all is well brotha !
Man if you started bjj at 8 years old you would have to be 53 at the earliest to become a grand master. that's a crazy long time.
I’m still learning everyday and I feel like I will never stop learning ,I love that about bjj
Good video, I see different colors on other Jiu Jitsu place, like White to Grey white...
