    I like this one better, the emotion, the acting, the automatons, the singing... it's kept to the bare minimum budget-wise but it's much more engaging. I think whoever directed the clockwork one only had the dancing in mind. This one really has soul.

    There are versions of this with more actors, better sets and choreography.
    But this has by far the best singing and acting. For instance, the facial dialogue of the actor playing Priscilla is amazing - and the two women supporting Jasper are strangely emotive.

    There are so many comments about how this version is better than The Clockwork Heart Production... The reason for that is because THIS IS the first production of the Opera, with the original cast. Although this video was posted in 2015 here, you can find it on Vimeo, having been posted back in 2013, around the time the soundtrack was released.

      @three years late, but I think it’s pretty unfair to say “only one with a soul”, because I’d argue that Voodoopunk in this show was.. YIKES. Bayreuth KNOCKED IT OUT OF THE BARK with their portrayal of Voodoopunk, despite the fact I have a massive distaste for their singing in the entirety of the musical. Really, I think if you took the music from this show and added it to the portrayal and performances of Bayreuth, we’d probably have what Paul envisioned.
      This show felt a bit too light and awkward in my opinion, they stretched it rather thin with actors and any real interesting scenes.
      The Bonfire of The Dolls was also one of my favorites from Bayreuth, but I also believe the one uploaded last year by Stage 2 Productions was incredibly well done. Big fan of how the actors fought and even killed over the riot of the Dolls, that was also portrayed in Bayreuth’s adaptation.
      I honestly believe this one felt more focused on the singing and acting rather than the set or background characters. Byron feels rather hollow compared to how Clockwork OR Bayreuth portrayed him. Wasn’t actually a fan of Stage 2’s Byron. lol
      Amelia is also rather underdeveloped in this one oddly enough? Bayreuth’s was rather good in that aspect of showing how desperately Amelia wished for Byron’s connection, and how he was wistfully unaware and focused on Jasper.
      I wish we got any other people to help the dude in Voodoopunk.. that was pretty cool but it felt cringeworthy after how uncomfortable the rest of the actors looked once he started trying to involve them. Bayreuth’s Voodoopunk is probably one of my favorites set wise, but their dancing is pretty boring. Take this dude and slap him in Bayreuth’s, he’d kill it so hard!
      It’s really weird how Bayreuth’s adaptation managed to flesh out and build up the characters and the surroundings more than a show Paul himself was involved in.
      Would love to know the budget for all of these shows, because we just need it to get a proper one

    The actor who plays Edgar and the Soldier is actually amazing. My vote for MVP of the show. Anabelle was awesome too, but this guy has such a powerful, passionate voice, and his face is just a canvas for emotion. Even when he's singing supportively he sounds amazing and almost steals the show.

    I remember thinking about how nice Annabel's voice in this was, when I looked it up and saw that it was actually the girl who voiced Annabel! Plus, the first time I watched this, I was thinking that the guy playing Edgar sounded more like John and Connor (who I lovingly refer to as Sad Dad). I looked it up, and he did play John and Connor in the second and third operas!

    I love the voice for Jasper, what with Shapera on the piano and unable to do it. Plus, Jasper actually seems to have a little more character in this, finally seeing it live... that little "boop" on Priscilla's nose, the way he himself reaches out to touch her shoulder before his doll-self gets shot... and the work with the puppet was so well done!

      I think the original was more brooding, but I feel, because of the setting, that this Jasper’s voice sounds more aligned to the era. (basically it sounds more steampunk-y)
      same with Jason broderick, Although oliver marsh was rlly good as edgar, byron, and soldier 7285. I feel like Jason and this jasper add more of an era check (what am i even saying Lol) but hey that’s just my opinion I think both jaspers are fine in every version

    I never saw the Play or Opera, but I have listened to the Album and I will honestly cry at the end all the time. (I'm literally rewriting this comment)
    So to begin in my perceptive of the Dolls of New Albion. I had imagined and put a lot of thoughts into Annabel's two songs, 'Annabel Raise the Dead' and 'Annabel's Lament' and then there's Jasper song 'Elysian Night'. To start off, I will kinda decipher both Annabel and Jasper's past. In the 'Old Truck in the Attic,' We learn that Annabel's mother was a ballerina and probably had a lover who was a soldier but had to marry Annabel's father who could have been a scientist, who lost an eye during one of his experiments. Annabel had an uncle who literally paid a girl's mother to leave, and she also has an older sister and sibling who died at a very young age. Jasper, on the other hand, could have been a nobody or a boy from a poor family since it appears the McAlistairs are a wealthy successful family of great and amazing achievers.
    To actually begin their tale and where everything began, we would start from Jasper's song 'Elysian Night' and I Google the meaning "Elysian" or "Elysium" and it means paradise or a heavenly place and after listen to Elysian Night over and over, I realize Jasper isn't singing about heaven and what it brings. He's actually singing about the most blissful time he remembers while he was once alive. His past.
    In the first verse of 'Elysian Night,' Jasper must have ended up in the nice part of New Albion one night. He appears with one shoe on and was probably wandering around, gazing up at the sky until he came across Annabel. They got along greatly to where they would meet up almost on a regular basis, talking and yearning for things they want for their future. Now Annabel could have truly wanted to be a scientist at the time as passion, not as something forced onto her later. By the end of Elysian Night, Jasper then sings about how he never saw, hug or knew where Annabel went. In which he became a lonely boy once more. He was sad, probably felt guilty thinking he did something wrong to Annabel to make her leave, and shame himself for thinking he could ever be friends with someone of a higher class like her. Which "In one soft breath like candlelight. Dispersed in endless Elysian Night" The final night or time he will ever see Annabel, a lost lullaby.
    Now that's Jasper and Annabel's background as friends.
    They both grown, Annabel attends school and it's probably an Acadamy for rich kids or very smart people. Annabel was a good student, she had amazing work skill and work really hard in her classes. So much so, she's anti-social. That doesn't mean she won't ignore the teasing from HER. Whoever SHE is...and again Annabel was a good student, but something lack in Annabel's work. Passion. Annabel would work day in and day out, studying, avoid people and make minimal connect unless it is with her teachers. Which is why...Jasper could never get anywhere near Annabel.
    Jasper, a child from nothing, works his ass off to get into Annabel's school. He isn't' from a rich family, so he did whatever he could to get into Annabel's school. All in order to finally meet her again. Sadly, Jasper is a nice guy, good looking and humble, so much so. He became the popular boy among the student body.
    So how was Jasper able to meet and see Annabel once again...Prom Night. Jasper went to prom in hopes that Annabel will make an appearance and guess what. She did. Jasper was lucky enough to see Annabel again, and in the same way, they first met, at night where the stars are beautiful and a boy Annabel hardly knew speaks with her. Suddenly, out of nowhere, Jasper had the balls to kiss Annabel. Showing his true feeling. Then tragic strike, someone saw them kiss and it was no doubt HER. And whoever SHE is, told someone. After that beautiful Elysian night for both Jasper and Annabel. Annabel was expelled.
    Separated again, Jasper could have been forced to marry HER, as whoever SHE is, got the boy of her dreams. Had a child with him, and suddenly Jasper dies. Jasper isn't from a rich or high-class family. He could have...duh duh DUUHHH. Been murder.
    Annabel didn't truly remember Jasper from her childhood, but she was devastated that he died. Then she gets this crazy notion about raising the dead. Annabel does a countless experiment and practices alchemy to summon a soul. She puts her heart and soul into bringing Jasper back.
    Once he does come back, Annabel is overcome by her very first real success, she forgets Jasper as a person and starts to treat him like a trophy or a doll. Because she thrilled and with the idea of being an achiever by her father. Jasper who is conscious and has feelings is trying to get Annabel's attention with radio broadcast manipulation. He wants to know why Annabel brought him back, because of no doubt, he thought Annabel once again abandon him. He probably wasn't told she was expelled and SHE probably spoke lie to Jasper about Annabel, only wanting to be Achiever.
    Annabel's action convinces Jasper of HER lies.
    Finally, Annabel starts to realize her doll isn't speaking to her at all, as she still believes the doll is just broadcasting until she truly takes the time to sit down and wonder. If her doll can actually speak, and Jasper answer with "Elysium. The place. The when your sorrows end. Why would you bring me here?"
    Then it dawned on Annabel...Elysium...The Place...and The when both their sorrow of loneliness end.
    Annabel then starts to remember, and she then sings her lament or of her past. Of what happened, and why. She remembers about the dreams and memories she had with Jasper when they were children, but because of her father, she tried to forget about Jasper and her friendship, but she couldn't and instead would daydream about their relationship and would always regret letting go of their friendship. She then sings about how she got a hang of math and how she wanted to please her father. She even disciplines to herself into studying, until she was all by herself in Numberland.
    She then cries about Jasper, being her Angel, and if she hadn't left him. They could have been together. And that those were the only thoughts that keep Annabel sane. She was sad and convinced herself, Jasper was in the way of her success like her father told her. It then Annabel really starts to remember Jasper's dreams, their dreams of being together and wondering, who Jasper wanted be when he grows up. Annabel's then has a heavy breakdown, realizing she must have failed so much, her dreams derailed uncontrollably, she even fails Jasper. Regretting hard and wishing harder for Jasper to be her Angel. She destroys Jasper's body...but didn't free his soul.
    Years later, Annabel married, but I don't think it was out of love. Annabel had a sister, but she probably didn't want to marry or really want kids. So Annabel's father, if he's still alive, has Annabel marry a man who will take on the family name McAlistair. She's then pregnant and guess what...she has a son. She named him Edgar. A charming young boy.
    Annabel doesn't want Edgar to be like her, forced to be something he doesn't want to be. Annabel's father hears this crazy notion and. Guess what?...Annabel dies. Edgar's father didn't care, his grandfather didn't shed a tear and his aunt didn't appear at the funeral. Now after Edgar goes to school falls in love with Fay, she breaks his heart. And now he wants revenge. He brings Jasper back to a new body. Jasper then has a front row seat to see how Edgar treats Fay, and how Fay turns from a sweet happy child into a cold bitter woman. He watches his grandson grows up as a homosexual with a thing for dolls. Especially him. Then he sings Elysian Night, thinking about better days, he has the other spirits who are also trapped in mechanic bodies, play the song with him to think on better days. Until finally, Priscilla is born. She looks like her grandmother, but she's more like her great-grandmother, Annabel. Priscilla is the same like Annabel in a sense of a spiral but she's also different
    Like the Narrator sing, "Circles never stop themselves, nothing that's you've ever held. Were you promised or reneged and sometimes when you lose, you win." Jasper watched as the McAlistair gone from great to fall. He couldn't save Annabel, he couldn't hold his daughter, and while he thinks he's losing, especially his mind since he caused a young woman to kill herself. All he has left is his great-granddaughter, Priscilla. And it's then he realizes, he was the one being selfish in the end. Wanting to save Priscilla, he begs her to run and overcame his stiff body to move easily in order to protector her. It's then...Priscilla must have read into Annabel's notes and speaking the summoning spell in reverse and sends Jasper's soul back to the world of the dead. Priscilla is happy that she was able to save Jasper and died. Holding the doll, she loved dearly.
    If you got this far into reading this comment. Jasper and Annabel is the sadness couple I have ever imagine in my life.

    This is a much better adpatation than the other one on that Clockwork Hart Productions channel. It doesn't have any nonesensical dancers, and the slightly slower music fits better.
    And apparently shapera produced this. I guess it shows.

      I would pay to see him perform each 'episode' as an act in a complete "The Saga of New Albion" (or somesuch) opera in New York. Hell, I would help organise it.

    To my taste, this is the best performance of this opera. Having just listened to another version, I found the voices of that rendition flat and lacking the emotional investment that these actors achieve. For my money, this cast and version is entirely more enjoyable.

    The only things I reeeaally have any complaints about were at the very end, when Priscilla is singing their last lines, I felt like they shot her too fast. And lastly when they didn't add the lines asking why he didn't fire, for me I really think it drives home the message that he has changed his heart.
    Other than that I laughed, cried and really enjoyed it~

    • @AlphaLackey
      @AlphaLackey 7 років тому +7

      Regarding Soldier 7285 having a change of heart, I think he acted really well and explained that with his inactions. He's supposed to be leading the execution, but keeps exchanging dialogue with a feeling of "okay now I'm really really REALLY totally gonna shoot you this time FOR SURE" and he can't pull the trigger, and his subordinates have to do the killing and give him a field demotion right on the spot.
      As good as he was as 7285, I thought he was fantastic as Edgar

      Pretty sure Annabelle's lover that she revitalized was a 'he'. But yes, in full agreement, it is a lovely Act.

      My friends these elections this season to come
      Your capitalists, socialists, facists and bums
      Your left and your right are both out of their heads
      So this year for office we’re running the dead
      Vote for our Doll for his stance never bends
      He knows we are equal when it comes to the end
      Your money and taxes, your debts and your gains
      One day at the end we will all be the same
      Your government robs you and bleeds you and now
      My friend’s one day soon will come break your door down
      Instead of the system my friends walk away
      Come ride at the crossroads come do it today
      You think that this world you live in is all?
      Come feel the spirit the Baron he calls
      Don’t be a zombie vote dead all the way
      Vote voodoopunk we dance with you on your grave

    • @benbroadbent5206
      @benbroadbent5206 8 років тому +3

      Amelia is the wife of Byron, and the mother of Priscilla. Edgar does not abuse her: they are a generation apart. Edgar married Fay and had a son, Byron, but she and Amelia are played by the same actor.

      I, Darkstar X Hmmm. Maybe it is Edgar who abuses Amelia? Or possibly her own father, as Byron's father is Edgar, but Amelia would have her own father? I think it's meant to be her own father, not Edgar, though the limited range of actors necessitates reuse.

    • @Panic_Pickle
      @Panic_Pickle 8 років тому +5

      So to quote the script Amelia is "one of the most prominent girls from the voodoo punk party". No relation is ever stated, however she is likely focused on due to her suicide.

    • @swishfish8858
      @swishfish8858 8 років тому

      Wait, where are you guys getting the idea that it was Amelia that killed herself? I didn't get that vibe at all from the original album, I always assumed it was a random girl in a random broken home. Especially since Byron doesn't have any reaction.
      Other than the fact that it's all the same singer/actress of course, but the same can be said for basically the whole album, it has a very minimalist cast.
