BOOK CLIFFS ARCHERY MULE DEER HUNT 2019 - BRYCE'S BUCK - "BIG MAC" - ROADLESS AREA

  • After more than ten years of applying, some close friends and I were finally able to draw the Limited Entry archery tag for the Book Cliffs. We wanted to make the most of this opportunity so the scouting began early. After several trips to check for some bucks from last year and to set some trail cameras, things were starting to shape up. We had several large bucks located and patterned.
    It was decided to backpack into the Roadless area to get away from the majority of the hunters to hopefully have plenty of un-pressured bucks to hunt. That is exactly what we found and the effort was well worth it.
    The buck I was lucky enough to harvest is one we called Big Mac and is truly the buck of a lifetime. He is the largest buck I have ever taken I am absolutely thrilled with him. His mass sets him apart from all other bucks I have ever had the opportunity to hunt. We learned from the Division that he is now nine years old making him one of the oldest bucks on the unit and a true trophy in my eyes.
    A great deal of gratitude goes out to each of my friends that was there to help. It would have been exponentially more difficult without them and their help. I undoubtedly would not have been able to kill Big Mac without them.
    Thanks for watching.

    Man this looks like the dream mule deer hunt. Lots of bucks, cool country, shooting off cliffs!! I like it. When I saw the collar buck i was like "dang I'd shoot him, heavy old buck"! Happy to see you got him. Heck of a buck man and great video. congrats

      Thanks Eric. I appreciate it. It was an amazing hunt for sure! I can't wait to be back on the Books with a buck tag again. Too bad it will take another 15 years or so.

    HAHA Dude I made that exact same shot except up hill yesterday at about 50yrds and shot right above a MONSTER 3pt. doing the extended archery and was able to get to a few spots with some good chances. I have never seen a 3pt this big in my life. I'm hoping to head backup and see if he is a creature of habit and hopefully in the same bowl. Oh and my son's name is Noah too! lol

    Awesome buck! I drew a Nine Mile general season tag.Any advice on how a DIY one man hunt could go in that area?

    • @BMCBryce
      @BMCBryce  4 роки тому

      Thank you Clayton. I am not familiar with the Nine Mile unit. Sorry I can’t offer any suggestions other than what I always tell people... by getting into areas that others aren’t willing to, you’ll find yourself ahead of the game. The further away from roads you go, the fewer people you’ll see and usually, that translates to more game and more opportunities.
      Best of luck!

    What a stud buck. Congrats. Since you shot it with the collar, does the DWR give you all the information about the buck or do they keep it to themselves?

    • @BMCBryce
      @BMCBryce  3 роки тому

      Thanks Kip. It was an amazing experience and I truly loved that hunt so much. As far as the info on the buck goes, I was given a few bits and pieces on the deer. They aren’t able to give the specific details as far as where he traveled and routes used. I know he was 9.5 years old when I killed him. I actually have a set of sheds from him two years before I killed him. I really wanted to find his set from the year before... but no dice so far.

    awesome buck and video will the DNR give you any data from his collar congrats

    • @BMCBryce
      @BMCBryce  2 роки тому

      Thanks man. I appreciate the kind words. As far as the data from the buck’s collar, I asked about it but wasn’t given much. I returned the collar to the biologist(s) that had captured and put it on him - so that they could re-use it on another deer. It does kind of suck that I wasn’t given any of that data. I’d love to know where he wintered so I could have a chance at locating his sheds. But I was told that was very sensitive information and I wasn’t privy to it.
      Oh well. I don’t want to make waves. I care more about mule deer and seeing them being protected and succeed as a species, than finding sheds. So it’s all good.

    Hey Bryce, just out of curiosity, do you know where they collared him.? I drew a Book Cliffs South Rifle tag and I'm wondering where the Roadless deer migrate to in late October... thanks for any help bro, congrats again on a tank.!

    • @BMCBryce
      @BMCBryce  2 роки тому +1

      Hey man. When I killed that buck, I was very hopeful to be able to obtain the info from the collar. I met with the biologist (who is a good friend of mine) to give back the collar so it could be used again on another deer. He said the info or data points provided by the collars on these deer is property of the state, so I wasn’t allowed to access it. So, long answer to your question is - I do not know… but I wish I did. That would open up a lot of shed hunting opportunities as well as hunting later in the year opportunities for me as well.
      Best of luck man.

      Thanks Jay! Very kind of you. I’m actually headed to the Uintas this weekend for a moose hunt. Trying to help a close friend kill a bull. Should be a blast. We’ve got a bunch of good tags this year, so… with any luck, I’ll be able to put out a bunch more videos. Hopefully at least one or two will have some decent footage.
      Back to the Books… There were a lot of really good bucks out there the year I had the archery tag (19). I hope you’re able to find at least one tank and then get him killed. No matter what, I’m sure you’ll have fun though.
      Good luck and I hope to hear and see how you do.

    So I've been watching ur videos since I learned what utube was and all the hunting I could watch if I was to have it on my phone hahaha That is one hell of a buck man. Congrats to u and all ur buddy's. It was obviously a team effort so I have to say to all of ya. I've never personally seen a buck with mass anywhere near that and he has cool character also with the baby fist and all lol I believe that's what he called it. To bad no film of the shot though. Is like to hear more about it honestly. How long u been watching him or was this the first, was he top of ur hit list if u had been watching him, did u just happen upon him or did u know he was in this area. Sorry so many questions, I just like the whole story. Let us know what he scores. Great vid once again. Thanks

      Billy Reeves Hey Billy, thank you for the feedback. I appreciate it more than you might realize. He was a buck that we had located in our scouting efforts earlier on - well before the hunt. He was on my list, but he was not in my top 5 (which may sound absolutely crazy). I love big typicals and was after a big boy I called Roger. We were not able to find him and I had several close encounters with a big four point that had a cheater (the buck I missed in the video). We had seen Big Mac (the buck I killed) every day we were out there. So I made the decision to go after him and kill him. I blew the first attempt on him but he wasn’t so lucky on the second attempt. At eight yards, he took his last step. He has a total of 47 inches of mass and scores 183 and some change. There’s a bit more of the story for you. I hope that helps fill in some of the gaps. I wished so bad we had the shot on camera, but it wasn’t meant to be. Take care.

      I can’t get enough of it. With not too much effort you can get away from the crowds and see some incredible country. There never seem to be as many deer in the roadless, but sometimes they are bigger and certainly are not as pressured. That’s the kind of hunt I was looking for. So it was very well worth it to me.
