Through a lifetime of working on cars, Dan Walters still has the itch | Why I Drive #15

- For Dan Walters, cars represent a lifelong interest as well as a career. Walters started off working at a gas station and later a garage, then a Ford dealership, and eventually opened his own collision shop, so he has lived and breathed car culture his entire life. He loves to wrench on prewar metal, motorcycles, and more, but one of his favorite cars is his 1950 Mercury coupe. He’s owned it for 45 years, and the flame is still alive.

I really enjoyed that video, albeit it was entirely too short! I could listen to hours worth of stories this gentleman no doubt has to share.
Thank you for bringing this video to us!
Regards,
Jon Crawford
I second that. These videos could be longer.
Agreed, I'd love to hear some stories from him
Have to agree with the others. WAY TOO SHORT !!! At least spend 10 minutes with Dan getting "familiar" with the Merc. Show the engine compartment and listen to what Dan has to tell about its history. Anything about the interior or the exterior since he has had it for so long???
My grandfather also had a 1950 Mercury coupe in this color, so great to see this one being driven and enjoyed!
We must appreciate Dan Walters, and all he and many of him alike represent. The LOVE of American car history.
Back in 1972 a friend of mine bought a low mileage ( 12,000 ) 1949 Chevy Deluxe off a neighbor that was going into a nursing home for $150.00. It still had the original dealer installed seat covers on it and when we took them off the mohair seats were like new underneath. It had a lot of original options that were available that year like rock guards, bumper over riders, push button radio and clock and everything worked.
Great video & story but way too short. Now, go back and let Dan tell you about all the iron sitting in his garage - but slow, very slow and in detail.
Wow! What a cool collection and that garage in nice!
I was thinking the exact same thing. I'm 39 and by the time I'm his age I see myself in his shoes
Not all of the millennials are ruining the old car game. 17 and my ‘49 Chevy is doing just fine
My dad bought a 49 Mercury, new, when he was living in Fargo. He told me many times how he used to drive it fast to get to Watertown, SD to see my mother on weekends. He said he had to get it tuned up often after his high speed trips. I never saw it, I was born in 1956, and he had just bought a 56 Mercury that year. We had the 56 until 63, when he got a new one with the Breezeway window.
Anither cool story. Thank you :-)
With such a gentleman I could talk car and forget anything else. ......wonderful...
Cheers to Mr.DanWalters as we're around the same age and seem to like similar things...hope the old man keeps going!
I’m like you Dan. I have loved cars since I was a little kid and loved every minute of driving since my dad let me drive around the driveway starting at 13. Great video, beautiful car and lovey story.
I like the way Dan explained having temperament to put up with the non power working components in his classic car. You have a lot of patience. Enjoy your ride.
Dan, I like your ride and your way of thinking, Thank You for sharing that great looking car!
Dan the man
With engine sound blended in, this is golden!
I’ve had three flatheads in my day. They great motorbike
S g
Fforbtheitbtimr
They were great motors to work on. Put a set of 30”
Lass packs them and sounded really cool.
Them
So good to see another vintage (original) Merc saved and being driven. Just wish my 52 was as clean and rust free as this one.
Thanks! What a treat.
I could hang out with this guy talking shop for hours. A most genuine guy.
Great video Hagerty, although its to short. I'm 67 yrs young and a life long gear head. Was a line mechanic for 27 years. My favorite driver was a 1972 Datsun 510 2dr sedan. I dropped in a SSSL20 racing engine from Japan, a 5spd trans from a 200SX, lowered it 1.5", Bilstein shocks, and sway bars. Those old 510's were easy to work on, cheap on parts, and a blast to drive. A real sleeper. I loved humiliating Alfa's, Vette's, Porsche's, and Beemers at the local autocross events. Owned that car for 14 years, then sold it to a friend who drove it another 8, until it was rear ended and totaled!! Today my driver is a slightly modified Mustang GT. Love that V8 rumble, but it don't handle like that old 510! Sure miss that car.
Love this channel. Changing my life now so I can have a nice garage some day filled. I love anything auto related, swap meats, rat rods, mini trucks, flat heads, model T, muscle cars, resto mods,
Frank - Thank you for watching. Best of luck!
I'm a millennial and I love to drive and a 50 merc is a dream car of mine. I've said it before and I'll say it again we aren't all lazy video game addicted losers some of us still have the fire!
Maybe if we could afford a 50 merc for the cost of "a used car"
I'm 19 and my first car was a 1954 Packard sedan I paid 800 bucks for. Still haven't finished it but it's getting there
Yep, I'm 23 and grew up with mid-50's Fords. We're few and far between, but the passion for old cars is still alive.
Thanks for your comment. Very nice to know some of the younguns out there share our passion.
My wife is quite a few years younger than me and she has no interest whatsoever in driving. Hell she flat out refuses most the time. Absolutely blows my mine. I was stealing my truck to go drive around at 14 and had a hardship by 15
God bless you buddy we all share the same Love in This Hobby
Love the video. But.... don’t blame us young guys for killing the old car game. It’s the old timers with money driving the cost of these cars up from these auctions that makes us turn away from them. We can’t afford the real sought after cars out there. I have a 75 Dodge Dart with a 440 in it that unbuild from ground up that used to have a slant 6. Is the dart the first car I wanted? No. I want a 68 charger but they are to expensive to even buy a shell.
You make a great point. Thank you for being a fan!
I bought a 72 dart swinger hardtop coupe when i was 15 in '04 and fixed it up for a year before i got my license. loved that damn car, even with the 225. Good times, wish i still had it.
Buy a 2005 Honda civic and in 50 years time people will be waving at you as you drive down the road. You may even be on Why I Drive #7557
meganspecv my first car was a 74 duster with a slant 6. Baby blue car and blue interior.
The prices will drop. As us old guys die the market glut will favor the buyers. It's inevitable. Show cars need to be freshened up regularly, if not re-restored every generation or so. Couple this with fewer enthusiasts, many of todays special interest cars become weekly drivers and that's not a bad thing.
Beautiful kinetic sculpture.
Way to go Dan !!!
I wanted this to be much longer. Good story.
Thanks Dan!!!Nice......
great vid. shame it wasn't longer. So much history.
Awesome car guy, awesome car, love this series
Beautiful
Great story, he has some rather interesting motorcycles as well!
what a beauty
man that car is perfect i love the old cars those flat head engines really sound beautiful back when they were proud Americans auto workers they put pride into all those vehicles
Good comment. Most definately pride.
Awesome why I drive video! That car is so cool and looks incredible! Love it! Love the video like always!
Thanks for watching!
Great car!
Beautiful car
It would be great to see a younger guy in these types of videos, I drive my '70 Mercedes because it's a piece of history and keeping it alive is an honor bestowed upon me. Great video!
Gabriel - Thanks for watching!
Gabriel Guillermo check out the other Why I Drive videos on the Hagerty channel. Many feature younger drivers, both men and women.
We appreciate that Eric. Thanks for being a fan!
Freedom! Beautiful!
This could be a trailer for Barn Find Hunter. Get Tom over to Dan's garage! We want to hear the stories!
Yes! I was thinking the same thing. Hurry Dan ... hurry
Great story
Love the Merc, great video
Thank you for watching!
Such a nice car and it sound good too.
Cool Gentleman !
I hear ya Dan.
so rare to see one that isn't messed with . Don't see that much these days.
I think Tom from Barn Find Hunter should visit Mr. Walters. Have him show off his collection and shoot the poop with Tom. I think your subscribers would enjoy that!
I'm hoping Dan does make that visit. :-)
I’ll second THAT motion ‼️🎯🍺
Fantástico !!!
I plan on one day having a garage with old classic cars like that I'm almost 3 yrs in a transmission shop and just got a 92 camaro rs to rebuild it's a 305 tbi and I'm going I keep it stock as much as I can but at the same time try and get power out of it just put on a new water pump, new thermostat chrome thermostat housing now I'm gonna put a new harmonic balancer and thermostat temp sensor I'm also gonna put on an edlebrock intake manifold, new headers most likely new exhaust get a edlebrock camshaft and so on I plan on putting as much edlebrock parts on and in my car so I can build it and paint it for car shows
King❤️💓
“...become one with your machine..”
😎👍❤️
All classic cars have there own personality and little imperfections and every owner knows his or her car like the back of there hand its not like a new car how anybody could just jump in and drive no a classic has a certain way about her how not everybody can just jump in n drive, the owner has to explain how the car is and exactly what needs to be done to be able to drive it and that is what makes each one individually special!
"where you could REALLY drive around like a lunatic"
So true. It's not so much lunacy as it is calculated chaos. I'm 34 and got my license at 16. I can't imagine life any other way.
How do you even dislike something like this
Nice to see a 50 Mercury that isn't all rodded and lead sleded.
Agreed. Kinda forgot what they looked like.
Where do you get those badass canvas plug wires?
I’m a millennial and I love to drive my 64 SS Impala
Funny how he bought it in my hometown
Saved from Minnesota road salt and death by rust and rot!
👍 God bless
not corny,...one with the machine
That car sounds like the Green Hornets ride
👏👏👏👏👏
A very interesting way of life to bad it wasn't a longer story...
Im a Gen Z in really obsessed to antique cars
If I hear anymore millennial bashing...here I am and I’ve been into this hobby my whole life, I’ve got a ‘39 LaSalle I drive all the time and I’m usually the only one out there Millennial or otherwise.
Will - Thank you for being a fan!
Will ----- I get tired of millennial bashing myself. I'm 75.
In the 50s out on the prairie there were hardly any cops. We could get away with driving like maniacs whereas Millennials and younger can get in big trouble in our more urbanized society of today...... Almost all of us survived.
Also the vehicles could be worked on with basic hand tools and used cars were cheap.
Sexy car wow passion Dan Walter's has jah bless all
One with your car, that's what it's all about!
very similar with Sheriff from Cars
❤✨❤✨❤
I'm millenial, I always wanted to drive a car..........my parents were big on making me self reliant.
I don't know what will happen to me if I saw that car on the streets .
Im the gen right after the millennials and I love driving my 77 el camino
There's no were to escape today..
Это "Победа", детка.

As a Millenial ill won't disagree that our generation doesn't care about driving, but I have a large group of friends who are all hot rodders and ricers, with a great mix of classic muscle and 80's imports. and for the most part, the perception my generation has that classics are expensive are false. restored classics are expensive, but getting a running restoration is not(unless its a Mopar). I was able to buy my dream car last year (79' z28 w/ T tops) for about 3,000$ and the total resto should be about 10,000$ invested. at the end of it ill have a faster and more reliable car than those 25-35,000$ new cars.
Thank you for the perspective and thank you for being a fan!
I am interested in your product but I don't bother with ads that aren't up front with the price. NO, I'm NOT going to try to purchase this item just to find out the price. BE MORE UP FRONT AND HONEST AND LESS GIMMICKY.
Congrats. I’m going to jump out in traffic now because I sold my Camaro to get married and turned out a huge loser.
Grerat video but the generation gap comment is quite funny. Just a different world now. There are still plenty of petrol heads.
Gear-heads come in all shapes, sizes, and ages. Thanks for watching!
doc
Cobra car
Cmon!! So, what are those "idiosyncrasies" (with the flatheads) that you need to learn???
Pappa Bob ------ Overheating was one.
If old people didn't always hold cars for money purposes and didn't ask for top dollar us millennials would have more passion for older vehicles. It's hard to even afford parts for my 67 beetle. You should give young people a break
Alfonso - Thank you for being a fan! We're happy to have you here.
nice story but the slowmo and dramatic music's cheesy as hell >.
now.... that car is worth 80,000
millennials can't afford them
"I'm told THE millennials aren't concerned about driving" ... uh OK boomer
Just don't make 'em like that anymore...the old cars too.
You heard millenials aren't concerned with driving 🤣 he must watch a lot of fox news
