I retired 10 years ago this month and can’t say I ever missed working at my profession. Unfortunately my husband died unexpectedly the year after I retired and if I can give anyone a piece advice, if you’re thinking about retiring, just do it! One never knows what’s around the corner, be it a stroke or loss of a loved one.

I am 63 years old and have been taking caring of my 87-year-old mother for two years now. She has glaucoma and can't see very well. I am also a business broker and don't see retirement in my near future. My situation does not give me much time for myself. However, I do take time out to go for walks and sing, which is my stress outlet. I also have spinal stenosis and have chronic back pain. As much as I love my mother, it can be very taxing on me, as there are days when it's difficult for me to even take care of myself. The best advice I can give those who take care of their aging parents is to try to find some time for yourself.

I'm in my 4th year of retirement and I never looked back. I don't even talk with any former coworkers. They checked up on me after I retired, but once I left, I didn't want to maintain any of those relationships. I wanted a new life. Sounds like your stroke was a blessing in disguise since an aneurysm was discovered that needs repair.

I’m sorry you had to explain your new house purchase and your motives for making it your home. I don’t understand why people, have to tear each other down. I am interested in watching the progress, so keep those updates coming! The basement is beautiful and so conducive for the renovation. You’re right there and can keep good tabs on things. Hang in there and you owe no one an explanation.❤️

Well, I wouldn't be asking for any explanation or be rude to her. But that's just me. One thing though, when you put your life out there for all to see and hear, unfortunately, you are going to have to deal with 👺s and people giving you their opinions. And sometimes, they aren't exactly nice and/or nonjudgmental.

Your stroke was literally a blessing to save you from a brain bleed. I totally understand why everyone is wanting you to do plant based, but don’t forget all you learned about carnivore. Please read Toxic Superfoods by Sally K. Norton. A lot iof “healthy” plants are not our friend. Just find your happy medium, but animal fat is so important to our bodies. I’m 71 and struggled with IBS-D for years. I actually think I started researching carnivore after watching your story about your gut problems. Anyway, I’ve done low-fat for so many years and I think it’s the root of a lot of our problems. I tried vegetarian, juicing, every diet out there and things just got worse. Finally feel like my gut is healing with my “carnivorish” diet. I know sugar and carbs are my issue, but after I watched Sally Norton interviews on several of the Carnivores docs on UA-cam, I ordered the book and realized some of my gut issues might be oxalates. Also watch Fat Fiction movie. Really alarming.
I’m so excited to see your house renovation. I also prefer white woodwork. But I do live warm wood floors, so that about killed me when you said you weren’t keeping those.😜
    Your view is beautiful.
I have lived through one remodel and no fun, but of course worth it. Last fall we remodeled my mom’s little house. She passed away 3 years ago. I didn’t like the contractor much and getting him to finish up the details was a nightmare.
I also understand missing people when you retire. I retired at 53 and had all these plans, my house would stay perfectly organized and clean, I would workout daily and cook healthy foods. I would get to read as many books as I want….it is nice to stay up late and sleep late, but I missed being around people and having that purpose. You’re still young. Work as much as you want.

I don’t mind being retired. I worked in insurance. It became a grind sitting all day and even though I was an underwriter they had us processing policies and it was just sitting all day and you were so busy didn’t even have time to talk to anybody. I’m much happier now. I can go out and garden, go to the gym and work out, walk, my dog, meet new friends along the way.
Love seeing what you’re doing to your new home. Who cares what people think just be happy you recovered from your stroke and you’re doing well. All the best. 💕

I have been retired since 2016. I'm somewhat an introvert so not dealing with people is great for me. My husband retired at the same time. We moved from California to Oregon and, like you, actually bought a larger home, my dream house, surrounded by trees and wildlife. I couldn't be happier. I keep myself busy doing all the things I couldn't do while working, volunteering with animal shelters, crafting, reading and traveling. It's the best. 😊

Hi Beth. I retired from 40 years in a dental office and never looked back! I miss people (coworkers and patients) but not running by the clock all day. I retired in January of 2020 and had a couple of months of freedom before lockdown. After the scare of Covid was calmed, we began to go out more and saw our daughter and her husband a lot. Soon she was pregnant and we were helping get the nursery ready and having a baby shower and that kept us busy. I watched our little grandson for 16 months until they found a daycare (there are shortages of teachers in Maryland where they live). So I’ve had lots of time since September 2023 to do things I wanted to do (travel, activities with friends, etc.). The only time I felt lonely was during lockdown but I think many people did as well. It’s different for everyone to keep busy and be happy in retirement. I didn’t realize I enjoy time alone-I never had it before and it was nice and calming. I have a retired friend who doesn’t like to be alone and she creates a full schedule of activities each day. But she’s happy. It takes time to see how we fit in life when we are not working and our kids are grown. But you will get there. You will be so busy with your house (I think it’s great you moved and don’t worry what others think!) and your parents and mother-in-law (health and moving). Enjoy the journey! 😊

God bless you. I had a brain hemorrhage/aneurisma when I was 15 years oldand suffered total paralysis. It has impacted my entire life. Plus, I took care of my dad l, at home, for 12 years. In the end, he had pancreatic cancer. You are so fortunate to have your husband to lean on. I was alone. I am so grateful for everything in my life. No matter how bad things may seem, it can always be worse. Enjoy your new home. Hang in there with all the challenges of your remodel. Plus, the frustrations in moving your parents into their assisted living facility.

Beth, I was a 30 year divorced single Mom who got married, moved to a different city an hour away than retired a few years later. One of my biggest challenges was discarding my professional office attire and switching to a relaxed wardrobe. Both my husband & I went through our Mothers demise with Alzheimer’s & dementia. Going through their journeys got us into addressing our own aging process, dealing with our stuff and making sure our children understand our wishes. It’s very sad that here in the US caring for our elders is so expensive and that for most families the nice places are unaffordable.

Hi Beth! I’m also a Kansan! I grew up in Lawrence, went to KU, married and lived in Wellington, Ks for 14 years. My married son lives in Wichita, and I moved to Overland Park 22 years ago. My married daughter and her family also lives here.
I’m in Wichita fairly often, and have seen some of the lovely home areas with the small lakes- so pretty and relaxing!
I’m a decorator and designer, and still working part time, because, like you, I love it and it fulfills me.
I love the vision you have for your new home, and I applaud you for taking on this project!! My own grandmother built a new home at age 75!!
If it might work for you, maybe we could meet for coffee sometime when I’m in Wichita. My son lives on the west side, and he and his wife are remodeling a home they bought a year ago. So much work, right??
    Take good care!

As a vegan, I’m thrilled you’re on a WFPB diet. At 70, I’ve been on it for 7 years and feel great. I’m planning on retiring from my full time government job in a few months but will continue my part time caregiving job. I’ve been marking my calendar. I solely took care of my mother with Alzheimer's for 8.5 years before her death, so I understand the difficulties.

I hope and pray your good health continues...
My house is 3800 sq ft and you and I are the same age...I like it! Often times the larger houses is better for organizing in which makes cleaning easier to me...

I have not been through a home renovation and do not want to go through one. My sister who lives about 2 minutes from me has been going through a kitchen and laundry room renovation due to water damage. What a mess. No stove, no washer and dryer, no kitchen sink, and no dishwater. Her refrigerator is in her dining room. The renovation is now at 3 months. She occasionally uses my stove and washer and dryer. She is beyond stressed and ready for the renovation to be completed. I must say it will be beautiful when completed!

Funny story…We moved my then 95 yo mother-in-law into an independent living community too. During the pandemic, the residents were supposed to stay isolated in their apts. My father drove for meals on wheels after retirement. He also drove a church bus. I guess he and his wife had a lot going on with their church. I love to play music at home, study languages, and meet people online. I'm also redoing the house I just bought, and it's really fun. Thanks for the update on your house, and I also love how open that area is where you took down the wall. I look forward to more!

Good for you Beth! I've been retired for 18 months. I don't miss working at all. At my last job, I was by myself 90% of the time, and I loved it. I've gotten into various hobbies on a grander scale. I'm currently making soap for a homeless shelter in my town that now offers showers. I've volunteered various times over the years, so I'll be doing more of that. Along with the crafting, I'm fostering senior dogs until they find a forever home. Good luck on your health journey.

I retired and I’ve never missed it. I took on hobbies and interests that I didn’t have time for when I was working. Remodeled some parts of our home and purchased a summer cottage near a lake. Couldn’t be happier. Yes, we had situations with caring for parents, it is stressful. Love retirement tho!

Hi Beth, thank you for sharing. You are a strong woman. If you can afford the remodel and wanted to great! You and Alan have made a wonderful life together. I retired at 50 because my company was sold. I immediately enrolled in college and got my BFA in 2003. My husband worked at a steel company 32 years and the company was bought out by a Japanese company who then filed bankruptcy. He lost his retirement except for a small amount he gets from the government’s Pension Benefit Guaranty. We managed but not much money left after the living expenses. He had his savings in company stock and lost it all. 6 yrs. Ago he was diagnosed with vascular dementia. It has been heartbreaking to witness his health falling. We live on a small lake and it is beautiful to look out the huge windows at the beauty. I understand why you wanted to view a lake. I wish you good health and happiness. Thank you for sharing.

Oh, I hear you. Approximately 10 years ago, my parents also were in need of assistance. My husband and I moved my parents moved into assisted living for about two years. Later , we moved my parents into a skilled nursing facility. My mom had dementia and my dad had heart and lung disease. After a few months in the skilled nursing facility, I had chest discomfort. Went to the hospital and had a stent placed in my coronary artery. I then retired from nursing. Three months after that my brother died of cancer after many years of battling the disease. Then my mom died and one month later my dad died. I was overwhelmed. Sometimes we are stronger than we think. I really empathize with you, because I have been there. I’m now 71 and enjoying retirement, but I miss being around people. That was my life. Keep living your life and just take it a day at a time. You are so fortunate to be on top of your health, and found these issues in a timely manner. Good luck in the months ahead. Looking forward to seeing the house progress. Take good care of yourself.

The remodel is looking great! I retired a few years ago and I did not miss working, but I missed the camaraderie of my friends. My daughter birthed our second grandson in another state soon after, and I was blessed to be available to help her in those early days. My husband and I are currently designing a smaller home for a new build. Definitely one story with considerations for aging in place.

I m retired since February and I perfectly understand how you feel. It is the same for me. I terribly miss my colleagues and the social part of my work. My husband is not yet retired and he is judging me all the time. He is checking what I have done or not in the house, because he think that I have now plenty of time and criticizes me all the time. It is a nightmare for me, hopefully since now, I have a good health but I feel a little bit depressed. I live in Belgium we cannot say that the weather helps…Continue to do what you want without worrying about what people think it is your life after all.

I retired about 7 months ago. I was really ready. I am adjusting well and love not having to get out when the weather is bad. I am a homebody so I love staying home. Now I go into the city once a week so I see lots of people. I do miss some of my friends from work but I keep up with them thru mutual friends at Church. I hope you will adapt well to this phase of your life.

I retired about 4 years ago! At first I loved it-my time and my husband retired about a year before me and now we could do things together we haven’t had time between two children and jobs! Our kids are grown and on their own and now it’s just us! Being retired does take time to figure out your new adventure! So sorry to hear about some of your medical issues and hoping you are on the road to good health! Take care!!

You have been dealing with a lot at one time. I agree about missing work. I read somewhere that it’s ok to mourn the work life you had. I think that helped me realize that was what I was feeling. Retirement is an other chapter with changes and adjustments. I find I am much less stressed and enjoy my new routine. It has been 11 years since I retired. How fortunate that although scary, the stroke led to discovering these other issues that can be treated. Look forward to seeing your updated home. Sorry people feel the need to say cruel things to people on line like you. I can imagine that one bad comment has a way of getting to you.

It's going to be fun to see what you do with your new place. Last December, we sold our big house and downsized to a cottage we owned. We relocated from a 1883 4 bedroom with basement 2 story historical house to a small two bedroom with a cellar fixer upper 1900 Folk Victorian cottage. Talk about challenges, I have them. I pray a lot and pace myself as we tackle projects daily. We're doing the work ourselves. Last summer I had a hysterectomy due to uterine cancer. I am a thyroid cancer survivor as well. I enjoy your easy to listen to videos!

I can't believe all the things you have going on in your life right now. I'm sure that can be very stressful. I completely understand about missing the socialization of work. I had exactly the same feeling and that was probably the most difficult part of retirement for me. I'm a people person. People ask me if I wear less makeup now that I'm retired and in fact I don't. I possibly wear more since I have more time. Morning are so much more pleasant and relaxed now. Plus I love makeup, it's very fun and a great time to pamper myself. Please take care of yourself during this chaotic time.

You have to retire to something, not from something. I was forced to leave the workforce early due to spine surgery. Bought a camera and joined a club. I can’t hike or stand on my feet a lot, but I have a passion now and love it. There’s nothing like owning your own time.

Moved to Phoenix, AZ from Northern Virginia in 2016 when my husband retired so we could be near his mother who we had to put in memory care. We renovated and enlarged a house here. It takes longer than you think to get everything done to a house. Just came back from Virginia to visit my mother who is in a memory care place there. Its really hard when they are so far away but its not really feasible to move her. I am looking forward to watching your renovations. I must say that you looked really pretty today. I’m planning on retiring from my full time government job in a few months but will continue my part time caregiving job. I’ve been marking my calendar. My only worry is my net pension pay will be less than monthly income so I’m going to have to tighten my budget a bit.

Great update. Brought me up to speed about the aneurysm. You have lots on your plate. Zowie. I don't see anything wrong with wanting to put your own imprint on the new home. The previous owner had their style, and you have yours. You're lucky to have the financial means to make the changes a reality. We have the means, but my husband hates change. He loves small and cozy. I like big and airy. I never thought we'd be living in the same house after 50 years. But here we are. I've had to compromise because I'm happy when he's happy. Take care, and hope to see your next video soon.

Hi Beth, I am so sorry you are getting haters comments. I watch a few women I love on UA-cam and it seems that they all go through that at some time or another. Try not to take it personally. I am retired and I love it as soon as I retired I got a volunteer job as a docent at a historical home that was built in 1864. I love giving tours of it and meeting different people, as a matter of fact, I’ve just been chosen to be vice president of the volunteer organization. I’m very excited about that. Just yesterday I went with three girlfriends to the Getty museum. We went with a senior group with the city. I keep in touch with girlfriends and do lunches out with them. Retirement is the best job I ever had, it just doesn’t pay enough! Beth, your plate isn’t just full. It is overflowing. My heart goes out to you for all that’s going on in your life right now. Thank you so much for keeping us updated on. What’s going on with the new house. I really enjoy seeing it and hearing about it. Have a wonderful day!
