7:00 you did actually realize that there might be a reason for her nasal voice back in I think the first episode! Which of course was a while ago for you, even at that point, but for me it was just a day ago :D
Side note: My favorite Corey Dorris vocals have got to be Axe Man (from Nightmare Time), and his rendition of Showstopping Number (from Starkid Innit, their London show.) He only sings a little in this show, but his vocals as Mayor Lauter made me sit up in my seat. I was hitting replay 🙃
10:58 Not to ruin the magic of nice harmonies, but as a sound editor it sounds like anytime the ensemble is singing they are cutting to the non-live studio recording. The microphone quality is different, and the intonation is too perfect. It does sound very pretty tho!!
on the topic of lauren sounding auto-tuney! I do believe they claimed to mix live vocals with soundtrack for the youtube recording so some parts will be the recorded soundtrack but i think thats very rarely for actual main vocals and mostly for background music/vocals
i was in the stream but there were a couple things that i forgot to say! as has been mentioned in these comments, the next song closes act one and it truly goes out with a bang. i mentioned in an earlier npmd comment section about how much jon kills in this show, but the next song really displays it. i won't spoil, but one moment in the next song almost always makes me (and everyone else, really) feel really emotional. his voice is so so good and he has one of the most poignant moments in the entire show, which he completely delivers on. jon is just so so good as ritchie and some of the physical choreography is amazing too! now about this song! i love go go nighthawks, it's just such a fun little song and i think higher up on my ranking of npmd songs than most people. it's such a happy song for hatchetfield, so feeling a sense of incoming dread is super valid haha. the "N! IG! HT! AH AH! KSSS" part is so unbelievably fun to listen to (and learn the choreography, speaking from personal experience) the harmony on "and now i don't eat all by myself" and "and now i can pee all by myself" always gives me goosebumps, jeff blim was just so in his bag writing the music for this show. but in the words of corey dorris' bill woodward himself, "i hope you've got a warranty on that fan, because sooner or later the shit's gonna hit it". sorry for the long dump of a comment, but i'm so excited to see your thoughts on the rest of the show, act 2 has three of my favorite hatchetfield songs back to back to back!
Thanks for the reaction 😊 I am EXCITED for the next song. I wanna say 'it's definitive' because that's what it feels like, but I don't really know what I mean by that... It's just definitive okay. 😂
I'm really interested to see if you can catch which Starkid Member is playing the announcer saying "And now welcome on to the field tonight's opponents: The Clivesday Chemists". It was a fun surprise realizing it was that person😁

@@singwithAshley well we know from Black Friday that the Lords in Black have access to other parts of the world, at least in some universes. In the Black Friday timeline, they were meddling with DC and Moscow along with Hatchetfield, which is confirmed to be an island in Michigan. Maybe there's a universe where they've got their hands in Clivesdale too 👀
Ooh that's interesting that you said the cheer sounded almost like a ritual, because I've seen a theory that the light turning green when they all start hating on Clivesdale symbolizes Wiggly. A ritualistic vibe seems fitting if there is a Lord in Black somehow connected to this song.
ppl already mentioned trail to oregon and sk innit but i also love corey's song in how the grunch cribbed christmas 😄 i'd love to see your take on that show in general too! for reference, it's a tcb show and a sequel to solve-it squad, which is a scooby doo parody. they're both one act shows, but solve-it squad is a play (probably better for a stream at some point?) and htgcc is a musical ^^
I also don't like the part of this song with Corey and Curt just because I think (as somebody that knows nothing about music/singing) that they don't match well when singing together. Curt can hit the notes required here, but they're too high for Corey. Then they both have to try and match the other for the harmony but it doesn't really work out. Both have nice voices, just either not fit for this song or for working together, or something else I'm missing because as I said, I go by feel rather than knowledge lol.
@Ashley Kennedy I get the feeling that Corey's lower register option was more a character choice than a vocal choice. As you watch more Starkid and start seeing more of Corey, you'll realize that he, more often than not, will choose to degrade his vocals to maintain his character's voice when he has to choose one or the other. I don't particularly agree with that choice, but it's his to make. It could also be that, this being live, he was just struggling with the vocals on that particular day.
How much do/should character voices play into singing performances? Does it add another layer of challenge and should the performers be willing compromise certain techniques and pitch accuracy in favor of them? (in your opinion of course)
@@kyler133 definitely look at character by character basis! There is definitely a healthy way to do it and there are often forced times when using character voice. HOWEVER! Super helpful when learning to play with your voice! I would just suggest having a Vocal Coach listen to your voice as you play
Should never sacrifice vocal health or pitch! Unless you speak to speaking voice for some reason. dear Evan Hansen is a good example of switching between Voice and speaking sound for emotional purpose.

Just from a brief scroll through of the comment section i didn't see it posted but someone else might have, I wonder if they had Corey in this Particular scene as a football player not really even try to sing because of the Stereotype of Jocks commonly being kinda Dense and usually only talented at one thing, The only counter argument would be the other guy (Forgot his name) Belting, But commonly some football players do both but they are the "Weaker" Ones of the social ladder, Just like The one not played by corey was earlier in the musical.

I know it's not relevant to you as a Vocal Coach reacting, but I NEED to talk about Solomon Lauter! Specifically, his name. Like Steph, it spells S. Lauter, like "slaughter", but that's not what I'm focusing on. Starting off with his last name Lauter because I find it less exciting, but it comes from a German word, like some other names in the show, most notably Max Jägerman. However, it's actually not taken from present German (where "lauter" is an adjective meaning "louder"), but from an outdated meaning of "pure". So Lauter here probably means something like "sincere" or even "honorable". His first name however is where it gets interesting for me! Biblical names always pack a punch and can give many hints as to what the character may be like, or sometimes how they were/are expected to be. Solomon, for one, was a biblical king of the house of David, and revered for his wisdom. Wealthy, powerful and wise are some of the main words to describe him, as well as a dedicated follower of God. But it is said that his teacher forbid him from marrying foreign wives, so Solomon had him executed, using his power to get his will. The foreign wives he then proceeded to marry "turned his heart after other gods" that he built temples to. That and some other stuff leads to him getting punished by God in the end. Solomon is also part of many other stories, including A Thousand and One Nights, where he is actually the one that banishes the genie into a bottle and throws him in the sea! Through legends and texts he has become associated with magic (controlling demons and such), including Solomon's seal. It's a signet ring that has great importance in several religions and, from what I know, is the predecessor to the Star of David. There's some other artifact attributed to him as well, but I don't know anything about those. Thing is, Solomon is a biblical figure known to reign over others, a man of power and wisdom, who has mystical powers through and with artifacts, and who turned to "other gods" only to be punished for it in the end. I love when characters and given names with such OOMPH. Can you tell I'm a writer? haha Disclaimer: I'm no expert, I'm not even Christian anymore, but I did grow up reading the bible and am really into dissecting character names
@@marveludus ME TOO! I call that name personalities! I went through three different last names in my life and maybe it’s the thespian in me, but I feel it totally changed my personality a bit each time! My initial last name had me growing up shy, introverted, reserved and observant. When it changed at age 12 i was more rambunctious, outgoing, performer, competitor, and more passionate over all. Now I do want to point out that the new name change went hand in hand with my teenage years so one could argue that had something to do with it… and now with my married name, I am way down to Earth and knowledge has taken a higher priority in my life. One in particular (and I am only sharing this because I have changed my name since then) was Marie, and that one sure felt like it came with expectations - even though it probably really didn't, haha! It's so interesting how names are just like other words in that regard, changing over time and even being associated with different things in different places! I remember watching the show and being kinda stunned at Corey's performance because he's a way better singer than this usually, I'm not sure what happened
I don't know if many people will agree to this, but I think you would benefit watching the digital ticket version of Hachet Town and then continue watching this full version. Hachet Town sounded fully pre recorded in the full show posted by starkid and I feel like there really is no benefit of dissecting it when it's not really live. I might be wrong, but it sure sounded prerecorded. The reason you should still watch the full show version is there are easter eggs specifically for the youtube posted show. But I think you should watch that one for fun and have context for it after watching the performance people actually saw live becaue there are big differences. I'll post the link in the replies. Edit: It's the song after the next one.
The proshot cut still has live material in it. You can tell by the way Kim Whalen's voice sticks out near the end. It's worth her reacting to it to pick that apart and see the the Easter eggs they added.
13:22 to be fair, I don't like that point in the song either. I love Corey and he has some nice moments in other shows as well, but right here it's not great. When Curt sings, there's a lot of emphasis on the start of each word. Who Knew Football's A Team Game. Going into every new word with a lot of power. But Corey doesn't do that, everything flows into each other more, and it sounds especially weird with the instrumental. Because the music tells us exactly where the emphasis was supposed to be- and it's just not there. To me it sounds like he knows what to do (listen to how much the way he sings changes from the start to i.e. 15:15), but he doesn't know HOW to do it and is getting overwhelmed
So for Corey I think that he just had a bad moment in this song. He’s had better vocal moments by far, even in this musical. I feel like he does way better in “Hatchet Town”. This was my first StarKid Musical and I was so glad to hear “Hatchet Town” because it proved to me that Corey is actually a good singer (not saying perfect, but definitely good). jon definatly feels like he was added for how well he could act in the guy who doesnt like musicals because paul is a role the doesnt sing for 90% of the show but it is cool how well he can sing
@jimmz6 so proud of his growth!!
Oh, I do wanna mention this isn't the intro to Act 2, Act 1 will close after the next song is over.
I do feel like Cory has def had better vocals but I don't mind it here as much? Do really love the harmonies too and the swotched up lines
Typod, gah, Act 1 will close after the next song is over. Act 2's opening number is H.T., using first letters to avoid spoilers
I was hitting replay 🙃
oh yeaaah the next one is coming
i am actually so hyped 4 this ANDDDDD SO HYPED 4 U 2 HEAR/SEE THE NEXT SONG
@@zfrenchtoast did you see it!?!?! Released!!
10:58 Not to ruin the magic of nice harmonies, but as a sound editor it sounds like anytime the ensemble is singing they are cutting to the non-live studio recording. The microphone quality is different, and the intonation is too perfect. It does sound very pretty tho!!
@@Adam-dd9lo was also hearing that 😳🙈
Live this song! So fun and underrated
on the topic of lauren sounding auto-tuney!
Love the dump of a comment!!

I also thought not the character but the actor for max was under there and they were just using the mask as a way to hide his face since he is dead.
also i dont think its hating. corey's vocal tone just wasnt the right fit for this bright peppy song. he has some nice vocals in trail to oregon imo. can't wait for more reactions. the next song is particularly good and there are a couple more stand outs ahead (hatchet song and bbq song). :D
@@scifigeek14 eek everyone is so excited for the next one! I can’t wait to film!
I wonder with all this Clivesdale hate are they actually heroes that fought against Hatchetfield weirdness or maybe they're even worse villains.
OH do the Lords in Black mess with them too? dun dun duuuuuhhhnn
@@singwithAshley well we know from Black Friday that the Lords in Black have access to other parts of the world, at least in some universes. In the Black Friday timeline, they were meddling with DC and Moscow along with Hatchetfield, which is confirmed to be an island in Michigan. Maybe there's a universe where they've got their hands in Clivesdale too 👀
Hii Ashley, so excited for u to react to Hatchet Town!!!

GO NIGHTHAWKS
I also don't like the part of this song with Corey and Curt just because I think (as somebody that knows nothing about music/singing) that they don't match well when singing together. Curt can hit the notes required here, but they're too high for Corey. Then they both have to try and match the other for the harmony but it doesn't really work out. Both have nice voices, just either not fit for this song or for working together, or something else I'm missing because as I said, I go by feel rather than knowledge lol.
@Ashley Kennedy
I get the feeling that Corey's lower register option was more a character choice than a vocal choice.
@@ForeverDegenerate could be!

@@TiaMat99 ooooo glad to be back! I’ve missed you guys!
Can you tell I'm a writer? haha
Disclaimer: I'm no expert, I'm not even Christian anymore, but I did grow up reading the bible and am really into dissecting character names
MORAL OF MY STORY, I love the name personalities and especially in stories and for characters! It’s one of the things I teach when building a character profile in Acting! Writers totally look for names that mean something! LOVE THIS!
@@singwithAshley Name personalities is such a cool way to put it!! My last name never changed, but I grew up with three first names and there definitely was a difference in how I acted around people depending on which name they used. One in particular (and I am only sharing this because I have changed my name since then) was Marie, and that one sure felt like it came with expectations - even though it probably really didn't, haha!
It's so interesting how names are just like other words in that regard, changing over time and even being associated with different things in different places! See names that used to be youthful, where now we can only imagine older people being called them
I remember watching the show and being kinda stunned at Corey's performance because he's a way better singer than this usually, I'm not sure what happened
Digital Ticket: ua-cam.com/video/pD_CFc8aiQ8/v-deo.htmlsi=Bt710uFrHDsN1ibI
This is once again Noob Assumptions, I'm going only off my gut and ears and no actual technical knowledge
And obviously there are musicals and songs that are more for him.
First time catching Ashley Live
Happy to have you here! Enjoy!
Corey's vocals are better in the cast recording.
