Before you get your panties in a bunch thinking this isn't a repair video keep in mind that I show not only how to remove the front seats in this car but also provide tips should you need to replace the carpet or remove the dashboard. I also cover some of the detailing that I did in order to bring this VERY dirty ride up to a drivable condition. As I said in the video I was not paid to endorse any of the products used I actually went to my local 'big box' store and picked out things that I thought would be readily available to the average person. I hope you find the information useful.

I was gonna say the same thing. I bought my car last summer and I rented a Rug Doctor with the Hand Tool and all the needed chemicals for $40. That machine is incredible. I also removed the seats like Eric did, and I was able to remove all of the stains to make the interior look brand new. Keep in mind that carpets are beige and the car is 14 years old!

Hey Eric... You can buy vacuum attachments that have a rotary brush head that work on an ordinary vacuum cleaner... They work really well on pet hair:)

While cleaning the interior of my car one day I just happened to look up at my headliner, to my surprise it was beyond dingy looking. Headliners are fragile, extremely fragile, they're simply fabric glued to a thin layer of foam glued to a cardboard like backing.
I cleaned it by taking a DRY terrycloth towel and gently wiping the headliner. This actually worked and the accumulated road grime & dust just fell away without damaging the headliner itself. Good video Eric, keep 'em coming!

    Great video as usual. =)
A tip for seat belts is to use a high pressure washer. I had dirty, horrible smelling seat belts in my car and I quickly decided to do something about.
I pulled the drivers side seat belt out and hooked it to a heavy thing outside the car to keep it stretched out, then I shut the door. I begun scrubbing with water and dishing soap. I scrubbed, and scrubbed, and scrubbed. It looked alot better and I was happy with the result, confident that I had gotten the smell away (now bare in mind, I'm a heavy smoker and smokers has CRAP sense of smell).
The seatbelt dried up and the next time I used the car, the smell was still there! At this point I was like "Wtf am I going to do, replace the entire seat belt!?", but remembered that a high pressure washer might be effective. And boy, was it effective! I pulled the seat belt out again, closed the door and went at it, and the difference in colour was UNBELIEVABLE. The belt became light, almost silvery grey - not dark grey, almost light brown as it was before. After I washed it with the pressure washer, the smell was GONE. =)
So.... Don't waste your time trying to scrub it with large ammounts of water and soap. If the problem is smell-related, it just will not work. Use a high pressure washer right away.

***** before you toss your mats, soak them in totally awesome orange spray, or the totally awesome yellow spray, the power wash the crap out of them. There is videos on you tube that shows how well it works. I took out blood, dried on stains thats been there for years and coffee! I founds some mats at a salvage yard and did this, now they look brand new. Its all about the cleaner, my friend.

Paul Blakey Yea, but all those things you cleaned off don't smell foul. And I assume you know what happens when something smells foul and you mix a nice smell on top of it. It smells even more foul.
But what is that totally awesome orange spray you're talking about? I'd like to try it one day when I have a problem like this.

+Atrax R the stuff i mentioned to you also kills the smell most of the time on contact. awesome spray products have several types and all of them clean and kill the smells for good. especially pet stains. you can actually see it lifting the stain after you spray it. and the smell is also taken out. not masked. that stuff is the real deal. ive used it for years. research and look it up yourself....

Great job Eric! Just a tip though, at the end when you were using your screw driver and your rag to get in the vents. There is a way better (and cheap) tool. Take a 1 or 2 inch paint brush, then a regular toothbrush, and tape the handles together so there are bristles at both ends. Spray cleaner in vents and any hard to reach places, The tooth brush gets in between vents, the paint brush goes deeper and between cracks and small surfaces. I used to detail and this was our special tool. You can use it for cleaning surfaces and tiny crevices, then wash and dry the brushes, and then use shine products with them without missing a spec. A total secret weapon;).

HEy there eric! Stephen here from Wholesale Automotive; I got some tips for you. At my shop when restoring an older dirty vehicle what we do is remove and disassemble the seats. once apart take off the seat covers, NORMALLY they just clip or pop on. Once done just throw them in your washing machine and wash like they were jeans. THEY WILL COME OUT LIKE NEW! For dog/cat hair after you wash them throw them in the dryer on VERY LOW heat it will pull all of the lint and dust out!

Eric, if you can get one, a Bissell "Turbo Brush" works GREAT for pet hair because it's a small brush that you attach to the vacuum line and it spins really quick and tends to just rip the hair right up out of the carpet. I love it.

You can remove 99.9% of the dog hair... The trick is to use latex gloves. I was cleaning my car today from the damn dog hair and i tried before duct tape and vacuuming it but they removed like 30% of the dog hair rest was entangled in the carped and wouldn't come out no matter what!
I read that latex gloves work like magic! Desperate i gave it a try... and BOOM no dog hair at all! All you have to do is be patient and willing to get hair strands out of there and it's pretty easy as well you just rub it 2 3 times and the hair comes out and insta sucked into the vacuum! Also the dog odor was gone as well without even the need to use trees or other smelly things to mask the odor!

Oh man so gross! I personally would pressure wash it and wet-vac it out right away if it was warm out. I mean spray everything. I just got a minivan that was a restaurant delivery vehicle for cheap and thinking of doing this on video. It is so dirty that it is almost a must that I show this process. The other way is to use a five gallon bucket with some nice smelling laundry detergent, a sponge and a scrub brush. Soak little areas of the seats and the rugs, scrub then quickly wet-vac it. Not really something to do in the winter unless you have a shop like you do to dry it out. I leave the windows open a crack and it is dry within a usual warm day.

Hey Eric car guy dude. Great job on cleaning that crazy-looking car! A tip that I saw from a previous post is using latex to get the"hard-headed" dog hair out. I have to try that. My tip to get out any smell, especially pet and smoke, is vinegar and warm water at a 50/50 mix. After vacuuming and cleaning all surfaces of dust, hair, etc., spray that solution and wipe down for vinyl areas. Spray and scrub for any cloth areas. Roll up the windows and allow at least 24 hours of uninterruptedness (yes, I just made that word exist lol). After the 24 hours, roll the windows down and allow the car to air dry. Smell should be gone afterwards. (You can also use something like Bissel's Little Green Machine (I have one, it's awesome) to wet vac but it's optional). The vinegar is only about $2 a bottle and you have water at home so you can save money and do this as many times as needed. Rental companies use the vinegar trick after they charge smokers a $250 smoking smell fee. Thanks for reading and keep bringing us videos. We appreciate them! 👍

Very smart tips, several of which I have learned by bitter experience. "Might wanna turn off the dome light so you don't run the battery down." LOL I've been down DeadBattery Street for this reason before. You made a mighty big improvement in the appearance of that hoopty!
I use a super cheap product to clean carpets when they get stained like that. After vacuuming them, instead of the foaming stuff, just sprinkle Schweppe's Club Soda on the stains and then rub the area HARD with a terry cloth towel. Then get a dry terry cloth towel and blot it up as much as you can.
Club Soda removes stains. It also neutralizes smells. I buy like six bottles of it to do a car.

I have personally removed the seats and carpet from several vehicles. Once they are out of the car you can use a pressure washer (or coin op car wash) to power wash the seats. The results are amazing, especially on the seats. I have done this on power seats with no problems. Just make sure you let everything dry for 2-3 days before you try to re-install.

What you do is after sprinkling it on work it in with a brush or something and let it sit for 24 hours and then use a vacuum to vacuum it out. I find this to work well. Great video! :)

    Hi Eric,
another thing to try with the carpet stains which may also help remove more dog hair is to remove the carpets from the car and hit them with a pressure washer. Only recommended for the plastic backed molded type carpets.
You can grab some carpet shampoo/stain remover and dump that on the carpet first and then 'fire away' with your pressure washer.
*Side note - you'll know your pressure washer is too powerful/too close if the fibres start flowing down the drain with the dirty water

Eric, I am a painter and I use tape all the time to clean things like that. I use the yellow tape and instead of using it in a strip, I like to rap it around my hand. Using the thumb to hold one end of the tape with the sticky side facing out, wrap it around your knuckles then overlap the end by quarter inch and keep wrapping around your fingers. Then when you go to pick up hair and dirt use the whole back side of your fingers and pat it with a twisting motion. When the sticky side of the tape is saturated, you can slide the tape around on your hand to a new section

From my experience a moist latex or similar glove works great for removing hair from low pile fabrics. I imagine the dish washing gloves that are grippy would be great, never tried though. Just keep getting the glove moist and rub it in one direction, then you end up with a pile of it you can pick up. For high pile I used diluted laundry soap and a cheap dollar store scrub brush.Spray with cleaner, rough it up all directions with scrub brush, then try in push it all one direction. To finish repeat that with micro fiber. And toss the brush after as it will be caked with hair. Wont really get the stains a sport remover will be way better but sometimes you just work with what you have. Thanks for sharing your experience, always great to learn from others.

Use a ( grill brick ) and rub it in the direction of the material. waaay faster than duct tape, and I learned this technique by a professional detailer. As you rub use your vac to suck up the hair and particles. Works amazing and saves time.

Arm and Hammer Pet Fresh, with hair release, works great on home carpet and rugs to eliminate static build up that causes the hair to stick to the fibers. I'm willing to bet that it would work on most of the interior carpet in a car as well. Plus it leaves a nice fresh sent as well. Just lightly sprinkle this on the carpet and fabrics, rub it in, and then vacuum everything out. Not going to say it will remove everything, but it's certainly easier than a lint roller.

  • @BigBrotherIsTooBig
    @BigBrotherIsTooBig 11 років тому

Eric, on the duct tape method, and easier way to use it is to wrap it in a circle on your hand or fingers so it sticks to your self, you will only need to use one hand and can put much more pressure on the car, when it gets saturated, just rotate it to a new spot.
Also on the shop vac method, I use my shop vac with an old house vacuum attachment(s) on it. They are smaller so more suction is created, plus you can use the brush included with most house vacuums, really works well to get the hairs out.

If I could work on cars, I would have worked a trade out with a local detailer & let them do.
However, since I can't, a little more info.
My 90 lb retriever has been riding with me for several months &
it was finally time to pay the price.
Took it - the car, not the dog - to the car wash just started vacuuming.
Of course I didn't take the seats out - you are right, it would make it MUCH easier. And it WAS a big pain in the butt.
I spent an hour, looking much better but nowhere as good a job as yours.
One thing I did discover that may help others.
At the car wash vacuum the crevice tool works MUCH better for everything
    even seat surfaces,
    than the broader vacuum tip.
Use the crevice tip for everything & you'll save time.
    Thanks for the upload!

Oh my gosh thank you so much for the tips. I just bought a car that I swear was almost identical. Great tips. The only thing I think I will be doing it sprinkling baking soda inside after vacuuming and letting it sit for a bit then vacuuming again. That should help with the smell. I am also combating cigarettes too though.

One thing I have always done that works well with pet hair on the carpet is not to use the flat plastic shop vac attachment. The circular brush attachment moving in circles will work much better than the flat plastic ones. Another tip is you can use a pair of scissors to cut down the brush bristles and it will work more aggressively when scrubbing it into the carpet. If you dont have a shop vac those thicker yellow kitchen gloves work pretty decent just drag your hand along the carpet and it pulls hair with it

(Gotta get it road worthy though) It didn't have this much dog hair, only a little bit, but there was so much junk, garbage, and sticky residue everywhere.... Bleeeeh. You should have seen the little garbage can in the dash. On the bottom, there was some yellow sticky stuff... Think it was ice cream... It's super super clean now. Yes that thing in green bottle does very good job. I once cleaned the ceiling of the car and it did awesome job. The ceiling was like new. It also helps if previous owner smoked in car and ceiling is all brown.

I have found that running your floormats through your clothes washer works really well as laundry detergent is pretty aggressive. Just make sure they fit in the drum well because they can get shredded if they stick up during the spin cycle. I also use a bristle brush and a soap and water bucket along with the store bought carpet cleaning spray to make shorter work of the scrubbing steps.

OUTSTANDING INFORMATION-! You have put so much 'water back into the well' with these videos. If there's such a thing as 'Happy Car Karma' -- you got it, Eric The Car Guy .... you got it in spades, brudduh-!!

Very nice Eric. I like to go a similar route to what you did, but if trying to get ALL hair out, it's all about order of operations. First, vacuum. Then fabric cleaner of choice. Dry well. Then any kind of rubber (actually rubbing with latex gloves and re-vacuuming works well too). Finally, duct tape, and if you want to get the last of the hair, use Gorilla tape. Keep in mind that Gorilla tape is much more expensive though.

A 500 dollar 94 Explorer, meant to be a DD/beater, 5 days worth of vacuuming, shampooing, cleaning, compounding, polishing and waxing. I love my OCD lol. I agree with you wholeheartedly on just because it's a cheapo DD means it can look like shit. I wish I could show you the pictures, I got that beast as shiny as you'd expect a 94 Explorer to be with 136k miles on it and probably washed 5 times in it's life. Good videos my man.

Here's a few tips for the other people... A Hoover SteamVac with the hose attachment works great on car interiors. I usually wash the floor mats in the bathtub with liquid dish detergent. Dish detergent is good at removing grease. EricTheCarGuy, I've never thought of removing the seats to clean under them and that's a good idea.

Great job, BTW I used to own an afghan hound and my car got full of hair, what I did after vacuuming it, I rubbed the panels with a damp rag, it did not remove all the hair, but it rolled it into "hair cords or bunches" which could be vaccumed later, it sort of piled up the hair at the edges of the panels, But if I had sold you the car i would have taken it to a car wash first. good job on the cleaning.

Just throw the floor mats in the washing machine on the heavy duty/high soil setting with lots of detergent. As for the carpets and seats, we have a small carpet shampoo machine...a mini one called a spot-bot. It has a hand attachment and hose that works wonders on car upholstery and is light and easy to move around while you work.

As an auto detailer id say you did a great job! Even though this vid is 11 years old its entertaining and informative. If someone would like to get a bit more dog hair out a pumice stone or a rubber brush would be useful.

After watching LOTS of detailing videos from Ammonyc and Chemical Guys, I cringed when you were cleaning the interior with windex. I know it's most definitely not your forte, but you did a hell of a good job looking at the end result. Great tip on the pet hair too, it's what I watched this video for. Stay dirty.

For this car, I would recommend renting a machine called the bissell big green deep cleaning machine. You can rent this at your local hardware store, just check the bissell website to track down a retailer. This machine will take care of any deeply soiled stains and give the upholstery a really good deep cleaning.

Eric, a pair of washing up gloves (Marigold in the UK) work on removing dog hair, put them on and rub/stroke in one direction on the worse areas (using side of the hand or fingers) and get the vac in the other hand to hoover up the dog hair that becomes loose.

I have a Sears carpet shampooer that hooks to my shop vac,and it works well in cars.. Now you need to wet sand the headlights with 2000 and buff them out. If you want after that you can put some clear paint on them.

My Subies have the same strap in the back seat. There's a reason for them, as you can see, it flips the back seat up towards the front seats. This is so you can fold the back rests of the rear seats all the way down so they're completely flat extending the cargo area by quite a bit. This can be a very handy thing sometimes. My farther was a Subaru salesman for a number of years.

I am a detailer and I work at a Mazda Subaru delarship so I deal with this crap all the time and a little tip that may be of use...we use what is marketed as a "Pet Rock" it is basically like a lava rock a porus stone and you just swipe that across the carpet while vacuuming it does magic, also a corse toothbrush will remove the hair. The issue is the hair getting stuck inside the fibers of the carpet, these techniques will bring it out so you can sweep it up.

I have bought used cars and I am "on a budget" too, so I go get the following from the dollar store for car cleanups: Laundry detergent+powdered peroxide+hot water, apply with a scrub brush, tack up afterward with old bath towels which can be washed, dried and reused. Use the same solution on the carpets, but sprinkle baking soda on the damp rugs and scrub it in, it removes odors. The dollar store has cheap febreze stuff that works almost as good as real stuff.

Plastic trim pieces can be removed and pressure-washed. Carpet can be removed, run through the clothes washer and shampooed. Cloth seats can be Rug Doctored after some vacuuming, leather seats need to be cleaned and conditioned.

Great video. Latex gloves and a rent a Rug Doctor for less than $30.00 a day and get the chemical for about $15.00 and hot water will not only clean the carpet, but also take out the odors from it and leave a scent in its place. you can let it air dry for a day or run the heater at full blast and leave all the windows up and it will dry out faster with the hot water.

For the carpet i use bissel product the concentrated stuff mix with hot water ,it does make your life easy. I dump 2 can of lysol in the fan intake with the fan running full blast inside really does remove the stinky smell and will kill any mold going in it.

You probably know now since this is an old vid, but using a drill with a bristled brush of sorts does the trick. It doesn't get rid of it, but loosens it up so it can be vacuumed very easily.
