He's just happy to see Kayo's got a family and living a normal life. That's what he really wanted. Kayo and Hiromi, who were supposed to get murdered, were saved thanks to Satoru and get married, then name their child "Mirai", meaning the future. It means Satoru's sacrifice really did change their future and that's what Satoru would've been cared about.
+ In manga, Kayo almost fails to live a normal life, when Satoru falls in comma and gets so obsessed with him. Then Satoru's mother tells Kayo to live her life instead of giving it up, then moves to Chiba with Satoru, which is very far away from Hokkaido, without telling Kayo where they are going. Then Kayo goes to the tree, where Satoru brought her to, alone and decides to let Satoru go and take care of herself.
Waiting for Satoru for 15 years and throwing away the life given by Satoru, would be the 2nd worst scenario for him, because that's not he really wants.

Nah, saving kids does not result at saving mom. He could've just relived what happened and instead of saving a kid from a truck leave it to god and fate. Hence he won't have an accident and his mother would not come to his house to take care of him, hence the incident of his mother recognizing Yoshiru will not happen.

Idk everyone is so obsessed with them having to get back together. From the start Satorus goal was to save her not because he loved her, but because he wanted her to live and he wanted to change the future.
If Kayo wasted 15 years of her life crying and waiting for satoru to wake up it would be even more sad. Satoru never had DEEP romantic feelings for her. He was a 29 year old man in a 10 year olds body and he knew it. And dont forget, if there was romantic feelings, this would have been elementary school romance. And its the first classmate to show real concern for her wellbeing no less. Multiple things could have happened along the line to change the kind of person they are and their values making them incompatible once they reach their mid 20s.
Showing Kayo and the rest of his friends move on and do something with their lives showed that his sacrifice had actual meaning. They never forgot him, they never stoped caring for him, but life had to go on and they always remembered his impact on their lives
The only one i felt sad for at the end besides satoru ofc was Satorus mom because of how hard it must have been to care for him for 15 years in a coma. Seriously, best parent in anime ive ever seen

A lot of my friends who saw this were upset she ended up having a child with satoru’s best friend after all they been through but, but i cried seeing this because seeing her finally live long enough to bring a new person into the world meant that this was the ultimate vindication for all of satoru’s efforts, even if it was to be with his best friend.

He obviously liked her, he accidentally called her pretty during class, the fox scene when they went to look at the tree was wasted foreshadowing. The blushing, the hand holding. In my opinion it would've been way better if they just didn't portray them as a couple. If they were legitimately just friends. But with that writing it's obvious that the intentions were to have them be in love. To top it off the completely random relationship she had with Hiromi. None of that ending seems natural.

I know in that in the manga it makes more sense for him to love the girl from the beginning and that it fits in the idea of him giving up 15 years of his life for other poeple. That being said this moment almost ruined it for me. After all the dating, compliments and hand holding she married one of his friends. I would be way more satisfied if she waited for him to wake up and kept loving him, and it wouldn't be hard to change as it almost didn't mather that she was married so why not make her love him (even if it wouldn't be as realistic) . And it also bugs me that she marries his friend, she went to live with her grand mother and had to move away from the city, so how did she fall in love with this guy who she bareky sees. Anyway this was me ranting on about how much this moment sucks.

From a narrative perspective however, it definitely comes out of nowhere, and for that reason I can't help but be slightly irritated by it, even though I appreciate what the story is attempting to accomplish through it (maximizing Satoru's sacrifice by giving tangible examples of time moving on without him).

People in the comments defending her “he was in coma there's no telling if he would survive or not” that's where loyalty comes and she threw it away. There's a famous story about a how a dog in Japan waited for his master for 10 years and was considered the most loyal dog. If she really loved him she would have had hope but she didn't care and moved on. He knew there was no turning back, all he could do is just cry and accept her first love who he saved (she'll probably never know) is gone from his heart.
That’s not really the point I’d think. Satoru when out of his way to make sacrifices so she could live a life. Satoru wouldn’t want her to waste it on waiting for him while he’s in a coma. Those are 15 years that wouldn’t have existed for her in the main timeline. He’s more than grateful and happy to know that his efforts weren’t wasted and everyone was saved and got to live happy in the end.

Saying that Kayo “cheated” or “Betrayed” Satoru is disgusting. The dude did not save her because he had a crush on her, that’s just a selfish reason to save her cuz that would mean he wouldn’t have bothered to save the other kids then, he saved her because he genuinely wanted her to be safe. Just because Kayo was saved by him doesn’t mean she’s obligated to love him cuz that’s not how love works and if that were to be the case then it would just be a one sided relationship which is just even more sad. She was saved as a child with abusive parents, why the hell would a kid be thinking about romantic love and a so called “crush” when the people that were “supposed” to take care of her were hurting her.
Kayo needed someone to save her, she wasn’t looking for a lover she just needed someone to reach out and help her. The fact that you judged her for not having feelings for him when she was going through abuse, depression, and she’s literally a fucking victim and survivor of domestic abuse is really disgusting. Your twisting the narrative of her story and I’m not gonna sit and stay quiet. When you meet Kayo as an adult she talks about how she met someone and how she’s finally happy and you people go on to hate on her for that.
I hope you know Sataru’s first attempts to save Kayo failed because he was oblivious of what she really needed. STOP ROMANTICIZING HER STORY!!! She never even said that she liked him, and tbh I’m pretty sure Sataru only blushed because as an adult he barely ever talked to women except for his mother. You people shipping her with Sataru when her story wasn’t even about romantic love. Sataru’s goal was to save her from getting murdered and he did.
I’m happy to know that Sataru isn’t being a brat and making it all about him and is actually happy for Kayo instead of being a selfish prick who is mad that she finally found real happiness. The fact you shading Kayo for finding true happiness really says A LOT about your personality. Kayo will probably be always grateful for Sataru saving her life but that doesn’t mean she should fall in love for him (it isn’t a fucking Princess story) that’s not how actual abuse stories work, I’m glad the writers made sure to not romanticize her story and making it about Sataru all the time.

I completely agree with you. Although I’ll be honest, I’d always thought of what would happen if I was in a coma for that long. Especially knowing of the opportunities and time lost. I was more sad of the fact that he had nothing and I didn’t care about him being with Kayo when I watched it. Me personally, wouldn’t have been able to take it and would either be highly depressed or on suicide watch.

this scene left me speechless. i couldn't believe what was happening. sure kayo deserves to be happy but there's this desire deep inside me that *wanted* them to be together. it felt bad to even be hurt by this outcome. it's the only part of the ending that left a hole, otherwise it would've been the most satisfying ending for me.

To me that was clearly his love story although the Kayo moments were sweet I believe they would have been just friends even without the coma.

@@number1monk the mf was a social inept that's the first reason why in the original timeline his life was miserable, he had no friends and the few ones he had in school either were killed or he lost those companions over the years because of his own lack of social skills. To save Kayo (to zave HIS OWN MOM) he had to change that aka TRYING to actually be her friend ofc he would blush we are talking that's the first time ever he had a female friend or touched a girl's hand.
Maybe if that reaction was kept the whole relationship it could have meant he had feels for her but that didn't happen, the silly blush was there for like 2 episodes until he got more familiar with her, the point here is that a lot of people are mad for something that was never there and that the author never intended to make romantic either.
