My favorite air cooled diesel is got to be JLO. Period, it runs clean, quite and it’s super efficient and easy to maintain. It’s the cheweinie of air cooled 2 stroke diesels, the Deutz and Stihl are more like a boxer dog.
I see nothing strang about this awesome engine. It’s simple, powerful and it does not require all the complex BS like a Detroit, cat or Cummins valved 2 stroke. I dig the dry sump throw it in and burn it off design and no valves. It’s smoother and less annoying than a poppet valved deutz or hatz 2 stroke. The jlo 2 stroke diesel is not boring like my old fart OMC rotary sled motor!
Even with the separate oiler for the piston and rear main, I bet it's a VERY simple design! I wonder how long one of those would run in a generator application as long as the oil was kept up in it...any idea on RPM specs and all that? Such a cool little engine
exactly. No carburettor, no valvetrain, no sparkplugs, no magnetos and ignition coils. Instead of spark plug and carburettor you have the injection system, which is MUCH simplier and a lot more reliable. Its also very reliable since the oil is directly fed where you want, instead of mixing it with gas and having poor lubrication, like a regular 2 stroke
I was taking a small engine repair class, but it only made mention of a two cycle diesel engine. There was not an example of a this kind of engine. Then, we moved on to two and four cycle gas engines. I've been going a little nuts wondering about a small diesel 2 cycle engine. Wow!! Very cool. Can you imagine if they had a lot of these engines just lying around for easy access to test out. Then, someone comes along and says, hey lets using bio-diesel again like we did a hundred years. (I think in the early part of the last century they used potato oil to run diesel engines amongst other fuels.). This engine really gets my imagination going. Thank you. Awesome job troubleshooting and bringing this little beast back to life. If only you could experiment on it with bio-fuel. Personally, I would be a little nervous about damaging it. It's not like there is bunch of them lying around in the U.S. that we could goof around with...or is there?
Nice simple clean and effective. Not with all this crap detroit,EMD, cat and Cummins with all their complex oil injection crap with sump. The dry sump is less messy and eliminates costly complex components
Not much info out there on these engines, at least for us guys in the US. There is a little discussion about these on SmokStak.com. I have no idea what this engine was on, but a lot of them were on European garden tractors and I’ve seen a photo of one in a small boat.
Get a deutz air cooled diesel and cut ports into for a 2 stroke, make a billet aluminum domed head and crankcase reed valve. Deutz has long full skirt pistons and are buil like a Klotz anyways as the are a common poppet valve 2 stroke
Take a deutz air cooled and cut ports into it and use crankcase as air pump and you get the same thing. I have seen s newer faynmann 2 stroke diesel with external oil tank feed. It’s uniflow with exhaust valves and lean burn to emissions compliant
The oil sump is separate from the engine, i like that; if you cant find a JLO just grab a Deutz or hatz and do this:ua-cam.com/video/1xjz1wwaNeI/v-deo.html. Each 4 stroke has a potental 2 stroke that exist in the spirit world! The deutz have long pistons anyways and room to cut ports in the air cooled jugs. this could be done with a high powered pulsed co2 laser. hehe. High powered light used to make a 2 stroke!
My God what a nasty sounding engine lol you weren't kidding about sounding like its gonna scatter. Really neat old engine for sure, i keep my eyes peeled for anything old w/ a spark plug (or without... Lol) and ive never seen one of these before. Really cool that you could present it with all its tins and stuff too. Thanks man
That is a really neat little engine! I had a JLO gasoline 2 stroke vertical shaft engine many many years ago. But did not know the Diesels made it over to the US.
I have seen some newer strang 2 stroke diesel on army equipment. It’s got external oil tank but it’ looks like a uniflow with intake ports and exhaust valves, it requires sae 40 low ash oil only and it burns it off. It powered a steam cleaner
this could be as much as 12 to 15 hp typical for small tractor.. the size of the crank shaft and flywheel should give a clue.. might be labeled in DIN hp. hmm love the thing want to know what it weighs ?
Mechanical injection is almost as old as the internal combustion engine. Electric injection started popping up in the '60s. Not quite the mew technology
Nice to see another one of these, I have one of these engines the only difference being mine is electric start and also has a raised hand start, a lovely little engine
How much did it cost and where can i buy one, there are lots of deutz poppet valved 2 stroke as i have seen them ans some can come with seprate oil tanks like your JLO. My 8v92 silver detroit 2 stroke burns SAE 40W low ash. A Hatz or Deutz distributor sells these?
I understand German and so I would like to watch the video you mentioned of the similar diesel engine in which the guy speaks German. Could you post the link or something please?
Never mind. I searched ilo diesel motor and the German one came up. Also another one in which the engine is just running flat all through the video. Cool engine!
Very interesting engine. I'm constantly amazed by the variety of antique engines, tractors, etc. that you own. I have a request !!! I've seen your videos of the various Doodlebugs that you have shown so far. I know that you own more, so I was wondering if you could do a video showing some of your other Doodlebugs? I've got the bug, LOL........... Actually, I'm still trying to get my 1928 Ford Doodlebug running correctly. I'm getting close. But the Doodlebug videos that you've posted are so interesting, I would like to see what else you have hiding in the barn, LOL......
The only one I have left that actually runs is a Speedex FG made from Model A Ford parts. It hasn’t been out in 16 years. I also have a 1929 K20 Cletrac with a Brittain oilfield winch and a backfiller blade on it. The blade is raised and lowered with a hand winch. Probably been 15 years since that one was started. Time is hard to come by, but I’ll try to get those out and running again.
@@The-Junkologist Your Doodlebugs are so unique compaired to others I've seen, including mine. I went back and watched your doodlebug videos again last night. The New Era and the roller are really something. I like the REO as well. Thanks for the reply, hope to see the others some day.
IronClad292 I just checked out the videos of your doodlebug. You’re doing a fine job on it. The great thing about them is that no two are alike and you can pretty much do whatever you want when bringing them back to life. I forgot to mention one other doodlebug I have with a ‘28 Chevy engine and a Ford TT rear end. Also forgot I have one with a ‘32 Chevy engine. Both of these actually look like real tractors. I guess I have 7 real doodlebugs, not including the FG Speedex. Lol
Wow!! Thanks for watching my videos. They're kind of boring, I'm not very good at it, LOL....... 7 Doodlebugs!! That's amazing. Yep, would like to see the other ones as well. It's interesting that you come across so many vintage Chevy engines. I can't seem to find any in my neck of the woods. This weekend, over in Eastern Oregon, I saw a large homemade tractor/Doodlebug contraption made from a truck actually working out in a field. What was interesting is this ranch had modern enclosed large tractors working as well, but is was obvious that this homemade Doodlebug was purpose built to do something, what I don't know, LOL........
You keep reminding me of more doodlebugs I have that I seem to have forgotten about. Lol. Not sure if I’ve ever mentioned one I have made from a ‘26 Dodge Brothers. I also have a Cletrac W with an early automobile engine in it. It’s very rough and doesn’t run. Lastly, I have a homemade sprayer outfit that is setup like an earthmoving scraper. It articulates in the center for steering. The drive unit in the front is a shortened F20 Farmall with the front wheels removed. It’s connected by a pivoting gooseneck of sorts to an elevated Hardie wood tank sprayer. It is steered by applying brakes to the drive wheels of the F20 which cause it to swing right or left. Actually works pretty good. I had it running years ago. I should do a walk around video on it. It’s very unusual. Lol
Its got a nice high volume oil pump with external tanks. this should keep everything well lubed and the piston cooler, dry sump at its finest. I want to find a deutz single air cooled and try this:ua-cam.com/video/pz83bWDwbVY/v-deo.html, that a honda gx converted to 2 stroke. A deutz is a poppet valve 2 stroke and they are very commen, but its easy to cut ports in the ramovable air coold jugs to make it like the JLO. A small external oil pump and a separat oil tank can be attached like this one.And fill it with castor 927 maxima.
This is how god would design a 2 stroke diesel, no valves like all the complex 2 stroke diesels of today. BTW is half dry sump and half wet sump in the front lol!
I like this plain Jain crankcase scavenged 2 stroke diesel. I does not need all the oil injected sump crap of American 2 stroke Detroit diesels. The Jlo can be made much more Powerful with a rotary exhaust trapping valve and turbo. I dig the dry sump oil pump burn it off no bullshit oil pump it has. I’ll have to try it homade on something else, 8v92 on castor 927 maxima, hehe
I think some Deutz and Farymann are, they use exhaust valves though, But you can always make one, cut ports into a Hatz and seal off the crankcase, run seperate oil injection, use the valves as exhaust. Looks like a fun project like this volkswagen 1.9 TDI:ua-cam.com/video/kot9GYBeCJ8/v-deo.html
That is one of the best small diesels I have ever seen, the deutz poppet valve 2 stroke is not as smooth though. I have seen a faynmsn diesel with separate oil and fuel tank on an army equipment. It’s a newer strange 2 stroke uniflow with exhaust valves that powers a steam cleaner. The oil is pumped to the crank bushings and slung and burnt off with external pump like this jlo. I have yet to see it run though but looked at it last drill weekend
i dig the dry sump feed oiling it has. Its so much cleaner running than a splash oil prexix into the airbox from the sump detroit diesel. a Deutze diesel is a nice valves 2 stroke diesel and there is plenty of roon to cut ports into the jugs on a deutz if you want to make a ported 2 stroke oit of it. i love this JLO as it runs clean and sounds so much better than more old fart american OMC 528cc rotary. The OMC rotary is for old farts!
having a dry sump with oil injection .........one would expect clouds of smoke when running..........but its actually a pretty clean exhaust. Super cool engine, thanks for the upload!! Had they not cheaped out on a blower, and gone 2 cylinder it would be super sweet.

It's a loop-scavenged engine. Forced induction is by the downward-stroke of the piston like in a 2-stroke gas engine. Lubrication is by oil injection whereby the oil is injected directly into the engine intake.
Take a Hatz and pack in and seal off the crankcase, cut your desired port pattern, uniflow or loop with valves, pressure feed silkolene pro 2 sx or grape seed oil from walmart, run fuel injection at 1 to1 to fire every stroke and presto you just made a nice air cooled 2 stroke diesel, Deutz makes for a nice 2 stroke conversion also!
Awesome piece of history! I have seen hundreds and hundreds of JLO's in Motoski's and other snowmobiles. Think skiroule along. With Sachs engines. It's interesting to think about. OMC rotary wankle was another american engine i a few of these engines to tinker with, Polaris liberty, mercury were american, you can still buy akohler engine today on a lot of equipment, Detroit Doesel is another big american 2 stroke too big for a snowmobile though.
Great video. Nice walk around and you even started it up for us. Makes me wonder why anyone would give this video a thumbs down.
That would probably be a Greata or similar
this 2 stroke thing needs a turbo, its way more power than those worthless 4 joke pos we have here and more durable to

How much are thesed and where cqan i get one, the dl660
finally a nice real 2 stroke engine like god would design it, fuck this wet sump 4 stroke crap!
This is the Nicola Tesla of 2 stroke diesels, crankcase blown and simple
Total loss moil burn off thats what i like about it, half wet sum half dry sump, hehe
Great video Mike. That is a neat engine!
Thanks, Nigel!
i love that little diesel, so clean running an efficient. Its it how god's little 2 stroke diesel

I like this motor way better than any complex valved oil injected 2 stroke Detroit anyday
It looks like the front of a deutz engine
Deutz is a poppet valved 2 stroke, not sure, A deutz v8 makes for an awsome 2 stroke conversion project as ther is lots of room to cut any port pattern in each jug.
Must be that fan shroud/intake
Idling it sounds like an old Mercedes 300
I once heard a Mercedes diesel start in the cold, it sounded like a Detroit to me.
Hm nice never seen this before
How lubrication system works please give me reply
ഞാൻ സഖാവ് AA
I explained it in the video.
About the oil does it use two stroke oil or normal oil?
SAE 40w low as like detroit 2 stroke, i use it in my 8v92 but i cut in some xd-100 synthetic also.
Why does that fan not work.
Looks like the belt is spinning
What you see is actually a cover in front of the fan. The fan is spinning behind it.
How much? Whare can u get it from?¹
IDK is Deutz or Hatz a similar version, hell how about this volswagen 2 stroke:ua-cam.com/video/kot9GYBeCJ8/v-deo.html, If you cant find one you make one i guess.

Diesel should be built
Amazing
Just about all the old Hot Bulb or Semi Diesel 2 strokes, were crankcase scavenged, from the smallest to the largest. So it's not that unusual.
The Lanz Bulldog tractors are a good example of this kind of diesel or hot bulb/semi diesel. As are many early marine engines.
bad ass
One of the best small diesels out there
Where’s the supercharger or turbo? Two stroke diesels can’t function properly without forced induction
This video proves otherwise.
This one uses a sealed crankcase so the oiling is on a dry sump, oil get pushed to the journals, flings off and burns up.
It's a loop-scavenged engine. Forced induction is by the downward-stroke of the piston like in a 2-stroke gas engine. Lubrication is by oil injection whereby the oil is injected directly into the engine intake.
This is the HATZ configuruation.. still made.. I think this company made motorcycle engines ( not diesel).
I have a tiller with this engine, u can check my Chanel if you’re interested. The DL425 is a very very rare engine, even in Europe.
