It does look a lovely unit. Ive kinda grown a love hate with hornby past few years but then the produce a nice loco and i dislike them less.

I've been easy to not be phased by them, mainly as they just haven't been producing what I've been after. So no love lost.
However this has made me hopeful of more Multiple units to be released by them in the future

Great review - I’m waiting to take delivery of my 423 4-VEP in Southern livery! 👍

The most interesting thing I've found is that I know more people who ordered the Southern version than the SWT one!

@@EmperorsPath There are many SWT models, we both have Bachmann ones; but as far as I can see this is the ONLY Southern model on the market!

It's a great unit and I hope it sells well enough to encourage more multiple unit entries!

I remember riding these back in the day. Loved the slam doors. Still got some 1st class seat number badges somewhere that used to be above the seats. Great models, so detailed!!

The new Hornby VEP was a must-have item for me too! I had it on pre-order from Hattons for months, then they went phut. I placed another order with Kernow, and it came the next day. I went for the Southern one. I was interested to see the SWT version, and I am glad you are happy with your purchase, considering how much you had to spend! There are a couple of things to watch out for - the step to the guard's van door can get bent or even detached if you put the coach back in the packaging the wrong way around. Check that parts of the underframe detail have not fallen off after a running session. Regarding the old VEP, you can replace the power car wheels so that it is free running and tow the thing with a Class 73. Thanks for uploading.

Thanks for the kind words! I too have already suffered the guard step fiasco after filming! 😂

I bought one of these about 2 weeks ago…beautiful runners and I was very impressed. Fitted one of the HM7000 decoders into it.
Remember seeing these as a child in Southampton. Wish they’d do a class 442 as well.

      A 442 would be a beauty!

@@EmperorsPath it absolutely would….i really hope they decide to model them one day. That and the Swallow livery on the new tooled HST and I’ll be happy haha
It’d be nice if they also did these 423’s in NSE livery as well so I could run both of them at the same time…we’ll see I guess.

We had one come from ramsgate to chart leacon (ashford) in the summer of 1981 which had ploughed through a heard of cows... it was high summer and as cm&ee apprentices we were sent to clean the underside... Still remember the smell!

They look like very nice models, and a huge improvement on the old one! I have an original NSE one that is just an awful runner, so I'm hoping Hornby release these in a few more liveries! Thanks for the review, and superb layout too!

Ah thank you very much! I think there is talk of some other liveries coming out (including some old ones)

They should start using the new loco to tender connectors from their steam locos on multiple units. Those seem much easier to deal with.

    • @EmperorsPath
      @EmperorsPath  6 місяців тому

It's certainly an idea! I don't have any steamers with tenders so I'll have to take your word for it!

Hey there great review and a lovely unit. I used to drive them for real. Couple of points for you. The real thing had it's motors in the guards coach hence the nicely modelled resistances which were part of the speed control. So power bogie there is spot on, yeah both bogies were powered on the real thing. On the 4 CEP they did have motor bogies under the driving cab at each end. To make life easier when joining up and separating coaches, get yourself some Labelle 106 or other synthetic gear lube and using a cotton bud, rub around the pins and clips. Makes all the difference. Enjoy

Oh amazing! Thank you! As always you are my font of knowledge on multiple units! Thank you!
I'll bear that in mind for the labelle 106! Thank you

yes, I purchased the Bachmann NSE 3 car DMU, it was too nice to pass up, but those connectors, horrid and fragile, a great buy though
