    I now feel rather foolish after opening it to make this video.
    Join me as I tell the story and we have a look at the supplied locos.

    Hello Matt …. Dear oh dear! The trials of the collector. Yes we all get sucked in sometimes. But it is only a hobby and as you say not the end of the world.

      The main thing about filming these videos it does make me look and read more about the hobby, 10 years ago I don't think Id have thought about these kind of details. But the most important thing is brining back the memories. Thanks Kimball.

    Bachmann should introduce a budget range to compete with Hornby's Railroad range using older toolings such as their A4s.

      Irony is the new Class 45/46's Bachmann just announced are retooled 30 year old + models that I think Bachmann themselves aquired off someone else. They have budget locos, they just slap new electronics in it and call it a day and charge £250.

      The one good thing about Bachmann is the spares are pretty good my 20 year old delict electrics burnt out and I got a new board from them.

    These Bachmann A4's began life as Trix loco's from the 60's & Bachmann bought the moulds. They can't compare with Hornby's A4 even from 10years ago.

    Impulse buying can be a trap Matt.
    So Bachmann and Hornby do the same thing in deceptive sales. Sad really.
    Nice box though.
    Happy Modelling

    Difficult one ,you were definitely stitched up and they knew what the locos looked like when they sold them to you. Most people have had similar experiences ,but like you say it reminds you of good times

    Glad to see you enjoy the pack. But there is also one thing that you have not mentioned. Dwight D. Eisenhower A4 had a non-corridor tender.

    • @dustyshelfcollectables
      @dustyshelfcollectables  5 місяців тому

      I didn't know that, both models have corridor tender so there is another problem. Thanks for watching and letting me know.

    The seam running down the centre of the boiler may appear to be a casting line, but is actually authentic. The two sides of the casing were joined along the boiler top, to aid in removal, and every boiler-band also covers a cut line.

      Fair point, I guess its the perfect place for a moulding line when you look at it like that. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.

    My thoughts are you may have an even rarer couple of A4s. They are in the right livery for the last years of service in Britain. Yes, there seems to have been some cheating going with both locomotives looking the same. However, someone has already mentioned: Dwight D. Eisenhower A4 had a non-corridor tender. As your two engines both have the same tender 60008 is wrong. Unless you can find proof the engine was paired with a corridor tender at some time in the 50's. (which is possible)
    As a Trader/Collector, you will know that providence is essential. You may have been the only buyer of the twin set. After 10yrs and not being used (Odd) the condition should be perfect and they should most definitely be serviced. I would suggest servicing and using them at least once a year. Does this set have a higher value now than when you bought it? Again I would say they are very rare for many reasons. You have found enough about them to say with some certainty that they are representative models of the engines in the early 50's. If you can provide a receipt, proof of purchase and from where with the certificate. You may have a very valuable box set. The imperfections are of no importance in this case.

      That's really interesting, as I said in the video, I cannot find the Bachmann release number referenced anywhere so could be something special. It's not a set I will let go as there are memories connected to them. They do need a service and I really should have done that before running. Sadly no receipt though. Anyway thanks for watching and taking the time to share your thoughts.

    If I remember correctly this set was not even produced by Bachmann, they were done by some rip off merchant as remember reading comments online and on Facebook at the time they were being sold. All you have is basically Two re-numbered and named Bachmann A4's product number 31-960 plus fake certificate. Both loco's or worth about £100 each, only because they or still in mint condition but 60008 has the wrong tender.

    • @dustyshelfcollectables
      @dustyshelfcollectables  5 місяців тому

      Oh that sound interesting, well the certificate is defiantly issued by the NRM and I purchased it there so there is some pedigree but if it was on Facebook 10 years ago that could be an interesting search. Anyway thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.

    Thank you for the detailed video. it might be a long shot, but have you tried contacting Bachmann for more information ob the set? They may have some documentation or something on hand in their archives about the set and the logic behind some of their choices with it. I had a bit of luck doing something similar with a Marklin product a while ago (they ended up sending copies of the design notes and CAD plans)

    If you had seen DoC when it arrived at Shildon before it was restored it was in terrible condition. A large dint in the front and very neglected. I think it had a double chimney as well. DDE was also in poor condition. The nameplate painted in yellow, the rods were painted in silver.

    I can vouch for being daft enough to do a trade in around 2011 at a model railway shop in Norfolk (that I believe no longer exists btw). I was offered the part exchange for either a good green Hornby A4 that was newly released that year (cannot remember which one, but it was super detailed, might have been 60027 Merlin) or, take a preowned 4472 Flying Scotsman set with the ubiquitous apple green A3, two tenders & 3 grey/blue coaches (a 1970s era model set which would be perfect for my 1970s era layout I was planning).
    Thought I got a bargain when I decided to take the Scotty, as Id never seen this twin tender set before, where the water tender matches the coaches.
    So where was the problem?😮 The horror didn't hit me until I got home, found the coaches weren't exactly much more than those Triang trainset types and the Scotty locomotive? It was a wretched tender driven model that frankly couldn't pull very much & was something for youngsters!! I was so annoyed with myself, but the two blokes in the store never thought to give me any information on the set. Im quite sure I'd asked the "tender or loco drive" question & they assured me it was a loco driven model, just to get rid of it because they were probably fibbed to themselves....
    I hated it, but actually I lost all respect for them in that shop & stopped going, preferring to buy stuff from the Aylsham Bure Valley Railway modelshop. As I say, I think East Dereham doesn't have that hobby shop anymore & I just wish Id chosen the Hornby A4 which was around the same price. Hornby detailed A4s are so difficult to get at a nice price nowadays too

    I'm amazed that these companies treat their customers with such disrepect. It's a hobby which should be a long term interest, and their profits surely should come from the lifetime spend of a customer not the spend on a single purchase. These kind of tricks don't lead to loyal customers.

    I have just watched a review of the HST 125 first and last, but it did cross my mind. Is it just a way of getting read of stock. With the HST, probably not. These 2 at the end of the day, if you didn't want 2 identical locomotives, it's sadly your own fault. How was the 2 locomotives originally packaged would have been interesting.

      @dustyshelfcollectables I think maybe someone that weekend wanted to buy 3 sets depecting the 6 loco's in the moment, and maybe there was a bit of swoop the loco happening. It does seem odd with no picture box and 2 the same colour.
