James you have changed my life. You’re my hero. I have been watching Journey to the Microcosmos for a while, maybe three years. In all that time I wanted to get a microscope but I didn’t know what to get. My husband got me one for our 16th anniversary and it’s been the greatest gift of my life. I cannot tell you how many hours our whole family spends together, getting samples, and watching the footage. How hard we research organisms to find out what they are. I’ve spent the last three weeks trying to identify a prehistoric looking Tardigrade with what looks like tusks. We went hiking during a heatwave to collect samples, seriously. We climbed a waterfall together to find out what diatoms were up there. We explore together. We science together lol thank you so much. You’ve changed our lives, truly James and Hank. My four year old can tell you all about microbes and where to find them. It’s just amazing.
@@JamsGerms I think it was a Echiniscus testudo, again not sure. It took a long time to figure it out. It’s really hard to identify tardigrades! The little guy is so beautiful and unique. I found him on some lichen on an old oak tree in my Mom’s front yard. I thought about sending you the footage because I’d never seen one like that before. As it turns out the lichen and Moss on that tree are full of different tardigrades and a lot more. Thank you so much for replying. I am honored, truly! I’m so glad you saw my message. I had some happy tears when I saw you replied. Are you going to write another book soon? I’ll be first in line to pick it up. I’d love to read more of your research.

I'm loving this channel. It's fascinating and has me captivated. In college I signed up for microbiology... I got only 3 weeks into classes and had to go on bedrest for the remainder of my pregnancy. I had always planned to go back to college later, but having a special needs child, I chose to stay home to care for him myself. Seeing this channel helps fill my curiosity. Seeing someone progress and improve their skills is such a wonderful feeling. In the 15+ years I've been a citizen of the internet, I've seen digital artists start from humble beginnings, hone their craft, and develop into amazing masters. When I find established content creators I like, I often go back through their old work to properly appreciate how they've improved over time, and if they've changed anything about their style.

I'm so glad to finally get to hear James on here. Truly an unexpected origin story but I'm sure thankful for it. His microscope footage has given me a whole new appreciation for the microcosmos. When I was 12, I found out about microscopes. I started saving the $5 i got a week for school lunch and after about half a year of hungry afternoons (unbeknownst to my parents) I got a microscope from the second hand store which had a dozen old highschool microscopes. My parents stopped giving me school lunch money after they found out I wasn't using it for food, but it didn't matter cause I'd already won >:-) First thing I wanted to look at was live blood, but I was too scared to get a sample from myself lol. I instead looked at a dead spider, and was blown away by the tiny mites on its hairs. Bugs on bugs?? Bugs²!!! My mom later cut her finger on accident and the first thing i did was excitedly exclaim "GIVE ME YOUR BLOOD!!" I still have my old slides, and I look at all kinds of cool things in the lab I work in :-)
It's delightful to hear directly from James. It's hard to believe this channel has been around for so long; in my mind it's still "Hank's new project where he gets to channel his meditative side, and also how does Hank have time for yet another new project?"

I remember when I saw my first video from this channel nearly 2 years ago, and I think I watched at least another 10 in a row. At a certain age I think you become wise when you realise just how little you actually know about the universe, then you see one of these videos and become bewildered, and yet enlightened at just how much you will never know, but will never be short of exploration. It's not just microbes under a microscope slide on video, there's philosophy, art, meditation, engagement, humour and of course science. Thank you James, Hank and other contributors for these truly wonderful films ☮❤
On topic, I got my first microscope when I was 9, in 1989. It was £50 which was not cheap back then, and it had a rotational block of 3 differing zoom levels. Of course the first thing I did was go straight to the highest zoom and try to focus the glass slide, until I heard the cracking noise of the lens as I crushed it onto the slide 😂😭 It also had an ability to take film photos with an attachment, but absolutely no instructions on how to take an image! Never did figure it out and didn't really ever get back into it from those failures. If I had these videos back then, maybe I would have persisted to be a microbiologist by now....
You guys are my favorite UA-cam channel for sure. Such amazing videos and great views and perspectives of the world we live with every day but usually never get to see.

I first found this channel because I wanted to learn more about gastrotrichs and so I did a search and found that this channel had a great vid about them. That's usually how I find good science channels, by doing a search for something that I am wondering about. I was surprised when I found out that Hank does the narration because he sounds so chill compared to when he did crash course. Thanks again for everything.

As someone that has become a collaborator with a PhD student I can say this as advice: keep sharing what you find is interesting with academics. It might take days, weeks, months, but eventually you’ll find someone that you can ‘vibe’ with and share your expertise.
James, You❤ inspired me to buy a microscope after I found my 60 year old microscope in a closet with its focus machinery literally worn out. I had loved it as a child, but had forgotten the sense of wonder and awe looking at ciliates brings. There is nothing on TV that can compete with the visual and intellectual excitement contained in a few jam jars of pond water! Thank you. Your book is a work of art!
I hope that this channel allows you receive the funds to do independent research. I'm doubting that studying microscopic life is a goal at many universities, simply because it hasn't been researched enough. I got a microscope on my birthday last year - and only got to set it up for the first time two days ago. Since then, my dad and I went out to get water from nearby to check it out - and it was love at first sight for me, too! It's so amazing. It's like peering into another world. I don't have a very close-up professional microscope, but it's still so amazing to see everything.

Do microbes behave differently when in the flatness of a slide compared to their natural habitat? Seeing as microscopes and their limitation of field of focus due to the nature of a lens (hence the need for slides to reduce the field of focus), it means changing part of the world that these creatures live in. I've always been curious about this notion
Much of the magic occurs when you 1st realize it's down to light moving into Mk. 1 eyeballs. Whether it's a microscope or telescope, no one can fake what you are seeing, and suddenly the universe becomes very real.
How do u identify which microbe is which one ? I mean if you take sample from a puddle , you will get a lot of amoeba and microbes. So how would uk which one is which one ?
It would be cool if we found a microbe that can communicate by responding to taps or blinking lights. Maybe it wiggles it's tale in a pattern and we go "eureka, it's way smarter than we thought!"
Nice i got into microscopes when i was very young i asked for microscopes for xmas and my birth day but i only got crappy toy microscopes. i had a really strange one with a black and white crt screen instead of a normal view finder .it was from the late 90s or the year 2000 why was it still black and white? and wouldn't a normal microscope be cheaper anyway? it had 40X zoom could be worse.
Ugghhhhh I want a microscope so bad but electricity SUMMER RATES. Had to postpone buying it like over a month now. New goal is buying it before October lol
