LAND ROVER SMART KEY NOT FOUND NO START DIAGNOSIS

- So I had this 2011 Land Rover Range Rover Sport towed into my shop. The vehicle was a no crank / no start and had a message "smart key not found refer to handbook" on the instrument cluster. So I decided to share my journey with you of troubleshooting the cause of this problem. I think you may find this interesting and useful especially because this involves diagnosis of the can bus communication system.

Well diagnosed. Lots of bizarre issues to be had on can bus vehicles. Scoping out the can high/low lines a must. Well done on getting to the bottom of this tricky issue.
A very very useful video! You worked hard to find that obscure fault. Well done and thanks for posting this video.
Great diagnosis, Im glued to your channel. 👍
Wish I could give you 100 thumbs up.. I had this issue in the discovery 4 (driving me mad) but the 1 minute fuse replacement worked for me. 😃🙌🏾 Thank you for the video..
Great troubleshooting! Even though some say you pulled the wrong fuse you fixed the cause not the symptoms. Any customer would love it if they didn't have to come back for the same issue! Word of mouth is crucial and I bet you got lauded on this. You got my thumbs up!!
Hi
Dude thank you so much I had a similar issue after I washed my vehicle (2011 RRS HSE Lux edition). Took apart the back panel like you did, unplugged the "black box", didn't see any water or corrosion but once I plugged it back in everything worked fine! Also, my key fob is old and busted which is why I first assumed it was a key fob issue... It was not. This solved my problem thank you again!
I have an LR4 with a failing battery which AAA seem unable to diagnose correctly. As a result the voltage lines to all the electronics are affected when trying to crank the engine. This glitched the smart key system causing it to hang, and not being able to start the vehicle at all. This solved the smart key read problem. I guess it's a hard reboot to the system in removing the fuse and reconnecting it again. This video saved towing and paying through all orifices to a Land Rover dealership. Thanks and good work!
Great video and documentation. Keep them coming!
Thank you!
@@ADVANCEDLEVELAUTO do you are a badass to find that module like that
I am in awe of your skills and persistence...
Great video and excellent diagnosis, sir. Look forward to fresh content! Take care!
Bro saved me a lot of money thank u for the tips..unplugging the battery for 30 min did the job for me..
That was great GOT THIS PROBLEM A FEW MINUTES AGO. I was able to resolve the issue in 10 minutes Thanks bro
Awesome diagnosis, this is next level!!!
Awesome video man it looks like it’s coming in through the roof drains that’s typical for those and Cadillacs
Great detective work! Congratulations. I wish I had someone like you over in Switzerland…
Another fantastic video from you guys, I am really enjoying it.
Excellent diagnosis and repair.
Absolutely spot on diagnosis. Great find, goes to show that when bundling the systems together and they all relies on a good line of communication that any disturbance can rear it's ugly head as a no start.
Exactly!
Could I have advanced level auto phone number please
Very good and useful to learn new things every time.
Thanks
Interesting video, a good one to keep in mind. As others have already said though, you pulled the wrong fuse which could have completely messed with your direction of diagnosis, but luckily it had nothing to do with that land rover bulletin you found anyway.
Man this is a good 1 brother.. please keep your videos this long makes me think as I’m watching
Thank you!
Wow. What a find! I c u broke out the old Maxi Das. Still a very capable tool. I like how u went to the com lines. I learned a lot in this one. For me, never work on a Range River, I mean Rover.
Thanks for watching!
Brilliant Work,,Very Impressive 👍
excellent demonstration and video; cool to see the problems can be found...most times :)
Good thinking Eric 👍👍
Nice diag & fix
Excellent work man! Extremely impressed by your video! Thank you for your time! Question, What would you say an estimate of the cost of repair would be? I understand you did not fix the leak, but an estimate of everything would be great! thank You!!
Thank you for sharing this knowledge.
6 1/2 Hrs later "things went from 0 to 100 real quick" dash stripped down😳😳 it sure did! From fuse and battery to inside the dash. Another great vid! Key em coming.🤘🤘
Thank you for this. We were stranded at the mall until we saw this video ❤️❤️❤️
Awesome! I’m glad this helped you!
Thanks!
Stuck in a parking lot watched your video and was able to drive home

You are the BEST! good work Bro!
Excellent find
You make everything look so simple
One of the few you tube😀 videos that actually kept to the point and followed through to a conclusion. 10/10 Great explanation. Thank you. Just curious, was your parking module installed upside down? Mine was and was full of water.
fantastic post,, thanks a million, worked like a charm. and made my day..
Awesome insights !
Too good a diagnosis Man,,,,,, very helpfull indeed ! My vehicle is in same condition right now . Let me check it out if it works or not .

looks as if the CAN bus can wreak havoc with our 'newer' vehicles...thanks for your insights !!!
That was great diagnosis 👍👍
Nice diagnosis!👍.
Excellent diag.Range Rover has a history of many issues. Nice looking car but mucho problems!!
Lots of work to find the problem. But you might have gotten lucky.
You pulled F5, not F17 (freeze frame the fuse layout). 'IF" pulling F17 "might" have generated a logical reset in the system, it may have started fine giving you a false fix.
Then, if you found no further problems at the time you might have delivered back to the customer, only to have the problem show up when it got wet again, leaving you with a come-back or worse (a bad reputation if they decided to take it elsewhere). It happens to a lot of us.
Well done video. Thanks for sharing.
P.S. I wonder if the KVM problem that's being investigated might be the caused by this same issue of water getting in the Parking Aid Module. It 'would be intermittent', and changing the KVM wouldn't fix the problem. 🤔
You might be correct. It can be difficult sometimes when I’m trying to film and work at the same time, so I wouldn’t be surprised if I pulled the wrong fuse. I’ll have to go back and check the fuse layout on the video. Thanks for the heads up!
Doubt it would have provided a false fix. The can bus signal was completely messed up. Other than the wrong fuse identification, this ended up the right way and in this situation i don't think pulling the correct fuse would have changed the path taken.
Very impressive fault finding skills! Great work.
I really liked your explanation very good job
Thanks buddy. That was useful for me👍
Awesome! Thank you!
You are real good, thanks so much, I appreciate you more
Your fuse 17 trick solved our ‘no start’ issue while 120 miles from home. Thank you (2013 RRS). Shame on ‘Engineering’!!
Thank you so much for this video helped a lot
Apart from pulling the wrong fuse at the beginning - a great video.
Great find, excellent
Very informative. Appreciate
That was my exact issue!!!!! Thank you so so much
It was an excellent fine. Thank you for sharing that with us.
You are awesome I'm New in the channel tank you for that

Very good work bro thanks for the information wow
saludos desde Republica Dominicana . muy buen video no entiendo ingles pero por los puntos a los que fuiste ,creo ya resolveria ese caso de una vez
Can't believe you guys can actually criticize this gentleman's effort to help thousands of people for free. You go to the dealer with this and it will cost $2500 to $5000 by the time they are done, trust me I know first hand. Wish I had seen this before. This video is amazing and all I can say is wow. EXCELLENT WORK SIR. And by the way, that corrosion will shut everything down eventually. Dealer tried to clean it up for me and still will not work. Its obvious water and electronics don't mix well. I had all the same symptoms with the radio, navigation and dashboard going out after the rain. It was caused by the Phillips Auto Glass after they changed my windshield. Had the dealer replace it since the car was already there.
It's called doing your job...Utube makes it look easy....you can edit out all the time looking for causes
Great work.
Land Rover. One of the worst makes to work on. Great find! Heck of a job!
I agree! Thank you!!!
Dude ur badass!!👌👌
Watching you from south los angeles, God bless you
Awesome information thank u
great job,well done. thanks
Thank you!
Well done man. I got to ask, how and where did you get the how the correct waveform should look like?
Hey Eric nice diag. I tip. Sometimes, not every you can pull fuses that power modules your trying eliminate. That way you dont have to tear everything apart. Ive been very successful doing that many times.
Quality product!
I was literally gonna give you the same answer you got... I’m glad I forwarded it to the end lol ps they all leak cover the modules with plastic and you’ll save the customer money since the amp and other modules are down there
Well done 🇬🇧👍
Another thing is why would people give videos like this a thumbs down.. your given out free knowledge ... just my opinion 🤷 😌
It's a macho thing
Only ever lease a Land Rover product id never own another outside of manufacture Great content my man 👍
Desgaree mines been good to me
Nice tracing and problem solving
Obviously some things never change. I have the 2014 Range Rover Sport and it has got a rear quarter glass or liftgate seal leak, which has run down inside and taken out the Differential Control Module. Great design and engineering foresight caused the factory to mount the module upside down, which then makes the pressed metal cover form a cup just perfect for rainwater collection. Still waiting for the new part to get here after the attempted shafting by the local RR importer.
Nice find!
i know this video is old, not trying to add any negative energy. just wanted to point out you pulled F5 fuse instead of F17. however, I do appreciate the follow thru with the rest of the diagnosing its helping me find my tail with my customers LR4
Proper mechanic, doing proper problem solving !! 👍
You find F17 and pull out F5. Great to see you find the fault though.
well done from zimbabwe
Thank you!
Good video good teacher
Nice work
Hi, thanks for your video I watched it and was very interesting, although it never help me as I’ve lost my keys and car is dead locked ( no spare 😭), I have liked and subscribed now going to watch your other stuff, happy new year anyway 🎉 from Edinburgh Scotland 🍻🏴
The price you pay for features you really don't need.
good shit , A smart mechanic not a parts changer. test dont guess. excellent job!
very smart diagnosis.
Amazing good job.
There is a back up slot for the smart key under dash for emergency start from the dead fob battery.
Great job
Thank you for watching!
Right-On Brother, Good 👍 Information To Keep In My Hat.
can you show how the wave form changed when disconnected or do you have a video that shows that process great work
Exelent video mate, you saved my life lol
