I find myself wondering what path Yamaha would have taken if they would have stuck with two-stroke technology.

I don't think it matters what they did. They would have always led to a path that priced themselves out of market. It wasn't the product's fault. There was simply no demand at the price they were asking. I always had Yamaha. The last one I bought was 2006, and they were always priced within a range that made them competitive in the market. When I looked to replace my sled again in 2022 I was sure I was going to pick Yamaha. At that point, they were priced way out to lunch. Around 5k more than the competition from Polaris and Ski-doo. At least in Canada anyway. The thing was, I was at a point financially where a sled could have cost anything and I would have bought it. But you don't stay wealthy by needlessly wasting it where it's totally unjustified. I bought and own my very first Ski-doo. It's sad that Yamaha marketing team sank the ship. I find their product to be only slightly superior these days since the competition mostly caught up, and it just wasn't 5 grand more superior anymore. Not even close.

Don't forget service and customer service amongst dealers and their shoddy practices of late. I'm also from Canada and I think most folks dont realize what's happening in the world economy. That said, Yamaha is offering a 2.99% finance rate plus an additional .50 if your a existing owner. Wont see nothing but 8.99% - 11.99% with the others who use the big banks. @@shperax

From a trail rider perspective the 999 turbo in the sidewindet/thundercat is absolutely awesome. Power steering changed how the heavy front end feels as well. My tcat is a joy on trails and it has some serious ponies on tap.

The first sled I bought as an adult was a 1988 Exciter, and I loved that sled. I finally got rid of it 2 years ago. My daughter and I have been searching for some older Mountain Max 700s or SRX Mountains. They made the best triple 2 stroke out there. They should have kept that going while introducing their 4 strokes. The all or nothing approach rarely works. Cat is learning that with the Alpha. I agree that if the would have made the new YamaCat Mountain Max a twin rail, they could have potentially made a go of it.

Smart business move. CAT has put the 7000 back in their line up. Yamaha will make the engines and make more money there than selling a complete sled. I have two 7000's for trail riding. I also have a two stroke doo which is much lighter but I prefer my 7000 sno pro. There is a good market for 4 stroke so best to have CAT make them. Polaris believes there is a market obviously since they re-launched their own four stroke technology. Also consider that seasons seem to be screwy over the last number of years - I wonder if the market is shrinking?

Yamaha was one of those companies that benefited from everyone else making unreliable sleds, they came in and made sure their sleds held up, and they were allways at the top when it came to reliability
but now we don't really have those kinda problems with sleds anymore (except maybe if you ride a polaris) so their advantage just slowly got smaller and smaller and for all the praise they should get for making snowmobiles actually hold up they should also be held to the same standards as everyone else in all the other departments, and what became clear in the late 2000s was that yamaha just couldn't make a chassis good enough to compete with everyone else
I love yamaha, definitelly still looking to buy a sidewinder when the prices go down, but i can't say i didn't see this coming, although i had actually bet that arctic cat was gonna pull out first but, oh well, yamaha's are just arctic cats anyways

They have priced themselves out of the market for years now. When Yamaha came to the market with a 4 stroke snowmobile, they covered a niche in the market worthy of a bigger price tag. You could now sled your way past 30,000 km with no engine teardowns for top or bottom ends like on 2 strokes. They are extremely dependable compared to 2 stokes and were the perfect trail sleds for those that put on heavy miles. These days, everyone has a 4 stroke sled. They are not special anymore, yet Yamaha keeps their insane high prices despite heavy competition. 2024's are no different. The cheapest adult sled they sell is 21k and go up to 27k before tax. No wonder they are giving up.

I believe this sport has gotten commercialized by yuppies and those that can afford the average 15 thousand dollar sled. After the dealers screw you on fees like assembly. all they do is put the skis on and raise the handle bars. shouldnt cost 3 to 5 hundred bucks to do that. I have been riding for over 25 years. I do wish yamaha still made their 2 strokes but you cant blame them for perfecting the 4 stroke in sleds. And at the time it was about fuel efficiency and reliability so when they came out with the 4 stroke motor in their sleds it was a time when government was all about emissions. These days with how covid got people to buy anything in the outdoor industry because they couldnt go socialize in public you have all of these novice riders that think they are the only ones on the trail when im sure i got more miles pulling my sled off the trailer than they have going forwards on the trail. Back when reverse on a sled was an extra add on if you wanted to pay for it. Sleds with less than 10 inches of travel. And sleds that didnt have GPS electronical BS and the common guy could work on. back when you had to pull a sled over instead of electric start. If you cant pull a sled over now a days then you shouldnt be riding one. Snowmobiles are getting like cars now a days where you have to take them to the dealer to get worked on because its all computerized junk. Lets mix more electrical with snow that melts to water. thats real intelligent... Not! Spark plugs costing 40 to 60 dollars when they used to cost 4 or 6 dollars. parts in general costing too much. Its unreal. And to be honest i own a Yamaha grizzly atv and by far it is the best atv on the trails. You will never beat Yamaha's reliability. From home goods to musical instruments to the outdoor industry, I would back yamaha any day. If they made a vehicle I would buy it. So sad to hear that they are getting out of the sled market. Watching nathan titus, carl schubitzki and chris vincent dominate with Yamaha in the late 90's was great racing too. Going to miss seeing blue on the trails. You know what Yamaha stands for... You And Me Are Haulin Ass! Ride safe everyone!

why would anyone by a yamaha sled now a days when they can just go buy a Cat. Yamaha used to be about reliability and being the Cadillac of the trail, once Cat took over building their chassis, that was thrown to the wind. no way are yamascraps dependable anymore, theyre just bloated trail sleds with a shit rear skid and crappy skis, if you want a turbo trail sled, just go buy a Doo, you'll be happier with it in every way
