In today's video we were back at the awesome Bonners Music in Eastbourne to check out some of the new Fender Vintera Strats and the Fender American Original Strats.
They are both 50's spec, both with maple boards, but the Vintera is made in Mexico and the American Original is made in America and costs almost double the price of the Vintera, so it was interesting to see and hear the differences!
We plugged both the Vintera 50's Stratocaster and the Fender American Original 50's Stratocaster straight into a Fender Blues Junior. We used no pedals in this video. All of the gain came from the amp with an SM57 in front of it to try and make it as fair as possible.
Check out the guitars used in this video at Bonners Music -

hey guys, did the guitars fell much different? how were the necks in comparision ?
@@pablocaldeira1802 the neck profiles are both "soft V's" they felt very similar :)
After all these tests: which is the best Strat under 2000 Euro in terms of sound and playability? Your opinion, please
@@musikus7092 that's a hard question! It's Danny here, I personally think the sound of the Vintera pickups (not modified) is my favourite sounding Strat. I think the Vintera Modified is the nicest to play but I'm not keen on the hot pickups personally. It would be between the Vintera or American Original for me, if I was investing in a guitar to have forever I'd go for the American Original as it has the nitro finish. If I was looking for a great gigging guitar for the next few years I'd go Vintera but that's just my opinion! :)
@@TheLickLoft thanks for your answer👍
Brilliant dem. No waffle, no egos, just real life comparisons, and honest opinions at the end. Well done.
Thank you! That means alot to us!
wow fantastic playing and demos and comments. Much appreciated. For a player of my ability I would be happy with either. For the price both stunning guitars. thanks.
Thanks Steven that's really cool of you to say that. Glad we could be of use :)
Awesome review guys, thank you!
Glad you liked it Nick! Thanks for watching
@@TheLickLoft This Soft V neck with the 7.25" radius has me won...Had no clue what to expect when I tried it out first, then everything just seemed to fall into place. Now I'm just basically counting the days till I get a Vintera '50s.
I'd bet a cup of quality coffee that many of these opinions in the comments would be different if they couldn't see which guitar was which. The Vintera is noticeably more articulate in the cleans, and has more of that snappy treble that I associate with a 50s strat tone, but I think everyone here is getting drawn into the allure of premium price and huffing nitro lacquer fumes. ;) In every video with a more expensive guitar vs. a cheaper one, the comments home in on whatever is different about the more expensive one, and then assign that as the superior trait, whether it's 'warmth' (low-mids), or 'clarity' (treble) which are often competing traits...
Yeah I agree especially over UA-cam it's hard to tell what they are really like and do often sound similar. My view is if you want a guitar to keep for a long time and want to see it age more naturally then try and save for the original, if you want a great sounding Strat for a good few years then the Vintera is a great choice!
Spot-on!
Beautiful and, most importantly, honest review.
I own a modified Vintera 50s and I really love its tones!
Awesome glad you enjoyed it :)
Hey ! What PU you got on your vintera ?
I have a left handed Fender Original 50s Strat and it is a great guitar. The lefties just come in one colour - white - but that is the one I would have picked anyway as it has an Ash body that shows the grain nicely through the thin nitro, and it looks great with a Maple fretboard. I was surprised just how much I love the thick neck.
Sounds like a lovely guitar! And it was lucky then that was the colour you wanted! :)
The Vintera definitely sounds more like I would expect a good, authentic strat to sound.
To me the Vintera was slightly brighter, a bit more spanky, but they both sound great. I think choosing between them, the American would have to feel a lot nicer to play than the Vintera in order to justify the price difference. You could get a Vintera Strat & Tele for the same money.
Good point regarding being able to buy a Strat and a Tele! Thanks for your feedback too

I have a vintera 50s mod in 2t sunburst. Amazing guitar
I had the white blonde AO50s for a few months (I do regret selling it though) and one thing I must say is that it was the warmest sounding strat I ever had. It also felt a level above in terms of quality to any other strat I held (which is every strat except Custom shop)
I have recently bought the Vintera 50's Modified & I can't fault it for tone or quality. Worth comparing it with the standard 50's Vintera model if you're looking to buy a Vintera!
Glad your happy with it Vernon! The Vintera Modified has one of the best necks I've ever felt!
@Jonathan Cook Hey Jonathan that's Awesome! Glad your happy! My favourite Strat pickups ever are the Chris Buck signature set by Radioshop Pickups, they are designed to have reduced wax potting so you hear every nuance so if it's the funky thing your going for, the little touches and dynamics really come alive! I have also heard great things about Monty's Pickups but I haven't tried any yet! I did like the Vintera Modified pickups, I just prefer lower output pickups so you've definitely not got a bad sounding guitar as it is! :)
@Jonathan Cook sounds like you'll have a good collection! We are the same, we've slowly been collecting the "main" guitars as they are useful for videos, and we've grabbed a bargain here and there for guitars we won't use as much but handy to have! That Tele sounds awesome though! Let us know what it's like when you get it!
To me, the original just seemed more alive, the notes seem to jump out with more clarity
Thanks! It was great to play!
i find that the vintera has more clarity, and sounds cleaner too
Both fabulous sounding guitars down to different pick up specs ..carnt pick one really ..50/50 ..Down to a finale play test which one I felt comfortable for me ..
Hi thanks for the vid again. Really helpful. Don’t think the vinteras sound much different and the price difference is massive so unless I have lots of money 🤣 to spend. I’ll go with the vintera. Thanks again. Couldn’t find a comparison between these 2 anywhere
Hey Jason glad we could help and thanks for the great idea! It was a really close contest...
Great and honest comparison guys, thabk you ! Vintera sounds brighter IMO, and slightly harsher. The American sounds more balanced, and pickups sounds slightly hotter. Both sounds great ! I've just ordered a vintera 50 yesterday, after testing a 70 vintera, can't wait to get it !
Thanks for the kind words! Awesome! Let us know how your getting on with it? :)
@@TheLickLoft I've had my vintera for a few days now. Very happy, just one disappointment : pickups output is very low, it's hard to get distortion from my amp (I get distortion very very easily with my other guitar with humbucker). I will buy a boost pedal to fix this problem. Beside that, it's a great guitar, well built, easy to play, and great looking in Sonic blue.
@@mrdt011 Glad you like it! Having a low output guitar once you get the right pedal or setup can be a great thing as you've got so much room dynamically as they are low output so stick with them and try a pedal or 2 :)
@@TheLickLoft will do sir ;) and you've just had a new subscriber to your channel btw
@@mrdt011 glad to have you with us!
The Vintera would be a fab work guitar! I don't play out anymore and wanted an axe with lacquer for the aging value ... it was pricey but what a big fat neck and gorgeous guitar. Sounds incredible. (50's version American Original)
Another great video! Thanx guys!! Both sounded good, but my choice would be the American original. Liked its tone a little better. Have you reviewed the American performer series? I just got a tele in Honeyburst finish, and it sounds and looks fantastic!
Thanks Jurgen! Really appreciate the kind words! We haven't done any videos on the performer series as there were so many out there by the time we were able to film them, but they are awesome and the honeyburst performers look incredible!
Seafoam green all the way!👌
The gold strat has a more clarity and warm sounding pickup.
But i like the sound of the seafoam green 😊 nice vidZ!
Thanks Jerry! Seafoam green might just be my favourite colour too!
I think the difference is more a matter of pickups and it's barely noticable, the two guitars sounds good but I'd go for the Vintera for its price, spending almost the double at this point would be only a question of pedigree..
Another great one! A video with Vintera 60 vs original 60? With the professional in it? Wich one is the lowest output?
Thanks for the great idea! We'll see what we can do..
*That tone has a godly body*
Thanks Kamy!
There is a big difference between tremolos. On Vintera you have Taiwan tremolo with a zync block. So if you swap tremolo on Vintera both guitars will sound very close, especially with swaping pickups to 57/62
Interesting! Thanks for commenting :)
well Nitro cellulose finish vs poly finish is a big difference in feel sound is almost same you can dial it on the amp its all about the feel I played both
I have a Partscaster with an American performer body, vintera 50’s neck maple neck one piece, fat 50’s pickups and American tremolo. So it’s like the best of both worlds I’m considering swapping the neck but my only reason is to have an all American strat but besides that it’s an amazing guitar as is.
Hey,what do you think about the neck? Is it slim or.chunky?
Vintera! I´ve got the 60s Strat in ice blue metalic and ist an absolute Dream!
Great choice of colour!!
great comparison guys! in my opinion the American original have more attack and definition, but anyway both are great guitars, is the neck to thick in the American original?
Thanks Gio! They are both a "soft V" profile so they are chunkier than most strats I've played lately but not by much and very similar to eachother!
tried a couple of vinteras they weighed a ton and the 7.25 fretboard radius was no fun!!! but still a decent guitar
hi.could you guys do fender player vs standard usa[or professional] ? thank you .bless ~~
Hey, I'm sure we can manage that for you :)
Weird. Was the amp really low in the room? They sound very similar here, but on the A Strings demo they are night and day to my ears. Thanks for the demo
Hey Adam thanks for watching, we had it pretty loud in there as the shop was closed so we could make some noise! I agree with how similar they sound recorded though. Just an sm57, a blues junior pretty loud and nothing done in post at all so tried to make it as fair as possible :)
Hey guys awesome video! What would you personally prefer?
Danny here - There is something special for me personally about the Vintera (not modified) pickups. I really love the in between positions so I think I'd edge to that.. just!
@@TheLickLoft awesome! Thanks for the great comparison, you earned a sub.
@@thejazzguy561 thanks Jay we appreciate it!
Do they have similar neck profiles?
Almost identical I'd say! Both a "soft V" neck profile
All I know is I saved a pile of $$$ buying my Vintera 50s Strat, and I love it. The pickups are a little underpowered, but sound damned sweet. Solution? Get a graphic equaliser with gain boost. Presto. Your guitar can cover anything.
Can I play every genre of music on the Fender strat vinter 50s? And which one should I get the vintera modified or the vintera?
You can technically play any genre on any guitar but traditionally some guitars are 'better' suited to certain genres. If you are looking to play pop, blues, funk, rock etc, then a strat can be great! If you are using lots of gain and playing heavier music you might want to look at something with humbuckers, but Biffy Clyro use a strat through a metal zone so there are no rules!
A HSS Fender Player might be more versatile as it has single coils and a humbucker.
I preferred the Vintera over the modified but I'd recommend trying them both, thanks!
@@TheLickLoft Thank you so much for the reply! But, from your experience. Does the modified sound a lot brighter than the regular vintera? Is the modified worth the extra 100 dollars?
@@joshuajaimes121 I would say the Vintera sounded a bit brighter to my ears than the modified. The modified has higher output pickups which makes it a little darker to me, I do prefer the satin finish of the modified neck though but I'd still get the Vintera for me personally over the modified for what I play
I have a second hand vintera 60s. I prefer it over my American pro II
Good demo,no much différence. For the price I'll go to the Vintera ans perhaps change pickup later.
the origanal has a non hum cancelling position 2 and 4? or it is just my impression?
Hi Pablo I'm pretty sure both guitars had hum cancelling in the in-between positions. Thanks!
The vintera sounded really thin and weedy compared to the American original which sounded full and rich especially the in between settings.
Original sounds a little better, more 3D and fullness. I bet with a pickup swap to the pure vintage strat pickups in the vintera they'd be neck and neck though.
They were so close in our opinion, couldn't pick a favourite, but I love nitro finished guitars so the American original edges it
I was shocked for the vintera, really strat sound originally & more clear articulate sound, the american series more power but i feel loosing articulate & strat sound in my opinion
I prefer the american original in this video ...but how do you think the original compares whith a Pro strat ?
Pretty close with the pro maybe sounding and feeling a bit more "modern"
To my ears, the 50s Vintera has that Strat sound and with more clarity compared to the Am Original in both clean and dirty modes.
Something special about the Vintera pickups I believe :)
I would imagine the playability and finish on the original is a lot better but not 1000 bucks better. Fender really stepped it up with the vintera. Sound wise the original was a bit bassy almost muddy because of it but still sounded great. The vintera pickups are gems. For the price I like the vintera by miles. Vintera sounded more vintage than the original to me.
Thanks for the feedback Aaron! The Vintera pickups are really special.
I thought the Vintera sounded brighter, more immediate, and clearer, especially clean. With dirt, the difference was less noticeable.
Thanks Jonathan
Great review. Is the neck on the originial more «beef» ? The radius on the original 50s is 9.5 and the mim is 7.25 - can you notice that ?
Thanks Henrik! To be honest Bonners the store we were at have such a great tech, that the guitars were setup amazingly well so the difference in radius wasn't noticeable at all. I could imagine with a poor setup the 7.25 could cause a few issues with big bends perhaps? But hard to tell as both played great and you could bend as high as you like :)
It's definitely noticeable. A good set up will make them playable for sure, but again :it's something you notice right away
@@Fox-86 definitely agree!
I tried Vintera and it is best feeling strat NECK , after many years
They are great :)
Fender Vintera is where it's at for the drive sections
Thanks Dylan! We love the Vintera's
Original 50s all day long. Sounds more articulate and clear. Is it worth the price difference? Yes if you can't find a cheaper way to get similar tone and better wood, finish, electronics, feel, and overall looks.
Thanks Joseph for your feedback!
I would love to see how the American Original 60s compares to Vintera modified 60s
We'll try and sort that out for you Colin but it depends when we can get back to Bonners and what's in stock :)
The Lick Loft that would be great as am looking to get either one but preferably one that will retain more value with the years . Looking forward to the vid thanks
Colin Snowmann all Fender’s hold their value well.
With such a comparison you just have to start from the price here.
And every fair music lover has to admit that the AO doesn't sound like (almost) double the price.
I understand where you are coming from Linus, I think price and sound are impossible to measure against eachother financially though.. it's just great we have options at different price points, that are actually still great guitars!
Does the AO sounds 2x better ? Not really, but you can't compare these 2 guitars only on the sound. It's also about materials used for the instrument (pick ups, electronics, steel pieces etc). If the quality is higher, as it's supposed to be on US instruments, it lasts much longer in time than cheaper materials often used on mexican guitars. Pieces of wood being used and body finished also determine how the guitar is going to aged. btw the video didn't mention the AO
has a nitrocellulose lacquer which is more fragile t
han polyester/urethan but looks and ages certainly better. Finitions, setup, quality controls (and eventually a case ?) are also to include into the price. To be honest, most of the time, the tone and the feel you have playing a 2000$ or a 700$ guitar isn't the same at all. and if you feel better, you play better. My humble opinion.
@@guillaumechabert2357 You make very good points! We did mean to mention the nitro but these were shot in quite a rush so a few things may have got forgotten! Thanks for watching/commenting!
Original ftw
I would agree that the Original sounds a bit better, but definitely not enough to justify the price tag. The Vintera can be found for less than £700 here in the UK. You could upgrade it with pickups of your choice (a set of Bare Knuckles would set you back £250) and you would arguably have a better guitar than the Original for less than a grand.
We do love bare knuckles!
The lick loft. Sounds like somewhere your uncle Steve takes you when your parents are out.
Different string gauges, Vintera 9-42, Original 10-46
They were both strung with 10-46
The Lick Loft - thanks for the info
Dudes, you've got more commercials on your video than Super Ball event.
Sorry will have a look what's going on as we haven't chosen this
If you dont like the pickuos on the vintera then no matter what others you could replace them with you'll still be quids in compared to the US modelk.
We loved the pickups on the Vintera
Definitely the original US just had better in the neck pick up and the bigger neck and radius very important
Thanks Sam!
I somehow think that the vintera sounded more "vintage" or "original" because there is some dirt in it as long as I can judge via a UA-cam video. The original sounded a tiny bit to bassy for my taste. But I guess the original 50s feel a bit better. I guess I have to test both of these in person. I am lucky that my local music shop runs both of these beauties.
Vintera👍
Doesn't sound like twice the price.
I prefer the brighter vintera, i prefer brighter guitars, so i can roll off the tone if i want to
I prefer the vintera in every way.much warmer tone.the other one sounds brittle
Thanks Jon!
I like the way the vintera sounds and looks better
It is a great guitar! The pickups are magic
Fender stratocaster vintera best sound!
Thanks Silvio!
Vintera sounds vintage and i prefer when it comes to playing solo, but when playing rhythms, i think American original has better clarity. Vintera sounded a bit too dirty that causes loss on balance of the tune. I like it's look and especially name.
Thanks S O! Interesting points :)
American definitely sounded better. Both sound great but the MIA sounded just a bit fuller and better to me.
Thanks for watching as always Airblazer! Hope you are well
The Lick Loft all great lads. Nice to see you back making more videos. I bet Danny is only now realising how much work babies are 😀
@@Airblazer Yep! Making them was less stressful than having one! 🤣
Ur pp tells a lot
Sorry for the cliche' but it really is all in the hands. Bad players have bad tone. Both really nice guitars.
The Vintera is ok but the Original is superior in my ears. The resonance. The natural reverberation. I don't know...just a bit superior I think.
Thanks Gilles! Interesting stuff!
For the money I pick the vintera. Didn't hear much sound difference. I'd probably throw some lollars in it though.
Big fan of Lollars here too :)
You hand the Vintera to david gilmour or clapton and let them play in studio or on stage. Do you think people will go damn that's good playing shame the guitar is kinda shit? there's a point when a guitar is good enough and i think vintera is where is at. Strats, Unlike les pauls dont need to be expensive to be good
I have to be honest the original strat sound better, has better low end.
Thanks Benjamin!
Vintera
Wow basically identical 😵🍔🌭
Thanks for watching Bruce 👊
Sounds like a strat
Phew! That's a relief!
The key to these type of demo's is to watch the players facial expressions - seems to be enjoying the Vintera more
The American made guitar has better wood and a lacquer finish... and a hard shell case.
Fair enough Lorenzo! Thanks for watching
Vintera sounds better! I'm not a gear snob and just being honest
Fair enough Captain! We love the Vintera's so no argument here!
Oh there’s always that guy who has to attack the higher/more expensive guitars
American original the 1 best
American Vintage all day long
It is great!
They sound about the same
Hey guys ! MEXICO and US are both IN américa ! Please a little general culture ! At least !
We dont deny that! However one says made in Mexico and one says made in USA on the guitar. Hence why we say that, thanks.
l prefer vintera~~haha.
They are great!
honesty the thing is the price~~so l take vintera.sounds almost the same.
@@user-hf2lg7pg3g That's fair enough :)
A lot more string buzz on the vintera
Vintara sounds like an ice pick, and being that you did not gain match the samples, the average untrained ear shall always just pick the loudest guitars.
The AO has way more warmth, much better, harmonic content, no contest.
You need to gain match dude……a typical mistake, and leads to people drawing false conclusions…….just saying
Made in México
Made in américa WTF
America is a continent not a country.
I'd rather be a continent than incontinent.
Sorry.
