In today's video we were lucky enough to have after-hours access to Bonners Music in Eastbourne to check out the new Fender Vintera range and have a guitar tone shootout! We have some exciting videos in the pipeline but today we compare the Fender Vintera 60's Strat against the Fender Vintera Modified 60's Strat.
We plugged both the Vintera Stratocaster and Vintera Modfied Stratocaster straight into a Fender Blues Junior. We used no pedals in this video. All of the gain came from the amp with an SM57B in front of it to try and make it as fair as possible.

Which one did you prefer and why? Let us know below!
I like the modified one better.
The difference in sound, without using any pedals, is a bit too subtle too appreciate for my ears at least, but the modified has the nicer colour! As a sidebar, you guys just confirmed I want that Blues Jr!!
The Original and the Best!
Modified. Has more low and low mids extension, sounds very much like early CBS gray bottom pups, perfect.
Not a ton of difference but to my ears the modified sounds sweeter maybe a little more compressed. I like the S1 with the bridge pickup alone a little Telecaster sounding, did not care for adding the neck pickup to position 4. I like how you did your comparison without a full pedalboard coloring everything. Blues Jrs are great neutral sounding amps
I am a vintage person myself, and I just got the blue one. It is perfect for me, and I love the sound and the playability. I only play clean, and I found that with the bridge tone control, I can dial in a cool sound with the bridge only without the usually harshness. I have a collection of a couple of Fenders, and quite a few Squires, which I love, but this one beats them all for me.
That S1 switch creates a whole new tone dimension. And as for the pickups being a little too hot, just back it off a little on the volume and tone to taste. Although we're in lockdown at the moment, as soon as I can try one then I'm pretty certain that the modified 60's will likely be my new guitar. Back in the day, 1980, I bought a new Strat but had to sadly sell it after a couple of years, so this new Vintera line looks just up my street. Very helpful vid, so many thanks.
Thanks Greg glad it was helpful :) the necks on the modified are honestly the nicest feeling neck we have felt/played in a long time! I'm sure you will be very happy
Thanks for an excellent comparison between the two. I thought the unmodified sounded better, and although I love the fact that Fender are offering so much choice from the Vintera range there isn't much vintage about the modified fingerboard radius. I've owned a 1978 Strat from new and I'm completely at home with a 7.25 radius and if you get them set up right they play just great.
Thanks pgod1960, you're right, a good set up and the radius isn't an issue at all. I really loved the sound of the unmodified pickups
Thanks for the quality sound demo. It's massively helpful on narrowing down a choice. I really want the modified for the 2 point trem and flatter radius, and neck finish, but man I would be lying if I didn't acknowledge that the unmodified version sounded way better dirty to my ears. Wish Fender didn't make the pickups hotter on the modified...
Hey Kaze, Danny here.. you literally summed up my feelings completely! There was something special about how the Vintera sounded with drive, but the feel of the neck on the modified was to die for. Really appreciate the kind words and you watching too.
There are ways to make the normal vintera neck feel like a satin finish if you really want to.
I wonder if they fixed that for the 2021 version, any idea ?
So, i had both here, a burgundy modified and and a blue vintera. What can i say. The Standard vintera just inspiriered me more. The Sound immediately reminded me of this Clapton, Knopfler, Hendrix Sound i love so much.
Im young and i didnt grow up on Vintage spect guitars, but i feel like the 7,25 radius feels just right. Even the Medium Jumbo frets on a modern spect modified vintera feels like there is more resistence when bending.
The Vintage just feels right in my hands and i have no Problems of doing a bend of 4 halfnotes beyound the 12. fret (like David Gilmoure had no Problems with that ;) )
Sorry for my bad english. Greetings from Europe
having a vintera 60s strat, i can totally agree with you
Thank you for your comment! I completely agree with the standard inspiring more for the exact reasons you have said! :)
Put the pickups from the blue one into the modified and you would have a killer guitar. Great videos guys!!
Think we're with you on that one! However I'm sure some people are gonna like the slightly hotter pickups with a more modern feeling guitar so I understand why they've gone that way but we like the best of both worlds!
I would love exactly that!
@@TheLickLoft if they do is out of ignorance in a way because at the end of the day is a strat not an Ibanez and you can get really heavy sounds with the right pedals coupled with low output pickups and it actually sounds better.
I want one the other way around.
Yeah I prefer the sound of a classic guitar
Great video! Thank you for an awesome comparison. Been trying to decide between the 2. I love the tone and feel of that 7.25 inch neck radius vs the 9.5. Could you do a video comparing a $2000 PRS Silver Sky and this Vintera 60's? Since they both have there 7.25 inch neck radius. Thank you
Hey thanks Ellison! The store we sometimes films at re-opened today I think so I'll get in touch with them to see if they have any silver sky's in stock :)
I have the 60s Modified and it's great and I love it! I don't care about the fancy switching in the least. If it broke I'd just fix it to standard wiring with the back pot on the bridge because I always roll back the tone. I'm old and been thru many guitars and these are very good.
I'm in NEED of a burgundy mist strat. I'm considering buying the 60s vintera mod in burgundy mist and just put on a neck I prefer (cant stand the pau ferro) and some 65 pure vintage pick ups. Should be pretty damn good.
Great playing mate. On the clean I think I preferred the modified but on the dirty I preferred the vintage.
Thanks mate! Was a close call with both.. felt great to play!
Im late to the trend but can u guys please do the 50s vs 50s mod, i rlly appreciate it
Playing wise the specs of the Modified appeal to what I need but the traditional spec blue one sounds better.
Danny here.. I'm with you Kenny. Felt exactly the same, however in the room they didn't sound that different but listening back I prefer the Trad pickups I think.. but the feel of the modified neck is amazing
Can you tell the output for the 60 and 60mod pickups? Can’t find anywhere and is so simple to measure (at least the +-6k) please!!
Sorry I can't find the output written anywhere either, I think that's a deliberate part on Fenders behalf as they explain how they are made and what they've gone for rather than list the output.
Great video! I'd really like a vintera 60 vs American professional. Can't decide between the two
We'll see what we can do!
Same for me! I wonder about the pickups. Professional vs 60 vs 60mod. Who has the highest and lowest outputs? Great videos! Thx
@@drmarcioonida I would guess from highest to lowest would be Vintera Modified - Professional - Vintera but that's just a guess from playing them myself and not reading any specs!
The Lick Loft that’s a great feedback! I am looking for a strat with the JM kind of sound and good playability. I just don’t want to have the pro and still have to change pickups for lower output 😅 but the 7,5” and laka I’m still not sure kkk
What pedal were you using when you were playing ‘dirty’? Or was it just the amp cranked up? Btw great comparison!
Hey Thor yeah it was just the blues junior cranked :) thanks for watching!
I prefer the look of the 50s models and would probably go modified, but both of these sound great. You were a regular Nile Rodgers between 3:00 and 4:00!
You are too kind! He is one of my heroes! Thanks for watching Don :)

Great playing gents and a super review. I bought the unmodified model after hearing the killer tone on this video. Thank you. By the way what song is the last dirty riff from, it sounds ace but I can’t place it?
That's awesome Michael! How are you getting on with it? We love that guitar! All of the riffs played in our videos are made up just before filming and can't be exact to a song anymore with copyright restrictions on UA-cam but it's no doubt very similar to something! I will ask Rich when I see him later what song he ripped off! Haha :)
I just played a vintage spec vintera strat in local guitar shop. Gotta say I'm in love again !!
That's awesome Malcolm! We are too! Can't recommend them highly enough
IMO the modified clearly sounds worse... kinda harsh highs, more in your face and less complex tones, with less dynamics, and worse string definition. I wonder if you could achieve a better sound by lowering those PUs a bit further and keeping the maximum volume between 8-9. I don't get why Fender does not go for what probably most people prefer, it's pretty simple we want the best from the past but not the worst. Who cares if it's vintage correct, if the paint had lead back in the 50's would they also replicate that? I mean, it's great to have 7.25 inch radius for those who mostly play chords but wanting a modern radius does not necessarily imply wanting to achieve modern tones.
You make a great point about the volume pot being on 8/9, something that is overlooked alot! We are guilty of overlooking that too! Can get some great tones that way
Completely agree. Modified sounds really bad. Really harsh.
Great review! i'd like to know what Strat has the thinner neck between 60's and the 60's modified? Thanks
Thank you in advance
Thank you Andrea! The 60's modified has a slightly thinner neck perhaps but the main difference is that the modified has a satin finish on the back and not lacquered.
@@TheLickLoft thanks for your reply. I asked this to know which is more comfortable for a small hand
Cheers for great vid can u please do the same with the 50s strats?
I think comparing them to the original series would be really good too because the price difference is massive and would be interesting if the vintera sounded better!
Thanks Jason, we are heading back to Bonners soon so I think we can do that for you! Thanks for the great idea!
Hey Jason you might like our video out later today at 4pm (UK time) Thanks for the great idea :)
Hi superb guitars and demo thanks.;)
do you think Vintera are better than old MIM classic 60's serie?
I search a sweet little sister for my Great RI62 ;)
Hey Chris, I had a Classic 60's and they were great! These are also great.. I wouldn't say there is much between them but there is something really great about the Vintera (not modified) pickups. I think they sound fantastic!
the fretboard on the 60s mod looks a lot darker has it been oiled or soemthing
Yeah definitely must be oil...
Can I purchase a modified Vintera (love the burgundy body color) with the unmodified pickups?
Hey Stephen I'm not too sure sorry, best check with your favourite dealers
do you know if you can buy the modified vintera neck from fender
I don't think you'd be able to.. I don't know 100% but I doubt it, it is unbelievably good the neck!
Well I know what they sound like with the strings muted going “clicky clicky click” now.
The blue sounds better
I went with the Modified version. The 2-point tremolo and the S1 switch, along with the satin neck were features that tipped the scales.
Someone commented that if the Modified version had the pickups from the un-Modified version that it would be killer. I can't argue with that. If the un-Modified version had the two point tremolo and satin neck, I'd have gone with that.
How do the pickups sound if you lower them down a little particularly the bass side, and then keep the volume on the guitar around 8? Does it clear up a little bit and not as bass heavy/harsh
@@jessesmith2906 I can't answer that. Mine has been perfect for me since I got it. other than tuning it, I've done nothing but practice practice practice on this guitar. The Vintera and my SG Standard 61 get the most play time out of my 7 choices, and that includes an American Pro II Strat.
@@pinkiewerewolf what?! You have an American pro ii strat and you still play this more?! Do you play any Hendrix or frusciante funk/rock with it? How does it do with that or should i get some 50’s pickups
@@jessesmith2906 I’m brand new at playing. All I can say is that I love the tones that the Vintera produces, on all switch positions and with the push push activated. When I practice cords and notes this guitar is the most pleasant to my ear.
Hi and thanks for the video. In my opinion, the fender continues to make small mistakes. I think they should have left the six-screw bridge even on the modified model. I am convinced that a six-screw bridge is more sustainable than a two-pivot one. Greetings.
Hi Silvio thanks for watching, I haven't tested a 6 point and a 2 point side by side but from everything I read, I think most people agree with you! All I would say is that the Vintera (not modified) has something really special about it for the price point especially :)
@@TheLickLoft
Thank you for answering. I remain convinced that they should only have changed the radius of curvature. Stop. For me, the ideal is 9.5, an excellent compromise between vintage and modern. The bridge with two screws or two pivots, enhances the high frequencies but leaves behind the mids / high and mids low. I think that type of bridge (two pivots) together with the micro tilt neck, were the worst things that the fender has created. Greetings.
What about in 2021 are your thoughts still the same ?
Meaning are the 2021 modals the exact same or no ?
The only difference between the two is just the pickups?
no
the pickups in the 60s modified sucking comparison and cost more... WHY Fender?! they even sound inferior overdriven.
We do prefer the non modified pickups but we both prefer lower output pickups for our style of playing so it's no surprise
Great playing! I'm considering one of these and I also want to demo it though my YT channel!
You should!
@@TheLickLoft i did buy one.... planning to demo it! Great guitars!!!
@@LostPlectrum awesome :) I'll look out for your demo!
@@TheLickLoft I'll drop a message when ready. I have something else in the pipeline to do before the Vintera one!
@@LostPlectrum great! Look forward to it
This is like a "Pepsi vs Coke" comparison: The Pepsi ("Modified") gives you more of an initial "hit", but the Coke ("Vintage") is better in the long-run.
just played a 60's the fretboard was, light pink,,,horrible
Nice guitars, but c'mon...$899 and $999 for Made-In-Mexico Strats ??? You can get an Indonesian made Schecter , or any number of import guitars that are just as good, if not better, for half that price. And frankly, how may incarnations of "The Strat" do we really need at this point...they're all simply subtle variations of each other.
Hey Stan fair points! I guess some people want a vintage style Fender for less than an American Fender but you are right, the market has so many great guitars for less money. Did genuinely love these though and was surprised how good they were :)
have to agree...the new Shecter Reaper series look fantastic value for money. How does the Vintera rate against the performer series which are around same pricepoint.
@@TheLickLoft Made in Mexico isn't second class now, it's just Fender outsourcing great guitars to their other factory. I bought the 50's Vintera Strat and it's one of the best of many I've owned and I'd put it on a par with Vintage reissues. Superb pickups and re-imagined period correct detail. First class fit and finish and performance - a real upgrade on the Classic series.
@@mickp9261 couldn't agree more! We both play MIM Fenders every weekend and couldn't be happier! These Vintera's are something special though
Stan Kowalski you make a fair point, but what stands against an Indonesian Schecter is the fact it’s......well an Indonesian Schecter. When you buy Fender, whether Mexican, Japanese or American, you’re paying homage to the history of rockin roll. You’re just going to feel different owning it. I realise this point of view is rose tinted, maybe irrational and gushing with nostalgia, but it’s how I and a lot of others feel about it. I spent so many years as a kid pouring over fender catalogs and staring into guitar shop windows promising myself I’d get a Strat one day. These memories have become so deeply imprinted that I could never accept an Indonesian Schecter as a surrogate.
Playing is too limited to really tell what these guitars are capable of
We tried to keep it simple and consistent as we get told we overplay sometimes so I guess we can't make everyone happy! But thanks for watching
Go on then Jimi, impress us with your hot licks
