I have a Mastador!! He’s 7 yrs old and the most amazing dog ever! His litter was an accidental breeding, I had no idea till about two years ago that they were an actual thing that people do lol He has all the best traits from both breeds, so incredibly smart and active like a lab. Huge and protective like an English mastiff. Love my boy Thor

I never thought I could either until I felt like I really had to. A friend knew we had space (physically and mentally) for another dog (Diesel) and also of a dog being very mistreated and neglected. I agreed to go with her after work to see this dog's situation and absolutely could not leave Diesel there even another day. Diesel was the BEST boy, but I have an older male dog (Jake) who is very protective of me. Jake has always been fine with visiting male dogs and absolutely no issues with our female dogs; so, it was a bit of a surprise with Diesel. Diesel was absolutely submissive, and Jake did warm up to him, but with knowing how he was treated before I rescued him I felt he really deserved a more Diesel-only focused home. After I got some weight on him and he was done most his meds I knew it was time to find him his forever home. Anyway (Sorry for waffling) I found a wonderful home for Diesel...I had so many happy tears when meeting with his new family and "passing of the leash". It was bittersweet, but knowing what he came from and knowing I got him back to health (there were many visits to my vet and meds) made it honestly one of the most rewarding things I've ever done! Diesel's family and I always send each other happy gotcha-versary messages and I get occasional pictures as well. He is doing SO great now, and I wouldn't take back any of that experience for the world!

Not to dismiss the idea of a Mastador - they'd be great! - but personally I'd tweak that ever so slightly and go for a Broholmador (Broholmer AKA Danish Mastiff x Lab). I was beside myself when I saw you'd included the Broholmer in the 3rd of your series on rare guarding breeds ... well done; no one else in the UK seems to have heard of them.
I used to have a Huntador (Huntaway x Lab) that I brought over from New Zealand with me - she was a sublime dog, but probably a bit too lively for me now I'm well into my 50s. Maybe the Huntaway would be an idea for one of your videos on little-known breeds? Fabulous family dog, if you can give them a ton of exercise and things to stretch their intelligence.

I was really suspicious of crate training before I got my JRT who is now 11 months. My oldest dog is a rescue, wasn’t crate trained and we didn’t crate him. My middle dog was crated when we left her when she was little but wasn’t crate trained. I knew when getting my youngest girl that life would be so much harder if I didn’t have a safe place to put her. Crate training didn’t come easy to her but now her crate is one of her favourite places, she sleeps 9-8:30 then has at least a 4 hour nap after her walk and it’s where she wants to be. We tried allowing her to free roam when we left the house but it caused separation anxiety, we left for 30 minutes and came home to her watching out the window shaking and wouldn’t leave me the rest of the day. We can leave her in her crate for a couple of hours with no issue.

Honestly when you started about breeding it sounds like when they made Leonbergers not to just look like a lion but be an amazing dog with them having newfie Saint backcrossed to a pyrenean plus the secret dog. Making them amazing with family but also good watch dogs and smart as well although we were told not great for obedience but I was still training new things at 11 Yr old so not so sure about that. But a English mastiff with more get up and go sounds amazing I e always though English mastiff Cross cane Corso would be good it would make them more trainable as well as more athletic

If you don't mind, I have a few things to say on this matter because this is something that I feel those in the dog community need to consider.
There are many great breeders today that are preserving and maintaining old blood lines in our dogs, staying true to our past which is incredibly valuable for us all.
    Having said that..
All dogs have been bred to suit a purpose for us as human beings since the first man/canine relationships began. To say any one generation of breeders had or has the only right or moral high ground to be producing different types of dogs is simply not true. Our dogs evolve with us to suit different purposes, be that as working dogs or more commonly today, dogs that will simply make great companions, OR a mixture of the two.
The real issue is having the knowledge and know how to PROPERLY breed and produce a new generation otherwise said, (type of dog), that is HEALTHY and APPROPRIATE for the dog owners of today. This knowledge and right is not preserved only for breeders of the past but there are those among us today that are fully capable of producing types of dogs that would be of benefit to our society and enhance the lives of those who welcome them into their homes and hearts.
All breeders should strive to do their very best to bring out good qualities in our companions and breed for the health of the dog. This does not limit itself to the dog breeds of the past but can and should be fully embraced and sought after to any and all new dog types we have the privilege to create and discover.
Thanks, for whoever reads this and maybe even perhaps is enlightened by it.
    Melodie.

late to the channel here xD even seems you quit it all together ..
but I'm hoping to get an answer anyway .. why crate training instead of just a dogbed or pillow ?
I too always had dogs, cant imagine life without them but I never had a crate though, my dogs have their beds that they go on (and will stay)
I'm wondering what the crate brings over a dogbed

Just want to say, breeding mutts is a terrible idea, especially breeds so conformationally incompatible and prone to so many of the same health issues. There is already a reputable outcross project using greyhounds. Think about it, there are many reasons that project did not choose to use labs. Don't mess with stuff you don't understand. If your breeder is as reputable as you say they would have a do not breed clause in their contract. If you want to co breed with your breeder, title and health test the dog first, then bring it up with your breeder, but in all likelihood, the breeder decided to pet home the puppy for a reason and she's not breeding quality.

You shouldn't breed. There are too many dogs in the uk and around the world needing homes as it is. @@trioboy-jw4sf you do know that the purebreds you talk about where mutts in the past right? A new breed is created by fusing multiple races of dogs and creating a standard dog that can accomplish what you desire. And rocket is right nowadays there is a lot of "good breeders" that are destroying breeds, one that really bothers me is the boerboel where the breeders are breeding only for size and not caring about the agility and athleticism of the dog
