In this video David records double bass player Nick using Neumann U87's and Vanguard V-13 tube microhone, and he shows us he always has a new trick up his sleeve, even for classical instruments. Wrapping an SM57 and taping it to the bridge of the double bass to capture the articulation and the mid tone of the instrument. A candid studio diary clip, followed by an in depth lesson on phase alignment in the next video.

Better to use two postman elastics under the bridge to hang up your mic with. You can easily make a construction that ties the mic faced-up exactly in the middle under the bridge, hanging totally free. In that way you'll maintain the unhindered working of the bridge and moreover, absolutely no vibrations are being picked up by the mic. My favourite and not too expensive mic I use for my recordings is the Russian built Oktava MK 012.

Would you try the foam trick with an SDC or would it just be too sensitive? If you haven't tried out the Line Audio CM3, I can't recommend them highly enough. The most impressed I've ever been with such a reasonably priced microphone.

    Sponge instead of foam right?

I’m sorry but this is almost useless because you forgot the most important aspect of recording and that is the source. The instrument is absolute garbage. A terrible sounding instrument is going to sound terrible regardless of the mic. However you could have explored ways to make a terrible instrument sound better such as blending with a pick up or using proximity effect to get a wider sound. The only time I have ever been recorded with a condenser that far from the bass was for arco playing.Furthermore the mic placement is completely wack. I have no doubt you have expertise in other areas but recording the double bass is not one of them, sorry.

Lol, I forgot to say "hey let's go buy a better double bass before recording?" 😂 Whatever you say man. Note: proximity effects does NOT make anything sound wider. Proximity effect=more bass, usually muddy and too much on a db. 👍

@@mixbustv Sure, there would be some pushback, I get it. And if you want to talk to a professional doublebassist about doublebass, cool. I still uphold that you can do a lot with proximity effect beyond just making something more bassy and muddy. But therein perfectly illustrates my point. You do not really know how to record a doublebass and therefore should not be making videos about it. Lol. But don't let my experiences with Dave Pomeroy or any other master engineer get in your hair...or thirty five years of playing and recording this instrument. I'm sure you've got this.

@@ibassnote what makes the bass absolute garbage? it's quite unclear and confusing. Can you elaborate a little more on what you mean?
