Notes on the data used for this project:
This study looks at CS:GO accounts that were active between May 2020 and May 2021. This left us with 7 million accounts from around the globe. 40% of these accounts did not have region data publicly available for them, and were therefore excluded from analysis. We are operating on the assumption that these unknown accounts were randomly distributed in terms of rank and region, but if that is not the case then these results could be skewed as a result. Really glad this seems to be getting more attention, its really annoying to play NA when the entire bottom half of the population is silver...
playing on OCE feels fucking awful sometimes, they get one or two gold nova 3 players while were all silver 4 or silver elite, and we just get smashed by their one player who gets almost 30 kills while the rest of his team get barely 5 kills each

S1 to GN4 is the bottom 88% of players in OCE… combine this with a system that favours short/instant queue times over fair ranked matches and you’ll see why it has gotten this bad 😞 I rather wait 10 minutes for a fair game than 1 minute for a game that will continue to waste a further 50 minutes and give me the worst experience of my life lol

NA competitive has been this way for over a year at this point. It's ridiculous how the devs still haven't addressed it.
In OCE you can't even get around it by queueing faceit because you just get lumped in with rank 10s when you're a brand new account rank 1 LOL

ive never seen any data like this for oceania (where i live) and this makes so much more sense. literally all of my friends are either silver or gold and they are not bad at the game
My friends and I are MGE even though we win about 80% of our games. Recently, we were on an 11 game win streak with no rank up to DMG but then we lost one game and my friend deranked to MG2. We also played a 5 queue of globals from EU and absolutely destroyed them. MM is so fucked that we just decided to download faceit and honestly I don't ever want to go back.

i know that this reply is a year late, but matchmaking is fucked basically everywhere, even eu. it once took me 27 games to get from dmg to le, with only 4 of those 27 games being losses

I'm from OCE, the average nova 1 player in OCE would be a good LE or LEM in EU in terms of aim and movement basic game knowledge, but its positioning we really fall short on idk why.
I'm an NA player and I have to say it is kinda impossible to rank up to MG by solo q in NA servers. I was stuck at nova for over a year until I started to play in lobbies. I eventually got to global elite by grinding elo from silvers (because there are only a few high rank players in NA we often ran into silver and novas) with near 100% win rate.

Gaussian distribution is a good wave-hand comparision but it isn't the one that would appear in a 'ideal' situation for discrete and finite number of states (ranks).

IDK about 5 months ago when you reposted this, but this statement is not true any longer. I've deranked from DMG in the last 6 months all the way down to Silver Elite... then back to Nova 3, and then back down to SEM... and now I've been sitting at GN2 for months and no rank up. Silver is definitely easier to get out of compared to Nova.

Watching from Africa and quite pissed since our rank system was reset recently and most of the LE players like me are now silvers. There’s almost no skill difference from the average silver 4 to nova 4 now. They messed it up big time.

i started playing in 2014. My rank settled at Mg1. I noticed that once cs went f2p in 2017 the ranking system turned to shit and i deranked to silver and haven't got out since. Same with many of my friends. I think if you look at historical data you'll see it was caused by something related to f2p.

same issue, gold nova became master guardian on european servers, before f2p gold nova was gold nova,
I’m in NA as a nova 3 and my last 3 games have been Full LEM-Global matches with 1 nova on each team
I'm only SE, but I often get GN2 Europeans in my lobbies once in a while, and they play like they are S1.
Any chance the two regions that lost the most players to valorant (oce and NA) are meaningfully connected?
I play with a fullstack of friends most of the time and every 2nd game we face opponents who have 200 hours and still put up 40 frags.
Our group ranks from GN2 to MG2. Some players just started playing CSGO a year ago so their accounts look like smurfers but obviously they lack a good amount of skill yet and therefore are often times in the bottom of the scoreboard. The game should realize by now that this is not a smurf account. :D
We play in Europe so on paper we have the best case scenario on our hands and yet most matches we get outclassed or we outclass the other team. A game where everyone is on the same level is quite rare.
At this point something has to happen, Valve has to do something. MM is frustrating and feels like a huge waste of time most of the time.

Im global in Oce but this is an understatement of the all the problems, my friends will que into games where we vs people in silver or nova for no apparent reason, this means some of a our games are just a waist of time for both teams. This also is ignoring the massive cheating problem in all of CSGO, i hope CS 2 fixs some of these issues cause i dont want to move to europe just to play my favourite game.
I love pulling 55 kills on mirage against people no where near my skill level and having their fate be decided if im feeling generous today
Alot of the OCE players moved to valorant, once you hit mg2 in oce you can barely find a mm game.
I take it this means comparing stats on leetify means it's comparing to say an EU GN1 rather than an NA GN1?
What if we combine all the region into "Global/worldwide rank distribution"? Will it become a bell-shaped?
Maybe the MM was set into 1 Global/Worldwide ranking instead of dividing into per Region ranking or smth like that.
(idk if my comment doesn't make any sense but maybe we can get the assumption about that)

For 2021 anyway, your theory seems spot on.
should calculate the 5.7 rank spread for each region seperately, also maybe add some speculation about true MMR
This was calculated per region! 5.07 was just for NA data, since it was used against NA data in the video.
For the other regions:
Europe: 4.8
SA: 4.9
Oceania: 4.9
Asia: 5.0
So since the rank spread is actually pretty similar for each region, the issue is less that silvers are getting matched against people way higher rank than them, the issue is that silvers have to play against other silvers that are way better than them!

I play on NA and there are so many players with 2k+ hours that are stuck silver
Considering the number of smurf/cheater accounts restarting in the lower rank I'm surprised the bell shape is preserved in any regions.
Any data to support that the players are trapped in low ranks? What about lots of people starting to pick up the game and then stopping?
i have 3000 hours and was mg1 around 2017, my account got replaced in silver 2.... i rarely play but when i do i get matched against other silvers with thousands of hours and 5+ years of experience lmfao
Not only that but I'm mg always matched against s1-s3 in NA, so much more than 5 ranks apart. I just won 14 games since my last rank up and lost 3 and deranked I counted the round totals 357 won 162 lost.. Always carrying. NA is so broken. I used to be global for years, now I can't hold onto mg

The reason NA matchmaking is like that is 2 big reasons. 3rd party matchmaking and cheating. you'll find lots of faceit 10's or just people in general that have done a lot of 3rd party matchmaking and it really breaks the balance of the experience. It doesn't surprise me at all that the lower population ties into the theory that there's just less new or unskilled players playing the game anymore solely because they get shitstomped so hard. Last time i played mm on my alts it was just a terrible and insufferable experience. sometimes you get the good players on your team, sometimes you dont, and you're just watching toddlers get minced in a meat grinder.

Well, this explains why I could destroy MGE players while being silver 3 prior to the update and not rank up at all. Now I’m speeding through gold nova like I should have to begin with.

I only play once in awhile and find that in silver a lot of the players are not silver and used to be higher ranks(mg +)

Built my friend's PC's. They refuse to play CSGO now because it's way too hard. I used to be a MG, and even smurfed a new account and got DMG as my baseline, however I cannot pass SE or SEM. Wildly unbalanced, keeps new players from wanting to play, and I can't find a good team. Hopefully CS2 isn't this bad for NA servers.

I knew NA MM was screwed, once I reached DMG and had silvers on my team. At that rank, I shouldn't be playing with ANY silvers. Yet, there I was.

I have 1400 hours and just hit silver elite. And thats 5 stacked with 4 other good players. The only reason I didn't quit play cs is because rust had a much worse barrier to being a normal player.

Isn't a possible reason a true lack of skill and then players getting connected to servers of different region?
So for example, when I played really early in the morning I once ended up playing with Australian players. Now suppose they had a bell curve based rank, an MG might be having that rank just because people there lacked the skills, and then I'd go into an MG lobby and wreck everyone.
I've seen a trend in players of geographies. A certain geography has more toxic players and no coordination, another country has players who are always laughing and having fun where as players from India are mostly serious and sometimes toxic.
That might be a reason, an actual difference.
An actual difference in skill, if applied across the entire continent, should still even out, as the skill required for a higher rank would be lowered since they would be a larger portion of the playerbase. In other words, if noobs are the average, then they would be gold because they're the average skill of the matchmaking pool.
Besides which, 50% of a playerbase of 500k being in the bottom most echelon of ranks is fucking nuts. There is simply no way 250k players all just happen to be doing significantly worse than those in every other rank set. Something was rather fucked somewhere, as a statistical anomaly that large is nigh impossible with a properly functioning system.

I don't care how many people it will piss off, but CS:GO needs seasonal ELO resets like R6S. I think R6 is a dog shit game, but I've always been envious of their ranking system.
Will it suck at first? Yeah, having a high rank you worked a long time to earn and maintain stripped away from you is unfair; but honestly, players that deserve high ranks will always have them after resets because they are consistently good.
I used to be an LEM, but after years of sporadic activity and rank decay, my account is clearly a lower rank than it should be. The issue is that there are obviously so many people in the same boat. I'll play SEMs that have 3k hours and screenshots of previous ranks being DMG+, while at the same time playing in groups that have MGs that are clearly worse than myself and a few of the other silvers I play with.
The ranks are broken, the system just needs to be reset.
This isn’t just csgo, it’s literally every game. Climbing in OCE is hell.
MM system 2023 now days are broken i fight against the GE & SMFC in the first time but my rank is GNM but the 2016 to 2019 MM system is perfect for me because balance fight against the silver to silver or gold nova to gold nova
Most NA players assume that other regions have their same issue because they haven't played on other servers. I live in EU for 2 years. I can say without a doubt EU is more fun and balanced servers to play on. NA is a cluster fuck of balance
its not the ease of ranking out of silver one its the impossibility of ranking up from silver 2. i get super ez matches and matches from hell and the ranks are all silver 1 and 2 american csgo rank distribution is super terrible

I am an LE (atm) player from OCE and I can 1000000000% confirm that the ranks in OCE have been completely busted for about 4 years (i've been playing 5 years) I have a feeling, it is because OCE has a abnormally high number of cheaters. Its just my empirical analysis, so take it with a grain of salt, but the trustfactor/mm experience in OCE is akin to being in CS hell

This is definitely a problem but it's also a huge problem that you will often face teams that not only do not match up in skill to yours, but also when their ranks are extremely high compared to yours.
Just last night I solo queued CSGO as a gold nova 4 and my team was matched up against a 5 queue that happens to also be an ESEA-O team which consisted of 3 DMGs, 1 MGE, and a Gold Nova 2.
My team was gold nova 4 (me), gold nova 3, gold nova 1, and 2 silvers.
HOW DOES THAT HAPPEN???? We won, but it's still so fucked. CSGO is basically not worth playing anymore in NA. It's fucking ruined.
i remember a long time ago, maybe 2018 i queued with a 5 man of all silvers and there was a GE and a LEM on the enemy team lmfao, they queued with 3 silvers

I know I'm late but it's been a year or more and Volvo still no fix. It's honestly cringe that they haven't even acknowledge it and to fix it. North America has a huge problem for new players.. The silver 1 and silver 2 rank is full of excellent players and noobs. I see people carrying with 30 kills total and people learning the game with 2 kills total and they are the same rank!!! I feel bad for people trying to learn. I personally de-ranked from a double AK to silver 1 over the past few years even though I am typically the #1-#3 player on my team, and my win to loss ratio has been above 50%.

NA is nothing compared to the fuckfest in OCE. It all stems from the same issue, household income.
Casuals in OCE mostly play on console. In Asia or SA for example, most houses don't have the luxury of a console. But they do have PCs that can run non intensive games like CS. So you wind up with a ton of casuals maining comp CS the way we main games like COD on console in OCE.
SO the regions with healthy rank distribution have a wider range of skill levels in their base.
OCE playerbase is very skilled.
Most Aussies run smurf accounts to get around this and q up with friends. Which means at any rank unnder GN4/MG1 is bound to be a mix of high MG+ smurfs, cheaters, and a handful of other players like you who are under-ranked.
Ive seen sharp players in Silver 5 with 4500hrs in OCE.
Me and my mates went from high silver/low nova to MG DMG LE by using a VPN to q in Singapore. Proof positive.
This still completely baffles me how approx 66% of the whole Oceania player base are silver.
I've played a bit over 2k hours for over 5 years and have barely broken into nova a handful of times, coming against a lot of people ranked S4 that play better than GN4s

I was MG1 in OCE in about 2017-2019 area, coming back in 2022 and I have climbed from S3 to SEM in about a week or so but the games are always so unbalanced its insane, ive had games where ive gotten 10 kills and still won or one game where i got 40 kills and almost lost.

Playing MM in Oceania actually sucks. Literally making CSGO a dead game in the region because everyone is stuck in silver against smurfs or hackers.
The good news is that this is a totally fixable issue! But I agree that if it doesn't get fixed it will certainly discourage a lot of new players from really picking up the game the way we have

I mean assuming that's true (which I mean it kind of is) it wouldn't explain how that would work. The OCE and NA players only play against each other so it should be relatively balanced like other normal regions. It's just fucked for other reasons.
Prove me wrong, the rank distribution is broken because how bad the hacker epidemic is. If you have 120k cheater accounts/ults how will that effect the data? NA has been in a sad state for what feels like a decade.

The friends I play with all yo-yo around high silver, but we _routinely_ get MM with whole teams of MG1 -> LEM.
So we said F*CK valve - now we play Valorant where at least this kind of problem does not exist.
