We kept finding we needed a folding table. This is so easy to store. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxStL0QRChBju4aQlnTrRgBZvafFog0KU3 Opening and closing is easy as well. It has a great handle for carrying around the house. Its pretty lightweight and slides around easy. We bought it for our daughter’s first sleepover. Breakfast was a blur - but 12 7-8 year olds fit at the table with room to spare. We used it at thanksgiving and 6 adults fit comfortably on each side plus 2 on either end for a total of 8. Super easy to clean up afterwards as well.

This was a helpful overview of a Rule Joint. My question is what radius to use for the round-over and cove bits if you want a drop-leaf top that is 1.4" thick? All or most, I have seen are 3/4" to 1" thick.

Thanks for this tutorial. I have one question. I want the dropleaf to sit flush with the end of the top when dropped. i.e, using 9mm ply for the top and dropleaf, can it be square edged so all the tabletop edges are unshaped and square to the top, the top surface of the dropleaf level with the underside of the top.

Thanks for making this video, lots of good info. But when the drop leaf is folded down, don't you see the hinge mortise at the bottom of the center piece round over? I do. It doesn't look good. Popular Woodworking did a similar video for the rule joint wherein they suggested NOT mortising in the hinges, specifically because of this problem. I thought the drop leaf edge would cover the mortise. My test piece looked good, but the real table does not. : ( What am I missing?
can these be used to rotate the table top 180 degrees?
Were you able to determine why the rule joint would bind after you had made a routing template and cut everything as precisely as you did? I was expecting the joint to move freely, and not require additional nudging to complete the fit.
He had to trim off the leaf because he clamped the top and the leaf together without leaving a gap. Installation step #3 says to leave a 1/32" gap, which he didn't do.
Wouldn't you want the knuckle of the hinge to be located on the center line of the roundover on the table side?
Would this work if you had square edges rather than rolled edges?
the pivot point would have to be in the center-line with square edges, or if you're determined to have it flush and still be offset you could have a round-over on the bottom of the centerpiece, leaving the outer piece still flat, not as elegant but it works.

Does anyone else think the rule joint looks a bit old-fashioned? I'm tempted to try it, but I would like my table to have a more modern feel.
Naaah. Any hinges will work what are you talking about. And there are many ways to get the leaf to stay up
