thank u based harvard philosopher
Fortunately it doesn't matter if people make fun of you.

It's easy just "be the top 1%"
Yeah
.
@Dancing Cats It's but what you ate saying is not like that
He's such a genuine person and honestly they're very rare.
Well, I got into Harvard with SAT of 1410, so I agree that this is not the most important thing. Completely agree with John - you have to be passionate about something (of course having achievements in the field is very helpful to prove that) and you have to be an interesting person.
Very nice videos. Looking forward to seeing you soon, John :)
Dimitar Karev Thanks pal. Most people around me always discourage me saying that I've got average gpa and that I need 1550+ sat score for getting into Harvard. Your comment is giving me hope.
Good chance he is lying, I have seen plenty of comments like this(not saying your 100% one of those liars) but there's a possibility.
so what was your passion?
Thank god. I see all these utubers with like a 1550 sat and like a 4.0 gpa talking about how sat doesnt matter. LIKE EASY FOR U TO SAY. but then again if u have a lower gpa and sat and stuff u have to be pretty amazing at extra curriculars
Hey Dimitrar,
I'm a high school student aspiring to go to ivy league schools my SAT score is 1400 but I am really good academically ...I want to know if it is actually worth my time aspiring for ivy schools or should I just aspire for tier 2 schools....what's your opinion
To get into Harvard you must be better than 99% of people.
That means you are worse than 77 million people
But the acceptance rate is 6%
Be Fearless,Passinate and DEVELOP!....you will be better thn 99% of people
Actually u should be better than 99.999%
@@lukejames3039 The bad ones don't apply. The people that apply are mostly people that have a chance to get in
1. 1% rule: GPA/SAT/ACT score in the top 1%
2. Passionate about a specific thing and make sure you are excellent at that passion
Hey , i was not good in school academics but i am in 1% in gpa sat and act .... Is there any hope?
@@KEEPITON not for Harvard tho you can get into other colleges like UCLA and NYU but not ivies
@@KEEPITON you need to try!
So basically, Harvard bets on people who have a true passion for life and have an incredible power that they know, that you can develop. It really improve my mood watching great videos like this. Thanks for your work!
Out of all the videos I've seen about getting into Harvard, I think this was the best one! Thank You❣️❣️
Ana Rocha hi
“you don’t need to be perfect, but you need to be at the very top.”
I think, one of the coolest things about pursuing your passion is not only the inspiration you are opened up to in your experience as an individual but also the inspiration others are enlightened to, in watching and learning from you. This is exactly the case with your videos John! :)
Dude... You are brilliant! Best of luck in Harvard.
Man, it is so nice the way that they choose students in the US. Here in Brazil the only thing that matters is your grade at tests. They don't care if you're a bad or good person, they only care about your score at the test.
Im in 10th grade and pretty lost and flooded with so many ppl telling me different advice and thank god i found you bc i feel way better and things just seam more clear. Thanks
I have a couple of weeks before I start freshman year of high school, I'm glad I found this guy
:] aw shit you’re a sophomore now. Me and you are in the same boat. In a boat without a paddle up shits creek. My life is filled with APs
Aryavir Sangwan wow I made this comment 2 years ago. I’m now in college. Good luck to you guys enjoy every minute in high school with your friends go out bc it will be worth it. Study hard and get good grades that will also be worth it especially when it comes around to looking for colleges. Good luck guys
glleboy thanks man. With the pandemic, classes are tough, procrastination is rampant. You worked hard, now you’re in college. You graduated this year then? You escaped the jaws lol
Aryavir Sangwan yea the last half on my senior year was online so I missed out on prom, parties, spring break and more. But yes I agree procrastinating is big thing for me too rn you just got to realize that a year or two from now your going to wish you did what you were supposed to do.
I know this video's from 6 years ago, but I've been stressing all my life about college and getting into an Ivy and all that, and this video just helped calm a lot of that anxiety. Thank you
My passion is an unknown sport: Calisthenics! And I do train every day to reach my goals. Great video!
That's wicked, keep it up!
@@thejohnfish no! But is Calesthenics even recognised?
how is Calisthenics unpopular?
liema. It definitely was 3 years ago
same dude!
9:56 thank you very much for that! My passion is writing and at my school in Europe we don’t have any programs for anything. So I figured, maybe I could convince my principal to do a school newspaper and then organise it! Yes, people will find it weird cause nobody here does such thing. But that doesn’t matter, right?
So wish me luck it works!! (especially with Corona and all)
Good luck to you! :))

This video really changed my perspective on getting into university and reassured my passion
Could you do a video about how to find your passion? I feel like I'm really struggling with finding mine.
And I'm in my last year of school and I feel like I'm running out of time
all.in.or.nothing _ Try new things. Do things that you dont normally try or think you dont like. Go to summer camps where you can try new things in an environment where you wont be judged.
Dude same. And people always say. Try new things but sometimes u dont have time to like me
I heard another harvard grad say that if you're struggling to find your passion, think of anything in the last two years that has made you happy. More importantly, think of why it made you happy. Maybe you made your friend a gift, but you realized the fun part wasn't giving it to your friend, but actually making the gift itself. It could mean that you might potentially have a passion for making products for people to buy. Just try to think about it and you'll find that you have a lot of potential passions :)
lol
How have you been mate?? I curious abt your condition rn
Good advice abt Harvard! Be academically qualified, have a passion and hope to get lucky!
Out of all the videos i watched, even though this video had the least tips, for some reason it felt the most helpful. I understood what he was saying and really found the things to improve my chances of getting into harvard
Is it true u can't get into Harvard with a 59 in calculus? Asking for a friend.
i think you could do it tbh
I love jokes

You are incredible!! I am sure you will change the world. I am so proud that in our generation there are such a brialliant people and you are not the only one.
Hey John, i just wanted to thank you for this awesome video, it motivated me a lot and somehow gave me a Push since i nearly lost my goals. Greetings from Germany!
You just clarified a very important thing... And that is
"it is not the college you get into it, it's passion..… ♥️"
I really like this video, because the more John explains about how to get into Harvard is seeing what a hiring manager is looking for in a candidate, all the typical questions are u passionate about this? do u have what it takes to work in this company? etc etc.. so its more or less the same what hiring managers look for in a candidate is like what harvard or any other ivy league school looks for when someone applies to their school so they both have a lot correlation to each other.
I loved the “right?” all through the video.
Sometimes the hardest thing is passions. I mean, I have what I'm going to count as five passions and, as school ramps up, it becomes harder to balance these passions in a realistic way as well... but incredible advice.
It's that what I would love is the feeling of being at Harvard, meeting people, listening to their classes, then I love other things like science, but it is precisely knowing that there is a place Where only people who have passions and work hard get in, the feeling of being a part of it is the reason why I like Harvard, as I said later I have other passions but that's the reason why I want to enter. And most importantly, not only to enter but to be able to study everything that I like with good teachers in a good place
I'm not interest in harvard or in things line that, and i don't know how i discover your channel but, i saw this video and i wanna cry. I asking my self, where did go my passion? When i was a kid, i used to have a lot of passion, but now, I'm falling in depression. I love the passion that you have, you really inspires me with your words. :"(💕

This is really inspiring and I think I would have more chances to get into Harvard if surrounded by ppl like you
this is the best motivational REAL speech .. respect for that.. u r true indeed :) keep going man. wish u the best
I just saw this video but this is super inspiring although I’m just a high schooler I’m glad to hear this for future terms when applying to schools.
Ive always been told not to use the word "passion" in your essays because schools constantly see that...?
i would not use the word "passion," but instead just write about it. Like it John's example, write about writing and how it makes you feel, but dont use the general word "passion"
faith destiny
If you use the word “passion”,the people reading your application will feel like you’re trying too hard to make yourself seem passionate.
You need to tell about your passion in a subtle way.Dont say directly that this ** is my passion.Tell about it by talking about it and your experiences around that topic.
Bro u r just inspiring never stop!
big respect from Egypt💟🤜🤛
My #1 passion is music. I'm not trying to be egotistical, but I'm in the top 20 trombone players in New York State as a freshman. But, I don't want to go to college for music. Is this passion still applicable, or is it irrelevant for the acceptance into an ivy school?
Firelizard I think it is applicable and you may have a very good chance of getting in
I think there may be a few classes in college that allow you to play instruments. But if that doesnt work all I cant tell you good luck. (Btw I think you can do this online and just try to just do your own thing)
This makes me so happy and motivated 💛
You are really inspiring. I love your videos !!! I think this is the most straightforward thing anybody or a UA-camr has adviced to me to get into college.
Procrastination is my biggest passion does that count?
This is worth gold! congratulations
Me in 7th grade with the pasion for coding and coding 3 years by now: add to list "Watch later"
"Passion is aaahh it's crazy but I LOVE it."
Be the best you can be
Thank you for opening up so much! I really resonate with this!
In a school where my class is 166 people, top 1% is literally 1-2 people. So valedictorian or salutatorian. And in a school where we don't have a class ranking, no one knows who the top people are.
Thank you so much, John. Much appreciated.
I hope I get into Harvard. Decisions are on 12th Dec 2020.
THANK YOU FOR BEING HONEST
I'm no doubt this is one of the best videos of How To Get Into ***.
This video was so awesome!! thanks a lot, very informative
This is of course useless for me because I've already ended up and am nearing completion of a so-so state college. But nonetheless, it is useful to see if I _could_ have gotten in and whether I made a bad choice in not even trying, and so I end up with:
1. SATs - 1370, but based on trying some practice tests afterward think I could have gotten 1400+ if I had not gotten so anxious as I'd NEVER taken a test before in my entire life. Nonetheless, it's not a 1500.
2. Passion - There were things I liked over the very long term consistently (esp. maths and computer programming), but I never had the GRIT to put in hours of GRIND when you DON'T feel like doing something. It was more I'd always keep coming back, some days I'd put hours, some days I'd do nothing, some days a little. There's literally nothing in my life where I ever consistently spent at least one hour per day doing, from intrinsic motivation, each day, every day, consistently, with discipline, structure, and method. (Likely that sacrificed SAT points, too, esp. on English, no consistent studying. I learned a fair bit, probably more than average, but by very inconsistent, dragged-out method over my lifetime with home and self-schooling.) 6:12 - That's exactly the mentality I have _NEVER_ experienced with regard to _anything_ - nothing where I could put aside things that were more interesting _at that time_ for. I've jsut never had it. For _anything_ . (Well with one interesting exception for which I'm not sure it counts as one below)
3. "Interesting" - I know for sure I'm definitely NOT interesting at all. I did not achieve anything worthy of the news (see above about seriously lacking in grit), was insulted/bullied a ton over the interwebs (oddly enough I had the most "grit" in just trying to argue for hours and hours uselessly at debating them to try and prove them wrong as they kept bullying me, not about anything constructive toward learning or improving one's skills and abilities), failed socialization when younger as a kid due to mental disorders and other issues. Whole life was spent behind a computer screen, more or less. Mental disorders I think also helped impair grit - you really don't want to do any gruntwork when Mr. OCD makes it 10x MORE "grunty" by jam-packing it full of a shitload of useless ritual movements just to assuage all its fears and threats. You want to slack on that because you want to avoid the awful useless, pointless movements. Would not be able to hold conversation on _arbitrary_ topic due to a) lack of socialization b) no care at all for pop culture c) no thorough, disciplined studying to learn a lot of things in detail due to issues mentioned here and in point 2. (Regarding the online debates, I think the reason I was able to persist at that is precisely because the OCD actually drove me to keep going back to it over and over and moreover it didn't get turned by it into things that seemed as "useless" and boring as, say, backspacing and retyping the same 10 lines of computer code over and over again dozens of times just to assuage its insane demands. I could never put those aside for other things. Could not put things aside - for ANYTHING else than this, and perhaps you could argue that's a "passion" but it was actually emotionally painful, and moreover, it did not result in well-rounded, but very unbalanced, learning instead.)
Also, while I agree that passion is, in theory, a good motivation, I don't think "being interesting" is a motivation I particularly care about. That's to me called "live your life for other people" and "be what everybody else wants" and "be a good little SOCIETY PERSON", which I think is stupid. I more care about doing something because it's useful or beneficial, if/when I can manage to muster that.
So no, and I probably should not have even bothered Now the question is: does this failure to have gotten into Harvard or something of similar calibre irretrievably limit, in a significant way, future life possibilities, or is there a way to make up for that? I am now 28 years old.
great and honest reflection ,, life is honestly what u make it . wish u the best chief thanks for the advice
Waw this really spoke to me the world needs to be filled with people like him, would be a better place to live in don't u think? Anyways I definitely would love to get into harvard because harvard am I right but besides that what better place to explore possibilities that will be reassuring your future I have a passion and that is music since day one I've been writing my own songs and playing the piano and I hope that I'll graduate high school with the pride of getting accepted into my dream school because of my passion and hard work.
mentality at the top 1%
anyone notice in the thumnail, he wear a shirt with the number "2021" when this was made in 2017 ? Maybe he changed the thumnail in 2021
frankly speaking, getting into Harvard is a piece of cake compared to getting into IIT being in OPEN caste. Harvard is a safety school for us. for Indians that is. lol
I realized that as well every one that has gotten in to an Ivy League school has some type of passion. But I don’t know what my passion is.
I would like to point out and perhaps even get into detail about one of your points.
Pursuing my passion is what allowed me to travel over the world.
This goes much deeper than that obviously. Because you followed your passion you got into various high standard competitions for you to be able to travel across the world in the first place.
What I believe is that Ivy league universities want(I could be wrong dont take my word for it, after all im just 15..) people who will become successful. The most efficient way to prove that you will become a successful human in the future is looking at the past achievements. However If you are doing something at a very high competitive level (i.e IMO) you probably like what you are doing and perhaps if you first started doing it just to get into a high standard college, later on you will probably develop a strong liking to the subject. Consequently meaning that if you have gotten really good at what you were practicing you probably liked practice since it's natural for someone to stop doing what they are because they don't like it and pick up something they do like.
I also believe that another quality that you must possess to get through admissions in top level universities, is that you must not quit. Every person should learn from their past failures, not fall down from them. (i.e. lets say someone couldn't win on their first competition but later on they practice and they get up and win the so dreamed trophies. This is what will make you a high quality, not only student, but also person.)
when he said luck, my heart sank
Thank you for sharing
He looks so much better compared to 2020 :)
Presently I am in grade 10th and I have very good academics and I am passionate about coding. From now what should be my approach to make my profile competitive?

hey....hi john....ur video seems...quite informative......the only question that pops my mind.....do they consider social service as a form of passion too?
well since my childhood...i was quite intrested in understanding world politics and public issues.....and was quite dedicated in law...so as a part of which i joined up several community services ...where i interact with amazing ppl...try nd understand their problem ....solve their issues....just make them privileged to be a part of community....i love serving people and this is what my passion is.......
irrespective of whether i get in to an ivy school or not
I have done a lot of research but I've always heard people say that you should be well rounded. That is what really stresses me out because I focus on only a few things but some people are able to master all types of skills. Would you please help me out on this? Is it important to focus on just a few passions or do as many activities as you can?
Definitely pick a few passions to focus the vast majority of your energy on, but don't neglect other areas of your life. You should be involved in sports, arts, extracurriculars, but you don't need to excel at all of them--you just need to excel at one thing that you put your energy into.
For example, I stayed involved in a variety of clubs throughout my high school career but chose not to take many leadership roles in them because I knew it would take up time that I would otherwise dedicate to training or school. In that way, I stayed well-rounded without spreading myself too thinly. I hope that helps!
+John Fish Thank you!! It really helped. Good Luck for Harvard!
There is a saying by Bruce lee I don’t fear the man who has practiced 1000 Of kicks one time but I do fear the man who has practiced one kick thousand of times . What I want to say here is ivy leagues or colleges look for people who are passionate in a few things not in everything because if you are passionate about everything you will not be able to fouchs on one thing and make a difference. Try dropping down a few co scholastic and focus on those that make you want to get out of bed every day.
Bambi 591 wow, thank you for the insight!
Whattt. All i hear is that u have to be pointy and have like 1 thing ur amazing at or a few
Well, whether you have a passion or not (coupled with test scores and grades), for most people (e.g., middle class, etc.) the chances of getting in are next to nil if they aren't a legacy, an athlete, a minority, a few first gen / economically disadvantaged folks, big money donor kids or an international student. After accounting for those categories, precious few spots are left over. Sounds like you fit the athlete profile. Congrats however.
Harvard is my dream school but I’m dumb so there goes that

I finished my 10 grade. I've been a fairly good student academically, but 9th grade was a bit messed up for me. I was chosen as the school president by the school board. I've always wanted to help people, my grandpa died when I was about to finish my 9th grade, I felt really Powerless. I'm passionate about being a strong Version of myself and helping people because I was bullied for 8 years. Harvard has always been my dream University, I've already thought about what major I would take and my future how it would lead to me doing something for the people. But I don't really know if my passion of helping people and being a stronger version of myself would get me in.. I want to take up biology as my major and then complete my MD/MBA course from harvard medical school. It would really help you replied about what I should do now..
Did you get in?
beautiful video!!! it was different! thanks a lot!!
You're that guy from Breakthrough Junior challenge, liked your vid
John, do you think that my passion has to be related to school? I have considered entering independent poetry competitions and, if possible, becoming politically involved in my community through either public speaking or writing. I'm entering high school this upcoming year, and I think that my academics are in the 1% (1510 SAT in 8th grade year). However, I feel that independent accomplishments won't be enough. Do you think that it would be more effective if I tried to succeed through areas such as clubs and athletics that are linked to school instead of relying on independent speaking? Which do you think would look better on a resume?
Independent accomplishments are definitely good enough, but stay involved in your school. Don't worry about what "looks good on a resume", just be yourself and do what you love and what inspires you.
Do you think Yale is just as good???

Hey, I can't quite visualize the top 1% concept as in India, we have really high scores and the Top 1% would be just insanely high and beyond many students' capabilities. (Level of Achievement: you will be granted an award from the president of the country if you score the highest score- a 99%)
What if your passion is academics? Will Harvard recognize that? It's not my fault I'm more interested in academics than sports or music, and it seems twisted that I have to alter it simply because it makes me "too academic for Harvard"
Write blogs, scientific papers. If you're in science, be a part of a science club, etc.
