I can feel the absolute sincerity and desperation from Shaw in this scene. She truly doesn't want to ask Janek to do this but there's no other way... Janek knows it as well and doesn't hesitate to do what must be done. Probably my favorite scene in the film.
This is why I miss Elizabeth Shaw, she wasn't just a survivor like Ripley, she knew the difference between right and wrong-like Captain Janek, obviously, and his crew. She sacrificed her only chance at surviving that world-or so she must have believed-to save Earth and the entire human race from utter destruction. It's still just wrong that she was killed off-screen between "Prometheus" and "Covenant".
Hadder Yuri Fox should at least bring back Shaw as a clone, like Ripley. I agree - Shaw rocked! Even after her husband was killed, and she survived carrying one of those hybrids inside her, she still got it together, and executed a plan to take that death to the Engineers’ home world (even if pieces of David had plotted this in his twisted Synthetic brain...... Shaw Rocked!!!!!!!
Ripley always will be the top, a survivor and a hero, in alien 3 she throws to the foundry to prevent the birth of the alien queen and the company weyland-yutani took advantage of that although she knew clearly that doing it meant sacrificing her life but she knew that she would save humanity and all life on the planet earth... :D
@@andressorribes5652I agree, actually, but poor Shaw set the standard decades before Ripley was even born and paid a price worse than we can imagine to do the right thing. Ripley died and was Cloned, yes, which brought the Xenomorphs back with her, 200 years later, but while her memory was intact that wasn't the original Ripley, not really. Both of them died horribly to save the entire human race. Both of them deserved so much better...
Both of them had so many flaws. But one movie had one scene that wins it for me and that is the Covenant. I'm of course talking about the medbay scene. That scene was so freaking awesome than what we got in Prometheus and Covenant after the medbay.
The thing is people wanted "Aliens" from Prometheus. So with Covenant they gave them another shitty aliens movie. But at that point we all wanted the mystery of the Engineers. Instead of another shitty horror movie with David being a twat. : I

@@jasonread5017 Beautiful cinematography, powerful soundtrack. It's a sci-fi film that does not have any aliens in it! Some people take issue over the change in direction in the third act, but the first two acts are so well written that it more than makes up for the change in tone in the third act. And Chris Evans is excellent in this film. His performance is on par with his work in the film Snowpiercer.
As much as I like Ravel's "pay me on the other side" line (and just about everything else in this scene), I think Chance's reaction hits the hardest. What I found interesting was when the Engineer entered the life-pod, probably unaware Shaw survived. Whether as to gather information or more likely to see what induced the Humans to sacrifice themselves in what was ultimately in the eyes of the Engineer a futile attempt at stopping him. One of those “maybe Humans deserve another chance” moments. At least until Shaw attacked him 😂
@@Waroftheworldszthere was so much cut from this which would have made them more interesting. This wasn't a perfect film, but I get what he was trying to do. He should have continued the idea with the sequels, instead of doing covenant. For this story to grow, it needs to move beyond the xenomorph, quite frankly. Delving into the whole engineer civilization and the larger questions would be much cooler. But it would take an overall long-term vision.
Check out the cut content from Prometheus that never made it to theatre. As well as the stuff cut from the scripts. This film had the potential to being legendary and I think that it deserves a re-make with all of the cut content added back in.

@The Feeling Is Mutual Not sure where you got that. She wanted to be in the film, but was written out by Ridley Scott. In the original draft, she was to have a minor supporting role...that she was hiding in the catacombs of the alien city. She was to come out at the end to help the Covenant crew escape. Scott has said that he wanted to instead focus on David and cater to the fans demands for more xenomorphs. So he wrote Noomi out. After production and during re-shoots, he wrote the new part for Noomi...the online only prologue for the movie. She said she was happy to come in for the scenes and would have actually had a hard time playing a larger role, since she was pretty beaten up from filming Unlocked.

I will never get over their sudden willingness to sacrifice themselves in the name of saving earth from what could mean certain death. Beautiful scene Edit: y’all let me sit here with a typo all this time 😫😂
That was stupid. Why sacrifice the ship? Signal or follow. That 1 ship ever getting near earth is highly unlikely. Even if they didn't signal ahead that ship will be met with an Armada several times. If a corporation can send a ship to another star system. IMAGINE what governments can do? It's like Apple vs all the world in ship deployment.
Also the closer the ship got to Earth the more the web would thicken. Meaning the more force it would encounter. Since earth and all governments would have years to prepare.
Yes defo. I watch this movie nearly every month and i still enjoy it ever y time. One of my favourite films ever. Wish covenant had followed on with the engineer's story instead of David and the neomorphs..

Probably the engineers had the technology to spread the poison silently on earth once they got there (just a theory), shaw wouldn't take chances with the people on earth about this (politics basically) and stopping the issue at the source was the best bet.
They never established that the Prometheus had faster than light communication with earth or that they could outrun the engineer I think the Nostromo was capable of ftl communication but that ship was a lot larger than the Prometheus
Rhysio Eren yes you can, theoretically it’s “warp”. While currently (proven) a Tachyon is a particle that travels faster than light. A black hole’s gravitational pull is faster than light.
That captain has less than 5 minutes of dialogue and share more feelings and emotions with him than any other character in this film. Movie should have been about him instead -.-
This was suppose to be about the engineers. We all know and seen the previous Alien films so we wanted to see more of this world not more of the aliens.
This is where you are wrong... the only reason they shifted focus from the original script which was heavily dealing with the engineers was because fans were foaming at the mouth like degenerates when they didn't get that fucking outdated boomer xenomorph enough screen time. Only later fans realized "oh we have fuck ton of movies already with this 80s crap alien, maybe we should really explore the INTERESTING thing which is the engineers" but we already lost 2 movies for this stupid fan base, let's hope the 3rd movie is the charm.
On the contrary it was overhyped by the marketing department. Don't forget all of those online videos and commercials showing us how Weyland got the crew in the ship, not to mention how the company sold us the David model line. Fast foward to teh time of release and everyone knew that the movie was really bad. Great visuals and music but the plot itself and most of the characters were a waste of screen time. And for the record I DO LIKE the film, but it is by no means an underrated movie nor a good alien prequel.
Fury161 oh ok didn’t know that. Anyways in my opinion I found it very interesting movie. It should’ve expanded until revealing the real origin of the Aliens. But Covenant was such a disappointment. It felt very rushed. The only reason I felt like it was underrated is because from what I know, Ridley had to change the sequel based on people not liking Prometheus.
@@officialrvelasco I understand your point. But most people didn't liked prometheus because instead of being a direct prequel to Alien, it was a spin-off-ish thing. Not to mention that the 'space truckers' of the Nostromo were more competent and professional than the scientists of the Prometheus. What Ridley did in Covenant was the final nail in the coffin. Ugly, ugly film.
@@PointReflex It's not surprising that the crew of the _Nostromo_ were more competent though. They were only interested in getting home. There was nobody like Shaw with a religious belief that what was in there was their creator that had _invited_ them to come, and nobody like Weyland, desperate to get answers before he kicked the bucket. Shaw is similar to Ripley as far as courage and toughness goes, but Ripley was cautious and rational. Ripley would have looked at those cave paintings, realised they were painted by tribal humans witnessing an invitation of their own time, not an invitation left by Engineers for future humans. She would have been curious as to whether the trips were taking tribal humans away and for what purpose. She would not have considered it a good idea to just land, and roll right in as if there was a pleasant welcome for the Prodigal Son. Also, the crew of the _Nostromo_ were hired in a normal fashion, and had been with the company a long time, and knew how to work together. The crew of the _Prometheus_ was a "Ship of Fools". They signed up for a mission knowing nothing but the pay, and got their first briefing 28 months after they'd launched. Shaw is a fanatic who is 100% certain of her conclusions, based on cherry picked evidence, because of what she 'chooses to believe' . Holloway is a moron, Weyland is dying, desperate and ruthless. David and Ford are working Weylands agenda while Shaw doesn't keep control of the mission. Ripley took command when Dallas died, and she made good decisions, and kept everyone focussed on one agenda. They only had one crew member working to a different agenda of course, Ash. Covenant was even more stupid, I agree.
@@sonofdragon5530 umm he didn't tho ? Lmao someone else is directing the new movie and Ridley Scott has only made one good movie in the last 15 years - The Martian And now he's doing a Gladiator 2 which will likely be fkn awful 😂

I just pretend that Covenant never existed. "Dropped the ball" is too kind for what they did with Shaw, a great character with a very interesting quest, all thrown into the garbage bin. But as far as I know, the public had a part in this, because there was too much pressure for Covenant turning into an Alien movie instead of Prometheus 2.
Although I don't like this movie, I gotta admit, I love this scene. Idris Elba sings the CSNY song "Love the one you're with" throughout the whole movie. His character wasn't striving to conquer foreign lands, to be a voyager and a cornerstone of the vast unknown, he just loved what he was doing, he loved the one he was with: Prometheus.
Imagine what Ridley Scott could've done had the studio not decided to go with Katherine Waterston. Everybody loved Noomi Rapace. We all blamed Ridley Scott for killing off Shaw, myself included, but it was the studio all along.
It's not too late to make Alien: Covenant a nightmare-sequence that Shaw had, since she fell asleep in the beginning of Covenant - Shaw can still be in the real sequel to Prometheus - it is called Paradise Lost.

THIS! selfless sacrifice for the entire human race, planet etc is so rarely done right..
The fact that they just killed her off pissed me off so much! She was a cool character.
Ripley always will be the top, a survivor and a hero, in alien 3 she

@@andressorribes5652I agree, actually, but poor Shaw set the standard decades before Ripley was even born and paid a price worse than we can imagine to do the right thing. Ripley died and was Cloned, yes, which brought the Xenomorphs back with her, 200 years later, but while her memory was intact that wasn't the original Ripley, not really. Both of them died horribly to save the entire human race. Both of them deserved so much better...

Brilliant post this is exactly it. Don't forget Janek already knew the Engineers were hostile. Shaw just confirmed it.
What I found interesting was when the Engineer entered the life-pod, probably unaware Shaw survived.

This movie was underrated

Janek and his boys are absolute badasses
Imagine what Ridley Scott could've done had the studio not decided to go with Katherine Waterston. Everybody loved Noomi Rapace. We all blamed Ridley Scott for killing off Shaw, myself included, but it was the studio all along.
