For me what hits the hardest is at 0:28 after the captain says "this is not a warship". The response of "I know.. I know..." is delivered so well just from her tone. I can feel her emotion for what she is truly asking.
@StewBedazzle it seems an odd issue of IP rights to the 'Alien' franchise being as restrictive as it is. And it's bad enough RIdley Scott can't keep his paws off it even though he hasn't really contributed to it in any meaningful way since abandoning the prometheus story. If you ask me, he should have passed the torch to Neil Blomkamp back when he was all set to do a proper sequel to 'Aliens'. It's the timeline i wish we were part of lol.
@StewBedazzle Right? An Aliens sequel featuring an older ripley and hicks, with Neil's unique gritty approach to special effects (and aliens for that matter) , it was a dream haha.
Yes! Finally! I totally agree the potential for an amazing story to be told was totally wasted. I just pretend that that movie never hapoend and Elizabeth at least found some kind of peace.
Utterly stupid sacrifice. Captain and crew are idiots. Dumbest Captain ever. No Captain of a ship would be that stupid 😅. Sacrifice an Interstellar ship on the advice of an hysterical women? Not tactically sound or reasonable given the circumstances. If a corporation can fund a ship that can travel to the stars. Imagine what governments can do? What hope would one ship have against a military from all the space faring countries from earth? The ship would have been met with an armada light years from earth. A type 2 civilization armada. No hope of it winning. Say it defeats that armada. A more advance Armada will meet it the next time. For the scientist and military strategist will have accessed it strength and weaknesses. And will come with a more advance ships. This pattern will just repeat until it is defeated. Now the defenders are just as strong as you. Now earth will be on the attack. Remember a type 2 civilization like in this film is damn near impossible to defeat.
To be sure, the captain had already surmised that those vessels of black ooze were some kind of "weapon of mass destruction" - - and promised Shaw it would never get back to Earth
Janek already had a pretty good idea of what the pale dudes were doing in there and besides, all of the crew (that was still alive) saw how "friendly" those things were to humans.
@@drott150 lol what an inane reply and supposition. I enjoyed the characters they portrayed, which all 3 parts I might add were supporting roles. And incidentally one of the co-pilot characters I was referring to is white.
He had other lines... like before the mission briefing the pilots are speculating about what the job is. It's important because it tells us what kind of crew we're dealing with, the type who sign up for a multi year mission without knowing what the job actually is, only what it pays. This explains their lack of caution and poor attitude to doing things properly.
I love the symbolism of the hands outstretched as the three men sacrifice themselves to save humanity. Ironically the Engineers who believe in sacrifice and creation through destruction, would probably applaud Janek's fortitude over the obsessive pursuit of immortality by Weyland.
Earth would be destroyed anyway becaurse of the execution of jesus (the original intent of the movie and also in script) - the enginerer took the child to their place and teached him how to be and returned him where he became known as jesus - the enginerer says that to David (but not sure if they had thar part still in the final shooting script) - that's why the film is still focused on religion
@@michaelorosz272the line is "hands off". It's symbolic of the crew surrendering to their fate, not as a consequence of external, divine forces, but their own decisions and circumstances. They could avoid the collision by maneuvering. They take their hands off the controls to show they are committed to their course of action, and won't avoid the collision, and their subsequent deaths, because it is a necessary consequence of their choices.
This is why I miss Elizabeth Shaw, she wasn't just a survivor like Ripley, she knew the difference between right and wrong-like Captain Janek, obviously, and his crew. She sacrificed her only chance at surviving that world-or so she must have believed-to save Earth and the entire human race from utter destruction. It's still just wrong that she was killed off-screen between "Prometheus" and "Covenant".
Hadder Yuri Fox should at least bring back Shaw as a clone, like Ripley. I agree - Shaw rocked! Even after her husband was killed, and she survived carrying one of those hybrids inside her, she still got it together, and executed a plan to take that death to the Engineers’ home world (even if pieces of David had plotted this in his twisted Synthetic brain...... Shaw Rocked!!!!!!!
Ripley always will be the top, a survivor and a hero, in alien 3 she throws to the foundry to prevent the birth of the alien queen and the company weyland-yutani took advantage of that although she knew clearly that doing it meant sacrificing her life but she knew that she would save humanity and all life on the planet earth... :D
@@andressorribes5652I agree, actually, but poor Shaw set the standard decades before Ripley was even born and paid a price worse than we can imagine to do the right thing. Ripley died and was Cloned, yes, which brought the Xenomorphs back with her, 200 years later, but while her memory was intact that wasn't the original Ripley, not really. Both of them died horribly to save the entire human race. Both of them deserved so much better...
Both of them had so many flaws. But one movie had one scene that wins it for me and that is the Covenant. I'm of course talking about the medbay scene. That scene was so freaking awesome than what we got in Prometheus and Covenant after the medbay.
The thing is people wanted "Aliens" from Prometheus. So with Covenant they gave them another shitty aliens movie. But at that point we all wanted the mystery of the Engineers. Instead of another shitty horror movie with David being a twat. : I
Like the scene running away from the crashing ship. The cave drawings of Pleiades, the constellation symbol of destruction and rebirth. The whole show is about creation, destruction, and rebirth. The big cycle.
I can feel the absolute sincerity and desperation from Shaw in this scene. She truly doesn't want to ask Janek to do this but there's no other way... Janek knows it as well and doesn't hesitate to do what must be done. Probably my favorite scene in the film.
When you finally get your car out of long-term storage, and some idiot with an ion propulsion system dings your fender on your way out of the parking lot...
Extraordinary how far Benedict Wong has come! He used to live close to us when he lived in London. I first met him in 2013 when he performed at our local theatre in Hampstead. Such a wonderful, kind man!! He invited us to go and visit him at his home in California. Hopefully soon !!
missmommy185 why did dr Shaw wanted them to crash the ship? Was the engineer on his way to earth to use the bio weapon that David later use on the covenant?
Except for the fact that the engineers ship wasn’t even scratched after the collision. Maybe they just got lucky and the engine cut off switch was in the spot they hit.
The part that seals the deal and creates horrific anxiety at the same time is when she says, "Janek...if you don't stop it...there won't be any home to go back to. It's...it's carrying death and it's headed for Earth." Imagine you're Janek and you hear that. All of those billions of people's lives hang in the balance on a decision YOU have to make and have only a minute or two to carry out which will kill you in the process. Wowzers
What I found interesting was when the Engineer entered the life-pod, probably unaware Shaw survived. Whether as to gather information or more likely to see what induced the Humans to sacrifice themselves in what was ultimately in the eyes of the Engineer a futile attempt at stopping him. One of those “maybe Humans deserve another chance” moments. At least until Shaw attacked him 😂
@@Waroftheworldszthere was so much cut from this which would have made them more interesting. There was a scene where she's hiding in the private quarters and David is filling her head with lies about the Engineer but at first he stops and looks at the screens playing music and he seems moved. Perhaps reconsidering his decision..out of them all he seemed taken with Shaw so wants to talk with her but because of David's lies she backs away holding an axe. He tries to console Shaw and explain but she doesn't understand. In desperation she presses the door and the rest follows as in the cut.
@@TheWPhilosopher David doesn't fill Shaw's head with lies - he simply tells her that the engineer is coming for her. And the engineer doesn't try to console her.
Loyal crewmember: "We're with you to the end, Captain." Loyal friend: "With all due respect captain you're a shit pilot and you're gonna need all the help you can get."
This wasn't a perfect film, but I get what he was trying to do. He should have continued the idea with the sequels, instead of doing covenant. For this story to grow, it needs to move beyond the xenomorph, quite frankly. Delving into the whole engineer civilization and the larger questions would be much cooler. But it would take an overall long-term vision.
Check out the cut content from Prometheus that never made it to theatre. As well as the stuff cut from the scripts. This film had the potential to being legendary and I think that it deserves a re-make with all of the cut content added back in.
I'd bet money that there was studio interference. I personally don't hate Covenant, but it does feel like there were people pressuring Scott into hurrying up and getting the Xenomorphs back into the story.
“With all due respect Captain, you’re a sh!! pilot, and you’ll need all the help you can get.....” Now that’s a courageous and selfless command crew! Godspeed!
If you think that Engineer was pissed off already when he ripped off David’s head, that impact that knocked his “superior” craft out of the sky........
Yeah as cool as this is to witness, I didn't find it very believable. If they were soldiers following orders, maybe, but 3 essentially civilians being told by a screaming woman that they need to sacrifice their lives and ship right now and all coming to an agreement over that purpose in less than a minute? People only do that if they believe someone without question. What reason do they have to believe Shaw is right, even if she believes she is?
As much as I like Ravel's "pay me on the other side" line (and just about everything else in this scene), I think Chance's reaction hits the hardest. You can already see him thinking in 1:11 and the uncertainty on his face at 1:31 despite the smile. He goes through with it but you can tell he's still processing the fact he's about to die. Hits harder at the end when he's the only one with his eyes shut :(
That's why we have to believe in Christ and God. It'll make it 110% more accepting in a situation like this. No doubts that the other side won't give you a chance of internal peace forever and ever.

@@jasonread5017 Beautiful cinematography, powerful soundtrack. It's a sci-fi film that does not have any aliens in it! Some people take issue over the change in direction in the third act, but the first two acts are so well written that it more than makes up for the change in tone in the third act. And Chris Evans is excellent in this film. His performance is on par with his work in the film Snowpiercer.
@@tovsteh No, the goo is only a recombinant factor. Life must exist. This is why the engineer sacrificed himself at the beginning of the film...so his DNA would be combined with the existing life on the 'target' world.
I will never get over their sudden willingness to sacrifice themselves in the name of saving earth from what could mean certain death. Beautiful scene Edit: y’all let me sit here with a typo all this time 😫😂
That was stupid. Why sacrifice the ship? Signal or follow. That 1 ship ever getting near earth is highly unlikely. Even if they didn't signal ahead that ship will be met with an Armada several times. If a corporation can send a ship to another star system. IMAGINE what governments can do? It's like Apple vs all the world in ship deployment.
Also the closer the ship got to Earth the more the web would thicken. Meaning the more force it would encounter. Since earth and all governments would have years to prepare.
Damn. That's such a badasd way to go out. Saving the world, charging head long into a superior opponent. If that doesn't impress that giant albino alien, nothing will lol. Love this movie!
There's nothing else they could really do they either let the engineer go away and destroy the earth or they use the ship as a weapons and guide it to crash into the engineer

On the contrary it was overhyped by the marketing department. Don't forget all of those online videos and commercials showing us how Weyland got the crew in the ship, not to mention how the company sold us the David model line. Fast foward to teh time of release and everyone knew that the movie was really bad. Great visuals and music but the plot itself and most of the characters were a waste of screen time. And for the record I DO LIKE the film, but it is by no means an underrated movie nor a good alien prequel.
Fury161 oh ok didn’t know that. Anyways in my opinion I found it very interesting movie. It should’ve expanded until revealing the real origin of the Aliens. But Covenant was such a disappointment. It felt very rushed. The only reason I felt like it was underrated is because from what I know, Ridley had to change the sequel based on people not liking Prometheus.
@@officialrvelasco I understand your point. But most people didn't liked prometheus because instead of being a direct prequel to Alien, it was a spin-off-ish thing. Not to mention that the 'space truckers' of the Nostromo were more competent and professional than the scientists of the Prometheus. What Ridley did in Covenant was the final nail in the coffin. Ugly, ugly film.
@@PointReflex It's not surprising that the crew of the _Nostromo_ were more competent though. They were only interested in getting home. There was nobody like Shaw with a religious belief that what was in there was their creator that had _invited_ them to come, and nobody like Weyland, desperate to get answers before he kicked the bucket. Shaw is similar to Ripley as far as courage and toughness goes, but Ripley was cautious and rational. Ripley would have looked at those cave paintings, realised they were painted by tribal humans witnessing an invitation of their own time, not an invitation left by Engineers for future humans. She would have been curious as to whether the trips were taking tribal humans away and for what purpose. She would not have considered it a good idea to just land, and roll right in as if there was a pleasant welcome for the Prodigal Son. Also, the crew of the _Nostromo_ were hired in a normal fashion, and had been with the company a long time, and knew how to work together. The crew of the _Prometheus_ was a "Ship of Fools". They signed up for a mission knowing nothing but the pay, and got their first briefing 28 months after they'd launched. Shaw is a fanatic who is 100% certain of her conclusions, based on cherry picked evidence, because of what she 'chooses to believe' . Holloway is a moron, Weyland is dying, desperate and ruthless. David and Ford are working Weylands agenda while Shaw doesn't keep control of the mission. Ripley took command when Dallas died, and she made good decisions, and kept everyone focussed on one agenda. They only had one crew member working to a different agenda of course, Ash. Covenant was even more stupid, I agree.
Although I don't like this movie, I gotta admit, I love this scene. Idris Elba sings the CSNY song "Love the one you're with" throughout the whole movie. His character wasn't striving to conquer foreign lands, to be a voyager and a cornerstone of the vast unknown, he just loved what he was doing, he loved the one he was with: Prometheus.
Shaw and the mysterious incomprehensably advanced Engineers were the best of this film. Keeping Shaw as protagonist would've carried on the tradition of the female lead in the Alien franchise. And the magical air of humanity meeting this alien lifeform, that is so closely tied to them, but so so far out of reach in so many aspects. This believable portrayal of humanoid divinity. The black eyes that both look softly familiar and down-to-nature like an animal's and yet so soulless and hollow and dangerously intelligent. It could take your hand or erase you forever. The big question of communication, the vulnerability in human hope and the sick hint of Stockholm Syndrome through religion... The tragic fight of the species. The endless room for metaphors and connections to mythology. THE AMBIGUITY and MYSTERY of it all! It was totally disenchanted in Covenant. One upscaled roman city full of humans with makeup... nothing about them felt alien, incomprehensible or dangerously attracting. From philosophical playground to fantasy props. :(
Very good, you got it, my complaint is the first movie was true to the original vision, the second movie was a mish-mash of that vision and what they thought the fans wanted, in the end no one was happy, and rightfully so.
Agreed on every point. IMO Covenant should be retconned and, if possible, eventually pulled from digital platforms. It was a huge and quite embarrassing mistake. Especially coming from a grown ass writer and director like Scott.
Beautifully said. Humans were rude and indifferent to their creation, the android, but were perplexed when they were treated similarly by their own creators. They were arrogant, "demanding" things from the creators, and insolent when their demands were denied. And Shaw, fought against external and internal(!) obstacle, put her faith to test, survived every peril until she earned her ride to "Paradise" - through hardship to the stars. Then "alien fans" ruined it all with their whining and Ridley, out of spite, destroyed what would have been an epic new storyline.
This movie has a cast of future MCU characters: Janek:Heimdal from Asgard - THOR Shaw:Clea from the dark dimension - Dr. Strange The Co-pilot(asian dude whose name I forgot): Wong - Dr. Strange David:Magneto - X-men(post First Class film continuity) Weyland: killian - Iron Man 3
Yeah just like that they kill themselves. Very realistic. They don’t even bother sending back a signal to earth or chasing after it. Shit, I guess Earth can’t see it coming and shoot it down.
@@HPVideoArchiveI would do it. I believe many others would, too. And it would be the most selfish thing ever. The entire human species' evolutionary will to survive acting through and incarnate in me. How could hesitation even be possible.
@The Feeling Is Mutual Not sure where you got that. She wanted to be in the film, but was written out by Ridley Scott. In the original draft, she was to have a minor supporting role...that she was hiding in the catacombs of the alien city. She was to come out at the end to help the Covenant crew escape. Scott has said that he wanted to instead focus on David and cater to the fans demands for more xenomorphs. So he wrote Noomi out. After production and during re-shoots, he wrote the new part for Noomi...the online only prologue for the movie. She said she was happy to come in for the scenes and would have actually had a hard time playing a larger role, since she was pretty beaten up from filming Unlocked.

Riddly has talent in making "Side" characters so bad ass. Like the German in Gladiator who had almost no lines. The Captain and his crew gave me more of an emotional connection in the 3 minutes of screen time they had then the other characters who had over two hours and made me feel nothing. I wish the story was centralized around them, they were so bad ass!
They actually knew exactly what they were dying for otherwise they wouldn't have done it. She literally tells them 40 seconds earlier in very clear terms what they are dying for.....
They trusted Shaw, they knew that she would never ask them for such a sacrifice unless for a desperate situation. It must have been really hard for her to ask for such a thing but there was no other option, so the captain understood and knew the sacrifice was necessary, no questions asked.

Yeah I say the same thing he dropped the ball on this one. She should have been the next Alien after this one for sure. She is great actress and she sold it.
I just pretend that Covenant never existed. "Dropped the ball" is too kind for what they did with Shaw, a great character with a very interesting quest, all thrown into the garbage bin. But as far as I know, the public had a part in this, because there was too much pressure for Covenant turning into an Alien movie instead of Prometheus 2.
That captain has less than 5 minutes of dialogue and share more feelings and emotions with him than any other character in this film. Movie should have been about him instead -.-
With all its stupid moments I loved the premise of Prometheus. Some other race creating life. Damn I wish they had continued with Shaw's journey to the Alien planet and that could've opened up more opportunities for sequels. I've seen enough of xenomorphs in the Alien series already. David creating the xenomorphs was such a dud.
Some Random Guy Exactly. The Space Jockey in ALIEN was enormous and a different species from the Engineers. What role did the Space Jockey and its kind play in the development of zenomorphs and how did the Engineers fit into all this? But no; Ridley Scott or the corporate bosses had to go off on a tangent and give us garbage in ALIEN 3 and ALIEN RESURRECTION. Crime shame.
Imagine what Ridley Scott could've done had the studio not decided to go with Katherine Waterston. Everybody loved Noomi Rapace. We all blamed Ridley Scott for killing off Shaw, myself included, but it was the studio all along.
It's not too late to make Alien: Covenant a nightmare-sequence that Shaw had, since she fell asleep in the beginning of Covenant - Shaw can still be in the real sequel to Prometheus - it is called Paradise Lost.

@StewBedazzle I was beyond mad that they did her dirty in the sequel (that wasn't really a sequel). I REALLY wanted a proper Prometheus 2.

This is why I miss Elizabeth Shaw, she wasn't just a survivor like Ripley, she knew the difference between right and wrong-like Captain Janek, obviously, and his crew. Very powerful scene about humanity-what/who we are and should be proud off...
Not a lot to be proud of in the USA. When will the next mass shooting of little kids take place? Or at Walmart? Homelessness in the millions. Mental illness abounds on the streets from east coast to west coast. What we have here, sir, is a dying society, and a gov't that is helping it along. Nothing to be proud of here.
"Who do we send on this important mission, sir?" "The most intellectual dissabled folks you can find!"

This movie was underrated
Highly under rated
Very well written, the Engineers fascinate me so much.
Agreed on every point. IMO Covenant should be retconned and, if possible, eventually pulled from digital platforms. It was a huge and quite embarrassing mistake. Especially coming from a grown ass writer and director like Scott.
@dianna k I love the alien too, but it has to come in well placed dosage and context. It got too beastly like a werewolf. :(
Beautifully said.
This movie has a cast of future MCU characters:
Janek:Heimdal from Asgard - THOR
Shaw:Clea from the dark dimension - Dr. Strange
The Co-pilot(asian dude whose name I forgot): Wong - Dr. Strange
David:Magneto - X-men(post First Class film continuity)
Weyland: killian - Iron Man 3
Shaw was a great character.
Yes!
"If you don't stop it, there won't be any home to go back to!"
One of my favorite moments in the film.

They don’t even bother sending back a signal to earth or chasing after it. Shit, I guess Earth can’t see it coming and shoot it down.

Covenant should not have killed Shaw....
Covenant was disappointing. You could see how it was going to end about an hour before it did
The Feeling Is Mutual that’s false. She was on broad coming back. Fox wanted to go in a different direction
That bitch fucked everything up. She was the reason everybody got fucking killed!!! That skank should have been the first person who died!!!

Best scene from the whole movie, watched this movie so many times ; some of scenes and quality of the movie is breathtaking.
In my humble opinion this is the best scene of all the Alien movie s knowing they were sacrificing their lives to save earth gets me everytime
Best sacrifice in a movie ever. Those guys had no idea what they were dying for, but they made right choice.

I don't care what they say, Prometheus is a science-fiction horror classic!

it was ok

Prometheus with the deleted scenes is fantastic... The problem is Covenant that comes after it
That captain has less than 5 minutes of dialogue and share more feelings and emotions with him than any other character in this film. Movie should have been about him instead -.-
Agreed 👍
With all its stupid moments I loved the premise of Prometheus. Some other race creating life. Damn I wish they had continued with Shaw's journey to the Alien planet and that could've opened up more opportunities for sequels. I've seen enough of xenomorphs in the Alien series already.
David creating the xenomorphs was such a dud.
Ridley Scott murdered the two greatest mysteries in the Alien Universe.
The origins of the space jockey and the Xenomorph.
Totally my love affair with the xenomorphs is long dead. The whole David/Walter thing was completely boring and unentertaining
He didnt create the xenomorph, he remixed them from the black goo, he was a DJ, not a creator
Alien was an atheistic universe. Prometheus took a steaming crap all over it.
Janek and his boys are absolute badasses
Imagine what Ridley Scott could've done had the studio not decided to go with Katherine Waterston. Everybody loved Noomi Rapace. We all blamed Ridley Scott for killing off Shaw, myself included, but it was the studio all along.
But he should refuse that so
It's not too late to make Alien: Covenant a nightmare-sequence that Shaw had, since she fell asleep in the beginning of Covenant - Shaw can still be in the real sequel to Prometheus - it is called Paradise Lost.
@@Princess2Warrior Hope so, and pretend Alien Covenent was just a dream Shaw had in hyper-sleep - - wink wink - - Alien 3 to Alien Resurrection(constipation) That bitch Ripley was irrevocably dead at the end of Alien 3, so they cloned her for part 4 :-S
Waterson is very good. But there's no reason to make it a choice of one or the other. It's OK to have multiple female leads.
I fucking love this movie. Brilliant scene
Vickers: You’re crazy!
Janek: No.. I’m necessary.
Hands down of the best movies in the Aliens franchise
Every time people search for immortality in movies, somehow it ends really bad! I guess, we can't make a screenplay where a creator meets humanity and greets us nicely with knowledge of such kind. It wouldn't be fun! 😂
They should just go to Babylon and search 😈 ....1000 year Reich right 🤗
2001. It ended well for Dave Bowman.
If the creator did not kill humanity, at some point humanity will try to kill the creator. That's just our species.
