  • We were thrilled when Toyota brought the Supra sport coupe back, and even more ecstatic to find out it truly delivered the high-performance goods. And much like the original, Toyota has been making regular enhancements to keep the good times rolling. So, time now to hit the track in the updated Supra and update ourselves on all the fun.

The manual variant of this car looks absolutely wonderful. My only complaint about the Supra and its BMW engine (yes, we are still whining about this) is the assumption that it will age like a BMW...which is to say the opposite of what we have come to expect from Toyota. BMWs (and most German cars from the past couple decades) punish the people who fall in love with them by living short, expensive lives, usually failing in needless ways. This is far too cool of a car to have to give it up after 100k miles because the crank bearings weren't spec'd correctly or some sensor fails that requires pulling the whole engine and costs thousands to replace.

    • @dewarkhodern9990

No one fusses and complained at McLaren for asking BMW to borrow their V12 for the McLaren F1 (McLaren first asked Honda and Isuzu for an engine for their McLaren F1 Supercar. Before asking BMW).
And also, it would've costed Toyota a lot of money to create an Inline from scratch. The 2JZ is literally not that different from the 1JZ. And for the record, the 2JZ DID NOT began in the Supra MK4 A80 (Fourth Generation Supra), it first started in the Toyota JZA147(Aristo)/Lexus GS (1JZ didn't start in the MK3 A70 Supra, it started in the Toyota Soarer)

Except that Toyota was heavily involved in the latter stages of development of the B58. The updated timing setup was designed by bmw, and approved for use in their m sport b58, and Toyota simply requested that their b58s have that upgraded timing assembly. I am not talking about the 2021 refresh. I am talking about when the b58 got a mini refresh right before the Supra, which included the newer timing setup (n54 and n55 style instead of b48, makes sense as the b48 had a setup which made it more compact for front wheel drive.)

People who fuss on the MK5 A90/J29 Supra and compare it to the MK4 A80 Supra (Fourth Generation Supra), needs to realize that the MK4 A80 Supra was literally a flop in sales while on the dealership market for over nine years ! Plus criticized by the public for being too different to the MK3 A70 Supra (the Third Generation Supra).
And was not all that as a Performer while stock(A C4 "base" Corvette of the 1990s literally gave the Turbocharged version RZ Supra A80 MK4 a run for its money and costed a few thousands less than the MK4 A80 Supra RZ).
And for the record, people fuss on Toyota "not using their own engine" or "not making a new JZ engine" when it would've costed Toyota to make a new engine for the Supra from scratch/0. And the JZ engines such as the 2JZ/1JZ didn't start in the Supras....the 2JZ first started in the Toyota JZA147(Aristo)/Lexus GS. Not the Supra MK4 A80.
While the 1JZ first started in the Toyota Soarer. Not the Supra MK3 A70.
And literally the MK4 Supra A80 started from the Lexus SC 400/300 Coupe(the SC 400 has the V8 1UZ while the SC 300 had the 2JZ series engine LONG before the Supra MK4 A80 existed from the SC 400/300).

My issue with the car; it's not a supra. It's not a 2+2, there's no sunroof/removable roof. It's not a GT. For a small fixed roof sports car experience, I would just rather get a 6th gen Camaro which does everything the supra does better. For way less money. Or a m2, which feels more like a supra to me with it's 2+2 seating, longer wheelbase and it's similarly priced.
