    Great video!
    If anyone planning on getting a flail mower and thinking about getting an offset, I strongly suggest getting the offset and not settling for a side shift. I regret not getting an offset.
    Hammers should last years on lighter brush like what is shown in the video. I learned to run two out of the four drive belts on mine because I kept getting 4”-6” diameter sticks stuck in mine. It’ll smoke the belts in a hurry if you’re not hitting the pto quick.
    We used red loctite 271 and/or Nord Lock wedge-type lock washers and/or steel crimp lock nuts on every fastener on our flail mower, especially the hammers. For the hammer bolts and nuts we completely cover the bolt and nut threads with 271 and use steel crimp lock-nuts. We have around a hundred hours, since we disassembled and reassembled the entire mower, and have not had any bolts come loose but we still check them often. Before we disassembled and reassembled everything we constantly had hardware coming loose.

      FUN FACT: I replaced the angle iron guard by the roller with 3/16" angle iron...well, it worked loose with all of my abuse, and the mower twisted it up like a pretzel but did NOT damage the mower at all! I'm telling you, I have beat the hell out of this thing and will absolutely buy another when and if I ever do finally destroy this thing!

      @@rednecktech82 I got a knockoff china pto chipper for odd chipping and it's 4" it can definitely handle more depending on the type of wood really struggles with iron bark here in Australia but fresh cut non hardwoods it will chew threw over 5" easy.if you plan on using it more than 1 and done get the auto feeding I didn't and dry hardwoods definitely suck to force feed or they tend to when they get short bounce around get sidewards and pop a shear bolt.

      I live in hardwood's country (Northeast Pa, USA) but realistically I would never chip anything 4" large, I would cut that up and burn it but just to test the machine I would run 4" through it to do a review and post a vid...if and when I can afford one lol. (About $2400 right now.)

      @rednecktech82  Рік тому +2

      Spec'ed out Nova Tractor's chipper shredder is the best deal and I would get the independent one versus PTO just because I think it would apply to more people and my main focus would be to do a review video of it, but then I would also obviously use it around my own property. Another plus is an independent machine would be more maneuverable since I could take it Into the woods on an ATV versus having to try and fit my large tractor into tight places.

    Thanks for this review! I've been looking all over the market. It's obvious that no one makes them here in the US, so we all get to choose our poison. No one has pushed one of these the way you have, and few companies near this price point get good reviews. Your video has helped me make up my mind, and I will be calling Nova soon. It appears they are sold out of the size I want, but maybe they will have some in this spring. Again, thanks.

    Maybe you should do a limbing video with the flail, that should save so time. The flail I used to mow with had the medium weight knives (hammers) on it yours are the heaver type ,not the heaviest I've seen but cast anyway, so it's no wonder why it cut all of that down. The hangers on that are different that's probably why they got loose, I think you'll be able to just sharpen those after they're pretty tough and they bounce off of stuff so they keep going. They're kind of meant to ""break" the grass anyway and work even when rounded off but to each their own. That will be great for ditch lines and around ponds for sure with the off set. Does the still run (cut) when you tilt it?

  • @rickwest4783
    @rickwest4783 8 місяців тому

    Funny . I bought the larger, Heavy duty version of this machine. Biggest difference is mine hsa the 5.5 lbs. hammers.
    Course I probably should have done what you did. a video and review. Unfortunately. I just don't have that kind of time .
    However. I figured it was time for a new flail mower and thought I could save some money with Nova Tractors Heavy Duty mower.
    Weelll, that didn't work out like I'd hoped. The very first job i did with it, worked great. However, the 2nd. job not so much. There are 4 belts which drive the flails, (mower drum). After about 2 hours into the project the 3rd. belt in, not the 1st, 2nd., or 4th. or even 2 or maybe 3 of them, Broke. The next thing that happened on the same job. Same day. The, supposed to be saft shields in the front of the machine, that's supposed to keep stuff from coming at you, 6 of them vanished. have no idea when or where they went, but they disappeared faster than getting someone to actually work these days. For supposing to be heavy duty they seem to bend real easy. The knock down bar on the front, yeah, Ya might want to change that out with a real pipe that don't bend so easy. The one on the back is great. Course it really doesn't do anything, Kinda like kids these days. Now the scrapper bar, The angle iron on the rear roller, It keeps the mud and stuff from building up on the roller. Yup. Change that out too. Because the fist time you back into some brush that you need to mow down, will bend on you faster than a career politician . Now the next thing that happened, I could blame it on the machine, but I'd be lying. Dam it. Should have learned how to lie better. lol.. I actually had one of those cast 5.5lbs. metal hammers break right in two. Ya I kinda may have hit a 4in. diameter oak stump that was hidden in the tall grass and brush. The gentleman failed to mention he cut down a few small trees. All the other ones he cut down short enough that with the machine set to it's highest setting would go right over them. So of course when that happened, yah, you guessed it. I twisted the pto drive shaft. I still think it might have been the machines fault. (Just Kidding Nova). Gotta eat that one.
    But anyway. I did contact Nova Tractor and expressed my concerns. I let them know what happened and even told them the things I broke.
    There's that dam honesty thing again. But I never heard back from them. But I noticed that when the video and review you did they were happy to leave you a nice comment. Which is awesome. That's the one thing I didn't do. Guess I need figure out how to make a living doing video's and reviews. Gotta be easier work. Course if they sent stuff to me to see if it passes the Rick test would be awesome. Couse I can't afford to buy things just to see if I can break it. lol... Anyway. I've had to repair a lot of things on this machine that should not have had to fix. The gearbox is great, the balance of the roller and the mower drum is great. At the time I ordered mine, it was the biggest they offered. They now have the "Severe Duty " mower I wanted. All and all it's really an okay machine. As long as you don't plan on working it to hard. I'm also surprised they don't offer "Y" Blades for the heavy duty Mowers. That would be nice when you're mowing a hay field. The hammers work but you have to sharpen them. That takes time because you need to make sure they are balanced. Me. I'd swape them out. Then I could mow fast. to some. 4 years ago, you couldn't get one from Nova Tractor. I do a lot of roadside mowing for the state so I needed a machine that could do the task. This one is "NOT". I should have just waited for "The Red One" to get back in stock. They're a great machine that has lasted me for many years. Out of respect for Nova Tractor, I'll keep the name out of this review of my experience with their Ditch and Bank Mower because I think they're really a good company. Maybe after they've had their "Severe Duty" Ditch and Bank Flail Mower a while. Maybe in about another year or so, Depends on how long it takes me to save my pennies,
    possibly buying That one and see if I can break that one. I'd bet they made some good changes. That's why it say's "Severe Duty". Lol...
    Anyway. Just make sure you don't work it hard like I do. It won't hold up. I do Think Nova Tractor has a reasonable Price for their machines.
    So That being said, maybe when I get ready to replace this one I might like to try thir "Severe Duty" Ditch and Bank Flai Mower.

    I guess I'm stupid, but I'm not seeing how you put a stick through the hood, unless you threw something up from underneath. That is a bit of a concern for me as the slash is thrown forward, so I need to worry about what may be in the way of it (like the fuel tank on my Branson).
    I had not looked at this brand, but will investigate further as it does look pretty rugged.
