  • One of the weirdest facts about theme park history is that, in the 1950's, two men named Walter built some of the first theme parks less than 10 miles apart in Southern California. If you've been enjoying our Archives series on Disneyland and Knott's Berry Farm, you're familiar with these two characters already.
Walter Knott and Walt Disney had many things in common, aside from their name. They were both born in December, for example. But in certain ways, they couldn't have been more different. One was a farmer, the other a Hollywood studio executive. In this episode, we explore those similarities, differences, and what we can learn about what it takes to be the founder of a theme park.

Finally got a chance to watch this one - it's really interesting to see how similar Walt + Walter were but also where they diverge from each other. I think it's especially interesting comparing them after seeing your Disneyland series and currently watching the Knott's series. It's so interesting to me that they're relatively similar and ended up with the same goal at some point (a theme park) in such different ways with wildly different joruneys to that point.

It kinda gets into cliché territory, but it really is one of those “you never know where life will take you” things. Disney clearly had a strong desire to own an amusement park from childhood. But Knott kinda stumbled into it. And somehow both made extremely unique, enduring parks.

Honestly, it’s almost surprising he made it as long as he did. From the sound of it, he started smoking as a kid, and basically chain-smoked from the time he woke up to the time he went to bed for his entire adult life. When the people that worked closest with you describe you as, “never without a cigarette in [your] hand”, you know it’s pretty bad.

If you can earn a living doing what you enjoy you never have to work a day in your life. Both Walts enjoyed what they did.

7:15 okay but like for real; I guess I gotta watch sword and the stone. What in the world was going on with that movie?! 😂

Yeah, you should definitely watch Sword in the Stone. It’s actually pretty fun, and it’s short, too.
I was just trying to find a movie that came out around that time that it was possible Walter Knott had seen. Once I thought of that movie, it just was such a perfect bit because that scene is definitely bonkers out of context. Like, this is from a Disney movie? About a young King Arthur?
