  • Many feared the opening of Disneyland would be a problem for Knott's Berry Farm. Instead, it brought even bigger crowds to the park. Over the course of the decade following Disneyland's opening, Knott's Berry Farm grew, expanding its offerings to include mechanical rides for the very first time.
The concessionaire on the first mechanical ride would also become of on the park's most important designers, along with Paul von Klieben and Otheto Weston. Walt Disney may have had WED enterprises and imagineers, but Walter Knott had Wendell "Bud" Hurlbut.
We owe an enormous thanks to the Orange County Archives, holders of the Knott's Berry Farm historical collection. Without their generosity and friendly assistance, we would not have access to many of the incredible historic images and videos in this series. In particular, Chris Jepsen was of vital importance. He selected many of the images in this series based on our storytelling needs, and his keen eye for quality, yet-to-be-published images made this series infinitely better. All the images he selected - more than we could fit in these episodes - are freely available to the public on the OCA Flickr account. He also runs a delightful and insightful local history blog, which we highly recommend. Tell him Theme Parchive sent ya! You can find it here: ochistorical.blogspot.com/

I grew up right across from Knotts on Stanton Avenue. Independence Hall was the first thing you saw out my front door until they built Soak City. Lucky for you, Cedar Fair decided to add another chapter to the history of Knotts this week by announcing their merger with Six Flags so we’ll see how that turns out in the future.

Great video ... unlike Disneyland this park evolved like the wild west . The mine ride is a favorite and usually a short wait.
Love hearing the backstory on Bud Hurlbut's sacrifice to get this attraction built.

That mine train ride is huge and epic..insanely big and authentic.

I think pictures make it hard to get a sense of scale for it, so people don't realize how big it truly is. It's as tall as Sleeping Beauty's Castle over in Disneyland, and has a larger footprint.

@@ThemeParchive and I might add how solidly built it is..cavernous and spacious..as a kid it made me nervous to ride from how deep I though we went and how mysterious the settings where..later Knott's scary farm would add a sheer element of scares to it seasonally

Unfortunately, there's just not enough out there about her. She's literally the first example (that I'm aware of) of a woman running a theme park. She's super important for taking Knott's into the modern age of theme parks with multiple different "lands". She also doesn't have near the attention her father or mother had, though I think that was somewhat intentional on her part. She definitely comes across as a devoted daughter holding up the legacy of her parents more than someone who wanted the spotlight.
Her dad had several biographies written about him, her mom had one, but - so far at least - no one's done a Marion Knott biography, at least that I could find.

@@ThemeParchive That´s unfortunate for sure, I hope someday somebody manages to put together a biography about her as well

@@yousaysilver honestly, i'd take a few months off the channel, go rent a place in Orange County, and do all the research + writing in a heartbeat, if it was feasible.
i just don't think there's enough demand for the book, especially from a new author, for a publisher to fund that kind of thing.

5:28 yes. Yes they do. They are the worst.
    Down with geese.
    Also another great video.

That full video is so much worse than that tiny clip shows. Family are just chillin' by the water, watching the birds swim, and that goose literally swims over to the shore and just starts going after the kid. Geese are jerks.
