  • An EF-3 tornado destroys a wind turbine south of Spivey and west of Duquoin in Harper County, Kansas. The HD video is shown at normal size, then it repeats with the video enlarged and enhanced to show the blades ripped off the wind turbine and flying through the air. This was one of several Kansas tornadoes intercepted on an unexpectedly prolific tornadic day. This HD video is available for licensing.

      +Brivixxycej8 - it might seem ironic to someone who is only just now becoming aware that one of the highest wind resource areas in the United States is also called Tornado Alley. But rest assured, the insurance industry did their research beforehand. With thousands of wind turbines going up, a few will be hit by tornadoes. Any loss that can be reliably predicted can be insured against.

    Serious question, what is the cost analysis on this? The returns of wind turbines being placed in the windiest place in America (Tornado Alley), as opposed to the probability cost of repairs that turbines will need after they are damaged by tornadoes. Is it worth placing expensive machinery in an area where they are most likely to be damaged?

      A local community college had one of their turbines struck by lightening within the first year with damages exceeding $100,000. The cost of creating, erecting, and maintain these monstrosities is greater than the resources and energy needed to create them. If the government had not subsidized them, no one would use them. Think about that.
      The president community college I previously mentioned said the wind turbines were 'a complete embarrassment. ' Three could not even supply power for the college. The second turbine broke down within the second year. Students could not focus because of the 'thudding' noise resonating within the buildings, which is even more tragic when they disrupt homes.

      The chance of any one location on the plains being impacted by a Tornado in a given year is actually astronomically low. Combine this with the space between turbines and the (usually) fairly small size of tornados and it isn't even a consideration.

    on the EF scale EF0 being the smallest and least destructive, to EF5 which are the violent, dangerous, and deadly types is used by looking at how much damage the tornado has caused and there are some indicators that are left behind that can tell you wind speeds. that's if youre not using an anemometer. the thing about large violent tornadoes like EF3 or higher, is that they can grow to be 3/4-1mile wide and can move very quickly, up to 40, 50, 60, even 70mph ground speed

      Just 'guessing' here - the blades may also "feather" when stopped to prevent the wind from spinning. Much like an airplane propeller is feathered when its associated engine is shut down to prevent it from spinning the engine.

    • @boykoolaid
      @boykoolaid 8 років тому +5

      They operate on winds from 3 m/s to 15 m/s. Higher and it will automatically shutdown to prevent damages to the nacelle components.

    • @boykoolaid
      @boykoolaid 8 років тому +1

      The feathering you are saying is called pitching. It is like fine tuning of the blade's angle to compensate with the wind. Lower winds and it will flap out, on high winds it will fold to 86 degrees. 90 degrees being parallel to the wind. But higher than 15m/s and the generator automatically stops.

    Now I live in Southern Louisiana and our tornadoes aren't anywhere close to those in the Alley of DOOM!!!
    But when my 16yr old son didn't believe me when I told him how large a tornado really was. I had to bring him here.
    Back in July of 1989 I woke up to my dogs going crazy. Now I was only 13 at the time and knew we had bad weather coming in. When I walked out my front door and saw this tornado across the street, I couldn't believe what I was seeing. It was maybe an EF0 or EF1. But for a kid that never seen one before I just stood there as my mom was yelling hey stupid, get your butt I side now. Shingles were getting ripped off our roof and my basketball goal was no more. But other then that, we didn't have very much damage unlike the people that had direct hits. All I can think of is, just how weak this one was compared to the monsters yall get.

    if youre caught outside without protection right as the tornado reaches your exact location NO. because tornadoes pick up pieces of debris that turn to lethal shrapnel that are moving as fast as the winds are moving. plus the winds would pick you up and carry you several hundred even several thousand feet into the air. and when the wind cant keep you aloft anymore youll fall to your death. The F scale meant fujita and now its basically enhanced fujita (EF)

    Imagine the destruction caused by the notorious EF5 tornado. wind speeds can be as high as 320+mph which is strong enough to rip the clothing and even skin right off a persons body

    to be honest with ya, I don't really know. but I can guess what wed see as far as destruction in a twister on that high of a scale is unimaginable. nothing, no even the toughest hardened structure would survive something like that. but for something like that to happen, the amount of energy being released by the storm would be similar to that of a nuclear blast wrapped up in a minefield

  • @derekwall82

    so really there is no difference at all. it used to be just the F scale, now its the EF scale. im sure you might know this fact, the F scale to begin with was named after a weatherman named Theodore Fujita

    How come none of them were spinning? Windless tornado maybe??

    • @BigBoy4005
      @BigBoy4005 8 років тому

      +William Martin I'd say there was plenty of wind to make them operate. Wind turbines have a relatively narrow operating envelope and must be shut down when the wind is too strong - or too weak (even if they would still operate sporadically). Otherwise they may have been shut down as a precaution, the power lines were taken out so there is no place to 'put' the energy, or control signals were lost due to the storm.

    • @bopsouttaopps
      @bopsouttaopps 8 років тому

      Turbines have breaks, to keep at a safe speed just about all large wind turbines have disk breaks so they don't spin too fast or there's already enough electricity in the transmission lines.

    • @BigBoy4005
      @BigBoy4005 8 років тому

      Indeed they do have brakes, but they aren't used (at least not for any prolonged amount of time) to regulate the speed - the amount of heat that would create would be very hard to dissipate. The brakes are used for stopping and holding the turbine. The means for regulating power output is through multiple/variable gearing to the generator and/or blade pitch control. If the wind blows too fast, the turbine is shut down completely. The same goes for a situation where the power is not needed.

  • @derekwall82

    tornadoes like EF0s to EF3s are very common but short lived. tornadoes like EF4s & EF5s are rare and often long lived because most thunderstorms have enough energy to produce a large and violent tornado. tornadoes large and small mainly come from supercell thunderstorms. and depending on how much energy and instability there is in the atmosphere is why tornadoes vary in size
