Schofield equals strong.. my mother strong…..moving to America at 21 and driving a fortune 50 company for the last 32 years... Schofield’s are strong people. I often think I could have been even stronger !
Wonderful story about a different perspective of motherhood. Not every parent enters into parenthood enthusiastically, but that doesn't mean that can't grow into great parents.
Great speech! Reminds me of my mom and makes me miss her. Tough minded, compassionate, loving, no shrinking violet. high achiever, great sense of humor, taught us to be the same. I like the "should slayer" especially around mom-shaming. Albert Ellis, psychologist and pioneer of Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) expressed it thusly: "Don't should on me." LOL
You're so candid! In India if we talk this we get blisters. But I fought this society.... And I won... Can you understand... Fighting ppl in India... Absolutely backward
It was funny, but I felt that her pauses were way too long. At least every now and then, especially at the beginning of the speech. I fully agree that one "should" be a shouldslayer. Never do things just because people think you should do this or that.
It’s weird to me to have this expectation that you can have a great, high powered, prestigious career and be the world’s best parent as well. I wish it were acceptable for women to reenter the workforce after they raise their young children instead of floundering on the sidelines of both occupations
Biological nonsense. We are all reproductive parts, hopefully on legs, and with computers up top. How else do you think you came to exist? Did your mother "personize" you into existence? Wombs and their contents are existence.
Yes Julie, I agree with you, that was actually my working title. I wanted to call it the Should Slayer, but the Tedx organisers wouldn't change the title. Thanks for your comment
Shoulds are only social indicators, usually based on some fundamental facts. No reason to be proud of not following directions on a map, instead one should emphasize the value in trail blazing. Imagine if a surgeon just said I should use stainless steel equipment, but I won't, just for the sake of defying the should.
long story short: 17 minutes of mental breakdown and whining and wanting it all and blaming everything on the people around you. I like the original idea of the speech but the way it's brought isn't really my cup of tea. it's too whiney and too much: oooooooooh noooooooooooo whamen are being oppressed

This is a childfree lady that succumbed to societal pressures.

I found that talk very good and appreciated how brave the speaker was to admit some taboos.
I love it, I'm gonna use the should slayer philosophy

Totally agree.
Loved this! 🙌🏾
+1 for "shouldslayer"!
Children didn't sign up for you to create them. So please don't expect them to help you with personal affairs.
Ugh, I'm a person, not a womb on legs!
And you will NEVER, EVER, have anything in your womb, and on the part of the world let me thank you.

Misleading Title

I should be should slayer
incredible
She is entertaining! Inspiring content.
This one was really strange. Maybe the title was what’s throwing me off.
Awesome speech :)

Interesting message, thoroughly unlikable speaker.
This whole diatribe is crazy.
So did she drown the baby in the tub or what?
Elocution master? Really? Words don't make any more sense just by being followed by a pause. Or a change in pace and pitch for that matter.
