    Your absolutely right on all counts, the best images come from your own interest and passion for the images or project. The equipment these days no matter the brand is more than adequate. Looking at others on YT or insta can be exhausting and is a waste of good photography time, trying to post photos that everybody likes is impossible. Love that your back at the quarry , love your shots from there , look forward too the next video.

    I agree with you on the gear point of view - it's what you do with it, and how much time you put into it. I'm just a hobbyist, not as able to put as much time or money into my photography. I don't always get the photos I'd like, and I know it's often my impatience, not having a clearly defined reason to shoot, other than 'I'll know it when I see it'. I'm still trying to get my eye in with my own creative vision. But I still go out and shoot, and usually I'll take at least one photo on a roll that I like. I am tired of social media, so I don't always share those photos - sometimes the photos I take are just for me!
    All that being said, I very recently picked up a Nikon F80 at a good price, and I'm excited to see what I can produce with it!

    • @SteveONions
      @SteveONions  4 місяці тому

      I’m sure you’ll like the F80, it may be a middle of the road camera but they got the ergonomics spot on.
      I’m content to just go out walking and if I get any shots that’s a bonus, not putting too much pressure on yourself is very important.

    When you got to your equipment segment.. spot on. Good gerar is easy to find. The difference is between the ears. Our "photographic eye"... what we see as suitable subject.... that is what makes or breaks the photo given that there is enough knowledge of how to use the equipment. I some times fall short and do not come away with what I should... but that's on me.

    Lovely images from start to finish. the 2nd last image was spectacular for me, it had “the mood” of BW and of light and darkness. Wicked, that one. On a different note, I find a majority of UA-camrs on photography focused on gear and equipment. Nothing wrong with that, obviously. I gravitate towards a balanced vlog ie between the personal experience of walking about eg hiking, gear use , the ups and downs and finally, landscape images. It’s not purely about images only. I would think the human facet in that photography adventure of yours and those of others on UA-cam or Instagram cannot be over-emphasised. It serves as a reflection of our own mini adventures and our personal journey in doing the things we are passionate about. Cheers

    So true about fitness.I walk a lot, do weights and cardio to keep fit when out with my gear. I've come to the realisation that newer digital cameras are not for me. They are just computers with annoying glitches compared to older DSLRs. Just my opinion, but this mindset has seen me withdraw more and more away from tech to a more basic fully in control set up shooting film cameras. Whenever I go on a daily walk it is always with a film slr. I remember you shooting videos, just the odd few where there was no dialogue, just the walk, the scenes in front of you or just a slideshow to music. There is a whole new generation of film shooters coming through my lab now and it has been great helping them get the most out of their new to them film cameras. Today was a young lady getting to grips with her Olympus XA and showing her how to get the best results shooting with it. I'm back 🔙 n my comfort zone with film. I do enjoy digital but film is my passion. Beautiful photos Steve. Thanks again for creating such great content and not a Squarespace plug in sight.

    • @SteveONions
      @SteveONions  3 місяці тому

      I feel very much the same about modern equipment Simon, it offers amazing possibilities but leaves me cold. I sometimes wonder why I struggle with film on long hikes but always appreciate the results when I develop the rolls a few days later.
      Keeping fit is very important to me and I know that I have to be careful when out alone in the hills. Things that I could do without thought 30 years ago now take careful preparation and the walking gear has to be just right. Thankfully there’s a lot of good advice (among the bad) out there on the internet about general diet and health that it’s helping me keep doing what I love for longer.

    Something you said during the video reminded me of something Leonardo DaVinci said to me all those years ago. “The painter will produce pictures of little merit if he takes the work of others as his standard”. One of the problems as I see it is that back in our day (pre wheels) a bride would look in magazines at wedding photography for ideas and of course only the good work made it into the magazines. This meant that their expectations were high and a photographer had to meet those expectations to be considered. These days a bride to be uses Facebook to look at others images and (on the whole) the standard has dropped considerably, therefore her expectations are much lower. Potential photographers only have to meet the lower expectations to be considered “acceptable”. Ramble over 😂

    A great subject to touch on, Steve. This year I decided to abandon what I thought were the ethos of my photograhy and start taking risks. That has stopped the boredom to some extent, and I hope the mediocrety. You know that I prefer B&W film to digital any day and as the result, I have tried to stop thinkng about banging a filter on top of the lens, downrating, etc etc and I have even started to tackle subjects that i considered taboo for me up to now. I have even attempted to stick my lens into people's faces ( not really but you know what I mean ) and do ' street '. I have started to try and shoot like Robert Adams and Raymond Moore. Something to exercise the mind as well as the eyes. I really do get what you mean, but for me it is about taking risks now.

      It’s always a good idea to change things up every so often as we can easily get into a rut and lose interest. I swing between B&W and colour but know my heart is with the former. Perhaps trying new approaches is needed if only to confirm we like what we usually do?

    great vid and discussion. Im the very same.. after years of getting caught up in it all.. i now dont look at socials in terms of photography. People are so polarised now anyway, that you cant even have a discussion because so many photographers think they know it all ...for such a subjective subject, i cant see how. I can name many here who everyone will know and they just are so rude.
    Fitness and getting out and enjoying it is the main thing.. doing it for you... youtube is great, but boy, there are so many people trying to earn a buck, and the photography is poor, yet they think they are the greatest photographers lol Also Gear acquisition syndrome seems to exits for many of them... and its just seems to be creating content for the sake of content to maintain subscribers. Its all a distraction really and people fall for it. Did you use a drone at all Steve, or have someone along with you? Trying to figure out the aerial fisheye spin shots. Another great informative video man 👍📸

      I’ve recently picked up one of those 360 cameras just for outings like this 🙂

    As an amateur I use the "if I like it, take it approach". I do not look for masterpieces but for improved photos or just ones that appeal to me. When I had a photo business ages ago (way before digital), I could not do that. I now photograph only for myself. I always love and follow your videos.

      I wouldn’t like to do photography as a full time profession, it would spoil the enjoyment and I’d probably move on to something else.

      @@SteveONions Yep that happened to me. However, I was only at it part-time and could have done it fulltime. However, even the parttime worked robbed me of the joy of photography.

    6:20 was *just because* intentional? 😊
    Somehow I'm thinking the photo of the sheep should have been shown when you were recommending not to be influenced by UA-cam, Instagram etcetera.

    I've decided to embrace my mediocrity and not fight it
    At my age and health issues I'll never be a great photographer but am enjoying it more
    I'm turned off at the do's and don'ts on UA-cam from so called experts, so I don't watch them any more
    I like your advice on this one and the photos aren't bad either way 📷 👍

      Same here, I’ve long got over the idea of becoming really good at photography and I’m happy just to take things as they come.
