  • Given the box office result in Korea, some Western media is reporting that "racist backlash" from Korea is what led to The Little Mermaid live-adaptation tanking. But what do Koreans think about this? We created a full street interview on this topic, so check it out on our UA-cam channel (link in bio)!

Korea had the biggest box office for black panther outside US, UK and China, if you consider Korea's population size is merely a fraction of the other 3 countries you can clearly see Korea embracing Black Panther as a whole and unfazed by a black lead cast. If you consider other examples of huge hits in korean box office from foreign non-hollywood films with brown or black lead cast that have failed to reach similar success in western countries. Koreans seem to be more accepting of multiple ethnicities represented on screen. Korea has a huge market of live action versions of their web published graphic novels called webtoons, whilst small deviation is accepted and embraced large departures from original series are often heavily criticised as it appears staying true to the original is a more important factor to the Korean consumers than we realise.
Suddenly hollywood wants us to believe little mermaid tanking must be due to Korean racism and not the fact that disney botched another live action remake.
Let us not forget the times western remakes of popular japanese animated series like avatar the last airbender, dragonball z failing in western markets, you couldnt say it was because the western consumers were racist to the white cast, but rather the failure of the end result in living up to the original.

Western media is very funny. In Europe, the film also received huge critical reviews and was sluggish at the box office. Nevertheless, it only criticizes East Asia. Personal attacks and mocking memes against the black mermaid were all created in the American Internet community. The United States has no right to criticize any other country. Especially, there is no right to criticize South Korea, where racially-related violent murders are much rarer than in the US and Europe.
And in South Korea, Spider-Man: New Universe with a black Spider-Man was a hit, and Aladdin with a black Genie was watched by more than 10 million people (1/5 of Entire South Korean Population). Black Panther was also quite successful in South Korea. Rethink whether racism is a real factor or the movie itself is the problem.

BS. Let's call a spade a spade. By "weird" he really means that he doesn't agree with the casting choice of Ariel, because the movie is 95% accurate to the original animated film. If you enjoyed the original film there shouldn't be any reason you wouldn't like this live action remake. They made slight deviations to the storyline but it was nothing too drastic. The biggest deviation was obviously the casting of a black actress as Ariel. For the sake of argument, let's compare it to the 2015 live remake of Cinderella or Maleficent's reimagining of the classic Sleeping Beauty story - both of which deviated considerably from the original films but were well-received in the Asian market - and you can clearly diagnose the problem. If y'all want to defend racism, that's fine. But just don't beat around the bush and deny it. It just makes you look like a coward.

@@tempest_2222 I suppose that’s a fair question and a fair implied point, whether the implication was intended or not. I suppose there is always an agenda to everything we do. In filmmaking that agenda has been, and probably mostly should be, entertainment and quality storytelling, though stories often have, and maybe even need to have, intended messages.
The agenda of this particular film’s producers, and the agenda that I and others are taking issue with, is the agenda to manipulate and convince society at large that we should no longer judge a person based on the contents of their character or the quality of their work, but solely, or mostly, on the color of their skin (or their sexuality, their gender, etc.)
The agenda is to drive further into the minds and hearts of society the message that white people are bad and the cause of all evil in the world, that people of color are perpetually victims of white people, and that all white people must be sacrificed in every facet of life in order to eradicate the evil of their existence.
I suppose it’s a free country and I certainly won’t prohibit anyone from espousing and sharing their beliefs. But I will also feel free to share mine and to criticize the messages I feel are wrong and destructive. Perhaps especially when the vehicle they choose for those messages is a beloved children’s movie. If you want to spread the message of racial valuation, I suppose you should be free to do that. But create your own story, and build that story around your message. Don’t commandeer an existing story, especially one intended for children, and try to manipulate it to share your message.

Black Panther 1 enjoyed immense popularity in South Korea, attracting a staggering 5.4 million viewers, which made it a phenomenal success. Its opening day alone drew in an impressive 630,012 viewers, breaking the record for the highest opening in South Korea for 2018. This achievement was notable as it had been four years since a foreign film, Frozen in 2014, dominated the box office during the Lunar New Year holiday season. Black Panther 1 shattered that record.
Notably, Black Panther 1 also became the fastest foreign film to reach over 5 million viewers among all movies released in Korea in February 2018. The fact that it ultimately amassed 5.4 million viewers indicates that it captured the attention of over 10% of South Korea's entire population.
Some may argue that Black Panther's success was unsurprising given its association with the Marvel franchise. To counter this, let's consider another example.
Get Out, a satirical movie tackling racism, was not widely recognized initially. Consequently, Korean film importers had no plans to bring the film to Korea. However, many Korean individuals went as far as crowdfunding and petitioning the importers to release the movie. Eventually, Get Out climbed to the top of the Korean box office, becoming the second-largest performance worldwide after the United States. Director Jordan Peele, in a promotional video for his next film, Us, acknowledged that Get Out was born in the United States but found tremendous support and success in Korea.
Does this indicate Koreans are racist? It's unfair to attribute The Little Mermaid's failure solely to racial discrimination. People in Korea refuse to go to movie the little mermaid not because they are racists but Disney didn't make a good movie.

how can you black/whitewash a mermaid? its a fucken fish. it’s not even human its not even real it literally does not matter what color she is because mermaid mythology is worldwide and does not have any significance to one specific culture. it would be a different story if they took an Irish princess, and made her African. that would be disrespectful. but this is … a sea creature

This is why people don’t take the claim of racism seriously anymore, people are just blaming everything on it and refusing to look at things objectively. I’m black and completely agree with the last girl, Disney messed up with raceswapping Ariel. It shouldn’t happen to any pre-existing character in a canon universe, as it simply leads to confusion with the character and marketing (choosing between black Ariel and white Ariel for example). They could have made a completely new black princess and it would’ve been fine. Saying ‘it’s racism’ is just causing people to feel more exasperated at black people as you can see from the people in the clip.
