It's also important to have multiples of them or at least have other animals they can socialize with. My mom bought a guinea pig and it barely ate. So I bought her another guinea pig to keep it company and the two are constantly chattering at one another.
My pig hated other pigs. I happened upon a kitten and the pig was of course mad. Over time they bonded over their mutual hate for me. I would literally catch them talking about me behind my back.
My pig convinced my cat to eat vegetables an hay...not sure if she was Being nice of it was a joke...I'll never know

I have guinea pigs, started off with 4, all from the same litter.
Thought they were all girls, turns out they weren't (we had 3 boys and a girl). We ended up with a baby, so we gave the girl and baby to my mam's friend. Had 3 left, unfortunately 2 of them died so we only have one left now.
Splodge (remaining pig) is suprisingly happier by himself now, he was the runt so he always used to get bullied, even got bit once, but now he's alone he's spoiled. Like this pig gets everything, we've bought more nuggets for one pig then we did for 4. It's kinda odd how some guinea pigs are more happy by themselves, it's just so uncharacteristic.
Fun fact. In Switzerland it is actually illegal to own only one Guinea pig.
