    Realizing the Korean "ah crap" is like the English version of starting to say "ah sh*t" and then trailing off so you don't swear "ah shhhhh..."

    After watching numerous Korean dramas I unconsciously started using these expressions and sounds in my daily life. My sister is the same. So now we feel like it's the normal way to react. I wonder if people find us weird ⊙﹏⊙

    Ooooh I have developed a habit of saying "Ya" in place of "Hey" because of the amount K-Dramas I watch. I only use it with my little sister and brother and pets though and it sometimes accidentally comes out in school with my friends but I didn't know it was not to be used casually. Of course I don't use it with my parents or elders because I would never address them like "Hey" either but I thought since "Ya" is said soooooo much in K-Dramas, it was something you can just say around.
    Plus I really love your videos, just found your channel. ^_^

      she said exactly what the subtitles said she said, if you can understand her why do you need it typed out? Try to sound it out and type it yourself, it is good practice for learning. I can speak semi-fluently cause my mom is korean but reading and writing are a struggle since I just never do them, I also do have a korean keyboard nearby nor the effort to type it out so hopefully you can figure it out

    My kids used Aish in public a couple times - just to themselves, and people were really offended. So we learned not to use that one around ajusshis and ajummas. Instead we use Aigoo because we hear that one a lot and it seems less offensive. Also - saying "ya" to get someone's attention is not very polite either unless you are angry and don't care. Chogeeyo is way better. My kids love to say "ottoke!?" when they are confused or surprised by something. ^_^

    Dr Oh, they say this a lot in korean drama now lately "헐" kinda like heol. I sorta get that it means, you're saying "shocking" or "wow" in a disappointed way but I'm not sure. What exactly does it mean? Please answer :D Thanks.

      they made a video for that on eatyourkimchi

    • @qtee
      @qtee 11 років тому +2

      Heol can be several different things depending on context and situation. Let's say your friend tells you they won the lottery and of course, you don't believe them. There, you might say heol (kinda like 'whatever'). Or if something bad happens, like, you spill your coffee on your shirt before work. There's another heol. It can be used like "Unbelievable", "Are you kidding me?", or even like disbelief is something good: "Heol! Are you serious! That's daebak!"
      Hope that helps c:

      Right?! The brainfreeze sound sounds like something I would do, and the "Aishhe" sounds a lot like "ah, sh*t."
      I think it's really cool, and I'm guessing it's because these stem from older, more primeval vocalizations, but then cultural distinctions have refined their sounds and situations of use.
