Great advise. The best of which is patience. The only tools I needed was a small crescent wrench and a sight line to the brake pad. Turned the bike upside-down , rolled the wheel and adjusted as Rich explained. Thank you for your detailed explanation.
I had no idea Peter Griffin was a bike mechanic.
But, seriously...You, sir, are awesome! Thank you for this video. I don't have to take'er to the bike shop now!
HOLY COW , having a metal block bolted to the rear drop out acts as a great base for the dial indicator....brilliant
LOL I said the same thing as below, youve helped me with my 99 Saturn SL a ton of times, now your fixing my BIKE!!!
this was a nice video, i like how you talk nice and slow so beginners like me have a chance to get it.
I'm already one of your biggest fans for Saturn stuff,
Now you're helping me with bikes too..?
Amazing..
Thank you!
*Edit - I've had one of those wrenches with random weird hardware from my dad for years... I didn't know that's what it was.... I was even looking at it yesterday.... And now I don't have to buy one hehe...
You've made my night. Thank you sir!
Nice video Sir,, I'm 63 and just bought a used bicycle that had this problem. Now I know what to do thanks to you. Hope You and yours have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Have fun with your new bicycle.
its guys like you who help them understand what they cant do
Appreciate the video. I was riding my bike to work on 24 Feb and got hit by a car. They left me laying in the street and took off. Hit and runs are a problem here in the Denver area. I'm still pretty sore. But it bent my tires slightly and my bike is my only transportation right now. I found your video helpful on getting the wheels a little bit less bent. Thanks. =)
Glad your OK i have had some close calls myself.
As a former bicycle mechanic, this vid by richpin06a has some good tips for truing up a wheel from regular rim/spoke flex. Keep in mind, any up down truing is done also by loosening (upward) and tightening (downward) spokes, you must work both side to side and up/ down adjustments simultaneously. Good vid and maintenance tips :)
Man, you are helpful! I also used your video on the fz6 air filter replacement. I knew how to do it, but double checking via your video made me more than confident. Thanks again!
Excellent video, well-paced and very clearly presented. Now I want a "Dial Indicator" more than a name-brand truing stand. Bad day for the mosquito though... LoL-
the truing tutorial was great, but the mosquito grab did steal the show haha
this is the most high tech way to true a rim that I have ever seen. I love it. I just use the break pads and watch when they touch to adjust accordingly. crude but it'll get you home.
brilliant thanks for responding so fast! going to attempt truing my wheels soon.
Thank you very much for explaining bike truing to me. It worked perfectly on my wife's bike. I used a ziptie instead of the pencil, workes perfectly if you dont have the mesuring tool. Thaks for the fixed bike :-)
Great video in really beginner friendly terms. Thanks
That is one hell of a bicycle stand.
Good stuff, Rich!
I have had wheels with a slight wobble and had no problem in the past.
Thanks for sharing and nice mosquito catch!
Dude your videos are so helpful. Just got back in from riding and I needed to complete this task. Thanks to your video it was easy. Can you show how to tighten mechanical disc brakes?
A little tip for you , the clamp thumb screws on the Dial indicator should be as close as physically possible to the actual indicator, this reduces any inaccuracy from the movement of the arm. (Old habits as a Machinist)
excellent video, thanks for the tips!
Thanks! This is a very helpful video!
that was very helpful! going to get a spoke key and try to true my own wheel, now that i understand the concept behind the theory. cheers big ears lol
Man simple and eZ explain. All other utubeer makes it compacting to understand. I have similar ebike
Glad it helped
Great video, well explained & non techy, fixed my rear wheel in about 10 mins
Very informative, thanks.
Good video man.
Good catch.
I weld a pipe then a flat piece of metal bent to fit the bottom bracket.
thank u very much for the tutorial, very much appreciated :)
Thanks, very helpful!
this is very clear demo
This is a bloody mosquito killing movie! LOL.
"well he's not gonna be around anymore " lool
Yes! You can actually measure it if you have a dial indicator that just happens to be laying around.
@bluejeantex Thank you for sharing expert advise.
@therockkkkher I have watched that video as well. Super informative. I was looking specifically for a video on tightening the brake cables and such. How are you liking the 4300? I have a 3700 and 6000. Amazing bikes. Hardtail for life!
Great video. I have just one question, I noticed that you did all of your adjusting with the tire on the rim, would you just let some air out before truing, or would that even have a bearing on it in this case?
Have you tried replacing the brake pads.
Take your time and give it a try first if it does not work out then bring it to the shop.
Thanks alot!!!
@noooooobster I will put that on my to do list right now
Cool! I really like the steel base you rigged up to hold the dial indicator. Good thinking! Did you use a piece of angle iron, or what?
T
question: my rear tire is rubbing against the rim. does this need truing? i had a flat tire, fixed it, but in the process, a bolt got stripped while trying to remove it and i think the axle was affected.
heh heh, he sounds like Ray Romano. Thanks for the vid though :) helped me out a lot
It is a dial indicator.
what tools is that and how did you get it to attach to the back? And how do you set it so to know where the center of the rim is?
hi I got a question... if a spoke was missing from the wheel, can I get it trued very close this way?? or do I have to replace the spoke?? ty great video!! tks
Thanks from Iraq
Yes it does sound like you axle is not in the right place which would lead to the tire hitting the frame.
Yes it was a piece of scape angle iron.
Awesome
By bicycle standards it is a bit overkill using a dial indicator.
That is my steel milk crate stand.
I can see how a dial indicator would make this a more accurate fix. Do the professionals use that method, or do they go with a low tech solution?
Thank you so much Peter Griffin..lol. No really thanks
You are entitled to your First Amendment rights.
Did you measure bearing play beforehand?
@spelunkerd They use a lower tech method.
@Outofthi5tube I was deep in the woods at the time and it got me home.
So if you don't have a pencil, just use one of those magnetic gauge thing a ma-jigs?
I would think the rim has a weak point in it know with the slice so i would replace it.
Thanks for the video. What gauge is that? where did you get it?
It is a dial indicator from my machinist tool box.
So do you need to put the dial gauge on the other side of the rim and repeat the process or can you do it all from that one side? thanks.
Measurement is taken from one side.
@MrDemontrigger I had to it had west nile disease.
You can get it close but for the price of spoke it is not worth running without it.
Do you mean rubbing against the frame.
Without looking at it i am not sure.
What kind of stand is holding the bike?
At 4:27 to 4:37 thereabouts you tried to tighten the right hand side (RH) spoke to pull the wheel to the right but went and tried to loosen the left hand (LH) spoke instead because the right hand spoke was already too tight. What if the LH was already very loose and the RH was already very tight and the wheel was still canted away to the left?
i have the same bile but mine is silver and black and it looks much better
Nice video. By the way, you sound like homer simpson when he was young!
He killed Mike the Mosquito. ARRRGGHHHH
Does truing cause loss of air pressure on tire?
I should change the title.
How did you make it?
nice, I can fix my wobbly wheels now :)
one of my tubes blew up in my rim and the rim i think expanded wat should i do
The tire is very pliable so i do not think it makes a difference that the tire is on when truing.
fuckin ninja skills...with the mosquito....went to sleep before wheel was trued.
about how much of a bend will this fix?
@Outofthi5tube I've done that in the past.
whats the indicator tool called?
Generally, if something doesn't bother you, it's OK.
I crashed my bike and it's about 10 mm out, do I just stand on it instead?
With all your crazy tools you would think that you would have invested in a basic wheel truing stand and spoke wrench that is a little nicer on the hands. All told about $100.00 for both tools, four times to your LBS for wheel truing and the tool are payed for.
Yes i try
yes, against the frame (i don't know why i typed rim).
Mine bent so much when you spin it it stops spinning at the bent part and its my front tire
cant believe I payed a bike shop $25 to do this
A lot like tuning my drums nice
Nice video. However, not everyone has access to expensive measurement gear. There would also not be any need to work within thousands...a few hundreds would be more than enough. So a simple piece of whatever one has got lying around, taped to the frame, could also be used as a reference point.
Yes i agree something taped to the frame will get you close.
+richpin06a end of a cable tie wrapped around chainstay & tightened works well if u trim the cable end til it just touches rim :D
Hey Rich, Want a roomate??? It would be awesome to hang out with you! Thanks for all your videos!!!
what if i dont have a reference point?
@spelunkerd, @richpin06, ...any bicycle/repair shop would use a "park 'brand' truing stand" for out of frame truing...I would not say low tech, the stand allows the mechanic to true and center rim for a proper repair. :)
@sampsondog04 I would think you would want the run out under .015
@richpin06a Does it work?
