    I've seen a few of Jules's videos now and they are always the best on UA-cam, by a country mile in fact. He explains stuff in such a way that a beginner can understand, never uses jargon or *assumes* the viewer has a certain knowledge of the subject already, like many others do. He is basically perfect for this job and I have benefited several times from his instructional videos. I hope he reads this message and knows just how much these vids are appreciated. So BIG thanks, Jules!

    Sorry, but I've been a professional bicycle technician for nearly 40 years, and that is NOT a buckled rim. It's obvious to me it is a wheel where the spokes were messed around with to make it really out of true, which is not the same thing as a rim bent from an accident. A bent rim is often only trued with wildly uneven spoke tension, or in really bad cases, bending the rim back through brute force.

      That's what I was thinking. If it was that easy, there would be no reason to ever buy new wheels. Or he's a wizard...

      A buckle, out of true. A bit picky. It wasn't straight and he made it straight. End of. If your wheel is bent a different technique is required.
      But when is a buckle out of true or bent, what's the real distinction.
      This guy offered value and gave value.
      Thanks man. Great video. My bent wheel is now straight!

    You repair a buckled wheel by getting a new one. Once it's bent, is fucked. You really don't want to push your bike for 10 miles back to the car. Maybe Evans do teeny tiny rides where their dads go with them, but my rides are epically mental in the winter, in Wales, in the middle of fucking nowhere, boom.

  • @itslilyitslily
    @itslilyitslily 11 років тому +1

    To do this cheaply...
    Turn your bike upside down
    Sellotape a pencil to the fork or even just a post-it note side-on.
    Spin and adjust your spokes
    Check dish by eye.

      najaneda that’s works that way if you’re working at the bottom of the rim, as you can see he is working at the top, the nipples are flipped 180 degrees.

    can you buckle a wheel to much that this technique wont work?

  • @danielbull6709
    @danielbull6709 5 років тому +1

    To verify the rim is truly buckled (bent out of shape) you will need to remove all the spokes and see if the rim lies flat. Here the buckle is caused by uneven spoke tension pulling the rim out of shape.

    Good video, helpful! I always start by truing straight away, not by finding the loose spokes, so I learnt something straight away. In fact I think I made a mistake by not doing that first earlier today....
    I have a wheel that was badly buckled but I've fixed it somewhat and it isn't so bad now, but there are still loose spokes in seemingly random positions. I probably should have found the loose ones and sorted them out before truing.
    At what point is a wheel too buckled to be trued?

    "does putting your back wheel in your freezer work to unbuckle the back wheel?"
    I'd say the people who told you that are the same kind of people who say smoking banana skins get you high, or that toothpaste gets rid of CD/DVD scratches. So...um...make of that what you will, LOL. Also, you're commenting on a video that shows you *exactly* how to un-buckle a wheel....so get yourself a spoke key and use the freezer for your food, dude. Is there anything that can be done to fix (fully?) a out wards bulging inner rim? The person who had the bike before hand must have hit a curb and the rim bulges out on boths sides in one point and keeps rubbing against the brakes each rotation The wheel itself is mostly fine except that one bulge. Is there anyway to fix it?

    1:06 I'm having trouble to see how that is a Clockwise turn

    • @Jigaboo123456
      @Jigaboo123456 8 років тому +2

      He means that it is a clockwise turn if viewed from above the wheel. Just think of the spoke as a long bolt you are holding upside down,i,e, with the hex head pointing to the ground and the nipple as the nut you are trying to tighten on it.
      If you turn the nut clockwise as you look down on it, it will go further down the bolt- Transfer that thought to the spoke and the nipple, When you turn the nipple clockwise as you look down, the nipple will move down towards the other end of the spoke, shortening it and thus pulling the wheel rim towards it.

    • @SirPrancelot1
      @SirPrancelot1 7 років тому +1

      Jay Igaboo thanks for the nut and bolt analogy, VERY HELPFUL, first time I've heard anyone say this. The clockwise/anticlockwise thing leads to much confusion. Just bought a spoke key, hoping for the best.

    @MrJORDANAKAJJ This is a old skool myth, back in the 80’s when BMX was king it was said that you could put “skyway” mag wheels in your freezer when buckled and then hey presto they will be true like new. There is no scientific evidence to back this up.

    When I tighten my loose spokes the wheel gets more buckled. If I tension and loosen spokes to correct buckles the tension is really tight on some spokes and wobbly loose on others. Whats going on?

  • @GearTutorials

    I don't want to splash out on a wheel trueing stand. So would you advise against having my bike upside down (on its saddle and handlebars) while i spin the wheel, adjust the spokes to correct the buckle?
    Also, when you say tighten spokes in pairs, would this be adjacent pairs on the same sides, or left and ride sides?

    • @MikeysFitness
      @MikeysFitness 11 років тому +3

      It felt stiffer and "straight", but the spokes aren't tensioned properly and I don't think they dished the rim either... just a quick job. I asked them when paying if I could see what had been done to the rim with a demo wheel truing stand... he said no, e don't have one and I said, how am I suppose to know if anything has changed or it is straight as the spokes weren't even tensioned properly.. he said you'll just have to take our word for it. I was a bit disappointed seeing as they are one of the most famous bike stores in the UK for high end bikes. Some spokes feel extremely tight, while the others are soft. It rides, though.

    A good way to know how much to adjust spokes is to take the gap measurement between tool feet and rim (after setting adjuster for other side), divide by 8.
    For example, if it's 4 mm off, 4/8 = 1/2, so do 1/2 turns for tighten on that side spokes.
