The fact that they don't remember certain conversations, and repeat them almost word for word several years ago is so funny to me. Good to know that Dan still has the same 7 days tolerance to people puking on him, even after all this years.

I love how much Dan simultaneously hates this game so much he yells at it and is fascinated by it to notice all these little touches he doesn't remember or didn't notice from the first time. Meanwhile Arin sounds like he's trying to figure out how to get to the airport parking or something.

The theory that Arin alluded to is that you cross time and space during the events of P.T. So when you see the bathroom door rattling at one point, that's actually you in another point in time trying to open the door. And when you look through the peephole from the bathroom, the eye you see on the other side is your eye looking back from another point in time. Given the quote at the beginning of the game and that this is a phenomenon that happened in previous Silent Hill games, the theory is strongly believed to be true.

It's kind of amazing how a game that never came out was so influential on horror games moving forward. The atmosphere, the sound design, the knowledge that something terrible happened but only a skewed version of events from someone we don't even know the identity of. It's influence and disappointment backstory all still infamous to this day.
Honestly, I'd put it up there as one of the top five influential horror games ever made. And it wasn't actually made.
So well put honestly. It terrifies and excited me with the atmosphere and the story. I really wanted to know more of the story and where it was going to go which makes me still incredibly sad
The sound design is so good in this. Like, it has someone doing a terrified scream. Hearing creepy crying or footsteps is so often used that it kind of gets bland unless used really well. But someone doing a genuine sounding scream or plead for mercy, that'll make your hair stand on end. And it did for me during that one moment of this game. And I don't even blame indie or AAA games for not doing it because, as far as I know, it's not an easy thing to do or set up properly.

Seriously...it's kind of wild, P.T. completely changed the course of the Resident Evil series for the better

It’s beautiful to see that Arin has all but completely forgotten everything about this, while Danny remembers the trauma with almost photogenic precision.
Edit: @askthepizzaguy caught me, I used photogenic instead of photographic. But I'm gonna chalk it up to a Freudian slip when writing about Dan.

For the record: you can see her in the game as she's following you. She's basically slowly chasing you through every room and if you take too long she eventually catches you, kills you, and you restart from the last "checkpoint" that is the loop you're currently on

No she does not slowly move towards you, she is just attached to the player so her twotching shadow is seen but she isn't. It's just to put the player at unease.
She will NOT attack you ni matter how long you wait.
Nah. She almost always catches you once. I've never seen a complete play through without this happening, but other than that one time she won't do anything but follow you. Some runs I've done she never shows up at all. Some (like this game grumps one apparently) she shows up in every spot she is able to (I've never seen that happen before- it's crazy they got all of those in one video to me). Her behavior is pretty crazy (random), but they're all scripted moments that are supposed to happen. She's not technically "chasing" you because her "catching you"- while random (it can happen anywhere)- is a scripted moment just like you being able to see her standing in the alcove, or outside the window, etc. It's just another one of her visible haunting states. It's not really a game over because this game doesn't have real fail states. Technically.
@@GreenCorgiQueen When she's stalking the player, she normally stays right behind you but if you turn the camera around too fast she'll attack.

Dan claims to remember the playthrough well, but somehow he keeps thinking they haven't gotten this far when they finished it the first time.

Me too…because I first watched it a month ago
although the game was never made, you can tell that PT had such a huge impact on the horror gaming community. the hyper-realism, the first person perspective, and the looping aspect became a trend in mainstream and indie games after this was released. everyone wanted to recreate the experience that was PT, but i don’t think any game will ever be able to come close to it. PT’s just THAT good!
It practically created a new subgenre of horror games, with stuff like Layers of Fear, Visage, and Madison following in its wake, and I would imagine that Resident Evil going first-person was partly inspired by PT, and the early marketing for REVII was very much inspired by it. Before we knew who Mia was, she was just "the creepy lady from the Kitchen demo".

I remember watching the first game grumps playthrough of PT with my girlfriend, we both screamed at every jumpscare and then laughed so hard at Dan being even more scared than us. Game grumps was such a big part of our time together, we'd watch it after work and cry with laughter together. She died last year. I know she would have loved this, thanks for everything you do guys, this re-visit means a lot. Also it's still hilarious!!

They simulated the game from start to finish and did an "out of body" run. Guess what they found out. She's behind you, just out of view, from the moment you wake up in the roach room. (Wish I was kidding, but it's true)

They didn't simulate anything. They just used a mod to have a third person camera and a free mode camera.
The amazing thing is if you recall, Arin at least had a good knowledge of what was happening in the first video (the bathroom door, for instance). This time, though, he forgot about all of that, but Dan didn't, so Dan's the one helping him remember some things.
Also YESSS THEY GOT THE JUMPSCARE!! Thats the one thing that was missing last time!

@@blueflare3848 They don't! I don't remember the specifics of how it's triggered, but if you watch their old playthrough, they didn't get it! They did see Lisa in the hallway at the end of the episode run towards them, but that's it!
It's super cool to see them react to more of her, as before they only got scripted encounters, minus that one hallway run.
@@blueflare3848nah there's one where Lisa grabs you and takes you down. They didn't get it on their first somehow. I thought it was unavoidable.
I vaguely remember reading back then that there's a jumpscare triggered by turning too fast at a certain point. I also remember Arin very obviously stopping and quickly turning around a lot like he was expecting a jumpscare, and I always assumed he was trying to trigger it on purpose, but failed.

Cant believe how hard Konami fumbled the bag with this and Kojima. This little demo basically set the template for every horror game of last 10 years... and they earned exactly 0 dollars from that.
It’s one of the biggest tragedies of the decade it STILL gets me so unbelievably infuriated and depressed like I genuinely can’t get over the fact we could have had the most unforgettable and star studded silent hill comebacks ever. Instead we got… Norman reedus astronaut babysitter simulator.

It’s so incredible to me how this game, which is only a demo, still remains to be one of the most iconic horror game experiences
These guys made a proof of concept just to demonstrate how cool their take on Silent Hill *could* be, blew everyone's minds with it, fundamentally altered the entire landscape of indie horror for an entire decade, and Konami looked at all that and said "nah"
I love the idea of Dan and Arin existing in Silent Hill, and despite being in the dark shadow dimension of eternal torment, hey have a team of ghosts just nonchalantly telling them how to escape
I adore that they have the same energy as the initial playthrough. Arin nonchalantly doing his thing, Dan freaking the fuck out. My favorite of their dynamics!

P.T. might not exist as a full game, but Kojima is making a new game with Jordan Peele that during the announcement used P.T. style imagery, so we may get something close to what Silent Hills was going to be... maybe with 10 times more cutscenes though
All of the assets and ideas eventually ended up in Death Stranding, the street section at the end during the reveal is the main through street in Port Knot City

I finished middle school, graduated high school, graduated college, and got my dream job in the time between PT play throughs. Insane.
There's something funny but exciting of finally seeing the reveal 10 years later given the context of what happened
10 years ago I was watching this at the gym and in a loveless relationship. Since then I got dumped, started over, met a new guy, got a master's degree, changed careers, bought a house, and got married. 1st anniversary coming up. It's great you guys are still doing this show and tracked down a copy of this!

I love how Danny started out mostly chill about it, just playing along and joking, then immediately switched back to panic mode when spooks happened.
So did I 😭 started out feeling all nostalgic and happy having forgotten how much of a nightmare this is and now I wanna die lmao
10 years and not one clone of this demo ever came close to it. The sound design, lighting and atmosphere are on a level only industry veterans can pull off. Such a shame the full game never happened.

For anyone wondering, Ship of Theseus is a thought experiment where you replace the damaged boards of a ship one by one until you have replaced every component of the ship. At what point does it stop being the original ship? Its like how human cells are constantly dying and being replaced and at a certain point your body contains zero cells that it contained when you were born, so physically you are literally not the same person you used to be right down to your very skeleton.

Honestly, the fact that- even after all these years- Arin still has the uncanny ability to instantly pick up on Dan being freaked out about something and make it A LOT WORSE is a true testament to their friendship. People who can really, truly make life Hell for you are the ones you trust the hardest. It's nothing malicious, for sure, but it's just really funny that seemingly without really paying attention, Arin can screw with Dan THIS HARD. Holy shit. 11 years ago I was going through an awful breakup. It was y first adult relationship, and I thought I'd never find anyone who would love me again. Watching Game Grumps and NSP videos was a huge part of my healing process. I started seeing a new person, and we bonded over our shared love of GG. I remember watching videos from this era together and falling in love. We're celebrating our 10 year anniversary this year with a trip to LA and a cruise. I graduated high school, dropped out of college, did an entire tour in the navy, and went back to college between these two playthroughs. Thats wild.
When the original video came out I was living with my parents with no full-time job, about to go to college, had one dog, and didn’t really know what I wanted to do in life.
Now, I own a duplex with my brother, have a cat, work as a shift supervisor at a pet store, and after graduating college with a a degree in theatre, I do community theatre primarily acting in plays.
Crazy how so much has changed yet the Grumps are still here ❤
