Anyone else here because you've heard stories of people comparing cougar screams to a woman screaming?
They might be thinking of a red fox. They actually sound like women screaming.
I think that depending on the cat that they have been compared to a woman screaming, especially their high pitched warning screams.

We have them here in east central Alabama, even though the authorities claim we don't. We hear them and see them and find tracks.
A bit unnerving, especially when you have to walk to your vehicle in the dark.
Chewacla State park in Auburn has a couple and we told the rangers about it. They admitted they knew about them but still to this day do not have one single posting warning campers or hikers!🤬😡 Our property backed up to the park and we lived in a NICE neighborhood. Lived there 30+ years and heard the screams often!

Kinda glad though, I fish, camp, hike, hunt and work in the woods and mountains a lot. I actually don't know how I'd react if I do run into one, part of me would be major fear, the other part would be frozen awe.
Heard one at night mountain biking along the river, scared the hell out of me the way it was moaning, screaming and crashing through the bushes I thought sure I rode upon a heard of Zombies, never did see it but man… you want to talk about adrenaline!!! I tell you what!

Dude I'm like 90% sure I just heard the low growling outside tonight. Never heard anything like it in my life and it scared the shit out of me. Our porch light has been out for months... walked outside to take a piss. Was about done when I heard this low growling from somewhere to my left. Maybe I walked out and startled it. Pitch black so I couldn't see anything my eyes hadn't adjusted at all. I talked tough then back peddled in the house as quick as I could and freaked out to keep my house cat from going outside lol. Had to be one of these things unless bobcats or something else sounds similar. Went back out with a gun and flashlight because I wanted to see for myself if that's what it was but I didn't see anything but I did hear something in the woods. Wow!

You get to look at the stars, breathe fresh air, and hear the crickets. I can wash my hands quicker afterward since I didn't touch my toilet. Cats get to go in and out of the house more often / gives me the opportunity to check on them to see if they want back in if they're outside.

My ex-gf and I saw a young cougar on a hiking trail about a 50 yards in front of us once. I was in awe and scared sh*tless to be honest. We slowly backed away and it didn't pursue us.

Appreciate this…there were several large cat sightings on the big island of Hawaii in the last couple months. I heard an unexplainable terrifying sound with my son and his mother about a decade ago…pretty certain it was a cougar after listening to this. My neighbor heard it again just recently, right before the sightings. When I described the sound I heard to him he said that was exactly what he heard. Said he was scared to mention it to anyone because they’d think he was crazy. My other neighbor said his cattle were all uncharacteristically spooked around the same time frame. For years I thought there was some kind of demonic pig living in the jungle near us. Because wild pigs were the only known large animal capable of making such a loud sound here. Oddly I was relieved to find out it was most likely a cougar. Lol. At least it’s not supernatural, and the wild pigs are out of control here so I don’t mind having something else eating them. The island wilderness is too expansive for hunters to keep their population in check

Big cats are not native to Hawaii, and are not even legal to own there. So unless you heard a mountain Lion from a zoo, it was not a roaming Mountain Lion.

When I was in high school there was legends of a panther roaming part of Maui. I knew several people who swore they saw it and heard it. There’s video evidence of the cougar on the big island it was on the news. And yes I heard the thing. It was eating my neighbor’s cattle specifically the new born calves

These roam our yards where I live 😂 if ever encounter a cougar nevrr run, act big and scary, be loud. Fight back if necessary. They are more afraid of us than we are of them for the most part. We have the largest concentration of cougars in North America here. It's unnerving sometimes but it is what it is. Just heard one screaming in the night out my window. 🤷😳

Came here because I heard a sound out in the night, and then I heard the neighbors dog barking, and then I took me and my doggo back in the house as quickly as possible. For context I live on an island in Florida. I was kinda worried my neighbor wasn’t going to have a dog in the morning, so I called them to let them know what I’d heard, and they’d already brought their dog in by the time I called because they heard the same thing I did. It was either a bobcat or a cougar, and frankly I don’t care which, though cougar is less likely. Regardless, all animals have been safely stowed in their sleeping receptacles (my bed), and I’m tempted to go back out and investigate a little, but it’s not worth my life if it’s a cougar, so I think I’m gonna stay inside tonight and call our local rangers in the am, see if they can come check for prints or something. We live by the shore and there’s lots of mud, so maybe they’ll find something. If they do, I’ll comment back here with confirmation!

We live on a mountain and hear them in the ravine behind our house all the time. They have even been spotted at my daughters school in the evening when the janitors are there. I guess that’s how it goes when you live on a mountain lol

Aint never heard no cougar, but in the 1960s, my sister & i were watching a waterfall in Canada while our dad changed a flat tire, we heard this loud growl behind us (less than 10 feet), turned around to see a bobcat ready to pounce on us. Yeah, we sprinted back to the car PDQ!!

I've heard the loud scream at night in the rain with my cousin outside my house..we were out partying and hanging out having a chew before we went in and crashed out...my cousin never feared anything, we looked at eachother and ran back to the house...i had my window open/no screen..jumped through and ran and let my cousin in the back door.
It sounded like it atacked something or was fighting with something up the hill..it screamed and was coming down the hill fast. We grabbed my guns and went outside with flashlights, all we could see were eyes shining, peeking around up in a tree. We went back in, f that.

It seems like cougars mountain lions and bobcats all have the same or similar sounds but there are small differences and the cougar seems the most terrifying. These animals are why I don’t go hunting in the morning. I know chances are they will run as soon as they see me but still I’m not tryin to have a heart attack at 7:00 in the morning

I live with my sister at the time it was called a trailer park we live in and I was going to bed and hear something outside it sounded like a weird screaming and I hear it again it was couger cat so warn all the neighbors to keep an eye out for their kids because their kids would play outside I didn't want to scare anybody but try to be protected to others.

Very rare in SC but there are a few. BUT... Bobcats are found throughout the lower 48 states, but are rare in many upper midwestern states. They are found throughout South Carolina, being most abundant in the Coastal Plain, but apparently increasing in the Piedmont.

I had a cougar buddy when I was a student at SIUE.
Her name was Chimega.
She had a greeting for me, that I learned to imitate.
Best I can write it is "Ow". Actually somewhere between "Ow" and "Argh". Low in the throat grunt sound. Accompanied by much the same actions of a house cat in friendly mode.
I learned to imitate the sound and tried it on cougars in zoos.
It does get their attention. Usually big eyes when they come up to look at me. Curious postures.
Once, after listening to bobcats playing at the zoo, I made that sound, but pitched closer to the tonal qualities I heard them make as they were playing. One of them leaped onto the chain link at the same level as my head and gave me the big eyed stare.
I have noticed that a house cat makes a similar (but proportional) sound, in much the same intent(?), but they're not quite so shocked when I answer them. 🤣
🤣 Incidentally, I can also imitate a cougar purr. That can really get a zoo cougar stirred up!

I was in the woods once in the Cascade mountains near the Oregon California border and I had one walk up to me and it's just like a big old house cat that won't hesitate to make you its meal so I was just nice to it and I reached out to pet it and feed it the fish I caught if only I could adopt it as a guard dog or cat my bad did not mean to offend any big cats reading this
