  • So this week had a bit of a surprise for us! While it didn't go as expected, we are very intentionally sharing the experience with you.
(And since we film ahead several weeks, not to worry - you'll still get new skills every Sunday. We're already back in action 🤘)
One of the major things that drove us to create this series is that we wanted to offer content that's honest and real. We know that a huge barrier to learning skills is starting with unrealistic expectations, and then becoming discouraged as a result. Truly learning these new skills is a process and doesn't happen in an hour or a day.
We certainly could have dumped this footage and not mentioned it; maybe that would "look better" for us as a coaching organization. But our mission is to be genuine and document Linnea's journey toward her goals exactly as they happen; not in a highlight reel where everything looks easier than it is.
Each person has their own personal risk tolerance, and you do your best to make choices that align. It's important to acknowledge the risks you're taking, and be prepared mentally for the possibility (and consequences) of a crash. While these jumps are small and low risk for an actual injury, sometimes you land on the far end of the bell curve. We'll be committing to full face's for future jumping, dropping, and steep descents, and encourage you to do so as well; especially as we ramp up the skills and speed.

    ABOUT SIMON LAWTON
Following his own Pro Downhill mountain bike racing career, Simon Lawton (Owner and Founder) has spent the last 25 years analyzing the top riders in the world to understand the tiniest details that contribute to their greatest successes, and also any weaknesses that are holding them back. With an exceptional understanding of kinesiology, Simon has developed his own teaching curriculum that explains the incredible relationship between human and machine. He has trained top pro mountain bike racers across the world, and his foundational techniques apply equally to beginner riders. His on-bike drills allow you to break down complex skills on the bike and develop correct techniques.

    ABOUT LINNEA ROOKE
Linnea has been racing locally in the pro category, but until this year she had almost no formal training and was held back by major gaps in her technique. While she was able to carry speed well on straight downhills and high-bermed turns, she lacked foundational cornering skills and was timid in the air. In Feb 2020, she met up with Fluidride to help with a filming trip in Baja, and was fascinated by Simon's teaching methods. Wanting to be part of this mission, she left her career in healthcare in July 2020 to officially join the Fluidride team as COO. We started filming this series to document her journey of cleaning up bad habits, adding new skills to her toolkit, and chasing her dream of riding with style.

Watching that hard fall was difficult, but then you were so calm and seemed ok, and I was relieved, then you took stock and discovered something was not right, but still you were calm and I was holding out hope that everything really was ok.
    Then-no, it really was broken.
The ups and downs were crazy.
And then having some fun at the truck with Simon the “task master” was great.

As said earlier " welcome to the club" we're glad to have you aboard. The entry fee is steep but strangely worth it. I've had four broken collarbone over the years 2 on bikes.
An unseen sniper root and a bad landing into a unforseen obstacle, always when you don't see it. Ive helped out many many injured riders with shoulder issues. Your calm and collected demeanor from impact to entering the hospital was inspiring. Seriously ive carried out burley tough guys out who weren't even close to as hurt as you were. Bitching and moaning the whole way out. Blaming this and that and owning none of the accident 🙄. As all those before said a hundred different ways you are special it takes a very strong person to exhibit that kind of awareness of the situation and acceptance without panic or hysterics. I would ride with you anywhere in any situation.
Thank you for sharing this darker side of our sport with such class, integrity, and laughter.

And then you try to shame me and tell I dont have a brain or that I'm an unsafe rider yet have no context to make that opinion of me. Damn, sorry to see anyone injured. Shows how it can all go off the rails in the blink of an eye. I'm 50 and just learning to properly jump. Took a little spill last week and ganked up my shoulder (the other is separated from learning to crash while snowboarding last winter!) and gave myself a bloody nose. These are the things that keep us humble. It might look a little over the top, but any time I'm doing anything with wheels off the ground I'm fully padded and wearing a full face helmet. Totally worth it.

Dr Basamania at OPA in Seattle does a minimally invasive repair of collarbones--he inserts a rod inside your collarbone which can be removed later. You'll heal faster than if you get the bigger incision/plate/screws method and have likely have fewer issues down the road. Just be sure you move that arm as soon as possible after the surgery or you might end up with a frozen shoulder and a longer rehab to get your range of motion back. I hope you have a speedy recovery.

Bummer. As I watched Linnea go over the handlebars, flash back to two years ago when I did the same and broker my collarbone too (but on the end/tip). That stinks. I needed surgery. Metal plate and screws still in my shoulder. 66k in medical bills. 6 months recovery. But - been riding for 18 months. Back on it. It was the first bone I broke in my body at age 50 after riding MTB for 25 years. Happens (when we go in the air). Impressed with how calm Linnea was. I think 90% of collarbone breaks can heal without surgery. Hope she is in that group (did not look good on the x-ray). Wishing Linnea a fast and full recovery.
