  • Halfway through Season Nine, halfway through Jo Grant's time on the show AND halfway through Jon Pertwee's...
This story feels something like a checkpoint then, not least because it was one of the stories of the 1992 repeat season, a formative run of Doctor Who for me given it was my first experience of many stories and even some Doctors.
So does that childhood nostalgia give The Sea Devils an unfair advantage? Or is really that good?

watched sea devils not at age 8 but age 6, and it was the original showing in '72. pertwee was my first doctor and pertwees voice and an image of bessie is what comes to mind when I think 'doctor who'. its been what? 52 years. I have always remembered this story vividly and while I've watched marathons several times over the last 20 or so years this one always prompts the same thought when it comes up: 'ah yes... 'proper' doctor who'. troughton is my favourite iteration of the doctor, but pertwee's era comes a close second for me, and the acting, story, and even the devils' silly foam costumes in the sea devils plays a big part in that. this one is MY childhood memory, the one that committed me as a lifelong fan for half a century. but troughton is still the best ;-)

Always glad to find someone else who appreciates Malcolm Clarke's innovative score. As a fan of avant-garde electronic music, it's always been one of my favourites.

@ftumschk I have a soft spot for the score also. It's not *all* like the most dissonant parts, those merely serve as part of the whole.

Probably the most dominant of my early Who memories, probably on account of the repeat "feature lenghth" showing and the fact that it was the first Target novelisation that I was bought!
    An absolute classic!

It really is peak Doctor Who, the quintessential Pertwee story but without Unit present which actually refreshes the format.

So even by the showing in the early 90s The Sea Devils was the most repeated classic story shown. It had the Christmas 72 omnibus repeat and then an unscheduled repeat in 74 to replace cricket. We got enough notice that I took photos of the screen and developed them in my Dads darkroom. The Sea Devils was also the cover and main section of the very first factual book on the programme - the Making of Doctor Who. So I think it is very interesting that for childhood memories and public perception, the Christmas omnibuses repeats seem to be the best remembered for the Devil, the monsters coming out of the sea, the one with giant maggots, the one with giant spiders, Davros. Far more so than the two story summer repeats from the previous season we got in the late 70s.And let’s not forget the cast of the submarine led by Maester Enrico Rassilon himself, Donald Sumpter.

'presented with a stranger spouting nonsense about being personal friends with HORATIO NELSON before coming round to the reality of the situation and behaving ADMIRABLY' - this level of articulate wit is part of the reason I love this marathon.

Thought people might think I was being a bit insufferably smug there but I'm glad you appreciated it!

This is probably my third favourite third doctor story right after The invasion of the dinosaurs and Inferno. I just love everything from the action, the suspens, and the doctor and the Master's dynamic in this one. I was never a fan of the Sillurians so I did expect to not like this one, and was shocked by how brilliant this episode was

Probably the best "straightforward action" Pertwee story, although weirdly it does kind of demonstrate why that format works better without UNIT, as the doctor can be pushed into more dangerous situations. But yes, everyone on top form, done about as well as the show can do this sort of thing!

I definitely prefer this one over the Silurians. Silurians just drags on a bit for me, but Hulke perfected his idea here.

It's a shame they never put dr who and the pescatons on tv, and was only on lp which I listened to regularly when I was young.

You can tell a lot about someone by if they prefer Doctor Who and the Silurians or The Sea Devils.
    Probably

Idiots from a Ministry were quite popular in 70s...there was another in Claws from Axos🎩

It was a needed break from unit tbh. As much as people complained about base under siege in the 2nd, the 3rd was almost an endless cycle of master/alien/unit earth set story and it was a bit annoying at times 🫣🫣🫣🫣

The only Modern Day Pertwee to not feature UNIT (though they have a good stand in)🎩
