Her dancing looks really good from the little you can see in the trailer, and she seems like an expressive actress, if only they hadn't covered up her face and head in that... thing.
your comment on “thank you for bringing musicals to the big screen and making them accessible to a wider audience but did it HAVE to be CATS” is EXACTLY what my first reaction was
I mean...they've taken a shotgun to the head of every other major Lloyd-Webber musical out there. I feel like the only stage-to-screen musical from him wherre the movie actualy hit its mark has been Evita.
I've always said that the only two good things about cats are the costumes and the dancing. What is the point of making a movie of the show if you don't use the costumes and don't have professional dancers.
101vaporeon Victoria is played by a professional prima ballerina in the London Ballet, and a lot of the ensemble is comprised of pro dancers so i think it's going to be awesome!
Yes the concept art reminds me of the animated films like Secret on Nimh, Oliver and Company, An American Tail, The Rescuers, and All Dogs Go to Heaven. It would have been soooo much better done in that way.
i absolutely loved Cats growing up. No kidding, I watched the 1998 DVD every day, sometimes twice, I've seen it twice at the West End, front seat. I have the Jellicle Cats poetry book by T S Eliot. It was so crucial to my formative years... and this movie trailer just confuses me. I was fine with it until Rebel Wilson. Why is she there? Is she meant to be the comic relief character, to bring in the kids? No child will want to see it simply because of Rebel fucking Wilson!
I've heard people (idk if they're furries themselves or if they just know furries) talk about how if furries worked on the designs for Cats (and Sonic, for that matter), then they wouldn't have been so terrifying, because furries know how to anthropomorphize animals without making them look creepy/uncanny.
I think the reason they chose to not go for animation is because they want to keep all of the dance numbers, and for good reason because CATS is really a dancing show (90%) and a really good one at that. I am very fond of the original choreo by Gillian Lynne, not as much with the new choreo by Andy Blankenbuehler because his choreo lost a lot of the original's cat-like quality (though his choreo for Hamilton is fantastic). I think CATS found its perfect medium in theater and is one of those shows that should stay as such. If they want to put it on screen, then a direct-to-video like the 1998 film would be the only way that would work, but it's been done before so I can see why they don't want to repeat that. Yes, CGI is dreadful, and don't even get me started on the casting. As a fan of CATS, I can tell you that I am not at all excited to see this trailer. However, I am willing to give it the benefit of a doubt because I have fond memories of the original show and the music and am counting on the fact that when the musical first premiered on West End, it was met with similar hate from the critics but then went on to be so beloved by the general public. Perhaps this movie will surprise us all when history repeats itself (highly doubt that lol)

@@sion-dafyddlocke9913 You just gave aus fantastic setting for this kind of look to actually work. Dr. Moreau would be the perfect place to feature this particular brand of CG and have it be effectively terrifying.
I genuinely love cats, mainly bc of nostalgia goggles and stuff, and I was so excited that Cats was coming to the screen. But once I actually thought about it and witnessed how it has played out so far, I kinda hate that this is a thing.
Here’s what I don’t get the solution for this was so simple. MAKE. IT. ANIMATED. Stephen Spielberg was attached at one point to produce a version and it was going to be 2d animation. Some of the concept art for it is online and it looks great!
I don't like the stage show. I disliked what Hooper did with Les Mis so much that I left the theater at the end of Act I. But what makes my skin crawl in this trailer, more than any of that, more than the alien zombie cats, is Jennifer Hudson long-noteing the lead song to death. Feels like she has no idea what she is actually singing about. It's a "look what I can do" performance, not an "I'll break your heart with this song" performance. I'll take Anne Hathaway over this any day of the week. PS : Tommy, it's good to see you again. Hope you are well. I've missed you.
You’re not a fan of the lyrical genius that is “So this is this, and that is that” ... I get tears in my eyes everything I hear the meaningful lyrics “So first, your memory I'll jog And say: A cat is not a dog”
Exactly! I also don't like the idea of it being an obvious storyline with more text than song. With song it leaves more room for interpretation. And with a female Old Deuteronomy it changes some of the message/moral.
I love cats, I looooove cats. This movie looks awful and I could not possibly be more hype. However, this is the second movie coming out where Judi is appropriating a male character I deeply care about so idk that’s a weird trend that needs to stop. (The other is commander root in Artemis fowl)
Gonna comment again even tho I'm not expecting it to happen......could you please make video talking about/reacting to The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals? I really want to hear your thoughts on it!
I saw Cats with my mom and we left during the intermission. Show got boring pretty quickly and it was a beautiful summer day outside and we realized what we would rather be doing. Memory was a pretty great song and that’s pretty much all we found worthwhile about the show.
I suggest that, before rushing to judgement about this trailer, you READ Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats by T. S. Eliot. Then go find the earliest interviews with Andrew Lloyd-Webber on the production of the original stage play. Next, find the various cast shots of the evolution of the cat costumes. Finally, watch "Cats" the DVD. and make sure you watch the special features. This isn't about your angst. In point of fact, you've NEVER been exposed to a full moon and the cat cacophony of group howling on a fence just under your bedroom window, Tomcat supremacy/alpha cat battles, or female feline seduction vocalizations and posturing, have you?? This is about a talented poet who showcased the behaviors of cats (and we can all recognize a pet cat or two we've had over the years) through poetry and the talents of a respected musician (Andrew Lloyd-Webber has an impressive education behind him), who managed to make it into a cohesive story. If you can't appreciate the athletics of "CATS" and the vocal requirements of the cast, perhaps you shouldn't be critiquing the show. This review of yours is a CATastrophe.
The worst part of this has got to be the "costumes". Where's the fluffiness? Where's the variety of colors? These and the clothing helped the audience tell who's who. Taylor Swfit's Bombalurina looks too much like Victoria. Same thing with Macavity and Tugger. At least in the 1998 film who were able to tell Bomba, Jemima and Demeter apart thanks to the fur color and the makeup. And what have they done to Munkustrap?!
This was as delightful as your podcast episode on Cats (I'm almost sorry you guys already suffered through this musical, and didn't have the movie along)... But, really, the trailer is bad. It's creepy af. It made me more bothered than the new Lion King, which was my "why the hell is it singing? It's an animal-shaped animal!" of the season.
... I really wish they would have gone the Lion King or Pixar or Aristocats approach and just Animated it and made them "real" cats instead of the middle section of an Animorphs cover. They could have still gotten all the big stars to voice the cats! but nah son, if its animated how are we gonna show Rebel Wilson's quirky physical comedy and Taylor Swift's face
"Just animate it and make it a Pixar style movie..." They can't because Cats isn't about the plot or characters, really. At its heart it's a dance piece - dance and spectacle. Dance is very human - it doesn't translate well into animation. We want to see the ballet technique and the tap rhythms - that's where the entertainment comes from. Animate it and the entire reason the show exists is gone. To their credit they kept the dance focus. But the more they turned them into realistic cats instead of professional performers in elaborate Vegas-style cat costumes, the weirder they made the fact that they were doing human movements covered in actual cat hair. In defense of the project, let me just say that on the soundstage the performances of the actors and dancers must have been thrilling. I'm sure they all left the set thinking that they had put something classic down on film. If we could have seen *that*, instead of the way they were all thrown into the uncanny valley with post-production CGI painted on, it might have been a much more entertaining experience.
Not a big Cats fans to begin with, but the theatrical productions beats what is shown in the trailer. I just like musical theater just because I loved it in high school and secretly wish I could have done it in real life. So, yes I think you are right and always have found your comments helpful and informative. Don't give up on doing what you do. A big fan.
I, too, have been talking mad shit about the Cats movie, but am still excited to see it. The visuals are a treat for the eyes and the songs are bops. If we all just watch it as a string of music videos featuring humanoid cats rather than a narrative film, I think we'll all be okay....
I feel partially responsible for this because I jokingly dared you to make a reaction video when you tweeted that you hadn't seen it. But at the same time, I don't regret it. If I had to see that cursed trailer, everyone should.
I know there's a Superman Musical already (from what I'e heard, a bad one) but could we please get another one? I'll take an X-Men musical over this. Audra McDonald can be Storm. She'd crush it.
I really don’t like Cats The Musical, but the movie could be ok if they just made those faces, ‘cat’ faces, not human-cat faces, that just makes it creepy.. Also you’ve gotta worry for James Cordan... The hand emoji to this ... is he going through some weird mid-life crisis or...?
On the flip side, I am a very big fan of Cats and, yes indeed, those faces are horrible and terrifying. Somehow this film fucked up its character design this much.

ALW is usually only as good as his lyricist. In this case, his lyricist had been dead for nearly 20 years.
Good to have you back, Tommy. 🤗
There is an Uncanny Valley aspect at work
Angela McGowan it’s an uncanny Mariana Trench. Evidently it’s okay to look like extras from “ The Island of Dr Moreau” just as long as they don’t look “animated”
@@sion-dafyddlocke9913 You just gave aus fantastic setting for this kind of look to actually work. Dr. Moreau would be the perfect place to feature this particular brand of CG and have it be effectively terrifying.
alternate title for this vid: "musicalmash has a breakdown watching the cats trailer"
There are people in my life who think this movie is going to be GOOD. How do I cure them?
I genuinely love cats, mainly bc of nostalgia goggles and stuff, and I was so excited that Cats was coming to the screen. But once I actually thought about it and witnessed how it has played out so far, I kinda hate that this is a thing.
Lol
You actually had a better reaction to this trailer than I did
I despise the stage show
But
This......
If tommy was a cat hed probably be Gus the (Musical) Theatre Cat
I honest to god love it, but I only wish they would have used real costumes instead of CG. That's it
Grumpy cat is rolling in they’re grave
Ohai notification squad.
Am I the only one who didnt mind the Cats trailer? I didnt love it, but I didnt hate it.
You’re not a fan of the lyrical genius that is “So this is this, and that is that” ... I get tears in my eyes everything I hear the meaningful lyrics “So first, your memory I'll jog
And say: A cat is not a dog”
I like this musical a lot, but I do not like the new movie adaption at all.
I don't understand why they didn't use practical makeup and costuming with minimal CGI for their ears and tails.
Exactly! I also don't like the idea of it being an obvious storyline with more text than song. With song it leaves more room for interpretation. And with a female Old Deuteronomy it changes some of the message/moral.
You, sir, are a public hero of culture. The historians will never mention you, but we will not forget.
Memory was a pretty great song and that’s pretty much all we found worthwhile about the show.
im leaving this video 5 minutes in, I win.
Not all UA-cam heroes wear capes.
The Cats movie was so bad it made Tommy come back from the grave
The LEGEND had arrived
I think they jumped the shark over the uncanny valley. Seriously WTF?!?
No Gurl... We Know...It's Awful.
Don’t cast for the names: cast for the dancing
I agree. That trailer’s creepy as hell. I’ll likely enjoy the sound track but the movie... dunno.
They should've just used the costumes from the musical...
Tom Hooper: adding just enough realism to destroy his source material since whenever Les Miz came out.
tommy: i'm sure you'll tell me how much you disagree in the comments
*literally everyone in the comments and their mothers* : i agree
Literally the first time that’s ever happened.
@@MusicalMash tbh i don't think anyone on either side is happy about this remake (the love cats side vs. the hate cats side)
look at the cats revival playbill. they did the same marketing without the eyes because WHYY NOT
They updated it by making the Rum Tum Tugger rap, oh wait...
I feel like I need to give you a hug. But yes, I agree with you. This movie is a hard pass for this musical geek.
Your setup here? Amazing. Like a perspective painting.
I think the problem is it's a whole human face on a cat body. Maybe if they had cat muzzles and whiskers it would be a liiittle more palatable?
"Just animate it and make it a Pixar style movie..."
They can't because Cats isn't about the plot or characters, really.
A big fan.
*Did you sleep well?*
*Did you... have any... dreams about it?*
"Digital fur technology"?? Pray tell us the future uses of this amazing development!
We're turning him into Kevin Lynch, I'm holding off judgement if that's wrong or not...
@6:35 - *hairball intensifies*)
And yet not one mention of Dame Gillian Lynne. She's probably the only reason the show is so successful.
This holiday season you will believe....what?? A man can fly??
“Hamilton is like Cats” ... seems legit 🤔
"The Cats Trailer-Why am I doing this to myself?" I think we're all asking ourselves this question.
Cats is just the delivery mechanism for the song Memory. That's it.
The Amblimation film should have just been made. At least it looked interesting.
I like Cats but the only way I see it working is on the stage. To me the stage costumes are a large part of the appeal.
