  • This was crazy funny to me. I think they are just messing with the Korean Censorship and it is so hilarious. She is trying to be nonsensical as possible so that it would be difficult to pinpoint where and what to pick on. Gotta watch the video till the end. You will get what I am saying.

    Cube don't give justice to soyeon lyrics, considering that soyeon constantly receiving praises for her lyrics. I could care less about those who criticized her for her English lyrics, since it only started during tomboy when in fact soyeon has been writing English lyrics since debut but she ppl didn't hate her for her English lyrics nor pronunciation.
    And soyeon said lyrics is the most important to her, she started writing when she was in 3rd grade and she met her rap mentor when she was in high school and soyeon mentioned that her rap mentor taught her a lot of things in rap including writing lyrics that can melt sincerity.
    Anyway looking forward for more gidle videos. I hope you also make reaction of idle explaining this comeback and the recording bt/s.

      She is one of very few.. and perhaps uniquely talented in creative lyric writer in the idol world. And I can not believe how CUBE does not help non Koreans with decent lyrics. Forget decent, they were horrendous when they do give out translations. It is so bad that I feel like I have to do her lyrics some justice. And I am one helluva lazy old dude. LOL

    Thank you for this loooooong video giving us really good tip on lyrics.
    Many of us (including me), think that the 'Want me your wife but she is' in the chorus, is a playword because when they sing it it REALLY sound like 'Want me to wipe the shit'. And they look at their shoes, like if they walked in sh*t. Sounds like 'If You Seek Amy' song of britney spears, you know ?

    "I'm all grown up now, my daddy"... I was thinking it's an infantile way to say "Don't infantilize me". Men tend to infantilize women, and Kpop tends to perpetuate that.

    Thanks for your perspective of the lyrics! Really learnt some things. About the English, Soyeon has shown in her K/DA and Heat songs she can sing well in standard English grammar & pronunciations. She has mentioned in the past that in her Korean songs she sometimes uses English in a way that's easier for Koreans to sing/chant along to.

    Also, cake is English language Millennial/Gen Z slang for butt. I’m confident Soyeon knows, and it’s no coincidence this is the part in the video where she sticks out her rear.
    Interesting that you mention that the phrase you translate as “babe (or honey)” is a bit old fashioned and used often for spouses - since that seems like another clever choice by her since the song definitely is playing off and mocking the TradWife (i.e. old fashioned)style expectations.
    Thanks for doing this, as it gives a lot of insight and also provides for noticing stuff even if you don’t mention it

    Very good language analysis from you as usual! Do the lyrics also make sense if the "Cream soup" represents accepting traditional wife roles? Sometimes talking to the husband, sometimes talking to the traditional wife, and sometimes talking as themselves? It seems to make more sense with having a full stomach if you accept, vomiting it out if you don't accept, encouragement to eat it all up quickly, having the "cocoroco" or "cocoloco" (coco - chocolate, loco - crazy) flavor added?

    • @komerican-og

      If you look at what they are wearing, it is not sexy or revealing at all. They don't even sing or do any suggestive choreography. Triple or quadruple entendres or not...it is so funny how she is messing with the censorship. I think they had some problems with them in making nxde etc..... and this is what they get. Thank you so much for the breakdown! Always glad for your content!
    It sounds to me like they're using korean double entendres to get around the censors. But when you translate it to english it also uses entendres that english speakers will understand. Like cherry on top which cherry can also be used to describe...well you know. The chop chop chop you mentioned. And even the mention of lips which can describe the ones on the face and the ones not. Sounds to me that in usual Soyeon fashion it can mean whatever you want it to be.
    I saw some translation where the translator seems convinced that the song is about a wife poisoning her husband.
    And then there's the symbolism in the mv itself.

    • @WeisenheimerJack
      @WeisenheimerJack 8 місяців тому +1

      When I heard she Is mmm mmm mmm, my first thought was is she referring to the girl downstairs (if you know what I mean) but also maybe she's also saying I got love for the girlies

    • @komerican-og
      @komerican-og  8 місяців тому +14

      Yes... I feel you can interpret it in so many ways. That is why I told everyone you guys should decide how you feel about it. However, I personally do not think it is something specific like a wife poisoning her husband. My experience with her writing and presentation of her work has given me certain preconceptions, I guess. She is very articulate and deliberate even when she is using vague language and imagery. They seem to fit in certain way with some elegance. I do not see the intricacy that I usually find. In this song, one thing that seem to be constant throughout the song is being chaotic by design. But to each his own... this one made me laugh so hard when I first tried translating it. So I am just happy.

  • @gregstephens

    Thank you for your insight! It helps to hear some alternate translations on some of the phrases and to get some cultural context.
    It's interesting to consider the difference between a direct translation which lets us know the meaning of the words and a more poetic approach which could be used to make a more artistic expression of a song. For example, the lyric might translate to "boldly eat", but with your context of it being meant as an aggressive action, it could be expressed as "voraciously eat" or "devour." Something even more in keeping with the double-entendre might be "ravage". Of course, that all depends on the other words being used and how they fit the rhythm, but it's a fun mental exercise.

    #KBS It's exactly Nxde's lyric: ppl's view so RUDE. If the dirty mind can see WIFE's lyric talking about the betrayal wives suffer, the men's ignorance of their wives and the power used by money makers in a family, and afterall do so many men want other women than their wives in reality. Then #KBS you dare not broadcast Gidle's WIFE?

    this was really interesting!
    your comment on soyeon's intentionally weird english lyrics reminded me of how namjoon has spoken about writing smoke sprite with soyoon, how he plays around and adapts english words and phrases because they evoke a specific auditory texture or associations and because they fit the "gibberish" line that was in the production demo. "want me your wife" maybe sounds odd but it's also really easily understandable and hits the song's theme on the head while matching the beat with concise, one-syllable words. and on top of it, it fits the sort of faux-ditzy persona of the song. 🧐

  • @ashvandal5697
    @ashvandal5697 8 місяців тому +8

    I really appreciate your effort here, however I think you could benefit from potentially putting your thoughts together in a script before filming. I don’t speak Korean at all, but just from reading the English translations I’m pretty happy with my own interpretation of most of the song.
    For instance when Shuhua says “your hands don’t reach the delicate lips, from head to toe, chop chop chop” this is speaking about how men (the man) fails to properly stimulate his woman/wife before intercourse. No for-play. Chop chop chop is an expression for hurry up. So man is just rushing through to get to his own pleasure.
    This song is very sexual. And I see a lot of people either refusing to acknowledge that, or else trying to skirt around the ideas and be as PG as possible. Its not.
    And again, really appreciate your effort here. We need more native Koreans to help us with the language and cultural nuances of Soyeon’s lyricism.

      Wow... You seem to know everything. And like I said, you are free to have your own interpretations. And you seem to be happy with it. I respect that. However, please do not tell me how I should feel or interpret the song. And also let me make my contents my way. I wanted to create contents that are reaction based. I never wanted to make these kinds of videos. It was done so poorly before so I was helping out. I do not want to create scripted content where I am trying convince others of my thoughts. I am just doing my best to translate the lyrics correctly. If you do not like it.. then please don't watch. You seem to be very fluent in English so....you must know that I know this is a very sexual song...right? However, why and for what purpose this was written might be different.

      @@komerican-og ok, you’re taking my comment a little sideways but that’s fine. You said you’re trying to grow your channel so I was just offering some advice in terms of what content I’m more likely to watch. You can decide what you want to do with my feedback. It was difficult to watch this whole video, and I’ve now made the attempt to do so twice since it’s easy for me to space out and miss what you’re saying. You can do whatever you want, and I hope you succeed.
      In an attempt to be constructive though, like I said, I’m fairly confident in my own interpretation of the English translations but the Korean wordplay and cultural intricacies are why I’m watching right now. For instance, while I have a strong opinion why Soyeon says “I cook cream soup” I’m at a loss if cream soup has a Korean cultural significance. Firstly, my American brain asks the question: cream of what? Because we have dozens of cream soups but they’re all cream of mushroom, creamed corn, clam chowder, etc. do Korean’s have a “cream soup”,that this is an understood reference? Secondly, Americans tend to refer to cream as a woman’s c*m when looking at the whole song through a sexual lens, makes a weird sense and is very interesting since people aren’t necessarily going to get that reference until listening to the whole song before it makes sense.
      And yes, WHY did Soyeon do this? Why does Soyeon do any of the crazy moves she makes, keeping the whole industry guessing at every step. Million dollar question.
      Anyways thank you for the video. If you still think I’m badgering you, instead of trying to constructively engage with you, I’ll stop.

That does not mean I lack the mental aptitude to form my theories. I am a guy who has not used English for 30 years or more. It is rusty and it will take too much time for me to make it so that everyone can enjoy my content. I am doing what I can in my spare time to do this and try to be helpful to people.
