  • In this Photoshop digital painting tutorial, we’ll explore edge blending. The division between two areas of color is a crucial challenge for painters. Learning to smoothly render this transition is very important.

I went on a video binge with these tutorials. You are clear and precise. I went for years in classical painting so switching to digital is quite difficult but these make it seem less intimidating. I look forward to practising with your tutorials :)

Thank you so much :'D. I'm in art school and everyone's just expected to know this stuff. No one teaches the fundamentals, but it's posed an interesting challenge and I've been adapting quickly and teaching myself a lot with my professors help. Anyway, this really met me where I was at, I've been doing a lot of flat shading, but traditional is where my love lies. Been trying to figure out how to blend digitally because thats where the industry is right now for the most part.

Since I've delayed putting them on youtube, you'll be seeing a lot more in the near future. There are roughly 250 on Ctrlpaint.com, and soon they'll all be here as well.

ohmygod Where has this video been all my life? ive looked at tutorial and, tutorial and, nothing was helpful. people would make 30 minute videos on how to shade but, the message never got through because they would just go blah blah blah. however, you managed to teach me shading in 4 minutes.

Same here! I also used to firmly believe people just used the smudge tool to blend. Then I got confused as to why all of my art was turning out so blurry and soft edged, even when using a hard brush. Its because the smudge takes away too much of the pigment and just moves it around rather than a smooth blend like this method.
Thank you Ctrl+paint for this great tutorial. After hundreds of videos sourced elsewhere, I finally understand the method from this one 4 minute video.
