@@dareizm9531 the rap battle itself is a little fabricated, em said that his version of this was the rap Olympics in ‘97 I think. might’ve been ‘98, but either way, he lost at the final round and it was a big blow to him at the time

PS: That last round was genius. Not only does Em take EVERYTHING that Papa Doc could have said about him, but flipped it into actually insulting himself, showing the crowd that it simply didn't matter or affect him in any way. Meaning that you can't even use it to "diss" Em because Em already ADMITS that it is something "bad" against himself and still goes into Papa Doc's own issues of being "Clarence" attempting to present himself as a "rapper from the hood".
Basically, Em stole his ammo, removed the sting, presented new evidence and then DARED his opponent to go out there and try to diss Em with "new material" on the spot, which he couldn't do because he knew nothing about Em outside of what Em had already said... which is why he 'choked' at the end. Which actually makes the whole movie's story complete. Em (Rabbit) goes from choking and booed off the stage in his first appearance to having the crowd rooting for him as his opponent chokes, giving Em the win. Perfect symmetry.

I don’t think it was just about that. I think the audience could relate to Eminem more than they can relate to his opponent. His bare honesty and believability struck a chord in everybody. Everybody has something embarrassing, somethings shitty, something they’re not proud of, but they will walk around pretending they don’t give a shit or that those things never happened and keep it on the down low. Eminem just laid it all out there and people respected him for it because they could see themselves in him.

times he was livin in it was completely opposite to that. he had to be 100x times better than someone next to him for people to consider him at least as somewhat of a rapper. he was not getting anywhere for years and years exactly because he was white and dre has said it in interviews many times that he did not know how many racist people he was surrounding himself with. they were trashing him and telling him to drop em because he was white. but then when he got the hype in the beginning, yes, after he started selling records because of that, because he introduced this genre to white people all around the world. so back then, it was only the worst to be this color in the industry, he just turned out to be exception cause he is one of the best. (he's name as a favourite rapper is the most said by the greatest of all time starting from a golden era and times after there is a research done about it.) he has really the biggest legacy. (not talking about white hip hop artists before him cause non of them were this big). and how many records you sale don't mean nothing in this game it doesn't define if you're good or bad, if you know hip hop, you'll know it's because of the respect he got from the people who mattered and matter the most in this genre because they truly understand how great he is.
also this is the way he came up. he was an underground battle rapper so this what you're seeing was real and it was worse and harder than that. he was doing it for years and even aside the fact others saying he couldn't do it because he was white he still won so many times. on top of that he had a real hard life since the childhood. movie is not completely based on his real life events though.

Battle rap like this was refined tho like this to what it is now during the 90s and early 2000s (ems era)Era. Battle rap still exists today. Codea, Pop Smoke, Kendrick, J Cole, Bas, Cal Scruby all have participated. It's always been part of the culture. Em DID start as a battle rapper! 8 Mile was loosely based on his life. During filming on this movie, Em brought in battle rappers from Detroit and got paid well just standing in the audience there were more battle rappers that did not make the final cut. Fun Fact: Anthony Mackie was approached by Em and Em was chatting with him and wanted to "get to know" Anthony better. To make a long story short, all the rap that he did about Papa Doc, was about Anthony. Anthony did go to a private school, and parents with a good marriage. That look Anthony had, was genuine .

But, you can react to the behind the scenes from the bonus ish on the DVD..
To keep the extras involved for the shooting, they had real battle rappers spit & picked 5 to go at Em for bonus footage. One of them was Marv 1.. em wasn't supposed to rap. They were trying to have him save his voice for shooting. So the others spit at him & he just kinda mouthed words.. but the crowd started boo'ing so he turned the mic on & battled them.
Been following your pops for yrs, seems like a really good dude & Father.
Keep getting that grind on. Wish ya nothing but success in all ya do. ✌

@@stijn8588 that's not true. Us older hip hop heads didn't like the way the genre was going. Especially those who grew up through the golden age of hip hop late 80's-mid 2000's.
Had a bunch of "lil's" biting Wayne's style of spitting but gave no content.
A lot of it sounded the same, way too much autotune and seemed only to be bout a hard beat and catchy hook.
Sry but that's not hip hop.
We had our vibe type of hip hop but the majority was heavy on content & storytelling.
      Not just flossing type ish.
If you were biting someone else's style & faking the life u claimed in your lyrics, you'd get clowned on and ran out the game.
Using ghost writers was heavily frowned upon too. (If you were claiming to be a top tier lyricist.. Dre never hid that he used ghost writers & he was known as the Dr. For his production, not his spitting. Cube was the elite lyrist of NWA & still in my top 5.
I'm not trying to knock the young cats hustles. But, if you know history about the culture around hip hop, someone else can't put your own life & pain in the lyrics.

I do think the trap and melodic markets are very oversaturated, but thats just because its the mainstream.
And about the term mumble rap. The genre has a history of mostly racist people discrediting it, and i think the term is another example of that. So as a big hiphop fan i just see it as disrespecting the genre you love so much if a hiphop fan uses it.

Em's point wasn't that anything about "Clarence" was inherently bad (nothing wrong with having parents that love each other and have a good marriage. But it's more common among people who have a higher income. His life isn't filled with the constant stressors that many of the people in "the 313" do.
So, he was pointing out what a poser he was. Clarence was a hypocrite, pretending to be something he wasn't.
As for Em's character dissing himself, it's not that he's just dissing himself. He's robbing his opponent of ammo. Like the character Tyrion says in Game of Thrones, if you know what your weaknesses are, and you own them, you can wear them like armor so they can't be used to hurt you.
It's actually an extremely wise and clever way to absolutely shut down most bullies or opponents. Because wth can they say if you say, "Yep. You're right. And yet I'm still here, with my head held high, because I'm a human being with basic dignity because I'm honest about my experience and who I am.
You, however, are a hypocrite trying to act superior to others while trying to be something you're not. So who's the fool?"

That first round was CLOSE! Even though I still think Em's 1st battle was weak, he clearly had the ability to turn the audience against his foe. And sometimes, in rap-battles, it really is how much you can influence/direct the crowd that actually matters more than anything else. Especially when it is something you do in your 'opening round'. Near the end, if you don't already HAVE the audience pulling for you, they aren't going to 'flip' unless you CAN bring some hard bars to impress them.

Before the last round Eminem’s friend overheard all the stuff the leader was going to rip him on, so Eminem beat him to the punch, took all his material, left him with nothing to use against him without repeating shit, which wouldn’t have gone over well with the crowd.

On the 45 seconds rule. You notice it when the second battle starts, there's an intro before they start to drop their bars when the tune's beat starts, that's so they can get a feel for the rhythm. So there's ten seconds of the tune going before they'll have the 45 seconds they're allotted to.
