I found the cassette tape of theirs in a used car that I bought a long long time ago when cassettes and cassette players were in cars lol. So I put that baby in the cassette player and I started playing it. I liked it so much that I ended up playing it for like weeks straight, exclusively. I was never a country fan back then, but they just made such happy sounding music was so much soul and was so much talent. Not only that, their songwriting ability is truly at another level. I mean these ladies are actual artists. Not just pop musicians. Now I was a young dude so it was kind of embarrassing to like it so much. I would turn it down when people were next to my car. I eventually stopped being embarrassed by it and would just blast it and smile at people. I'm a fan... Now of course I'm grown, so I'll be listening to the sappiest song by any artist and I'll just blast it shamelessly. But I'm pretty sure that the Dixie Chicks were the first group that broke that barrier in me
So they changed their name dropping the part that refers to the southern US, but kept the part that is commonly used to objectify women.

I think that everyone is missing the point as to why what was said was so bad. It's not freedom of speech. It was that it was said on foreign land. When people tell me that the chicks careers died, I just laugh at them. Sure, before the incident they were selling like 10-12 million albums on every album, but the 6 million they sold with "Taking The Long Way" was still VERY impressive. Not to mention, they sweeped the grammys winning 5 out of 5 nominations. And then they scored their biggest international hit of all time which one all of the honors and peaked in the top 5. The chicks are one of the most consistent hitmakers of all time.

I believe you Alex! which also makes us Family;) I too am related to Natalie. when my grandparents (on Father's side) took me to my great Aunts house and my sister ( a big fan of Dixie chicks) started pointing out pictures of Natalie all over the house from the time she was born to then current pictures. so my sister of course had to ask and turns out she is like a 3rd cousin on my dad's side of the family. the house we were at was where she grew up. my aunt Sat and told my sister stories of Natalie growing up and even though we will probably never meet Natalie again only having met her when we were too young to remember at family events, it's still just cool knowing. just like knowing it should make You and I Family. by the way do you know how your related, if so I can probably ask my grandma how we would be related. ;)
