If you're looking for a more unique bearded dragon maybe you should look into the super common and amazing Uromastyx. These African lizards like it very hot and dry and are absolutely amazing pets! Maybe a species closer to home? Chuckwallas enjoy many of the same things bearded dragons do with no bugs to be fed! These Lizards are great for warm and dry climates! Ackie monitors are super popular and for good reason! These monitor lizards stay small and aren't too hard to care for. Collared Lizards are smaller but with very bright and vibrant blue coloring. Of course clown agamas or painted agamas are similar but smaller and a great lizard for handling!

I have three Beardies and they're the most loyal, sentient pets I've ever owned. My male beardie, Gizmo is more loyal than any dog or cat I've ever had. He even licks my tears when I cry! They're the best, maybe I'm lucky when it comes to the dragons I got, but they are there for me and I haven't even trained them to. They have no rules and act as if they're trained. Idk what I did to deserve such perfect lol cuties.
one of my cats is named gizmo! she’s lying beside me as i type this xD
You're equating loyalty with an instinctual drive to acquire sodium?

Damn what got you crying gang? It’s gone be okay
I have one. He's my first and only lizard. He is 11 years old and on his way out. It's very upsetting. I won't get another lizard until I have a job and can afford a dangerous wild animals licence (because I live in the UK) so I can get a ghilla monster
i had a uromastyx for about like 18 years growing up. great lizard, sweet personality, very handleable. definitely would want one in my adult life
Which type of uro? :)
@@QueenieKoopa a mali uromastyx pretty sure. we got him when i was very small so i dont remember
Bearded Dragon. We're a retired empty nest couple and my wife absolutely loves him, far easier than a dog which would be fairly taxing energy-wise. Perfect for us, really don't care about being perceived as a herd member.
100%
As a herd member 😂😂bruh you like reptiles you’re not a herd member, love up on him!
@@bassingbasics6621 oh yeah, he lives like the little king he is, he wants for nothing. Peaceful, gentle soul.
Felt. Anxiety ridden new adult. They eat a lot of what I eat so theres always fresh food ( I love fruits and veggies). And gardening has dampened the fear of bugs so I'm not bothered by feeder bugs. And they're soooooo cuddly❤ and theres nothing better than relaxing with a dragon after a rough day.
I love how your not villianizing beardies, there’s tons of people who don’t properly treat beardies, you gave few options that are easier for people who don’t like bugs! Definitely support you ☺️
I got my ackie monitor in October, I absolutely love her. I wish you would have highlighted a bit more just how intelligent they are! She is so inquisitive, and much more active than a bearded dragon, where my beardie used to spend a lot of time basking in one spot, my ackie is always up to something! I think the most intelligent thing she does, is when hand feeding her, I can tell she takes special attention to be careful and not bite me, which opposed to when I tong feed her she is much more ready to attack! I like to spread mealworms throughout her enclosure, it is so fun to watch her forage around, smelling them out with her forked tongue then digging them up for a tasty snack.
Well......I went to my local store, who are absolutely amazing, yesterday with the intention of putting a banana pied ball python on hold as my daughters early graduation present. Well he was sold the day before 😪 but we did find a new baby Zero Morph Bearded Dragon. He's a solid slate grey color with no pattern. Absolutely amazing!!! He comes home in a month!!!
Great job!
They look sooo cool.
Fun fact: Arizona is home to the two largest lizards in the US (if you don't count the escaped tegus in Georgia)! Gila monster and the Chuckwalla :)
Fun fact : Indonesia has the largest lizard in the world :)

Glad you're thinking of getting a clown Agama, they're really underrated. One aspect I think they dont get enough credit for is they're often beautiful and show a huge range of colors. They can go from tan to black, and their back pattern can change from light pink to bright orange depending on their mood.
Never heard of them before this video and your comment. Definitely going to research them. Thanks!
Just a heads up: the added texts and names and such are being covered by the cc’s. It was a bit of a pain in the butt to have to turn the cc’s off and on again and to pause the video every so often. So accessibility wise it might be nice to place the extra info a little higher, depending on what you’d like aesthetically of course
Can't handle collared lizards?? That's news to me, they've always been so incredibly chill in my experience. I was able to to just pile them into my hand when I went in to clean and they just sat there admiring the scenery, and every time they saw me they wanted to start climbing me. Incredibly friendly little guys! Are there just a chunk of collared out there that are horrible to handle that I've missed? I was never told NOT to handle them by any means, at least.
He didn’t know what he was talking about when it actually comes to collared lizards as a pet. They’re amazing to handle and are def not a “Display only Pet!”
I think if people want monitors you can go to apple or I'm pretty sure dell sell them too lol
ha.. haha
Love this! But as someone in the US I feel it is very hard to find captive bred Painted Agamas right now. Especially a verified CB/CBB. Most are field collected and will need treatments for parasites, etc. It took a while for us to find one, but we should have it in March once it is old enough to ship! I also blame Clint for making me want one 😊
good luck :)
Where are you getting yours?
@@juliac3933 There's a Facebook group called Agamidae USA that I'm a part of. One of the guys there posts pics and updates of his clutches that are hatching and I messaged him. 😊
I have field collected Uros and have had them for many years, never treated them for parasites as most of these animals live their entire lives with "natural parasites". My advice to be safe is to Just have them in their own enclosure. I don't think it's as big as deal as people make it out to be. Of course you want to make sure they don't look sick to begin with or don't have any obvious health issues... Otherwise I think you'll be ok :)
@@dundun8323 honestly I had never heard of treating for parasites until I started researching getting a painted agama, but I've seen it a few times that it's pretty standard that you want to treat for parasites, but you probably wouldn't need to if it was an "established captive" individual who had been field collected but in captivity for a while. I just figured I'd mention it since it might not be something people are aware of 😊
Moroccan uromastyx are the easiest if my research is correct. They come from a pretty temperate region of Africa where night time temperatures can be freezing and there regions with snow. They also eat grasses too, lots of grasses and tough herbaceous plants.
We got a baby Moroccan Uromastyx almost 3 years ago. His colors are NEON and so beautiful, they are very hardy. He is a funny guy , he isn't chill like some other lizards but he is very entertaining to watch and feed from tongs. He loves sprouted lentils, dry lentils, different greens and seeds. We do try a variety of veggies and fruits. He doesn't seem to eat much of it though. Except recently some acorn squash.
I have a uromastyx and I always thought they were so underrated. His name is Toby and he is a fricken ✨DELIGHT✨ he’s like a little chunky dinosaur
Hey Adam, so I live here in Canada and have no real following so I can't do much, so I thought I would come to you. Can you direct your viewership to the latest video Clint just posted? Or maybe just kind of parrot him in case there are American fans of yours who don't follow him? With this kind of thing, reach is everything. It effects us too up here, not only because we will get less access to amazing reptiles, but because as I'm sure you know, our government just looooves to parrot theirs.
Hope you at least read this, thanks in advance and have a great rest of your day.
Love the list videos man.
You should look into Omanosaura jayakari! There's a small handful of videos on youtube of them, but I just got a pair and honestly they could be on this list. An interactive little lacerta that eats plants, bugs, and seeds!
I'll check it out
My bearded dragon was AWESOME !! He used to crawl up my stomach and nestle his head into my neck and go to sleep !! I was devastated when he passed away !!
I've only been bitten ONCE by my dragon and it was literally only because he missed his food.. If they're biting you just aren't hangin with them enough imo He also Loved his yellow plastic tong he saw yellow he Knew ooh! Food food food lol
I think frilled lizards definitely deserve a place on this list. Just got one and I think they're everything you could want out of a dragon. Not sure how common they are in the american pet trade though.
they fit for sure
They aren't too expensive in the uk . Around £200. Probably the same in America
If you get lucky and end up with one that decides it likes people, Ackies are kinda like a 12 week old puppy that never grows up. Mine's either eating, looking for food at 90 mph, sound asleep basking, or following me around (doesn't matter if he's in his enclosure or out, if I move, he follows). He even seems to be conscious of how hard he bites, because he goes after his food like an absolute savage, but play fights with my hand, and does these little death rolls to my finger tips without ever leaving a mark on me.
Absolutely adore my ackie, but compared to a beardie they have adhd. Mine is all over the place and so busy. They use me as a jungle gym and there is no chill 😂
same!!
Love seeing wild chuckwallas here in Utah!
awesome!
Had 4 collard lizards. 3 cohabited for there whole lives, and because the store held them and looked after them well, they were as tame and handleable as a beardy. The other one wasn’t, by a stretch 😅 we have presumed that it had an underlying issue as was always a bit nuts and never grew close to the size of the other male we had. Would recommend them as the 3 we had all had brilliant personalities distinct patterning, would definitely have them again. An under appreciated lizard, especially here in the UK
That's why I got a red Bearded Dragon. I didn't want the same old beige, yellow one. There's other morphs like white, zero, black, dark red.
for sure!
I don’t own any reptiles, but I enjoy watching your channel and learning a lot about reptiles and their care. Hopefully I can have one one day . I think beardies and Uromastyx are adorable. I would love to keep a crested gecko or leopard gecko. I went to my first reptile show this year, and I got to hold a leopard gecko, she was very sweet, and I wanted to bring her home so much but was not able to right now but maybe in the future.
I have 2 beardies and it's so so worth it. But I really want a Collared Lizard they're so cute
I'd say any of those lizards you mentioned would be the best. I just have beardies but I do want a crested gecko too. I do have 3 mice as well, we will breed them in the future to have free pinkies. My mice are sweethearts and I'll never overdue them. Maybe twice I'll breed a female then I'll let them retire. I don't want to stress my mice out.
Thank you for making that decision and not getting one if you can't take care of it. All too often that isn't the case sadly. I really hope you can one day live your reptile dream, you seem like someone that really would care well for their pets
Bold of you to assume I don't want a Beardie.
Jokes aside, i've had beardies probably over half of my lifetime at this point.
I wish people wouldn't choose animals based on how "overrated" or "too mainstream" they are.
Go for a companion that best suits you, regardless of how boring it is to everyone else.
hahaha
If you do a video on painted agamas, please feel free to reach out! I've got pics and videos you can use and cN give you my care experiences.
I would love any video you have
@@WickensWickedReptiles I have videos of my male doing "push-ups", hand feeding, egg laying and moving, hatchlings and feedings. I can make what ever you'd like, as long as it doesn't stress them. Just tell me what you'd like and where to send it.
I'm officially a mealworm breder. I used dry coco fibre with some cork bark as well as spinach and cucumber and now I have lots of little mealworms
That is awesome!
Pro tip, just keep them in dry oatmeal. They'll get bigger and have a lot more nutrients.
Add the cucumber or other veggies for hydration of course
In my personal experience, ive noticed that Saharan/Niger Uromastyx's love to burrow.
Additional Ackie Perk: Tired of your Beardie laughing at you offering them a salad? An Ackie is a great alternative because they need no salad! So much easier to toss in some inverts, no bowl required, than become a 5 star chef just for the customer to poop on your food and leave without paying.
Well said
Chuckwallas used to be around in the 1980s and are so cool. I don’t know why they disappeared but I never see them now. I remember them being great pets.
My beardie is just hands down a jerk. He has never enjoyed being handled and after 4 years of handling as much as the both of us will tolerate, I've gotten him to the point where he won't bite and flail/scratch when I need to take him out to clean his cage or bite my hand as I put the bowl down to feed him. The expectation everyone gave me was that they are just super easy lizards and all of them have completely the same personality and will love being handled. I got the odd man out, and it wasn't until I adopted a painted agama that I began to understand the actual joy of owning an agama lizard. I wish I'd have gotten an Uromastyx or just started with the painted agama...
I only have a beardie because someone found her in a horse pasture when it was 40f and raining. She is a lot happier now.
Toadheads! If you want to sacrifice *potential* handleability, for a super unique awesome little species, toadhead agamas are awesome. They also go doot doot doot and shimmy below the substrate and it's cute to watch.
they are also awesome!!
I love beared dragons!!! I have one!!! They are the coolest dragons!!! Why would you say that about them!!!?
I feel like collared lizards are so underrated and so beautiful!
Hey Adam, has little Stevie been chewing on your hands? In each successive video you have more wounds lol.
Bearded dragon is still my favorite species of lizard. Have one as a class pet. He is absolutely amazing. Ended up rescuing two more because of him. Best thing I have done for myself and for my classroom, ever.
Have had lots of reptiles but I always seem to be attracted to the beardies. I believe it is that face and how they seem to genuinely be interested in what I am doing.
Be careful with the collared lizards. They are invasive and I used to catch them as a kid in kansas.
I got two painted agamas (and one Uromastyx yemenensis) from a breeder in Quebec, possibly the same one you talked to. They're so much fun to interact with, with great personalities.
Do they cohabitate?
Sidenote about Uromastyx. 120 degrees = Not nearly as hot as the rocks they sit on. 120 is a good air temp. The ground temp is going to be higher. They like it ridiculously hot.
Clown agamas are awesome. I have 11 atm! With 11 eggs in the incubator.
amazing!!!
But... But.. What about the rankin's dragon... How can you? !(jk)
My petco has a eastern blue tongue wish my house was more accommodating id snatch it up so fast my friend who I got mt bp from opened the tank let me hold it I was so happy havent held a blue tongue since I was at our oetstore when I was like 19

I'm surprised you didn't mention Rankin's Dragon! They're also called Dwarf Bearded dragons here. Almost identical in care needs and it looks like a baby Bearded dragon! Gets to about 10-12 inches 😁

That ackie on the first clip is chunky lol 😆
chunky monkey
Can you do a video of pure insectivore lizards?
Shinglebacks could be a bearded dragon alternative, though they are hard to get outside Australia. Similar size, similar temperature & humidity requirements (overlapping natural ranges), also good to handle. They'd be good for someone who doesn't like dealing with insect feeders too because their diet should be about 80% vegetation and the remaining 20% doesn't need to be live insects, it could be snails, canned insects, eggs, dog food, etc. Some of the subspecies/localities are absolutely stunning to look at.
Bearded dragon is the cutest dragon 💘 I could never not have one 😍 only lizard that can compete with that amount of cuteness is leopard gecko 😆 all lizards are cute tho it' s just that beardies and gecks are cuteness overload to the max, cutest animal on planet earth if you ask me
for sure!

I rarely hear much about Chuckwallas! Wonder why that is? Good video!
I love my beardie, his name is Crowley. About 1 year old now. I’ve had cats and rabbits my whole life, when my bunny Meinx passed last year I decided it’s time to try something new (I follow snake discovery and fell In love with reptiles) snakes are awesome but feeding rats is to much for me personally bc I think they’re cute too lol.. I’m perfectly fine with feeding bugs as I grew up in FL where bugs were horrible and I have a vendetta against them lmao
u don't want a bearded dragon??? literally the best lizard of all time... There's a reason why everyone has one. For so long I avoided them for that specific reason and then I got one and fell in love. By far there is a MASSIVE reason why they are so popular. I have 2 Uromastyx as well... One is amazing (the female) and the male is not a nice guy LOL
All animals are amazing in their own right!
Popularity shouldn't matter, just get the perfect animal for you.
I love my beardie! I've had him since he was 3 months old, and now he turns 4 in June🥰
that's wicked!

Thanks that is great. Most of the bearded in Santa Barbara are related to ours. I did them for my Son when He was in grade school. We got very good with hatching at one time we had 200 kids. All got good homes. Our matriarch finally went we stopped dragons since then. I may look for a couple again but I am Not breeding. It's too much for me now. I will try later to post pics.
I love the video but I want to say that you’re totally wrong when it comes to handling collared lizards! They’re actually super great for handling and super easy to tame out! I admit they’re not as easy to handle like a bearded dragon! But to say they’re only a display creature is false and misinformation. It’s kind of obvious you’ve never handled one. Take it from someone who breeds and owns blazing blue collared lizards!
I didn't know how common the bearded dragons were as pets out side of Australia. We have them in the garden but the dog usually scares them away. Does anyone keep frill neck lizards outside of Australia.
yea frilled lizards are in the hobby but not nearly as common!
I think all of these are amazing animals.

How about something like top 5 centrepiece reptiles maybe you put in a big enclosure in your living room and everyone goes wow what’s that when they walk in
Ackes would be on my list for sure
Top 5 Display reptiles went up last year, enjoy!
I'd actually like more on the chukwalla as I've seen less care guides on that lizard than any other on the list.
Think of it like ice cream
Bearded dragons - vanilla
Ackies- chocolate
Uromastyx - mint chocolate chip
Painted agama - clotted cream
Chuckwalla - strawberry
Collared lizard - that weird ice cream which you get from your uncles brothers farm which tastes like grass
Mmm now I'm hungry
hahahah this is actually so accurate
Cool alternatives but my hearts with the Beardies lol.
After owning both a Uro and a Bearded, the Uro wins for everything except how social it is. If the Uro was even half as social as my bearded, I'd own 3 or 4 of them.
uromastyx are my dream reptile
Hehe, the way the beardie is sitting on your shoulder makes it look like its breathing smoke because of the humidity machine in the back.
that's fire breath bro!
I know a man call Chuck Walla 😂 I’m sure his parents where reptile people 😂
Hahaha

My heart broke a little when i didn't hear this
hahaha!
collared lizards are native to where i live, they’re awesome. also i have beardies so idk why i’m watching this lmao
they are great!
I love my rescue Beardie
I've considered ackies and uromastyx before but the thing that's really selling me on beardies so far is how they'll just chill on your shoulder. I hear Uromastyx tend to be a little flightier and prefer to hide and ackies are super active and I don't foresee one wanting to just chill and hang out.
I did not know that chuckwallas were herbivorous tho. I'm putting them on my list of potentials cuz not having bugs around is also a huge plus
I am thinking about getting a painted agama or maybe a pair. I'll be looking for that video on them.
they are such great lizards
The collared lizard at Clint's reptile room is very handleable
One of these days I want a WWR t-shirt that says “this is not a care guide”

Sadly, virtually all of these except for the ackies are wild caught here in the US. There are some very rare animals like true Australian frilled dragons and water dragons that are probably most similar to bearded that are cbb. But both of those animals get a bit bigger than beardies, too.
There’s captive bred uromastyx i think
Water dragons are very common.

This video just reinforces that my "type" of lizard seems to be (more or less) diurnal desert dweller XD
(aka: I wanted Ackies, Uros and Beardies anyway but now I lowkey want the others on the list too)
same!
You didn’t “ruin” the list with an amphibian! Colorado River Toads like similar conditions to beardies and will actually bask in a heat spot sometimes, as long as they have a temp and moisture gradient!
To me uromastyx are like a tortoise and bearded dragon had a baby.
basically!
I've seen zoos cohab Chuckwallas with Collared Lizards, Spiny Lizards, a Desert Box Turtle, Desert Tortoises, Quail and Burrowing Owls.
Say no to the LACEY ACT AMENDMENT OF 2022 LET'S SAFE THE REPTILE PET KEEPING HOBBY......!!! 💯💯💯💯 LOVE THE VIDEO
Thank you so much for doing these videos! I came across your channel while looking for ideas as to which reptile I should get first - and I still don't know, to be honest 😅 Anyway you've actually at least helped me to narrow the species down to, well, about ten atm 😅 So, thank you!
Future video idea: Differences in care between different types of cave geckos 👀 (since we already know they're going to blow up in 2022 😁) The ones available in my area the most are not the Chinese ones, or at least not by their Latin name (g. Huuliensis), and there is literally zero information about them to be found? Mostly it directs me to websites about g. Hainanensis, and I'm not sure the care is the same? So a video about that would be most appreciated ♥ (anyone else down here who knows any source of information, let me know too!)
PS: Sorry for my terrible English, it's not my first language 😅
thanks so much for watching!

hi
Love that Collareds are being recommended, They were my first reptile some 14 or so years back now. They are soo much more entertaining to watch than beardies, So much more active, but yes that does mean they aren't overly easy to handle. That said it's not because they are fiesty and they do tame down lovely, they are just less robust than a chunky beardie and lightning fast. From memory my collareds were in the region of 40 grams compared to a 400-500 gram beadie. They are one of a few species that can run on their back legs so it really is all about how confident a handler you are, how secure your facility is etc. I'm not anti beardies at all having had both at the time including breeding both at a high level but there is no bettter lizard than a collared if you aren't a heavy handler.
