    Hi Del, good try at the seat cover. A mate of mine did exactly the same thing a few years ago, sadly after a weekend out on the bike the strips began to slip and tare, and he ended up replacing them with one solid piece, it did add some individuality to the bike but it was short lived. Glad you have kept an open mind to the possibility that you may have to rethink this issue. Hope you have a dry week and catch up with you on Friday.

      Thanks Andy, I accepted from the start that it would be a finite solution, but gives me the chance to be creative again when I choose to replace it... thanks for your input mate.

    Why not rework the seat the other guy, thin it down etc

    • @Moonfleet41

      It's secured by rivnuts, moulded in to the base, so there's at least 12mm sticking up already and it would end up too thick if I don't wanna feel them sticking in my ass... there's a reason why it's 3" thick.

    If it's the same camping mat foam we get over here, it's rubbish. If I were going to have a go, I'd go to a dive shop and pick up some 6.5mil neoprene. Sandwich two layers with rubber cement, and then hi bond tape to the seat. (and, spray it well with Scotchgard or other water repellent to keep the outer fabric from absorbing rain.) That might keep my boney old butt comfy for a mile or two.😎

    Yeah, it doesn’t quite match the high standard the rest of the bike is endowed with, imo. Good job fitting and cutting. Glad you said it was only temporary. ❤️🤘

    Good idea with the individual "slats" rather than trying to get one big piece to lay down flat. I think it fits that bike well too. If it doesn't work out you can always get a pair of bicycle shorts and then the padding stays with you and no one is the wiser. 😁 Amazing make over on the Streetfighter. Many thanks and best wishes Del and Penny. ❤👍👍

    Just a thought, perhaps if you do go mk2 route. Run the strips front to back of the bike. The wear tends to be on the edges, on a road bike it might last longer the other way round. Then keep the back section the same, as I'm guessing that one wont be subject to the same wear. Either way great job, that serves it's purpose. :)

    Always something new to experience. Be good for farmers on old tractors in the 40’s and 50’s metal seats!! Lol. It's certainly different. Nice thoughts though. What did Penny think?? 😅 in my mind, I would make it two pieces… front ( pelvis support) and back. ( as a backrest) , probably make a good curve seat this way. 🤷‍♂️ nice try though.

    I used the foam on my TRX 850 on a thin base i made, then covered in leather. Got the seat down enough but retained comfort. I like what you've done here!

    Great to see you having fun trying out new ways of doing things and being willing to experiment. Best attitude, for sure! Looks very cool, I wouldn't have thought to do it that way in a million years, but that's why I'm not an artist, hee hee. Sleeping mats seem to last forever, you just can't kill the things, but I would suspect it's the adhesive and the edges that will be the first to deteriorate and start lifting up.

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  3 місяці тому +2

      Exactly that mate, I don't think I'ver ever damaged or scarred a sleeping mat, even climbing all over one with boots on in a tent!... so imagine this will last plenty long enough to see the bike through to it's next make over!

  • @wobblysauce

    The foam moulds really well, but you do only need it where you touch the bike… mainly the hip bone as the body was already moulded to your dimensions.

    Hi Penny and Del - nicely done! For a first time I think that's brilliant and if they wear or tear, like you said, just do it again! Hopefully it proves somewhat durable... and it looks great. Creative too! Take care, dear friends. Be well and ride safe.

    My Suzuki gs500 that had a fibreglass seat unit the previous owner had made and it looked the biz. It was the style assent that sold it me in the first place.
    I had trouble with it, and the mod I made on it made me bleed. I kid you not, I even thought it was something else and to related... bowel cancer or something.
    Anyway, I got a pro to make me a new seat, and everything was good after that.
    I won't be going that route on the FJ as I will want to take a pillion.

    Yup looks good and solves the problem. Personally I would waste an afternoon cutting a bevel on the outside edge of the strips - it would make them blend in more and stop you catching them when getting on and off. Just a thought - feel very free to ignore my rambling 🙂

    I've used good quality double sided carpet tape before now to put similar foam on olafs seat for long distance riding. It's stayed stuck in all weathers, came undone a bit in super hot weather but I reckon anything does in that.

    Hmmminm! Worthwhile idea I think, but I suspect it will be short lived. Like others have said, it seems that a thinning of that other seat might be a logical way to go! Cheers to you both!

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  3 місяці тому +1

      Not at all Allen, the base alone would be a problem, it has internal riv nuts to bolt it down so you'd need to make it at least twice as thick as this foam and you'd still feel them, and been a little surprised how everyone thinks this stuff will break up in a week, it's designed and marketed to be seat foam and actually lasts quite well... I don't stamp all over it or hang off the bike, so repsectfully treated (as the bike will be), I'm sure it'll last at least a couple of seasons, probably in time for a re-paint and the next make over!

    Great job as always,,, but still have to say the first version was really the best and really gave a fantastic green Kawa look, the guy that did the wrap was historic. But hey it had to be different.

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  3 місяці тому

      Just to be clear, the biggest disappointment when buying the bike back was that someone had removed the vintage wrap, I would have loved that to still be in place to this day, but sadly it's gone and the lurid green paint job it was replaced with was awful, fluffy edged lines, wonky symmetry and a terrible finish in the lacquer, so had no choice!

      'Something similar' may have been the problem, I deliberatly bought genuine, dedicated race seat foam from a company specialising in it to get the best option I could, I've never had a sleeping mat gore up and tear to pieces in one camping weekend, in fact been using the same one for years, so all in all, I'm pretty confident in it, plus it's a bike for occasional weekend rides, not a daily commuter!
