  • Since opening in 1941, Garner State Park near Concan TX has grown to be what many say is the most popular state park in Texas. In this video, we take you along as we go RVing at Garner and give you a tour of the campgrounds, the Garner dam on the Frio River, park amenities and hiking trails. This is another Texas State Park built by the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) back in the 1930s, so y'all know we love that. Join us as we explore a Texas Hill Country treasure where generations of Texans have created decades of memories: Garner State Park! My favorite childhood and teenage memories. We camped across the river a t Majors River Camp. We usually had a our travel trailer and we would rent a shelter and pull our trailer next to it. We would take our shoes off and roll up our pants and walk across the river below the damage and walk every night to the dances. Met a lot of friends there from different areas of Texas and would meet up every year at the same time.

    First of all, Two Tired Teachers sent me your way. 😊 I loved this video. I grew up in South Texas, about 30 miles south of San Antonio. Never got to go to Garner, but had friends who owned property on the Rio Frio near Leakey. But it's been about 35 years since we've been there. Great times! Beautiful area of Texas! Hope we get down there again soon. Thanks again for a beautiful video! I'll be following your adventures.

    Use to go Garner back late 60s & early 70s. Fun. Made 1 trip during Easter break, in 60s. left S. Texas in mid 90s. Texas Northner blew in, Temps in low 20s & howling wind. But I had my trusty Wool blanket, thin rubber mat & canvas rain slicker. Hopefully, 1 day to get back.

    My family and I latent camped at Neal's Lodges and Campground every summer, and even went there to evacuate from hurricanes. Every trip included a couple of visits to Garner to rent paddleboats or attend dances, and Uvalde for groceries and air conditioning in the hottest part of the day.
    Thanks for the trip down Memory Lane.

      My wife and I just recently bought a 5th wheel, so we haven't been to many places yet (certainly not as many places as you guys! LOL!) , but we are looking forward to future journeys! We appreciate all the wonderful information you guys have from your videos and website! I can almost count on one hand the places that we have been so far: Brushy Creek on Lake O' the Pines, Atlanta State Park, Tyler State Park, Mount Magazine State Park, AK, Petit Jean State Park in Arkansas, Robbers Cave State Park, OK, Beavers Bend State Park, OK and McGee Creek State Park in Oklahoma. I just started a new career and my work schedule keeps us pretty close to home until I can get some more vacation time. Of the places we've been so far, Petit Jean State Park in Arkansas is our favorite!

We really enjoyed Village Creek State Park in Arkansas. We were there in November a few years back and saw the leaves changing. Those Arkansas parks are beautiful! We haven’t visited any Oklahoma State Parks yet, but we hear good things about them. Thanks for watching our videos and using our website! We’re so glad that y’all find them helpful. Safe travels & happy camping! - Stacie & Tom

      We're from Lufkin Texas and my family and my sister and her family we all get together travel to Eagle Pass and then we go to Garner State Park on a Friday or Saturday we stay there till almost sun down and go back to Eagle Pass to my father's house since it's only one hour and forty minutes to get from E.P. to the park. But I can tell you it's so much fun sometimes there's a lot of people there but it still seems like you're there by yourself cause it's nice and tranquil. Everyone is just minding their own business and having a good fun time. To me it's just beautiful. I know we have our own lakes here like Sam Rayburn or Ratcliff lake but the water doesn't compare to the one from the Frio River. It's a really nice place to visit and distress and have fun.

    • @rvamericayall
      @rvamericayall  6 років тому +4

      Hi Debra. Thank you for the suggestion. The reason why we haven’t talked about costs in our park videos is because many of the parks have different camping fee price points depending on location within the park and the types of amenities in the campsites. The parks also have daily use fees for folks without a Texas State Parks Pass. All of the fees tend to change from time to time. We’ll see if we can come up with a way to at least give folks a ballpark idea without being confusing. We appreciate your comments.

    "I DO have hair!" ROFL!!!! Gotta love what us guys focus on. LOL. It's funny but back in 2006/'07 when I went through four months of chemo for Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma I knew I'd likely be losing mine (and I did). But I had heard that often times, after the chemo, hair would grow in with a different body style and sometimes even the color would be slightly changed. Sadly mine grew back in just as it had always been; STRAIGHT and the same color (though I did start going more and more grey over time). I just clip it really short (have ever since it grew back in) with the clippers I always used on the dog. LOL! (Yep, I'm sure my dog is laughing at me up on the Rainbow Bridge these days.) But I do chuckle every time I see a guy making a fuss over his hair. I use to; now I just accept that I've gotten old and I'm just lucky to have hair (though it is now thinning somewhat). GREAT video of the park, y'all! I love it. Hugs and safe travels.

    My first camping trip after I got my drivers license was to Garner, with my younger brother. My parent were a little worried he and I would kill each other, but we survived and had a great time. We only tried to kill each other at home. LOL.

    You didn't say so I'll ask. Are the trails rated and marked for difficulty? I know National parks and many state parks will mark the trail heads with a difficulty rating number. This information is really good to know before you start so you can stay within your physical limitations.

    • @rvamericayall
      @rvamericayall  6 років тому +2

      +Roy Davis Great question, Roy. Most trail heads have a large information board with details about that trail and what to expect. (Like the one Stacie was looking at for Old Baldy). The park also offers a trail map with difficulty ratings for the more popular trails.

    Hi guys, can you bring your dogs on the trails? (or in the park?) What is the best time of year to go?
    Thank you for the videos...great source for research.

      +Lady Lone Star USA Thank you for your comment! We appreciate you watching. Dogs are welcome on the trails and throughout the park except for inside buildings. Dogs are not allowed inside any of the buildings including restrooms. We saw several dogs on the trails, even at the top of Old Baldy (which we believe is the highest point in the park?). We chose not to take Star on the trails this trip because we knew some of the trails we would be on would be challenging and we weren’t sure how she would do. She relaxed in the AC at the RV while we were hiking. If you are looking for high energy and/or want to participate in the dances, you’ll want to go during the summer. But if you’d like a more laid back environment like we showed in the video, we’d suggest going anytime from mid-September to before Spring Break. The weather was great when we were there late Sept/early October. The weekend was still crowded, but the weekdays were peaceful. The leaves are changing now so early November would be beautiful.

      You can bring your animals to any place of the park EXCEPT for inside buildings, for example the shelters or cabins. We found this out the HARD WAY when we were unpacking & had the door 🚪 to the screened shelter propped open and one of the PARK RANGERS saw our CHOCOLATE LAB. walking in & out of the shelter and felt like he had to take it upon himself to stop 🛑 at our shelter and even tho Anney (our dog) was laying outside when he stopped, he was NOT A NICE PARK RANGER!!!!!!! HE STARTED CHEWING ON THE ADULTS IN CHARGE ABOUT NOT FOLLOWING THE RULES ABOUT KEEPING ANIMALS OUT OF ANY BUILDINGS OWNED BY THE PARK. I secretly filmed his diatribe and I went to find the HEAD RANGER. That is one nice man. I showed him the video and apologized for even having to take such a thing and I promptly Erased it in front of him to show that all I was interested in was doing the right thing. All I know is the head Ranger asked us to try our best to keep the dog out of the building, but if she got too hot, by all means allow her to go inside and rest. About the HATEFUL RANGER, WE NEVER SAW HIM AGAIN, so I really do not know what happened & really don’t care!!! GARNER IS A GREAT PLACE!!!!!

    My family has been going to Garner State Park (GSP) since the 40’s !!!!! It started with my Grandparents. They would have these HUGE “GET-TOGETHERS” @ the Park with at least 20 DIFFERENT FAMILIES AND ALL OF THEIR CHILDREN, & A HUGE AMOUNT OF EXTENDED FAMILY MEMBERS WOULD ALSO BE WELCOMED (AND CAME). My Mamaw showed me SOOOO MANY B&W pics of FAMILY “GET-TOGETHERS” AT GSP YEAR AFTER YEAR AND YOU COULD LITERALLY SEE HOW THE CHILDREN GREW UP!!!!! Then those children got married and began to take their families to GSP but instead of all at the same time, everyone made their own reservation. JUST TO THINK, THAT BEGAN IN THE 40’S, OUR FAMILY HAS BEEN OVER EVERY INCH OF THAT PARK, CAVES, EVERYTHING!!!!! What I can’t stand is that people think that they need to “make their mark or their name on NATURE”. It sickens me when I see people’s names in the caves, like we care that Brittany, or whomever defaced a gorgeous rock structure. Off season is the best time to go!!! Also if you are a seasoned camper, WINTER CAMPING IS AWESOME.

      Hi Debbie! Thanks so much for sharing your family’s experience at Garner State Park! We love to hear the stories about so many generations making memories together. We have similar memories with other Texas State Parks, and we love to look back through old pictures and remember those trips. We agree completely about folks defacing natural areas. We don’t understand it at all and it always makes us sad. Thanks for watching. We hope you’ll be visiting GSP again soon! Oh, and by the way, we LOVE winter camping!!

    What does it cost to stay at Garner State Park?

    • @rvamericayall
      @rvamericayall  6 років тому +1

      There are several different price points. Here’s the park camping link... tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/garner/fees-facilities/campsites. If you don’t have a Texas State Parks Pass, there is also a daily use fee (currently $8/person/day at Garner). If you are not familiar with the Texas State Parls Pass, here’s a link to our video about it: ua-cam.com/video/zG_METT7uqc/v-deo.html. Thanks

      My family and I would go to Garner every summer and stay for six weeks. We started going when I was 5 years old and my last trip to Garner was when I was 18. I am now 66 and hope to get to Garner one last time to relive some great memories of innocent times when camping was the most affordable way to take a family on a vacation (lower middle class family). I will never ever forget those family summers!
