Why didn't they listen to the locals? They probably warned them that it's not a good idea to walk into the forest in the rainy season let alone without any experience. How arrogant and ignorant. Smh.
um yeah not impressed with all the animal killings and the graphic images. I accept this happens in the wilderness but people watching this may be unprepared for what they are about to see so I'm just warning people - If you are an animal lover- you probably don't want to watch this.
What Father sends a bunch of teenage boys into the jungle with only machetes to find a lost cit??? Ridiculous. Preparation is life or death in a place like that.
These parents discovered a novel way to get rid of their problem teenagers. Send them into the jungle on a wild goose-chase, then hire a hitman to make sure they didn't get back!😂
I know a little about travel in Central America, as well as the Caribbean islands, the Philippines, and the tropics of Queensland, AUS. Those locations look lush and beautiful but they are dense with life -- from creepy insects and reptiles, down to microbes in the organic jungle floor. It is a great place to get sick, and I mean REALLY sick. In every drop of water there can be microbes/bacteria that can kill you. Every mosquito bite can carry disabling disease. Every insect and reptile can sting and deliver venom. The father that sent those noodle-head teens to such a location was the stupidest of all.
Definitely misleading title. Would be an interesting story anyway but expectations lead to disappointment. Lesson seems to be that he appreciates his white middle class life more than ever. Fair enough!
What a bunch of oversensitive babies in these comments... no one listening for comprehension it seems. Yes, there's no traditional NDE, but a flash flood is close enough. Flash floods can be extremely life-threatening. As for their father, the only thing he seems to have done wrong is not go with them.
I didn't feel the emotion I think the author intended to convey because of the audience laughter at inappropriate times (who'd laugh when being told the tour guide will slay everyone if the gold is found?) . The author contributed by lacking to convey the seriousness of the situation because he lead into the serious part of his tale without any break from the comedic part. And this wasn't a NDE, this was more of a NME (near-murderous experience); either the guide was gonna murder someone, or the boys were. Grade: F.
I don't want to sound over critical but this is not a "near death experience". This only just qualifies as an experience. Some inexperienced guys went into the rain forest, there was a flash flood and they came out again. Does this guy have any idea what most of the population of the earth goes through on a daily basis just to survive. I once got wet for a few days 37 years ago and I'm here to tell you "don't take anything for granted." How deep and original! Never heard that before.
The "near death" is in the fact that these kids could have died at any moment from a snake bite, drowning, a fever, a fall and on and on and on. They were very near to "Death"; they walked along side of, they slept with and woke up with death every single day spent in the jungle.
I was put off by the constant laughing/giggling coming from some women in the audience. It seemed really inappropriate and odd. This man is telling a serious story, not a joke.
IF YOU STILL READ YOUR COMMENTS ON THIS PAGE, PLEASE READ A BOOK TITLED "SETH SPEAKS, THE ETERNAL VALIDITY OF THE SOUL" (THE UNIVERSE BEYOND THE FIVE SENSES) AND YOU'LL GET ALL THE ANSWERS YOU'RE SEEKING FOR BEING A BETTER AND WISER DOCTOR AND MORE UNDERSTANDING OF HUMAN NATURE AND ALL ABOUT THE LONG SEARCHED MEANING OF THE DEATH EXPERIENCE AND LIFE AFTER DEATH. ITS ACTUALLY CALLED "THE MECHANICS OF TRANSITION"
I'll bet their parents had insured their lives heavily before sending their defenseless and clueless kids into the Central American Jungle along with a hired drug dealing killer whose job was to make sure they wouldn't make it back alive!
Definitely not haha, my dad was Chris in the story and Mike is my uncle. And the story goes a lot deeper than this but too long to go into in this Tedtalk
Cool Story, real adventures. Nice to listen to you telling. Sadly nothing about a nda but real cool story. The end feels like has nothing to do with the story though.
Idiotic? I think of it like the lovely rich French foreign exchange student we hosted. The father told us to make sure he worked while he was with it since he never lifted a finger at home. We took it with a grain of salt, we did the basic stuff for him. Hubby had him help rake up the piles from our 3 acres of land, gather the chicken eggs, play with our toddler etc. I did the house work, cooked dinners and every meal from scratch. He was apart of our family for 3 weeks. We even purchased stuff for him and paid for all of his trips and meals. He told his family we were the best host he ever had. Perhaps that as the lesson his father wanted, doesn't mean he was lazy. Our host son was smart, had his pilot licenses at 17, taught pilots on school etc.
Nice story, but down vote for misleading title.
THE JOURNEY UP THE AMAZON THAT THEODORE ROOSEVELT ENGAGED IN IS A FASCINATING READ.
Why didn't they listen to the locals? They probably warned them that it's not a good idea to walk into the forest in the rainy season let alone without any experience. How arrogant and ignorant. Smh.
This example of what greed does to people. it's sad..
I feel like there is MUCH more to this story.
It's a movie script that's being pitched. I see it as a mid-teen ensemble cast, medium budget, maybe a little CGI for the jungle snakes.
um yeah not impressed with all the animal killings and the graphic images. I accept this happens in the wilderness but people watching this may be unprepared for what they are about to see so I'm just warning people - If you are an animal lover- you probably don't want to watch this.
Misleading title, did not like the talk at all, very disappointed!!!!!
Why does that lady keep laughing ... ?
Linda Casey nervous laughing
Linda Casey 2
Mushrooms
The title is misleading. This is just a story that has nothing to do with NDE. The key message is rather commonplace.
stanbimi Thank you, that just saved me some time.
Thank you, my dear.
I'm sorry I'm not inspired at all with this talk.

"How a Near Murder Shaped Five Teenagers' Lives"
This should be the title.
I feel like if people would stop laughing he could tell us everything. Why are people assuming he is kidding?
Humbly ask Jesus he will answer you,,,,

Not an NDE

I feel sorry for the mules that got swept away by the flash flood......

Robert J. Williamson thanks for verbalising my thoughts...
Awful story
where is NDE????
This is a campfire story. It fizzled out like a wet firework.
Where's the near death experience?....phony click bait... Waste of time

They were very near to "Death"; they walked along side of, they slept with and woke up with death every single day spent in the jungle.
This was 4:45 minutes of my life I will never get back. Awful.
The fact that the Dad arranged this made it personal. Shame on the dad . I was on the edge of my seat !!Excellent story and told very well.
I was put off by the constant laughing/giggling coming from some women in the audience. It seemed really inappropriate and odd. This man is telling a serious story, not a joke.
Could not agree more!

NOT a near-death experience.
boring, Ive done more than that - this is NO near death ex.
I know a few teenagers that this trip would work wonders ,anyone with a teenage they want to send ?
This sounds like the basis for the Harrison Ford movie called Mosquito Coast.
Title is not what he talks about...I want to hear about near death not discomfort
Wow! Scarey for these kids!
just a story, with a very misleading title, no nde
crap nothing to do with nde! dont bother watching it
The message is simple, but I think it's worth 12 minutes of your life to listen.

Father of the year!
A TRUE conclusion!
Worst. TED. Talk.
